A Publication of Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music
Dear Patrons of Music Society Member
As we begin our 11th year at the
RiverPark Campus and the Saunders
Center for Music Studies, we
can see the dramatic changes experienced
over this decade.
In 2001, the Schwob School of
Music enrollment stood at 125
students. Now numbering 260
students and 25 full-time faculty,
the Schwob School increasingly
enjoys a reputation as a selective
and prestigious institution.
Our students regularly earn distinction
in top national and international
competitions, and
our music education graduates
are highly sought-after, with a
near-perfect placement rate upon
graduation.
We are the top-enrolled discipline
in the CSU Honors Program, and
we have formed partnerships
across the university and the region.
We will host an international
conference in May 2011 and
another one in June 2012.
I’d like to thank all those who
have made possible our dramatic
growth, and those who shared the
vision when it was just a possibility.
We have become an All-Steinway
School, created five endowed
faculty chairs, and increased
scholarship funding to over half a
million dollars per year.
The Woodruff Award program
has grown this year to include
fourteen outstanding students
from ten countries, becoming
increasingly competitive at the
same time. We extend our sincere
thanks to these great leaders and
supporters who have brought us
to our current position of prominence.
Looking ahead, we are poised for
significant growth in graduate
students with the inauguration
of a new Master’s in Performance.
Already, graduate enrollment has
topped 30 students, far exceeding
previous levels.
Legacy Hall continues to attract
performers and recording artists
who love its rich acoustics. The
College of the Arts, formed two
years ago by linking Music with the
Departments of Art, Theatre, and
Communication, offers the possibility
of new synergies and crossdisciplinary
offerings.
We have entered a period where
public universities increasingly
must look to private funding sources
to maintain and improve their
program quality, and we invite
your participation and support in
this journey. Please come and see
us!
Cordially,
Panorama - A Journey Through the History of Music
The Schwob School of Music presented its first Panorama
concert on November 20 at RiverCenter for the Performing
Arts. The performance, spread throughout the River-
Center facilities, introduced over 300 musicgoers to a wide
range of musical ensembles. From early orchestral masterpieces
to contemporary jazz and rock, Panorama wove a
unique and compelling story of the music of our time.
The 5th Annual Kaleidoscope Concert
The Schwob School of Music presented its annual Kaleidoscope
concert on April 16 in Bill Heard Theater. A true
musical extravanganza that satisfies all types of music lovers,
Kaleidoscope featured almost all the students at the
Schwob School of Music in a fast-paced, non-stop musical
performance. New groups, including the Popular Music
and Contemporary Music Ensemble, joined the line up
with old favorites such as the Philharmonic and Jazz Band.
An annual crowd pleaser, this year’s Kaleidoscope was
warmly received by an enthusiastic audience.
Annual Children’s Open House
The Schwob School’s Annual Children’s Open House on
March 26 was a great success, attracting over 100 children
of all ages. Budding musicians were introduced to an array
of musical instruments through the musical instrument
petting zoo, and also had the opportunity to participate in
musical games and activities. The highlight for many was
the chance to play the Jordan Concert Organ in Legacy
Hall. Photos from the Open House were featured in Valley
Parent in the “Valley Smiles” section in the August edition.
Noteworthy News:
Last year, Schwob School of Music violin student Suliman Tekalli was awarded third prize in the
Rodolfo Lipizer International Violin Competition in Gorizia, Italy. He was also awarded four special
prizes at the competition, which was more than any other competitor.
Dear POM Members,
As a college student, money is
tight with all of the expenses like
books, housing, and tuition. It is
very helpful for both me and my
parents for me to be able to receive
scholarship money to help
with the costs of attending such
a fine school. Than you for being
so generous in helping my family
pay for a great music education.
Dear POM Members,
I can honestly say without a
doubt that the Schwob School
has made an indelible impact on
my life. The faculty have been
amazing, both as educators as
well as resources for valuable
skills and information about
the music business. I would not
have been able to experience the
Schwob without your gracious
support. Thank you!
erformances: Columbus State Music Alum Peforms for Prince Charles
An accomplished operatic soprano and 2005 Columbus
State University music graduate, Paula Sides
knows how to prepare for a performance. But Sides’
role in an intimate May 12, 2011 concert before Prince
Charles at the Royal College of Music in London presented
a fresh challenge: How to curtsy.
“That was really freaking me out,” said Sides, a Smiths
Station, Ala., native who attended Columbus State on
a Servant Leadership scholarship. “I ended up doing
fine, though.”
Sides and other graduate musicians who performed CSU vocal alum Paula Sides shakes hands with Prince Charles
during the prince’s annual visit to the government-funded college even got an opportunity to chat for 20 minutes
with the British royal. “It was really fun because you just talk to him,” she said. “I remember feeling like
my face was cramping up from smiling. It was amazing.”
Sides was chosen to perform as winner of the Royal College of Music’s most prestigious honor for female students,
the Tagore Gold Medal. At Prince Charles’ request, she sang My Heart is Like a Singing Bird, a challenging
song by former RCM Director Hubert Parry, one of England’s most celebrated classic composers, who also
wrote three songs that Prince Charles selected for the royal wedding.
