This month we will host Dr. Justin Catandowho
will speak on the advances of Ocular Imaging.
This presentation will inform us on the detection
of Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma and
cataracts. It’s a short and very interesting
presentation.
The goal of this presentation is to inform the aging
population on the importance of early detection
using the newest technology. We will also have
our 50/50 chances and our free $25.00 chance.
Refreshments will be served, so come on out to
the meeting and be informed and refreshed.

We would like to say a huge thanks to
the LeisureTowne Garden Club for the

KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS:
The Burlington County Library
is still accepting knitted and crocheted
7” x 9” blocks for the ongoing
Warm Up Americaprogram. These
blocks are crocheted together into
afghans and lap robes and distributed
to homeless shelters, hospices, and those in need in
Burlington County.
They are also in need of donated skeins of 4 ply
washable yarn for assembly of the blocks. Through your
continued contribution of the blocks, the Library has
been able to distribute hundreds of afghans throughout
the county and is very appreciative of every donation.
Once again, the people of LeisureTowne have
rallied around and donated their time and energy for a
very worthwhile cause. Thank you all. For more

Welcome also to Sylvia Teahan, our new library volunteer.
We are so pleased and grateful that she joined us.
Thanks to Library Volunteer Poala Remeta, for donating
a great bookshelf for Settlers Hall Library. It’s now
being used for large print books. Thanks also to the
maintenance guys for moving it to Settlers, and also to
Kathy, the Maintenance “gal,” for her great ideas and
help.
For the present, we are not accepting donations of
video cassettes because we have simply run out
of space for them. We would like to remind those of
you who borrow video and audio tapes to rewind them
before you return them.
Please remember that you should phone Jacie or
Anna if you wish to donate more than a dozen books.
We will be happy to discuss your donation. All donated
books should be newer and in good condition.

Urshula Kilburn, reports that the
donation went a long way towards
meeting last month’s expenses.
Doris Knittle wants to assure
residents that transports will continue to be provided on all
days between the hours of 9:30 – 2:30 as long as volunteers
are available. We are in dire need of additional drivers, so if
you have some free time she’d like to hear from you.
You will see on another page of this month’s issue the details of
our annual Flu Shot Clinic to be held on Thursday, October 3rd
at Laurel Hall. Please mark your calendars for this important
event.

Library In A Bag
1. What is Library in a Bag?
Library in a Bagis the Burlington County Library System’s
free home delivery of requested material. It is a
new service funded by the Burlington County Library
System, the South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative
and the New Jersey State Library.
2. Who is eligible to receive home delivery?
You are eligible to receive Library in a Bagservices if
you reside in Burlington County and have a library
card in good standing from Burlington County.
3. What items are available to be mailed?
Any item from our collection that can be requested for
pickup can also be delivered to you by mail. Only reference
materials, browsing collection items, and interlibrary
loans are not available to be mailed.
4. How do I order items for delivery?
Customers may request material from the online catalog.
After placing a request, you will be asked to choose a
pick-up location. Choose MAIL if you want items
delivered. Requests can also be made in person at
any BCLS location, by phone 609-267-9660, ext.
3014 or email liminbag@bcls.lib.nj.us.
5. How are items delivered?
The United States Postal Service will deliver requested
material to customers’ homes. Look for our turquoise
zippered nylon bag or Library in a Bag logo on other
mailing containers.
6. How long does it take to receive the item?
When the item is available, it will be mailed as soon
as it can be checked out to you and packaged for
mailing. Because this is a brand new service, it will
be a learning experience for all concerned. If your
need for library material is immediate, the quickest
way is to pick it up.
7. How do I return delivered items?
The easiest, least expensive method of return is to
drop off the package at any of the 19 BCLS libraries,
the Bookmobile, or use any of the library book drops,
available 24x7. If you mail the items back to County
Library, return postage is the borrower’s responsibility.
A return mailing label will be provided in each Library
in a Bagshipment.
8. Can I renew items that have been delivered to
my home?
Yes, the same renewal policy applies to mailed materials
as to those that are picked up. If items are not
on reserve or overdue, they may be renewed on line,
in person or by telephone.
9. How do I handle the packaging of delivered
items?
The teal, nylon bags should be returned with the
delivered items, as they are checked out to borrowers
along with the library material. Customers are
encouraged to recycle paper or cardboard packaging.

