PRE-ORIENTATION EVENTS Wednesday, January 4th TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS This time is for you to “take care of business”. You can buy your books, get your student ID card, visit the nurse, meet with your advisor, take placement exams, pay campus fees, etc. Please use this time to take care of business so you can attend all the great orientation programming we have planned for you. Come get your UH Hilo Success Bag before attending the Vulcan Pride Breakfast. There will also be an information table to answer any questions you may have about orientation, UH Hilo campus, or Hilo in general. Ask us, we can help. 7:30am-9:00am Campus Center Plaza VULCAN WELCOME BREAKFAST Aloha! E komo mai (Welcome) and congratulations on becoming the newest member of the UH Hilo Vulcan family! We will first welcome you into the Vulcan family by introducing you to our Orientation Team and then kick off with our featured speaker Interim Director of Kïpuka Native Hawaiian Student Center, Kainoa Ariola. The Welcome Vulcan Breakfast, hosted by HomeStreet Bank, will start the day off by nourishing you after a long journey to UH Hilo and also share with you the importance of your role as our newest Vulcan member in the UH Hilo community. As a sponsor of this morning’s breakfast, representatives from HomeStreet Bank will be available for most of the day to address any of your banking needs. 9:00am-9:50am Campus Center Dining Hall GOOD MORNING UH HILO Welcome to UH Hilo! We are excited to have you as the newest member of the Vulcan Family and we are here to make sure you have all the tools to succeed! This grand welcome will introduce you to the academic community, review your student role and responsibility to the University and hear from a number of our administrators to help guide you on your journey. During this session, you, together with your peers, will be asked to exchange statements of commitment between you and your soon-to-be-faculty to engage in a mutually positive, ethical and respectful manner in the unwavering pursuit of intellectual inquiry and growth. This academic ceremony and celebration marks the beginning of your educational career at UH Hilo. 10:30am-11:30am Campus Center 301 SHUTTLE TO ‘IMILOA ASTRONOMY CENTER OF HAWAI’I Take the complementary Student Life Center sponsored shuttles to ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai’i for the wonderful buffet lunch catered by the Sky Garden restaurant. Here you will enjoy your lunch and have the opportunity to interact with the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and special panel guests. 11:30am-11:50am Campus Center Plaza - 6 - VICE CHANCELLOR FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS STUDENT AND PARENT/ FAMILY LUNCHEON The Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Dr. Luoluo Hong, invites you to a special luncheon where you will enjoy an ono (delicious) lunch especially selected for this event, hear from our featured panelists, and get a taste of the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai’i experience. The featured panel session, entitled “Now that You Got Into College, How Can You Stay In? Making Wise Decisions,” features Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dr. Luoluo Hong, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs & Dean of Students, Dr. Kelly Oaks; Counselor, Counseling Services, Student Health & Wellness Services, Sheri Tresky; Interim Director for the Women’s Center, Michele Newman; and Associate Director for National Student Exchange & Advisor, Men of Strength, Zach Street. Immediately following this session, parents/family members will meet with a panel of select administrators and staff in an adjacent classroom, while students will meet with Deans and their faculty in various locations. 12:00pm-1:30pm ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai’i (Please take shuttle to Center) MEET THE DEANS & COLLEGE MEET AND GREETS Immediately after the VCSA Student and Family luncheon, new Vulcan’s have the opportunity to meet with the Dean and/or faculty of their major college who will share some opening remarks and will encourage you to meet with the various faculty within the college on a more personal level. This is an opportunity to get to know the Dean and/or faculty in your College and outside of the normal advising sessions. College of Hawaiian Language (CHL): Hawaiian Language Classroom Pre-Pharmacy Students: Moana Hoku Room Undeclared students are encouraged to meet with the major that most interests them. 1:30pm-1:50pm ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai’i HEALTH, SAFETY, & EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR PERSONAL SAFETY Concerned about alcohol and drug abuse on the island? What are the facts and pertinent information you need to know? When it comes to emergency preparedness, is UH Hilo ready to keep your student safe? Our Campus Security Office will share campus safety tips and services available to students. 