ARTS AND CRAFTS<br />

Coconut Basket Weaving<br />

Learn the mechanics <strong>and</strong> skill <strong>of</strong> weaving coconut leaves<br />

to make a basket or bowl. Students will also make baskets<br />

varying in size from 10-20 leaves. <strong>Hawaii</strong>ans used these<br />

items for the storage <strong>of</strong> food ranging from kalo to fish.<br />

Keoni Aweau Turalde is a <strong>Hawaii</strong>an carver <strong>of</strong> pahu, wa‘a<br />

<strong>and</strong> ‘ulu maika (drums, canoes <strong>and</strong> bowling stones).<br />

He teaches, practices <strong>and</strong> demonstr<strong>at</strong>es these <strong>Hawaii</strong>an<br />

arts <strong>at</strong> Lihikai <strong>Hawaii</strong>an Cultural Learning Center <strong>and</strong> <strong>at</strong><br />

cultural festivals around the isl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

Color! Oil Pastels<br />

How to make color work for you…this is Color theory the fun way! Work with oil pastels,<br />

learn why colors do wh<strong>at</strong> they do <strong>and</strong> how to use them to your advantage. With instruction<br />

<strong>and</strong> tips provided, oil pastels become an exciting <strong>and</strong> economical medium for expression.<br />

Developed in Japan in the 1920’s, we will work with the original Sakura br<strong>and</strong>. Limit 8-15<br />

students.<br />

Crafting<br />

Learn a fun new craft every week with Hiroko Takayama, a long time craftsperson <strong>and</strong> crafts<br />

instructor. She will teach you how to make a variety <strong>of</strong> crafts for every occasion th<strong>at</strong> can be<br />

used as gifts or simply to enjoy for yourself. Participants don’t need to bring anything for the<br />

first <strong>class</strong>. Instructor will give supply lists for subsequent <strong>class</strong>es <strong>at</strong> first <strong>class</strong>. Be prepared<br />

to purchase special craft kits from the instructor upon first day <strong>of</strong> instruction. Each project<br />

will require a different kit. Projects may change upon students’ in-<strong>class</strong> requests. Limit 10<br />

students.<br />

Drawing for Beginners & Intermedi<strong>at</strong>es<br />

Judith Zeichner introduces students to the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> drawing: perspective, proportion,<br />

drawing aids, composition, line <strong>and</strong> value quality. Cre<strong>at</strong>ivity <strong>and</strong> technique are stressed through<br />

various exercises using still life objects. As the course progresses, the figure is employed <strong>and</strong><br />

live models are used with lessons on proportion, action, the head <strong>and</strong> composition. Students<br />

will develop exp<strong>and</strong>ed powers <strong>of</strong> observ<strong>at</strong>ion, drawing skills <strong>and</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ive interpret<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

M<strong>at</strong>erials needed include: 14”x 17” drawing pad, gray pastel paper, drawing pencils (2B-8B),<br />

compressed charcoal, white chalk <strong>and</strong> a kneaded eraser.<br />

Hone your songwriting skills in this one day workshop taught by visiting instructor <strong>and</strong><br />

Join Darin Miyashiro, koto instructor <strong>at</strong> UH Manoa <strong>and</strong> Sawai Koto Kai <strong>Hawaii</strong>, for a<br />

unique chance to explore the history, culture <strong>and</strong> techniques <strong>of</strong> the koto (13-stringed zither).<br />

Darin will combine lecture <strong>and</strong> performance <strong>of</strong> short pieces to demonstr<strong>at</strong>e the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> koto music in Japan, from its court origins to present day compositions. This event is<br />

