Starting 1998 off with a roar, international Concurrent
customer, debis Systemhaus (a company of Daimler-Benz
InterServices), has purchased two Concurrent
PowerMAXIONs, seven Power Hawk 640s, and twenty Power
Hawk 620s totaling $1.2 million for a large R&D, overhaul, and main-
Daimler-Benz InterServices Commits
to Concurrent Real-Time Systems
Although debis Systemhaus is a long-time customer of Concurrent,
this was a landmark project. It required both companies to collaborate
on a system design that would handle the harsh environmental conditions
(-20 o to + 95 o C) existing within the test facility. debis Systemhaus
was committed to use Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) equipment
as much as possible while meeting the ruggedized system requirements.
Other application requirements included: high-performance real-time
systems; large I/O count; a totally distributed system; flexibility in test
system configurations; large disk storage; and the use of third-party
COTS software (e.g. National Instruments’ LabVIEW ® ).
VP REAL-TIME SYSTEMS REPORT
Robert T.
Menzel, Vice
President,
Real-Time
Systems
Over the past six quarters,
the “new” Concurrent has
moved out of the transition
phase, and is heading forward
as planned.
The quarter just completed was
the sixth consecutive quarter where
Concurrent achieved profitability.
The results speak for themselves
and I am extremely pleased with the
real-time market performance.
Profit from operations continued
to increase $2.2 million for the
quarter, demonstrating the improved
performance and favorable trend
experienced by Concurrent since its
acquisition of Harris Computer
Systems. We are very satisfied with
these results and are well-positioned
for the rest of the fiscal year. Our
balance sheet continues to strengthen
as Concurrent paid off its long-term
debt during January – six months
ahead of plan.
The Concurrent Users Meeting is
always a homecoming of sorts.
Throughout the course of the
year, we get the opportunity to meet
many of our customers on a one-to-one
basis. This yearly meeting, however,
brings all of our customers together.
It is a prime opportunity to hear our
customers’ feedback and to
communicate with each other.
At the Concurrent Users Meeting,
customers from different industries get
to meet one another. The government
training industry integrator has the
opportunity to meet with the
commercial engine test engineer – they
often find they have a lot in common.
Real-time sales remain strong with
major sales in Q2 to debis (see cover
story) and the U.S. Navy (see page 6) –
Concurrent continues to dominate the
real-time market and anticipates major
contracts for the second half of the
fiscal year.
To help spearhead our move into
the real-time software market,
Dale Burton was brought on board to
serve as Concurrent’s Vice President
of Software Sales (see story page 3).
Mr. Burton’s 25 years of experience in
software sales brings an aggressive and
leading-edge software supervisor to the
Concurrent managerial ranks.
We are committed to real-time technology,
to both hardware and software
development, and to our existing and
new real-time customers.
This year’s crowd is a diverse group,
representing the changes in
Concurrent’s business base. While we
continue to serve the government and
aerospace markets, we find our
products and services becoming more
popular with international customers,
commercial accounts, and integrators
looking for a scalable real-time
software solution.
The common thread at this year’s
Users Meeting will be Concurrent’s
commitment to excellence in real-time
computing environments. I hope to see
you there.

Concurrent wins U.S. Navy contract
for AEGIS class ship program.
The Boeing Company selects
Concurrent systems for
avionics simulations project.
Concurrent Awarded $2 Million Contract for
U.S. Navy AEGIS Class Ship Application
After four years of benchmark
testing and competitive
analysis, a purchasing agent
on behalf of the U.S. Navy awarded a
$2 million contract to Concurrent for
five PowerMAXIONs, PowerWorks
software, and maintenance.
Initially, the Concurrent real-time
hardware and software will be used
for engineering development and
system tests. Future plans involve
installing the systems on the U.S.
Navy’s AEGIS class destroyers
and cruisers for shipboard radar and
weapons control systems. In production,
each AEGIS class destroyer
shipset will use four Concurrent
computer systems (there are 57 ships
in the current Navy plan).
For this important application, the
U.S. Navy required a powerful real-
Concurrent Awarded Boeing Avionics Contract
The Boeing Company continues
to select Concurrent systems
for its simulation needs.
Recently, Boeing Information,
Space & Defense Systems, chose a
Night Hawk ® solution for one of its
complex avionics projects. The total
contract was for $532,040.
Boeing was contracted by the U.S.
Air Force to upgrade the avionics on
the Conventional Air Launched
Cruise Missile (CALCM) – the only
air-launched, conventionally armed,
long-range standoff missile in the Air
Force inventory today. Boeing
selected Concurrent’s Night Hawk
solution because it combined a highperformance
real-time computer
system with a comprehensive
development and run-time UNIX-based
environment. This total, integrated
solution will be used to develop
the CALCM’s upgraded avionics.
time system to replace existing systems
utilizing AN/UYK technology. Other
system requirements included the
ability to accommodate 6U boards and
to port existing Ada software to the
new environment.
“Concurrent has met the defense
industry’s most demanding real-time
needs for over thirty years,” said
E. Corky Siegel, Chairman of the Board,
President, and Chief Executive Officer,
Concurrent Computer Corporation.
“Winning the AEGIS project is the
result of maintaining superiority in the
real-time market. We worked closely
with Lockheed Martin and the Navy
over the past four years and will
continue to support them with
technology upgrades as additional
systems are deployed over the next
ten years.”
Said E. Corky Siegel, Chairman of
the Board, President, and Chief
Executive Officer, Concurrent
Computer Corporation, “Concurrent’s
proven track record of supplying
Boeing with excellent customer service
and support over the years was a key
factor in this sale. Our long-term dedication
to customers such as Boeing is
one of the values that sets us apart from
the competition.”
Boeing Information, Space &
Defense Systems, a subsidiary of
The Boeing Company, specializes in
integrated aerospace solutions for
commercial, defense, and civil customers.
Defense and space programs
include helicopters, military aircraft,
missiles, missile-defense systems,
advanced electronic systems, and
rocket boosters.
$1.2 Million Sale to Debis
Continued from page 1
Project to Revolutionize
Engine Testing
Integrating Concurrent’s real-time
systems with debis software, debis has
developed a new system, called an
Intelligent Signal Condition Unit
(ISCU), that will revolutionize engine
testing. With debis's ISCUs, double
wiring is eliminated because the junction
boxes are replaced by the ISCUs.
The ISCUs, which contain the pressure
transducers, also eliminate the need to
pipe the engine’s pressure data back to
the computer systems. A simple
Ethernet connection replaces the entire
pressure subsystem in the computer
room.
In the past, an engine test facility
would come to a halt when an R&D
engine failed to start or had a minor
problem. Using debis's ISCUs, manufacturers
can resolve the problem by
simply connecting two cables – an
Ethernet cable and a Reflective Memory
cable. All I/O data will be passed through
the high speed Reflective Memory System
to the host system.
ISCUs also reduce the investment in
capital equipment. Most test facilities test
one type of engine or a model series of
engines. But each test facility contains
enough I/O and computer systems to do
whatever test is required. Since the ISCUs
contain the I/O, there is no need for costly
I/O subsystems in each test facility.
Instead, only simple workstations to
display information to the operators
and engineers are required.
In addition, ISCUs solve the wiring
problems between the engine and
computer room. With ISCUs, the engines
are wired and tested in the staging area
and then downloaded to the host system.
Concurrent Expands Worldwide Presence
