Power of Pen 2010 (continued from page 6)
Someday when I am older
Prologue: I am seven. Lot of things are confusing to me. Grown-ups tell me that
someday I'll understand, but I wish that "Someday" were now. There is something
grownups call death. I know it's not a good thing, but don't know quite what it is.
Maybe I'll know someday when I'm older.
It was never going to be an ordinary day. I don't usually wait with Sania for her bus
before school in the morning, but today, we are sitting on the steps together. The
bus has just stopped outside our home. Sania is eleven and she doesn't like to hug
me too often, but this morning, she hugs me good bye. I don't know why?
In art class today, I drew a picture of Baby Jesus in the manger with an angel above
him. Now school is over, and one of the teachers drives me home. She says that
Sania met with an accident.
Now I'm walking into my house. Mummy's crying, She never cries, even when I'm
really, really bad. All the grown-ups are talking, but I can't understand what they
are saying; maybe someday I will. Daddy is the only one who speaks to me.
He says, “Sania has gone up to heaven.” I'm crying now. I don't really want to, but
Mummy is, and I think it's the right thing to do. I am so confused. Mummy and
Daddy told me that heaven is where we go when we die, but Sania can't be dead. I
want to ask questions, but I know I'm supposed to be just sad now. This is really
complicated. I want someone to explain, but as usual, I'm too young to understand
anyway.
It is over a year now. Sometimes they tell me more about 'the accident'. Sania was
waiting for the bus after school. A car was driving too fast and went out of control
and hit her. They tell me she didn't feel any pain. That's good, because I don't want
Sania to be hurt. I am trying very hard to understand death.
Sometimes, I ask Mummy questions like, “Mummy, why did it happen to Sania
that she was hit. Why couldn't it have been someone else who was standing there?”
Mummy starts crying again and says, “Because then another family would have to
go through all the pain and sadness that we feel.”
Now it is a few weeks later. Mummy and Daddy tell me that the man who hit Sania
found out that he had killed her, so he killed himself. I think I am old enough to
understand what this means. “That's quite right Mom? Now he has paid for what
he did, “I say. Mummy speaks very quietly when she answers. She tells me, “No,
it's not good. Now his family has to go through everything that we felt. He
shouldn't have done that.”
Epilogue: I am sixteen now and I know a lot more than I did then. Back then, I
didn't quite understand why Mom didn't want the man to be punished, but I trusted
that she was right. Now mom's words echo in my heart as clear as they did when I
first heard them nine years ago. Since that time, there have been so many instances
when I have found it difficult, almost impossible to forgive someone. then I hear
Mom again. I realize that if Mom could forgive the man who killed her daughter,
surely I can forgive my best friend for forgetting to call me one evening.
It took me a long time to understand exactly what that horrific day and my sister's
death meant. I told you it was never going to be an ordinary day. That day changed
our lives forever. I had to grow up without a sibling. I have gradually accepted that
I will not see her again in heaven and I know that. I also know that Sania is happy
and that she is still with me. With time, my wounds have healed. As I have learned
more about life, I have also come to understand death better. More important than
all this, I have learned Mom's unforgettable lesson of the ULTIMATE
FORGIVENESS.
As rightly said by Alexander Pope “ To err is human to forgive, divine”
FRUIT FOR LIFE
When it comes to choosing fruits and vegetables, follow this
general rule: the darker the color, the better. For a quick way
to ensure you are getting the nutrients you need, consume
these nutrition powerhouses.
Popeye had the right idea – spinach (as well as other dark green leafy
vegetables) is a super food – loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Sweet potatoes are also a stellar choice, providing a number of healthful benefits
including being a good source of fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium for kids
and adults alike. Broccoli is another winner. These "tiny trees" as children often call them provide
fiber, vitamin C, potassium, calcium and more.
To help boost your nutrient intake of a
specific vitamin or mineral, try these fruits and veggies:
For calcium: Broccoli, Cherries, Figs, Kiwifruit, Oranges, Plums, Spinach
For vitamin B2: Beet greens, Broccoli, Mushrooms, Peas, Spinach
For iron: Spinach, Dried apricots, Dried beans (cooked), Lima beans, Nuts
For vitamin B3: Dates, Mushrooms, Potatoes, Nuts
For fiber: Apples, Artichokes, Asian Pears, Bananas, Blackberries, Blueberries, Boysenberries,
Brussels sprouts, Green beans, Green cabbage, Dates, Figs, Kiwifruit, Lima Beans, Onions,
Oranges, Pears, Peas, Persimmons, Pumpkin, Raspberries, Spinach, Sweet potatoes
For folic acid/vitamin B9: Asparagus, Avocados, Bananas, Beets, Bell peppers, Blackberries,
Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cantaloupe, Cauliflower, Corn, Grapefruit juice, Green beans,
Lettuce (red leaf, green leaf, romaine), Oranges, Orange juice, Papayas, Raspberries, Spinach,
Strawberries, Sweet potatoes, Watermelon
For potassium: Dried apricots, Artichokes, Bananas, Beet greens, Bok choy, Broccoli, Cherries,
Kiwifruit, Pomegranates, Prune juice, Baked potatoes (with skins), spinach, Sun-dried tomatoes,
Yellow tomatoes, yams
For vitamin C: Red and yellow bell peppers, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower,
Chile peppers, Grapefruit, Grapefruit juice, Guava, Honeydew, Kiwifruit,
Lemons, Limes, Oranges, Orange juice, Papayas, Pineapple, Raspberries,
Spinach, Strawberries, Sweet potatoes, Tomatoes, Watermelon