Darin Miyashiro was born in Honolulu <strong>and</strong> raised in <strong>Hilo</strong>. He received his instructor’s<br />

certific<strong>at</strong>e from Tokyo’s Sawai Koto Academy 1995 after studying <strong>class</strong>ic <strong>and</strong> contemporary<br />

koto music with Kazue Sawai <strong>and</strong> other masters. Since 1997 he has<br />

been a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Hawaii</strong> Gagaku Kenkyukai studying<br />

the gaku-so (ancient koto used in court music) <strong>and</strong> has<br />

performed in <strong>Hawaii</strong>, Washington D.C., Germany,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Japan. In 1998 he had the opportunity to<br />

study <strong>class</strong>ical Ryukyu (Okinawan) koto <strong>and</strong><br />

performed with the Ukwanshin Kabudan in<br />

with Cyril Pahinui<br />

Learn to play the sweet <strong>and</strong> soulful<br />

guitar sounds <strong>of</strong> Hawai’i. Cyril Pahinui,<br />

a traditional master <strong>of</strong> Kiho’alu or<br />

slack key guitar, provides the perfect<br />

instruction to this rich tradition. Students<br />

<strong>of</strong> all levels will be guided through simple<br />

exercises <strong>and</strong> solos to cre<strong>at</strong>e the “slack key” sound.<br />

Slack key can be played on any guitar, acoustic or electric.<br />

The term refers to both the musical style <strong>and</strong> the myriad ways<br />

the instrument is tuned. Cyril teaches several traditional tunings <strong>and</strong> focuses on those<br />

beaches, it ruins our shorelines <strong>and</strong> NOAA has a program to help clean it up.<br />

Zoo Docent Training<br />

The Pana‘ewa Rainforest Zoo <strong>and</strong> Garden’s Docent Training Course is a rich learning<br />

experience which will culmin<strong>at</strong>e in the opportunity to represent the Zoo as a docent for<br />

the various groups touring the facility. The Zoo asks th<strong>at</strong> Docent trainees make a 1 year<br />

commitment to the Zoo, volunteering to guide Zoo visitors, school groups <strong>and</strong> others as<br />

Students will study <strong>and</strong> learn the basic techniques <strong>of</strong> tai chi <strong>and</strong> medical qigong as a health<br />

care practice th<strong>at</strong> have been <strong>at</strong> the “heart <strong>of</strong> China” for several thous<strong>and</strong> years. We will travel<br />

to Hebei Medical Qigong School <strong>and</strong> Hospital, China’s first Medical Qigong training base,<br />

loc<strong>at</strong>ed four hours north <strong>of</strong> Beijing in a beautiful seaside community. Participants will also<br />

have the opportunity to immerse in the ancient culture <strong>of</strong> China <strong>at</strong> the Old Dragon’s Head,<br />

where the Gre<strong>at</strong> Wall Meets the Sea, Longevity Mountain, First Pass<br />

Under Heaven as well as time to explore the local community<br />

<strong>and</strong> Chinese way <strong>of</strong> life!<br />

A Peru Adventure – Cuzco, Machu<br />

Picchu <strong>and</strong> the Nazca Lines<br />

OLLI <strong>at</strong> UH <strong>Hilo</strong> is teaming up with OLLI <strong>at</strong> UH Manoa in presenting this exciting Peru<br />

adventure. An escorted tour <strong>of</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ural discovery <strong>and</strong> culture to Peru. See <strong>and</strong> study the<br />

Tom Sheeran, an instructor in the OLLI <strong>at</strong> UH Manoa program,<br />

has <strong>at</strong> different times in his career been a history/geography<br />

teacher, a navig<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong>ficer on research vessels, <strong>and</strong><br />

an importer <strong>of</strong> h<strong>and</strong>icrafts <strong>and</strong> folk art from L<strong>at</strong>in<br />

America. He developed a lifelong interest in<br />

the pre-Columbian civiliz<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> Peru after<br />

a youthful introduction to Thor Heyerdahl’s<br />

theory <strong>of</strong> the connection between ancient<br />

Peruvian <strong>and</strong> Polynesian cultures. Tom<br />

has traveled frequently to Peru since<br />

1980 <strong>and</strong> is particularly knowledgeable<br />

about traditional textiles <strong>and</strong> folk art.<br />
