Letter from the President Dear Friends As I write this, spring is in full bloom and memories of winter fun and Titanic icebergs seem far behind us. The success of last fall’s blockbuster, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, continues to provide momentum for the RMSC’s progress in 2010, helping us maximize the positive impact we have on Monroe County. Rochester Museum & Science Center receives public support from Monroe County; the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency; and the Natural Heritage Trust, a program of the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Total attendance for Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition of more than 68,000 included guests from 47 states and 21 countries. As a great catalyst for lessons in science, history, geography, English, math, and technology, the exhibition drew more than 2,300 young people in school groups. You may remember that Titanic’s extraordinary popularity prompted us to extend it for an additional week through January 24. This allowed 5,000 more visitors to come and experience the compelling story of the ship. This exhibition’s economic impact extended far beyond the RMSC, benefiting the greater Rochester community. We welcomed 20,000 New York State visitors from outside Monroe County, bringing significant tourism dollars to our city. A 2006 study of the economic impact of arts and cultural organizations in Monroe County concluded that non-resident attendees of cultural events here spend an average of $35.87 per person, excluding the cost of event admission. According to that formula, our Titanic exhibition generated more than $700,000 in tourism revenue for Rochester and Monroe County. Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition gave RMSC’s 2010 budget year a great early boost, and we have continued to build on that success by offering fabulous science and technology experiences that engage and inspire our community. Be the Dinosaur: Life in the Cretaceous, drew record-breaking numbers of visitors during the February school break week with its fun, cutting-edge approach to paleontology. Then our Earth Month activities sparked our region’s imagination. The giant-screen film Mysteries of the Great Lakes opened in April and continues through the summer. It’s a compelling story that includes a look at the project to bring back the fabulous population of lake sturgeon, the largest freshwater fish in the world. Plan to visit BRAIN: The World Inside Your Head, our summer traveling exhibit. It is hands-on in a different way, using innovative special effects, 3-D reproductions, and virtual reality to explore the amazing organ that makes us who we are. We know that adults will enjoy this exhibition as well. We are all curious about our brains. CSI: The Experience will end the year. Visitors will experience hands-on science in an exciting, multi-media environment direct from the CSI TV series. This completely immersive exhibit brings to life real scientific principles and the most advanced techniques used today by crime scene investigators and forensic scientists. We’re having a terrific year, with experiences that offer great fun, important content, and major economic benefit for Rochester and Monroe County.