AT THE HAMPTON
LAKES FIRE HOUSE
October 6th through the 12th is Fire Prevention Week.
We will be having an Open House for fire prevention on
Wednesday Oct. 9 at the Hampton Lakes fire house
(72 Holly Blvd. in Hampton Lakes) from 7-9 p.m. This
year we will be hosting a fire prevention poster contest
for the 6th, 7th and 8th graders from Southampton
township school. The theme this year is: Prevent
Kitchen Fires. The winners will be announced that night
at 8 p.m. Please join us to show some support for our
young people. We will hand out many safety
brochures, run a couple of demonstrations and there
will be refreshments and door prizes. This is a good
time to get to know the emergency people who protect
you and your family. This is for all ages. Please join
us.
SPAGHETTI DINNER –ALL YOU CAN EAT!

We have an Explorers Post for kids from 14 thru 20.
This is also part of the Boy Scouts of America. We
have had several young people in our program with
great results. They learn what it is to be an emergency
responder and are prepared for going to fire school to
become a N.J. certified Fire Fighter. Some also
become EMT’s. This year we are proud to announce
2 of our older Explorers, Ryan Gerber and Nikki Rink
have completed the Fire Fighter One course at the
Burlington County Fire Academy and passed the state
test. We are so proud of them. This gives us 7 young
people who have stayed with the program and are now
Certified Fire Fighters and 3 of them are also EMT’s.
This past spring we had 6 new young people join our
program. You will see them at different events and
they love helping with our smoke detector program.

Smoke Detectors and Gas Detectors Saves Lives
We at Hampton Lakes Volunteer Fire Company have
a program for replacing batteries and new smoke
detectors, (when needed), in your home free of charge,
to the residents of Southampton. One of our growing
concerns is we receive calls that the smoke detectors
go off, especially in the middle of the night, and people
wait to call our number in the morning. There are
many reasons they may go off. To be safe, please let
us check for the reason it is going off. Some dangers
cannot be seen or smelled. Please call 911 if your
detectors go off no matter what time it is! We have
made a commitment to protect our neighbors and the
time does not matter to us. That is what we are here
for. There are many detectors in your homes coming
up on 10 years old or older. These need replacing!
Anyone who needs smoke detectors or needs batteries
changed in their existing detectors; please
call us at 859-2600. We will come out at no cost to
you; remember to check ID’s. If not an emergency,
please be patient and we will respond to your
request as quickly as possible.

SOUTHAMPTON CHAPTER
Many people find it difficult to understand there is a local hospital
facility that never bills any of its patients. For over 30 years,
the Southampton Chapter has been raising money for Deborah
Heart and Lung Hospital in Browns Mills, New Jersey, so
that families who do not have sufficient insurance will not
receive a bill from the hospital. There is never a co-pay for
Deborah services.
Our next fundraisers are Bingo in October and the Cadillac
car raffle in November. Our next monthly meeting will be
Thursday September 19 at Settlers Hall. If you’d like to join
our group (a great bunch of residents), please call our membershipchairperson,
Gloria Reagoso at 859-2215. At this meeting,
in addition to bringing everyone up to date after the summer
hiatus, we will be entertained by one of LeisureTowne’s most
talented singers. Besides the usual coffee and delicious
cakes, our president will be awarding a gift certificate for dinner
at L.B. Danielsin Medford. You don’t want to miss this meeting.
Tickets for the October Bingo will be available at the meeting.

With security so important today in order to travel
in the United States as well as dealing with
stores, banks and any other service providers,
photo ID’s are a necessary way of life everywhere
we go.
The Sheriff’s Department will provide a color
photo ID card to seniors with proper identification,
that may be used as a secondary means of
photo ID in conjunction with a regular state or
federal photo ID card. Additionally, important
information such as “Emergency Contact:,
“Allergies & Illnesses”, “Living Will” and “Organ
Donor” information along with the cardholder’s
descriptive identifiers are contained on the back
of this card.
Most commonly accepted primary photo ID
cards are U.S. Passport, state driver’s licenses,
government employee & military ID cards.
If a senior does not have a New Jersey driver’s
license, they may also obtain a New Jersey
Non-Driver Identification Card at any NJ Motor
Vehicle Commission office. Information on
obtaining a Non-Driver ID Card may be obtained
online by going to the following website:

In order to obtain a New Jersey Non-Driver ID
Card, the applicant must provide 6 points of
identification. This information is outlined by

Seniors may get their free ID cards in either of
the following ways:

from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (by appointment).