Sides, 28, has been amazing audiences with her voice since she was a preteen, when she sang the lead role of
Mary during a Christmas pageant staged by North Highland Assembly of God in Columbus. Growing up in
Smiths Station, the daughter of Berita and Claude R. Mooneyhan, Sides said she didn’t begin moving “from
gospel to classical” until she enrolled at Columbus State in 2000. She got bitten by the opera bug at age 19 after
attending, with other CSU music students, an Atlanta Opera performance of The Marriage of Figaro. From
that point on, she spent dozens of hours listening to old opera LPs in the music library at the entrance to the
Saunders Center for Music Studies, which houses CSU’s Schwob School of Music.
Among her Schwob faculty influences was organ professor Joseph Golden, longtime director of operatic studies.
“I learned so much from him about opera,” she said. CSU’s former vocal studies director, Teresa Hopkin,
now at Emory, played a key role in developing Sides’ voice.
Even as a student at the Royal College of Music, Sides began performing professionally as the only American
artist in the English Touring Opera, the oldest and largest opera company in Britain, a government-funded effort
to “bring opera to places that normally don’t get opera.” She divides her time between Yorkshire, in northern
England, and London, where she’s now preparing for two roles in a fall tour.
Despite the fact she’s gotten rave reviews from British opera critics, Sides said she’s cognizant about the importance
of growing professionally while remaining grounded in her roots and her role as part of an ensemble.
“I’m not a diva,” she said. “It’s about being consistent and a really great colleague, being great to work with and
having an `it’ factor when you’re on stage. I love performing and it comes across. People have to see you’re passionate
about every note you sing.”
ryant: A Story from an Adopt-A-Student
With the death of George Woodruff, Jr. on May 12, 2011, the Schwob School and Columbus State University
lost a valued friend, trustee and benefactor. Real estate developer, financier and insurance executive,
Mr. Woodruff represented the fourth generation of a family that has greatly impacted Columbus
for more than a century.
A true visionary for our city, he was instrumental in identifying the Shannon Hosiery Mill as the original
home of Columbus College. But, perhaps his greatest legacy is the innovative Woodruff Award Program,
established in 1999 as an important element in the vision to elevate CSU’s Schwob School of Music to
a level of preeminence as one of the leading music schools in the nation. It was Mr. Woodruff’s vision
that this unprecedented award program would ensure that the most talented and gifted students in the
world could be recruited to study and perform at Columbus State University.
His vision has been realized with dozens of students from across the globe receiving Woodruff Awards,
students who could have matriculated at any music school in the world, but came to Columbus State
because of The Woodruff Award Program. This fall 14 Woodruff Scholars are at the Schwob School
studying bassoon, cello, guitar, percussion, piano, trumpet, viola, and violin from three states and ten
foreign countries. George Woodruff and many others in this generous community have made gifts that
will continue to transform the School of Music and the lives of countless students in perpetuity.
For CSU Senior Zachary Bryant, it was a no brainer
that music would be his chosen career path. First finding
his voice in the church choir, Bryant was involved
in choir and musical theater productions throughout
his middle school and high school years.
“I was fascinated with stage performing and felt comfortable
entertaining large audiences,” says Bryant.
“The cycle of rehearsals and performances made me
realize that music would be my life long aspiration.”
Bryant knew he would need more training after high
school. Even though he was a student at Mayde Creek
High School in Houston, TX, he was already familiar with CSU’s Schwob School of Music vocal program. A
former Mayde Creek graduate, CSU vocal alum Carrie Beth Barnett, was already studying at the school with
Professor Earl Coleman, The William and Isabelle Curry Eminent Chair in Voice.
“Carrie Beth would come home and tell us all the great things she was doing and learning at Schwob. So my
high school choir director brought me out for a visit. We saw The Marriage of Figaro, and I took a sample lesson
with Professor Coleman. It seemed the school would be a great fit, and I was right.”
Bryant has found the atmosphere at the Schwob School of Music to be exactly what he wanted. He has plenty
of undergraduate performing opportunities, and the faculty have been personable and willing to help him
progress inside and outside the classroom.
During his four years at CSU, Bryant has been on scholarship through the Adopt-A-Student program. His
scholarship supporter, The Norman S. and Emmy Lou P. Illges Foundation, has allowed him to spend more time
learning and less time worrying about finances. “As an Adopt-A-Student, I have witnessed the great support of
the Schwob School first hand. Meeting my donors as well as other donors has encouraged me to believe there
is a future for music and a future for my career. Fostering that personal relationship with my specific supporters
has led me to greater appreciation for my education.”
Graduating in May, Bryant will next turn his eyes towards graduate school. “As a baritone, my voice will not
be fully developed until my late twenties or early thirties. I want to take the next few years as an opportunity
to focus on my training and growth as a musician before beginning my career.”
As for his education at CSU, Bryant feels it has aptly prepared him for his career path. “Every single class,” he
says, “no matter how seemingly tedious or boring, has made me a better musician. The vocal training is, by far,
some of the best in the undergraduate field. Every aspect of my education at the Schwob has turned me from
a singer into a well-rounded musician. This will allow me to perform with intelligence and specificity.”
