already infected, researchers are coming up with a number of vaccines that would halt the development
of cancerous cells associated with the infection. Pharmaceutical companies such as Merck and GSK are
coming out with vaccines that focus on two specific types of HPV (HPV-16 and HPV-18). Merck—which
hopes to release its vaccine before the end of the year—claims that its vaccine will also fight genital warts.
These vaccines could signify an exciting decrease in the number of women who fall seriously ill from HPVrelated
diseases. Specialists such as Dr. Gina Ogilvie at Vancouver’s Centre for Disease Control say we
are going to see a huge evolution in treatments for HPV over the next several years. > HN