•County Corner at the Moorestown Mall –
Senior ID cards will be available the last
Wednesday of each month, from 10:00 a.m. to
12:00 p.m. The County Corner is located along
the Route 38 (front) of the mall, to the left side of

NOSTALGIA
Many books are written promising easy and effective
ways of improving your memory. Well, don’t waste your
time and money on such useless things. Instead, you
may find that the best way to vastly improve your memory
is to just grow older. Growing old not only improves
your memory, but it also does a wonderful job of editing
your recollections.
Does this sound strange? Let me explain. It seems
that the longer you live, the more there is to recall.
Can’t argue with that, can you? And along with that
increase in things remembered, the clearer and more
detailed your memory becomes. Especially so are
those recollections of the many good people you’ve
encountered over the years. They now seem almost
magically faultless. Not to mention recollections of
events and occasions long past that were sweet and
beautiful. Sometimes you can replay, with an almost
continuous movie stream memory, the tiniest details of
some of the good things that happened to you on your
way to this point in time.
I once told this to an older friend. He said this about
such memories: “Don’t fool yourself, kid. What you
choose to remember has been cleaned, pressed, and
polished by your memory into what you would like them
to be.”
He was probably right; for when I try to recall the details
of those times when things were not so good, they
become less clear and more indistinct. I have never
lain on the couch of a psychiatrist, but I suggest that if I
ever did so, the good doctor might say this of my
Pollyannaish attitude, “That’s not all that bad.”

A recent Standard Life Study claims such positive nostalgia
is “good psychological medicine,” and that
“remembering things past improved mood, increased
self-esteem and strengthened social bonds.” The study
also said “the benefits of nostalgia are long lasting and
not for a few moments.”
So it appears that our memory and the nostalgia we feel
for places or people in our past combine to put a beneficent,
rosy glow over the recollections we cherish. But
it’s also good to remember what Will Rogers once said,
“Things ain’t what they used to be and probably never
was.”

IDENTITY THEFT
Victimʼs Reference Guide
What is identity theft?
Identity theft is a serious problem affecting millions of
people each year. It involves acquiring key pieces of
someone’s identifying information, such as name,
address, date of birth, social security number and
mother’s maiden name, in order to impersonate them.
This information enables the identity thief to commit
numerous forms of fraud which include, but are not limited
to, taking over the victim’s financial accounts,
opening new bank accounts, purchasing automobiles,
applying for loans, credit cards and social security benefits,
renting apartments, and establishing services with
utility and phone companies.
How does identity theft occur?
Offenders who commit identity theft may or may not be
known to the victim. There are many ways the offender
may obtain your personal information or information
related to your personal financial accounts. Information
can be obtained from trash bins or at places where you
conduct your personal business. It can be obtained
from identity thieves who work at banks, mortgage
firms, social or credit agencies, city-state-federal agencies,
auto dealerships, collection agencies, utility service
providers, telemarketers, doctor’s offices, merchants
and other businesses that have access to your
personal information or credit card information. Identity
thieves also contact victims via telephone and e-mail
requesting personal information. Information can also
be obtained from obituaries and taken out of residential
garbage cans, mailboxes and mail facilities. The information
obtained from these sources is used to assume
a false identity.
Preventing Identity Theft
The Doʼs and Donʼts for preventing identity theft.
DO:
• Order a copy of your credit report every year from
all three of the major credit reporting agencies in order
to check for fraudulent activity or discrepancies. In the
State of New Jersey, you can obtain one free report
each year from each of the credit reporting agencies.
• Protect your mail by removing it from your mailbox
as soon as possible. Consider using a locked mailbox.
• Shred any discarded paperwork that contains personal
identifiers or financial information, including preapproved
credit card and loan applications. If a vendor
uses carbon copies for credit card bills, ask for and
destroy the carbons.
• Stop pre-approved credit offers by calling the Credit
Reporting Industry at 1-888-567-8688.
• Know where your personal information is kept, who
has access to it, and who you may have provided it to
in the past. Protect your wallet and purse and never
leave them unattended. Keep an eye on your credit
card when using it to pay for purchases.
• Be aware of your surroundings when using ATM
cards, making credit card purchases, using telephone
credit card numbers and utilizing pin numbers or passwords.
• Carefully review your bills, bank statements, credit
card statements and other financial accounts, to ensure
that all balances and receipts match and no activity is
unaccounted for.

