The <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Life</strong> views<br />

residence hall living as a vital element<br />

<strong>of</strong> the total educational process. Our<br />

residence halls are communities where<br />

students can explore new ideas, meet<br />

different people, engage in responsible<br />

behavior and experience new found<br />

freedom. <strong>Residence</strong> Hall living<br />

provides a multicultural opportunity for students. It’s an opportunity for<br />

students to gain a variety <strong>of</strong> personal learning experiences to supplement and<br />

enhance their academic development. We help students meet their needs<br />

and potential through responsible programming and effective use <strong>of</strong> available<br />

resources.<br />

<strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Life</strong> Staff<br />

The main <strong>of</strong>fice is staffed by a Director,<br />

an Associate Director for Facilities and<br />

Operations, an Assistant Director for<br />

Training and Development, and a Facilities<br />

and Housing Coordinator. In addition, our<br />

support staff consists <strong>of</strong> three Administrative<br />

Assistants and student Customer Service<br />

Representatives, each knowledgeable regarding residence life policies and<br />

procedures and the entire campus. The <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Life</strong> is located on the<br />

first floor <strong>of</strong> Whiteman Hall.<br />

Each residence hall is assigned an experienced, trained <strong>Residence</strong> Hall<br />

Director who has either an advanced degree or is working toward completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> a Master’s degree in counseling, psychology or related field in the helping<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession. The <strong>Residence</strong> Hall Director is responsible for the overall<br />

operation <strong>of</strong> the facility. They maintain <strong>of</strong>fice hours Monday through<br />

Friday in the Community Center, located on the first floor <strong>of</strong> each building.<br />

Undergraduate parapr<strong>of</strong>essionals, Resident Assistants, are assigned to<br />

each floor <strong>of</strong> the residence halls to provide peer counseling, administrative<br />

assistance, program development and mediation. They are the residents’ first<br />

contact for problems, concerns and questions. Security staff, Desk Assistants<br />

and pr<strong>of</strong>essional security staff are stationed at the front doors <strong>of</strong> each hall 24<br />

hours a day 7 days a week. They monitor the flow <strong>of</strong> traffic by residents and<br />

their guests within the residence halls.<br />

<strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Life</strong> Programs and Services<br />

Shuttle Van<br />

A 20-passenger van is in operation for the<br />

residential population. This free service is<br />

available for resident students only and a <strong>Kean</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> Cougar ID card is required in order<br />

to board the shuttle. A special lift accommodates<br />

passengers in wheelchairs. The shuttle does<br />

not operate when the <strong>University</strong> is closed or<br />

during inclement weather. The shuttle frequents<br />

local food markets, department stores and train<br />

stations. The <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Life</strong> reserves the right to modify the shuttle<br />

service for special programs or on-going activities. Students are informed<br />

accordingly.<br />

24 Hour Computer Lab<br />

In order to accommodate the academic needs<br />

<strong>of</strong> the students, Dougall Hall houses a 24 hour<br />

computer lab with approximately 50 computers.<br />

The new upperclassman residence hall will also<br />

feature a computer lab for both desktop and<br />

laptop computers. The labs are available to the<br />

entire <strong>Kean</strong> <strong>University</strong> community.<br />

Cable Television<br />

All apartments have a single outlet in the living room and two outlets in the<br />

bedrooms, and all traditionally styled rooms have two outlets. The system<br />

provides 48 channels <strong>of</strong> basic programming, three <strong>University</strong> channels, and<br />

three premium channels. The cost associated with this service is included in the<br />

overall housing charge.<br />

<strong>Living</strong> Learning Communities<br />

<strong>Living</strong> Learning Communities are a new<br />

concept introduced to our first year students to<br />

create and foster interest from them to become<br />

actively involved with the environment, the arts,<br />

sciences or similar interests. Faculty and staff<br />

will participate in creating an active learning<br />

environment through programming efforts.<br />

Internet Access<br />

All residence halls have wireless access to the Internet. The bedrooms are hard<br />

wired for access to the internet via the university’s network. Students must<br />

provide their own CAT 5 or CAT 6 (network cable) wire to connect from their<br />

personal computers to the university’s network. Students may also use the<br />

computer lab located in Dougall Hall or the new upperclassman residence hall.<br />

Laundry Services<br />

<strong>Residence</strong> halls are equipped with laundry rooms consisting <strong>of</strong> coin-less washers<br />

and dryers. The new upperclassman residence hall and the new traditional style<br />

freshman residence hall contain centralized laundromat style laundry rooms.<br />

