Donald Wellis -
Shell People Awards
Trainee of the Year
InfraTrain trainee Donald Wellis
has been named as one of the winners
of the prestigious New Zealand
Contractors Federation (NZCF Shell
People Awards 2008.
Donald, 25, who works for McKenzie
Parma in South Auckland, impressed
the judges with his outstanding training
achievements. Following a tough
judging process which included a written
application and interviews with an expert
judging panel, he was awarded Trainee of
the Year, together with a $3,000 prize.
Donald was first attracted to the industry
because he wanted to drive large
machinery, but his interests have grown
from there. He now holds National
Certificates in Civil Construction Works
(Introductory Skills), Civil Plant Operation
(Skilled) and Civil Construction Works
(Infrastructure Pipelaying).
This isn’t the first time Donald has
been recognised for his commitment to
training - he was also nominated by his
previous employer, and picked as runner
up for the same award in 2006.
Donald said “I’m really pleased to have
won the award because I think it will
help me to progress in my career. My
immediate ambition would be to become
a site foreman, and maybe one day
a manager.”
Donald feels that getting qualified
is the only way to go. He explains,
“Most employers want you to have the
qualifications - it’s no longer enough just
to say you have experience and are able
to do something.”
Donald Wellis with his award
He also commented on how much he
enjoyed doing the qualifications, and
how they have helped him do his job
more effectively. Donald is grateful to
everyone who has given him guidance,
especially his mentor Rako, who was
really supportive.
The other Shell People Awards winner
was Felicity Glenie, 26, who is also from
Auckland, and works as a section engineer
for Fletcher Construction Engineering.
Felicity won the inaugural Leader of
Tomorrow title.
The Shell People Awards have been
developed by NZCF and Shell (NZ) with
the support of InfraTrain, to recognise
individuals who have made an outstanding
contribution to the Civil
Construction Industry.
Congratulations Donald from all of us
at InfraTrain!
Roading Excellence Awards 2008
On the road to success …
Some of the most outstanding
roading projects in New Zealand were
honoured at the Roading Excellence
Awards 2008, held by Roading
New Zealand in Wellington recently.
Key people from the industry, including
Transport Minister Annette King,
gathered at the Duxton Hotel, Wellington,
on 25 August, to celebrate industry
achievements, and to recognise the most
innovative projects from around
the country.
InfraTrain was proud to act as principal
sponsor of the event. Chief Executive
John Wills said, “We were delighted
to support the Roading Excellence
Awards again this year. We were greatly
encouraged by the outstanding efforts
that many companies have made in the
areas of leadership, training
and sustainability.”
This year saw a record number of 30
entries to the awards, and 16 projects
from throughout New Zealand were
selected as finalists. These projects
involved 24 different companies, local
authorities, alliances, and organisations,
representing the diverse and collaborative
nature of the roading industry.
InfraTrain sponsored Industry Best
Practice Awards in three categories.
These awards recognise outstanding
achievements in the implementation of
projects that promote best practice and
raise industry standards.
The ‘People’ category was awarded to
Downer EDI Works, for their TeamWorks
strategy. InfraTrain worked in
collaboration with Downer EDI to deliver
training that ensures that their people
have the foundation skills, leadership and
communications skills in the frontline.
As a result of the strategy, over 400 staff
gained the InfraTrain National Certificate
in Infrastructure—General Introductory
Downer EDI Works – winner of the InfraTrain New Zealand Industry Best Practice Award - People
From left to right: Jenny Thornton (Department of Labour), Lindsay Crossen (Roading NZ/Fulton Hogan),
Cos Bruyn (Downer EDI Works), Transport Minister Annette King, Phil Muir (Downer EDI Works),
John Wills (InfraTrain), Greg McBain (Downer EDI Works)
Skills (Level 2), and qualified for the
Operate Safe Bronze Card.