• If you use a computer, install virus protection and firewall
software to discourage hackers. Be aware of
personal information that you send over the internet
that could be viewed by others.
• Destroy computers, hard drives, zip-drives, floppy
disks, compact disks, or any other electronic device
which may contain personal information before disposing
of them.
• Request your financial institutions to add security to
your accounts, such as a special password.
DON’T:
• Do not give out personal identifiers or financial identifiers
in response to unsolicited offers by mail, phone,
internet, and/or in person. Identity thieves frequently
pose as legitimate business people, charity workers, or
law enforcement to gain your trust.
• Do not fill out personal information on warranty cards
and sweepstakes entries; it is often sold to others as a
marketing tool.
• Do not provide or use your social security number
unless you have to.
• Do not provide personal identifiers, account numbers
or other personal information unless you know the
information will be secure.
Following these steps will reduce your risk of being a
victim of an identity theft. Your goal should be to

What do I do if I become a victim of identity theft?
Credit Bureaus:
• Immediately call the fraud units of the three credit
reporting companies – Equifax, Experian and Trans
Union. Report the theft of your credit or identity to
them. Ask that your account be flagged and have a
“Fraud Alert/Victim Impact” statement placed on your
credit file, asking that creditors call you before granting
credit. Obtain the names and phone numbers of businesses
with whom fraudulent accounts have been
opened.

Creditors:
• Contact your creditors and those who provided
credit fraudulently, by phone and in writing to inform
them of the problem. Ask for replacement cards,
close old or fraudulent accounts, obtain new account
numbers and pin number if the accounts have been
used fraudulently.
Law Enforcement:
• Contact your local police department, file a report
and obtain a case number. Most credit and financial
institutions will require that you make a police report.
Stolen Checks:
• If you have checks stolen or accounts set up
fraudulently, report it to the bank and close the
accounts. Set up new accounts and put stop payments
on the outstanding fraudulent checks.
ATM Cards:
• If your ATM card is stolen or compromised, get a
new card, account number and password.
Social Security Number:
• If your Social Security number has been used
fraudulently, contact the Social Security Administration
at 1-800-269-0271, or through their website
www.ssa.gov/oig.
Drivers License Fraud:
• If you suspect that your drivers license or registration
was lost, stolen or fraudulently used contact the
New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles. You will have
to appear in person at a regional office and fill out a
fraud affidavit. You must bring forms of identification
and all proof to show fraudulent activity.

DMV at 1-609-292-6500 or visiting their website
www.state.nj.us/mvc.
Passport Fraud:
• Protect yourself from passport fraud. Contact the
U.S. State Department at their website
www.travel.state.gov and alert them that you were
the victim of identity theft. Request that they alert
you if anyone attempts to use your identity to acquire
a passport.
False Civil and Criminal Judgments:
• Contact the Court where the judgment was
entered and report that you are the victim of identity
theft.
Personal Property Security:
• If your suspect that your identity was compromised
by someone who had access to your residence,
change the locks to your residence and vehicles if
necessary.
Utility Companies:
• Contact your local utility companies to see if there
is any unusual activity on your accounts.
VETERAN ID CARDS
The Burlington County Veteran Services and Sheriff’s
Department have partnered to provide Burlington
County Veterans with a free Veteran Photo ID Card.
These cards identify veterans who served in our
armed forces, and received an honorable discharge
following their military service. These cards give veterans
the ability to receive discounts or benefits
offered by stores and restaurants. Many establishments
offer 10% or more in discounts to our vets, who have
had to carry their DD214 discharge document to prove
their military status.
The cards are not valid to conduct official business or
to secure veterans benefits. Military retirees and
those veterans holding VA Health Care Cards can use
these cards as proof of veteran status, and do not
require the Veteran ID card.
Recently four dates in September were offered to
veterans to come to the Human Services Building in
Westampton, where Veteran Services is located.
Over 650 veterans took advantage of this service, held
between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to get their free ID cards.
Additional dates were also held at the County Administration
building the week of October 4th.
Veterans may continue to get their free ID cards in
either of the following ways:
• County Corner at the Moorestown Mall –Veteran
ID cards will be available the last Wednesday of each
month, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The County Corner
is located along the Route 38 (front) of the mall, to the
left side of Sears. Their telephone number is 856-642-
3833. (Please also note that Senior ID Cards are
made during this time period for Seniors over age 60).
• Sheriff’s Department,Community Services Unit, 49
Rancocas Road, County Administration Building, 2nd
Floor, Room 223, Mount Holly, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
(by appointment). Please call 609-265-5785 to schedule
an appointment.
Requirements:
1.Military DDs14 discharge document showing an
“honorary discharge”.
2.Photo ID such as a New Jersey photo driver’s
license.
Any name changes made since the issuance of the
DD214 must have documentation.

