The ZCHS Asst Principal Freshman Center’s view: I hope everyone has enjoyed a positive and restful summer. We are really excited to welcome the class of 2012 to Zionsville Community High School. We acknowledge up front that the transition to high school can be a very stressful experience for many students; however we are committed to helping every student find personal success with this transition and are confident that our structure and organization will ensure a positive start to the high school career for all students. Research shows that a good start academically, emotionally and socially helps students create positive connections at school. In turn, these positive connections lead to a high level of engagement and achievement that students will use as a springboard toward future success. To assist in this transition, many freshman students recently participated in an orientation program led by approximately 75 upperclassmen mentors. This day was designed to help the class of 2012 become more acclimated to both the physical building as well as the culture of Zionsville Community High School. We believe this leadership by our upperclassmen helps alleviate a significant amount of stress and anxiety over the transition to high school. In addition, these same mentor students will be meeting periodically throughout the school year with all freshman students to monitor their assimilation into ZCHS and assisting them with their needs. Please remember that my door is always open if your son or daughter experiences anything less than a positive beginning to the new school year. I consider it part of my personal mission to help all students enjoy a positive experience at Zionsville Community High School and will work to assist in any way I can. Yours in education, Greg Hall Assistant Principal, Freshman Center 873-3355 extension 62999 ghall@zcs.k12.in.us Open House September 10 Visit each of your child’s classes at the Open House on September 10, 2008 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. While you’re at ZCHS stop by the PTO tables for a bottle of water and a cookie during your breaks between classes. Tables will be conveniently located in both the Freshman Center and the main building. This year ZCHS will be undertaking a schedule change that will allow student to attend a "seminar period". Almost 450 freshmen will be attend 12 of the 18 seminar periods with upper class Mentors. This program, previously called "EKOM", has become our Freshman Mentorship Program. Over 70 upper class Mentors met on August 11 th to be trained in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Presenters from Dow (Bettye Ellison, Bill Campbell, and Larry Sernyk) each volunteered their time to educate our Mentors in the 7 Habits. Along with them were counselors Melissa Ludwa and Melinda Stephen who will be working with freshmen this year and have moved their offices to the Freshman Center. Gil Speer, the director of the Freshman Mentorship Program, also presented and facilitated the entire morning. The young Mentors are excited about giving these "tools" to freshmen, to help them have a successful and rewarding freshmen year.

For the 2008-2009 academic year, the structure of and services provided by the Guidance Department at Zionsville Community High School (ZCHS) has been changed. Due to continued growth at ZCHS and the arrival of freshmen from two middle schools, starting in 2009-2010, the administration and the guidance staff have begun to reassess how we can best serve the unique transitional and developmental needs of our freshmen. Knowing that the first year of high school sets the tone for a student’s high school career, we want to target our youngest students and their parents in ways that will allow them to establish a firm foundation to build upon during their sophomore, junior, and senior years. With this in mind, the roles and responsibilities of our guidance staff have changed to allow for two guidance counselors dedicated to serving freshman and sophomore students (now located on the Freshman Center campus) and three counselors dedicated to serving junior and senior students (in the current Guidance Office). Students are now assigned to counselors in the following way: Mrs. Cassie Petrocelli Freshmen and Sophomores with last names starting with A-L Mrs. Melinda Stephan Freshmen and Sophomores with last names starting with M-Z Mrs. Melissa Ludwa Juniors and Seniors with last names starting with A-K Mr. Robert Brennan Juniors and Seniors with last names starting with L-T Mr. Greg Kirkham Juniors and Seniors with last names starting with U-Z While we acknowledge that these changes will mean that your student’s counselor may change next year and will change during their high school career, we also know that the change will allow students to build relationships with multiple adults throughout the building and increase the accessibility of our counseling staff by allowing them to focus on the developmental needs of students in their assigned grade levels. Likewise, we anticipate the development of new programming and services aimed at easing the high school transition and ultimately improving the entire high school experience for all Zionsville students. As a staff we are working to make this transition as seamless as possible by identifying and developing the most effective and efficient policies, processes, and patterns of communication. We hope that you will help us to maximize the benefits of our services by contributing to our ongoing dialogue about how best to serve the needs of students.
