Many people who believed in the “science” of phrenology in the 19th century answered “yes” to this question! Phrenology theory proposed that each personality trait is housed in a specific part of the brain. Areas in which a person is strong would protrude, while others would recede. By examining the shape of the head, a phrenologist could determine a person’s underlying behavioral patterns. Model phrenology heads provided maps to guide the interpretation. Two of the most prolific phrenologists were brothers Orson and Lorenzo Fowler from Cohocton, NY. Their sister married Samuel R. Wells, who joined them in a thriving business that expanded to offices in New York City, Philadelphia, Boston and London. Celebrities such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Susan B. Anthony and Clara Barton were among their friends and supporters. Phrenology has been debunked by modern science. Visit BRAIN: The World Inside Your Head to see what advanced research has revealed, and what mysteries remain. The RMSC collection includes these two phrenology heads, sold by Fowler and Wells. See them on display in the Old Rochester Apothecary Exhibit on the museum’s third floor. The RMSC’s Schuyler C. Townson Library holds this 1855 edition of O. S.
