The plague caused tremendous loss <strong>of</strong> revenue, dim<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>the</strong> strength <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> empire<br />

by <strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> money <strong>and</strong> manpower, <strong>and</strong> created enormous disruption <strong>in</strong> trade <strong>and</strong><br />

agriculture lead<strong>in</strong>g to many outbreaks <strong>of</strong> fam<strong>in</strong>e. Fam<strong>in</strong>e also resulted from a severe<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ter 64 <strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong> civil war which raged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> empire for several years, from 602 to<br />

610. 65 Fam<strong>in</strong>e grew even worse from <strong>the</strong> disruption <strong>of</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary plant<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> harvest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terférence with trade due to <strong>the</strong> Persian <strong>in</strong>vasions. The masses <strong>of</strong> people who crowded<br />

<strong>in</strong>to walled cities to escape <strong>in</strong>vaders <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> troops conf<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> cities with<br />

<strong>the</strong>m compounded <strong>the</strong> effect, putt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> food supply under even greater stra<strong>in</strong>. 66<br />

In 602, <strong>the</strong> Emperor Maurice was murdered by a usurper, Phocas, an army <strong>of</strong>ficer<br />

who took <strong>the</strong> throne. The event was a great shock s<strong>in</strong>ce it was <strong>the</strong> fïrst time that <strong>the</strong> throne <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Roman Emperor had been forcibly seized s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> found<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Constant<strong>in</strong>ople. 67 Phocas'<br />

ascent <strong>in</strong>augurated a period <strong>of</strong> horrifie anarchy <strong>and</strong> upheaval, not only <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> capital but <strong>in</strong><br />

cities throughout <strong>the</strong> empire. 69 Phocas was eventually opposed by Heraclius who mustered<br />