Registering this form affords the veteran the security
of knowing that his/her records are permanently

By Law Changes: The following paragraph, dealing
with what constitutes authorization for non members to
play in our tournaments, was read and approved by
members at the monthly meetings as required by the
by laws. Here are the changes: The new non member
is categorized as “guest” The requirements are:
Guest may attend any function of the Red Lion Golf
Association (RLGA) providing they are invited and pay
any fees assessed for the function(s). A guest who
becomes eligible to be a member may do so providing
they are a resident of LeisureTowne Association. A
guest does not have voting privileges nor can one
serve as an officer of the RLGA. NOTE: Golf Guests

filled with trash and garbage they stopped by the side

“Why are you dumping garbage on the side of the
road? Don’t you see that sign in front of you?” “Yep”

The Garden Club will meet on the second Tuesday,
September 10, 2013 at 7:00 p.m., in Friendship Hall.
If you like gardening, please come out and join us. A
couple months back our club visited “A Gloria’s Garden
Retreat” in Southampton. We had a great time, and
her property was packed full of beautiful trees, plants
and flowers, as well as a gift shop. Well now Gloria is
coming to visit us, and her lecture will be “Bringing
Wildlife into Your Garden”. This includes birds, beneficial
insects, butterflies, hummingbirds and others. So it
will be an interesting meeting. Refreshments will be

Hope everyone is keeping cool. As I write this, it is
almost 100 degrees. But then, it’s mid-July.
Sadly, I must inform you that our dear secretary,
Eleanor Haines, passed away. For a dozen years,
Eleanor’s face was the first one you saw when you came
in the door. She typed up the Members’ Lists and carefully
checked off our names as she greeted us. The
History Club sent her a beautiful vase of multi-colored
roses, and the last time I saw her, she asked me to thank
everyone.
We are hoping that someone will step up and offer to
take over the job that Eleanor did for so many years. If
you are able to help, please call me at 609-388-4288.
This month, we are excited to welcome back Dr. David
Martin, an expert on the Civil War. Since July 1-2-3
marked the 150th anniversary of the Battle at Gettysburg,
Dr. Martin will tell us the part that new Jersey played in
this most significant battle of the Civil War. You probably
know that most people consider this battle to be the
most important of the war. But did you know that New
Jersey contributed over 4,000 troops to the great Union
victory, and that we suffered over 600 casualties?
The story of New Jersey’s troops at Gettysburg is not
well known, largely because we had no flashy generals
there and none of our troops did deeds as famous as the
20th Maine or the Irish Brigade. New Jersey troops nevertheless
contributed significantly to the battle, particularly
at such well known locations as the Peach Orchard,
Wheatfield, Devil’s Den, and defeating Pickett’s Charge.
Our guest speaker, Dr. David Martin, has written
extensively on Gettysburg, and his most recent book is
entitled “New Jersey at Gettysburg Guidebook.” He will
summarize the deeds of our soldiers from Jersey at the
battle, including accounts of individual heroism and brave
leadership. He has also made a special study of the battle
flags that the troops carried into action, some of which
are exhibited at the New Jersey State Museum, and he
will share rousing stories of the flags in action. The lecture
is illustrated. You will not want to miss this one.
Dr. Martin is a member of the board of trustees of the
Friends of Monmouth Battlefield and the New Jersey Civil
War Heritage Association. He is also a member of the
Company of Military Historians as well as President of
the Princeton-Cranbury Chapter of the Sons of the
American Revolution. His credits include Past
Commander of the New Jersey Department, Sons of
Union Veterans of the Civil War, and Adjutant of
Company A, 1st New Jersey Battalion, Sons of Veterans
Reserve.
In October, we’ll learn more about the times and the
popular people of the “The Greatest Generation.” We’ll
begin in the year of 1920 and travel along until the
1950s, giving up some of the secrets of George H. W.
Bush, Julia Child, Dwight Eisenhower, Andy Rooney,
Eleanor Roosevelt, John Glenn, Ben Bradley, Bob Hope
and John Wayne.
In November, we’ve invited Jane Peters Estes to
speak to us about “Christmas Past.” Remember how
she amused us with her depiction of “Grave Matters?”
And in December, we’ll sing along through 1946 and
1956 with the delightful Fred Miller and his “Music,
Music, Music.”

