The student will earn:
4 points in each area for fulfilling the assignments in full
3 points for fulfilling all assignments with few mistakes, showing a fair level of preparation
2 points for fulfilling all of the assignments, but showing a low level of preparation
1 point for not fulfilling all of the assignments and/or having an unacceptable number of mistakes
zero points for not doing the assignments or for an unacceptable level of preparation
regardless of the level of publicity.
Brass Area Recital Policy: One of the most important and beneficial aspects of the music school learning
environment is the opportunity to hear live music performances on a regular basis. Students are encouraged
to attend as many live performances as possible. One absence is allowed without penalty, and without the
need for an excuse. The second absence from a required event will lower the final grade for the
semester one letter. Every additional unexcused absence will lower the grade an additional letter, and
remember that Applied Music courses are “C or better” in order to pass. Excused absences from required
events may carry an alternate assignment or recital attendance. A student who makes a request to miss a
required event must make every effort to resolve the conflict before asking to be excused. To be excused
from a required event, a student must submit a request (by email) at least one week in advance of the recital
date to their respective applied teacher only. The request must include specific information regarding the
reason for the absence request. Requests are subject to the approval of the applied teacher.
All faculty, guest and student brass performances are required. Brass area student recitals are scheduled
for: March 20, March 26, April 7 and April 30 for Spring 2011. There maybe additions or changes to
this list, and students will be responsible to adjust as needed. Please keep an eye out for published guest
artist and faculty performances, all of which will be listed on the main music calendar on the web. In order
to receive credit for attending a performance, the student must check in with John Vietta at the
beginning of the performance.
3. Studio Class: You will be graded on your solo performance with your accompanist. Criteria will
include: preparation, stage presence, musicianship, intonation, technical proficiency and ensemble. This
will be 20 points of your final grade for the semester. Each absence from studio class will result in a
deduction of 4 points from the final semester total.
4. Jury Grade: Your end-of-the-semester performance exam. The jury must be performed with
accompaniment (where applicable) and must be a refined, polished performance.

and the Bb and C scales may be asked in three octaves. The student will be responsible for all major and
minor scales in eighth notes at a tempo of quarter note=120. The scale jury will happen in the last lesson of
