Measuring success With the help of innovative methods, Dachser is making the value and profit maximizing power of logistics services fully measurable. The principal focus is on customer benefit. h “If it weren’t for our customers, we wouldn’t be here!” Sometimes the truths on which corporate activity is based are very simple. For Bernhard Simon, head of the Dachser management board, the central question remains: “What can we do to ensure satisfied customers who keep coming back to us?” Answers, he believes, have to be provided by the whole enterprise – at all times and across all levels of the hierarchy. This approach was already embraced by US economist Peter F. Drucker, who died in 2005. His credo of modern management practice was: “There is only one valid definition of a business purpose: to create a satisfied customer.” Dachser has formulated this objective in its mission statement: “We create the world’s most intelligent combination and integration of logistical network services. We optimize the logistics balance sheet of our customers.” For the logistics provider this means continually considering the customer’s needs and seeking feasible ways forward together. “We must meet the constantly changing demands Bernhard Simon is head of the Dachser management board COVER STORY of the market flexibly and dynamically,” Bernhard Simon stresses. “At Dachser, customer orientation therefore means looking outwards and listening carefully to our customers.” A logistics provider, he believes, must be prepared to leverage its know-how and innovative concepts not only to reach the market, but also, wherever possible, to help shape it. “Those who are in it for their own personal gain are likely to be the losers at the end of the day,” Simon says. Corporate profitability is measured in terms of returns – and this goes for the customer as well as the provider. For Dachser this means: “We optimize the logistics balance sheet of our customers and hence their satisfaction. This creates the basis for corresponding returns – on the customer side as well as for the service provider”.