We hope you all had a happy, healthy summer.
Everything starts up again full force and that includes
our monthly meetings with entertainment and
refreshments. On the third Monday of each month
in Laurel Hall we will be so happy to see you join
us and have some laughs. Maybe you’ll decide to
become a member for just $5.00 a year.
This month we’ll have a little fun with something
from the Writers’ Workshop group. They meet the
2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month in the little
room in Laurel Hall. If you have any ideas or humorous
personal experiences you would like to share,
come in and see how they can become a skit or even
a play.
We are now rehearsing for our annual play in
November entitled, “County Five Star Club”. If you are
interested in becoming a cast member or part of the
crew, don’t despair, there is still time. We need you
and your special talents in any area of stage production.

and you can speak to him at our meetings or give him

50’s Club
We start meeting again on September 19th, the
third Thursday of each month. We meet in Friendship
Hall at 1 p.m. This is a social club and there
are no dues, but there might be a time we may ask
for a donation for something special. The purpose
of this club is to have people get together and make
new friends or renew old ones. We listen to all the
oldies from 1950’s maybe we will throw in 40’s or
60’s to surprise you. We have fond memories from
those days gone by and we hope you would like to
share them with us. This year we will have speakers
on knowledge topics but not every month. We
celebrate all the holidays with our special luncheons
which we share each month. Please come and
share your wonderful stories of the summer gone

Old Cowboy Shave
An old cowboy walks into the barbershop for a shave
and a haircut and he tells the barber he can’t get all his
whiskers off because his cheeks are wrinkled from age.
The barber gets a little wooden ball from a cup on the
shelf and tells the old cowboy to put it inside his cheek to
spread out the skin.
When he’s finished, the old cowboy tells the barber that
was the cleanest shave he’s had in years. But he wanted
to know what would have happened if he had swallowed
that little ball.
The barber replied, ”Just bring it back in a couple of days
like everyone else does”.
Old Farmer
An elderly man in Louisiana had owned a large farm for
several years. He had a large pond in the back. It was
properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with
picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and
peach trees.
One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the
pond, as he hadn’t been there for a while, and look it over.
He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.
As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and
laughing with glee.
As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young
women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women
aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.
One of the women shouted to him, ‘we’re not coming out

until you leave!’ The old man frowned, “I didn’t come down here to watch
you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked.’
Holding the bucket up he said, ‘I’m here to feed the alligator …” Some old
men can still think fast.
Remember our Armed Forces men and women who are serving bravely
and giving their lives throughout the world so we may enjoy the freedom
we have.

How Labor Day Began
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated
on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New
York City, planned by the Central Labor
Union.
In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday,
and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other
cities to follow the example of New York and hold a “workingmen’s
holiday.”
The idea spread, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many
industrial centers of the country. In 1894, Congress passed an act
making the first Monday in September of each year a federal holiday.
Labor Day was to be observed with a street parade to exhibit to the
public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor
organizations”of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation
and amusement of the workers and their families.