Meal Plan<br />

Meal plan options are available through the dining<br />

services personnel. All students living in the<br />

residence halls are required to purchase a meal plan<br />

at a set rate. The <strong>University</strong> provides eateries on<br />

campus to accommodate students’ varied tastes<br />

including the new 300-seat cafeteria located on<br />

the first floor <strong>of</strong> the new upperclassman residence<br />

hall, the Downs Dining Room, the <strong>University</strong><br />

Center Food Court and the Cougar’s Den. Both<br />

the upperclassman residence hall cafeteria and<br />

Downs Hall are “all-you-care-to-eat” buffet style.<br />

Community Kitchens<br />

Located on the first floor <strong>of</strong> all the<br />

upperclassmen apartment style residence<br />

halls and the new freshman residence hall,<br />

amenities include stoves, sinks, tables,<br />

couches and flat screen TV’s.<br />

Security Services<br />

Each residence hall is staffed with 24 hour<br />

security personnel including a student staff<br />

and pr<strong>of</strong>essional security service in order<br />

to monitor traffic and enforce the visitation<br />

policy. In addition, surveillance cameras have<br />

been installed in the lobby areas <strong>of</strong> each hall to<br />

support the security efforts <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Apartments for the Physically<br />

Challenged and Hearing Impaired<br />

Bartlett Hall is equipped with several<br />

apartments designed specifically for the<br />

physically challenged and/or hearing impaired.<br />

If you should require any <strong>of</strong> these particular<br />

accommodations, contact the <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Life</strong> immediately.<br />

Telephone System<br />

All bedrooms are equipped with a phone line. Standard features include<br />

voicemail, caller I.D. and call waiting. Students can receive and make roomto-room<br />

calls by dialing the final five digits <strong>of</strong> the telephone number at no cost.<br />

Local and long distance calls can be made by purchasing calling cards and using<br />

the toll free number. To utilize the telephone system, students must provide<br />

their own telephone.<br />

<strong>Campus</strong> <strong>Life</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> Center<br />

Aside from hosting the majority <strong>of</strong><br />

the cultural, educational, and social<br />

programs on campus, the <strong>University</strong><br />

Center, conveniently located in the<br />

center <strong>of</strong> campus, houses the UC<br />

Computer Lab, the Cougar’s Den, the<br />

Food Court, TV lounge, game room,<br />

campus bookstore, a theatre, and<br />

multiple <strong>of</strong>fices and meeting rooms.<br />

Resident Student Association<br />

The RSA is the <strong>of</strong>ficial elected student<br />

governing body <strong>of</strong> the residence halls and was<br />

established to promote cooperation between<br />

students and administrative personnel<br />

regarding on-campus affairs. This is an<br />

excellent opportunity to get involved, help<br />

plan events, and develop leadership skills.<br />

Computer Labs<br />

The <strong>University</strong> Center and Dougall Computer<br />

Labs are state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art facilities, each <strong>of</strong>fering<br />

over 50 computer stations. The <strong>University</strong> Center<br />

Computer Lab is conveniently located in the<br />

<strong>University</strong> Center Atrium, while the Dougall<br />

lab is housed in the Dougall residence hall. Both<br />

labs are open to all <strong>Kean</strong> <strong>University</strong> students,<br />

faculty and staff. A desktop and laptop computer<br />

lab is also located on the first floor <strong>of</strong> the new<br />

upperclassman residence hall, so there are plenty<br />

<strong>of</strong> places to go if you need to type a paper.<br />

Game Room<br />

The <strong>University</strong> Center Game Room provides<br />

a recreational area designed to <strong>of</strong>fer a fun<br />

getaway with many activities available. We invite you to visit the game room, relax,<br />

enjoy a game <strong>of</strong> pool and exercise your interpersonal skills in an environment<br />

where it is impossible not to meet interesting people. If you like to play where you<br />

live an additional Game Room is located<br />

in each <strong>of</strong> the new residence halls.<br />

<strong>Campus</strong> Dining Halls<br />

<strong>Kean</strong> <strong>University</strong> houses six on-campus<br />

eateries. Depending on your appetite, you<br />

can visit the “All-you-care-to-eat” buffet in<br />

Downs Hall or in the new upperclassman<br />

residence hall. If you are in the mood for<br />

a light snack you can stop by the Cougar’s<br />

Den Snack Bar and Grill in<br />

the <strong>University</strong> Center. Are you<br />

meeting your friends for a study<br />

break? Perhaps the Starbucks<br />

located on the 3rd Floor <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Center for Academic Success will<br />

fulfill your caffeine needs. Each<br />

location <strong>of</strong>fers a menu abundant<br />

in options and convenient hours,<br />

even for late night hunger.<br />

Student <strong>Life</strong> & Leadership Development<br />

Throughout the academic year the<br />

<strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> Student <strong>Life</strong> and Leadership<br />