2:15pm-3:20pm Campus Center 301 NAVIGATING STAR AND UNDERSTANDING YOUR TRANSFER CREDIT EVALUATION What is STAR? What is a TCE? This session will teach you the basics of how to utilize the student information system known as STAR. Utilizing STAR in conjunction with regular meetings with your faculty advisor will keep you on track toward graduation. For students who transferred in with prior college credits, this session will help you understand your TCE (Transfer Credit Evaluation). 3:30pm-4:30pm Campus Center 301 KANIKAPILA ‘OHANA DINNER (This event requires advanced registration and additional payment.) It’s a Hawaiian jam session! We will celebrate your journey through UH Hilo as the traditional Hawaiians have always done…with ono grinds (delicious food) and local music. Your payment and registration to this exclusive event includes entrance into this special Kanikapila that will feature local talent, the Kuahiwis, and traditional Hawaiian grinds (food). Feel free to bring your own guitar, ukulele, or any other musical instrument if you want to jam too! Space is limited, so be sure to sign up early! 5:30pm-7:30pm Campus Center 301 ORIENTATION EVENTS FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 2012 ALL AROUND THE BANYAN TREE Take a tour of your new home and learn helpful tips about campus resources from your group leaders; find where your classes will be; learn a little history about the UH Hilo campus; visit the new Student Life Center facility-the place to start healthy living; and finally, stop at the UH Hilo bookstore to take a glimpse of what books to buy or rent for your classes and to pick up some UH Hilo gear. 8:00am-9:00am Campus Center Plaza BIG ISLAND FEDERAL CREDIT UNION CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST AND INFORMATION STATION Enjoy a continental breakfast to start your day off right! Orientation Leaders will be available to answer any questions before your day begins. As a sponsor of this morning’s breakfast, representatives from Big Island Federal Credit Union will be available for most of the day to address any of your banking needs. 8:30am-9:50am Campus Center Plaza HOW TO FIND A JOB ON CAMPUS Need a little extra money while in school? Want a job on campus? Are you still in the exploring your career path? In this session, you will learn about employment opportunities and about the valuable services and resources the Career Development Services Office has to offer. The Career Development Services staff can help you identify your strengths and career interests so you can make the best of your academic planning. Graduation will come sooner than you know and you will want to make sure you will be fully prepared to enter the workforce. This is a session you don’t want to miss! - 7 - 10:00 am - 10:50 am Campus Center 301 BUDGETING 101 WITH HOMESTREET BANK HomeStreet Bank provides this special session to help you develop basic budgeting skills - especially helpful during the economic challenges that we face today. They will also touch on building a “healthy” credit line, the importance of your credit and your ability to acquire funds when necessary. 11:00 am - 11:50 am Campus Center 301 MALAMA THE AINA – STUDENT LUNCHEON Hawai’i, the Big Island, is a natural laboratory for exploration. What do you need to know before venturing out to local spots like Boiling Pots, South Point & Green Sands Beach, or even surfing the waves of Honoli’i Beach Park? This session will provide you with local tips that will help you discover and appreciate all the natural beauty that the Big Island is known for and to become aware of the dangers behind the beauty. This session is presented by the Hawaii Fire Department. 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm Campus Center 301 FIT BODY, SOUND MIND, AND CARING FOR YOUR HEALTH Learn about some of the ways to keep yourself healthy and happy while on your way to becoming more wise! Take advantage of the services and programs offered on campus which promote healthful living. 2:00 pm - 2:50 pm Campus Center 306 SPECIAL STUDENT SUPPORT GROUP SESSIONS Students who are attending UH Hilo on the National Student Exchange Program or the English Language Institute will meet with the Directors of their programs. Students not in one of these special groups will have this time for registration, campus tour, or to relax before this evening’s Shop ‘Til You Drop event. 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
