he orientation team has been working hard over the fall semester to provide a program that will help
you become a successful UH Hilo student. As new Vulcans, you share something in common attending
UH Hilo is a NEW experience for all of you! You all are now part of the UH Hilo ‘ohana (family). This
is YOUR opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, meet new friends, get involved in leadership roles and/or
activities, and to take responsibility for your academic goals. During the next two days, student leaders, faculty and
staff will provide support and direct you to resources that will help you during your college career. The enclosed
schedule is specifically designed to give you the tools to help you succeed during your first semester at UH Hilo and
beyond. You are EXPECTED to attend each session. In these sessions, we are providing you all the resources that you
will need to be informed and prepared for the semester. We also encourage you to participate in the social activities
as these foster a sense of community. You’ve invested in yourself by participating in orientation – so make the most
of your experiences. More importantly, make the most of your time as a UH Hilo Vulcan!

PLACEMENT EXAM INFORMATION
IMPORT INFORMATION: Placement exams offered are
at different times during the week of Orientation. Be sure
to check the requirements for your major to see if you will
need to take these placement exams. For a list of major
requirements, please refer to the UH Hilo Catalog available
online at: http://hilo.hawaii.edu/catalog/.
Chemistry Placement Exam
Students who wish to enroll in CHEM 114 or CHEM 124
(General Chemistry I) and have not passed CHEM 114 (or
the equivalent) with a “C” or better are required to take
the chemistry placement exam. Advanced registration is
required for this exam.

Computer Competency
Only Students who are planning to register for 300 or
400-level business courses or QBA 260 for the spring need to
take this exam.

What is STAR? What is a TCE? This
session will teach you the basics of
how to utilize the student information
system known as STAR. Utilizing STAR

with your faculty advisor will keep
you on track toward graduation. For
students who transferred in with prior
college credits, this session will help
you understand your TCE (Transfer
Credit Evaluation).