Development, along with various student<br />

groups, coordinates various activities<br />

to give you that much needed break<br />

outside <strong>of</strong> the classroom. Some <strong>of</strong> the<br />

activities include Homecoming, movies,<br />

bus trips, hypnotists, concerts, comedy<br />

shows and much more. In addition the<br />

<strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> Student <strong>Life</strong> and Leadership<br />

Development coordinates several<br />

leadership lecture series to develop<br />

essential leadership skills for the<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional world.<br />

Greek <strong>Life</strong><br />

Greek Organizations provide a milieu<br />

<strong>of</strong> intellectual achievement, awareness<br />

<strong>of</strong> social responsibility, social and<br />

personal development, and respect for human diversity. Fraternities and<br />

Sororities can <strong>of</strong>fer a rich and rewarding<br />

experience for those who choose to<br />

affiliate. <strong>Kean</strong> <strong>University</strong> recognizes<br />

over thirty organizations; each one has<br />

something different to <strong>of</strong>fer and is unique<br />

in its own way.<br />

<strong>Campus</strong> Organizations<br />

<strong>Kean</strong> <strong>University</strong> recognizes over 130<br />

campus organizations. Whether you<br />

desire active membership in<br />

the student government, an<br />

honor society or a fraternity or<br />

sorority <strong>Kean</strong> has something for<br />

everyone. The various types <strong>of</strong><br />

student organizations include<br />

cultural groups, religious groups,<br />

performance groups, media<br />

groups, service groups, academic<br />

groups and much more!<br />

Recreation and Intramurals<br />

Recreation and intramural sports <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

students, faculty and staff a fun and<br />

competitive way to stay in shape and engage<br />

in on-campus sports, regardless <strong>of</strong> their ability<br />

level. Sports <strong>of</strong>fered include flag football,<br />

tennis, dodge ball and basketball. Special<br />

events and open recreation opportunities<br />

include volleyball, indoor soccer, and s<strong>of</strong>tball.<br />

The recently renovated D’Angola weight<br />

room, open to all students, is equipped<br />

with top <strong>of</strong> the line <strong>Life</strong> Fitness and<br />

Hammer Strength equipment, plasma TVs<br />

and a stereo system.<br />

Athletic Facilities<br />

<strong>Kean</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers students the chance<br />

to play sixteen different NCAA Division<br />

III sports. The newly built Harwood<br />

Arena, opened in Fall 2006, is home to<br />

the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams,<br />

while the <strong>Kean</strong> Alumni Stadium, which holds<br />

more than 5,000 proud students, faculty and fans<br />

is home to many different on-campus teams.<br />

The campus also includes the newly renovated<br />

Jim Hynes ’62 Stadium, opened in Spring 2008,<br />

and Cougar Field, where the baseball and s<strong>of</strong>tball<br />

teams play, respectively.<br />

Nancy Thompson Library<br />

The Nancy Thompson Library <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kean</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

is a comprehensive information and learning center<br />

that <strong>of</strong>fers specialized collections and services<br />

designed to meet the academic information needs<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Kean</strong> <strong>University</strong> community. Located in the<br />

heart <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Kean</strong> campus, the Nancy Thompson<br />

Library houses the Library’s print, media, and online<br />

collections. The Library contains three floors <strong>of</strong><br />

study areas where students can meet their study<br />

group or study alone.<br />

Eligibility and Applying for On-<strong>Campus</strong> Housing<br />

Occupancy in the residence halls is open to full<br />

time (12 or more credits) undergraduate students.<br />

Students interested in living on campus must<br />

submit a <strong>Residence</strong> Hall Contract form and a $100<br />

non-refundable application processing fee.<br />

There are currently six residence facilities on<br />

campus: two “traditionalstyle”<br />

residence halls<br />

(Dougall and Whiteman)<br />

and four apartment-style<br />

residence halls (Bartlett,<br />

Burch, Sozio and Rogers).<br />

Two additional residence<br />

halls will open in September 2009. The first facility<br />

will feature upperclassman apartments and the<br />

second will house freshman in traditional style suites.<br />
