the future. From lively intellectual discussions<br />
in classes to independent research studies,<br />
UCM’s graduate programs will take you<br />
further toward your ultimate career goal.<br />
UCM is fully accredited by the North <strong>Central</strong><br />
Association <strong>of</strong> Colleges and Schools <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Higher Learning Commission, and many <strong>of</strong><br />
our programs are accredited by specific<br />
national associations so you know you’re<br />
receiving the highest quality education for<br />
your investment. Our student-to-faculty ratio is<br />
17:1, which means you will receive ample time<br />
and attention from your instructors throughout<br />
your program. With more than 40 master’s<br />
degree programs and seven education<br />
specialist programs, you’ll be able to further<br />
your knowledge in the field that helps you<br />
advance your career.<br />
How to Apply<br />
All students applying to a degree program are required to:<br />
• Submit a formal application at ucmo.edu/gradapply.<br />
• Submit <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts <strong>of</strong> all undergraduate and<br />
graduate coursework.<br />
• Include a $30 nonrefundable application fee.<br />
Regular admission requires a bachelor’s degree from UCM<br />
or from another regionally accredited institution recognized<br />
by the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Missouri</strong>.<br />
When all materials are complete, the graduate studies <strong>of</strong>fice will<br />
conduct an initial evaluation. If you meet the requirements for<br />
admission to graduate study, your materials will be forwarded to the<br />
department that houses your program <strong>of</strong> choice for its consideration.<br />
The department then will notify you <strong>of</strong> action taken and your admission<br />
status. Once admitted to the program, a departmental adviser will assist<br />
you in formulating a program <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

How to Apply: International Students<br />
UCM is home to students from more than 50 countries and is proud<br />
<strong>of</strong> its international student body. To join them, apply for admission at<br />

GraduatE Studies<br />
FUNDING<br />
Federal Financial Aid<br />
Federal financial aid will help you as a graduate<br />
student pursuing a master’s or education<br />
specialist degree at UCM. Aid can be used toward<br />
the cost <strong>of</strong> tuition, books or other living expenses<br />
so you can focus on attaining your degree.<br />
You must be fully admitted into a graduate degree<br />
program and enrolled at least on a half-time basis<br />
(four graduate credit hours during the fall and<br />
spring semesters) to receive assistance from the<br />
Stafford loan federal aid programs.<br />
The Stafford loan program provides a low-interest<br />
loan assistance that usually does not have to<br />
be repaid until after completion <strong>of</strong> your degree<br />
program.<br />
Graduate Adviser<br />
Once you are admitted to a graduate program,<br />
a faculty member in your department will be<br />
appointed as your graduate adviser. Your graduate<br />
adviser will help you plan your program <strong>of</strong> study<br />
and provide advice to you as you progress through<br />
graduate school.<br />
Graduate Assistantships<br />
Many students use graduate assistantships<br />
to provide financial support while gaining<br />
valuable pr<strong>of</strong>essional experiences in their field<br />
<strong>of</strong> study. Duties vary depending on the type <strong>of</strong><br />
assistantship, but include areas such as: teaching,<br />
laboratory, research, administration and student<br />
engagement. Each department appoints its own<br />
graduate assistant.<br />

Administration<br />
The compensation for a full-time graduate<br />
assistant (20 hours per week) is $3,750 per<br />
semester or $7,500 for two semesters.<br />
Graduate assistants are also eligible for a<br />
scholarship that will be applied to the cost <strong>of</strong><br />
coursework.<br />

Graduate Student<br />
Association<br />
The Graduate Student Association gives you<br />
a forum <strong>of</strong> your peers for discussion <strong>of</strong> issues<br />
concerning graduate students. The GSA<br />
appoints graduate student representatives<br />
to a number <strong>of</strong> university committees and<br />
governance groups. All graduate students<br />
actively enrolled are automatically members <strong>of</strong><br />
the GSA.<br />
Research Funding<br />
The Willard North Research Awards are<br />
named in honor <strong>of</strong> “Will” North, who devoted<br />
many years to fostering research activities at<br />
UCM. These awards promote and encourage<br />
the highest levels <strong>of</strong> graduate research and<br />
scholarly investigation.<br />
North was a proponent <strong>of</strong> sound research<br />
design, appropriate statistical techniques,<br />
and proper interpretation <strong>of</strong> results. Proposed<br />
projects are usually considered as joint student/<br />
faculty research or student thesis development.<br />
Proposals may be submitted at any time.<br />
In addition, the Graduate Student Research<br />
Award brings recognition and reward to<br />
the authors <strong>of</strong> exemplary research in UCM’s<br />
graduate programs. Faculty members identify<br />
and submit outstanding student theses to the<br />
competition.<br />
Scholarships<br />
The Graduate Student Achievement Award, the<br />
President’s Diversity Scholarship, Graduate<br />
Non-Resident Scholarship, Warren C. Lovinger<br />
Scholarship, the Reid Hemphill Outstanding<br />
Graduate Student Award and many disciplinespecific<br />
scholarships are available to graduate<br />
students.<br />

Child Care<br />
UCM supports two child care centers on campus. The centers are<br />
located in Foster-Knox Apartments and the community center at<br />
<strong>Central</strong> Village. Daily care routines are planned according to the<br />
age and development <strong>of</strong> the children within the classrooms. The<br />
centers provide care for children from six weeks to 10 years old,<br />
and enrollment is determined from a waiting list. To learn more<br />

Entertainment<br />
UCM has been bringing art and entertainment to <strong>Missouri</strong><br />
since its founding in 1871. Students participate in more<br />
than 200 clubs and organizations on campus, from rugby to<br />
pre-law, and religious groups to cultural programs. UCM’s public<br />
broadcasting stations, KMOS-TV and KTBG-FM 90.9 The Bridge,<br />
<strong>of</strong>fer high-quality programs that are relevant and entertaining for<br />
the whole family.<br />
Housing and Dining<br />
UCM has alternatives to traditional residence halls to accommodate<br />
any lifestyle. Our six apartment complexes were specifically<br />
designed to provide an economical living option for all types <strong>of</strong><br />
students, including graduate, married and family housing. Every<br />
room <strong>of</strong>fers a fiber-optic Internet link, cable TV hookup and<br />
parking.<br />
library<br />
The James C. Kirkpatrick Library houses volumes <strong>of</strong> books,<br />
periodicals and other publications and print resources. It also<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers electronic resources such as the <strong>Missouri</strong> Bibliographic<br />
Information User System, a powerful network that connects<br />
students, faculty and staff to a full statewide database. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
staff members provide expert reference information in specific<br />