The ‘Procurement’ category was won
by Bloxham Burnett and Olliver Ltd,
for their work on the SH20 Manukau
Harbour Crossing, and the ‘Environmental
Sustainability’ category was won by
Northern Gateway Alliance for their
SH1 Northern Motorway Extension project.
Other awards on the night included
Gough’s Excellence Award for a Minor
Road Project, the Shell Bitumen Award for
a Major Road Project. Winners from each
category then went head to head for the
Roading New Zealand Supreme Award,
which went to the Northern Busway
Project in Auckland.
Annette King, who presented the awards,
said “The awards promote excellence,
leadership and best practice in the
provision of land transport infrastructure,
and have showcased just what the industry
can do. The winners, as well as the
entrants, can be justifiably proud of what
they have achieved.”
Have you seen Just
the Job?
Just the Job is a popular TV series
that gives secondary school students
a chance to find out about different
career paths. Students spend a day
working in an industry and gain first
hand experience of on-job training.
InfraTrain has been working with Just
the Job to raise awareness of career
options and qualifications in the
Infrastructure industry. Series one and
two saw students spending the day
with Downer EDI Works, Fulton Hogan,
Isaac Construction and Tanlaw.
We have each episode on DVD to
First graduates
National Diploma in Infrastructure Asset Management
InfraTrain is pleased to announce
the first graduates of the National
Diploma in Infrastructure
Asset Management.
Congratulations to Ross Waugh, of
Waugh Infrastructure Management,
Timaru, and Jim Muir of Opus
International Consultants, Pukekohe.
Ross was presented with his certificate
at the National Asset Management
Steering Group (NAMS) Forum, which
was held in Wellington on 19 August.
Unfortunately Jim was overseas and
missed the presentation, but we
caught up with Ross to talk about his
achievement.
“I’m really happy to have completed the
Diploma.” said Ross. “It’s a worthwhile
qualification, and in the future it will
become a prerequisite for writing asset
management plans in New Zealand. I
also trained to become an Assessor for
the qualification at the same. It’s great
to be actively involved in raising industry
standards — it’s something I’m
passionate about.”
The graduation not only marks a great
personal achievement for Ross and Jim
— it highlights the successful partnership
between InfraTrain and NAMS Group, who
worked together to develop this
new, world—class qualification.
The National Diploma of Infrastructure
Asset Management was introduced earlier
this year, and was developed to meet
industry needs. It is now viewed by NAMS
Group as the benchmark of competency
for asset managers. Management of
infrastructure assets is a fairly new area,
but New Zealand leads the world in the
development of best practice. InfraTrain is
very proud to be part of this success.
Modern Apprentices - Matthew
Davis of Fulton Hogan, Dunedin,
and Joshua Vekula of Downer EDI
Works, Wellington.
Matthew and Joshua will take part
in a 21 day Outward Bound course
at Anakiwa in the Marlborough
Sounds at the end of August.
The aim of the Scholarship is to
develop leadership skills and to
provide Modern Apprentices with
a shared experience with people
from other trades.
We’ll be catching up with
Matthew and Joshua when they
return. See our December issue.
Engineering (Applied).
Anthony Price of Hauraki District Council,
Don McKenzie of Traffic Design Group,
Tauranga, and Paul Howard of Downer
EDI Works Ltd, Timaru, have all recently
completed the qualification.
The Diploma was developed through a
partnership between InfraTrain and IPENZ
in response to industry demand for a
technician level qualification. It recognises
practical skills and provides a replacement
for the former New Zealand Certificate of
Engineering (Civil).
What is the New Zealand Skills Strategy?
Did you know that 80% of the current
work force will still be working in 2020?
There has been growing concern that
New Zealand’s productivity is lagging
behind other countries and that to
ensure economic growth in the future
we need to improve the skills and value
of the current workforce.
The New Zealand Skills Strategy was
launched in August 2008 in response
to these concerns. It brings together
Government Ministers, Business
New Zealand, the New Zealand Council
of Trade Unions, and the Industry
Training Federation in a partnership to
increase workforce skills.
The key priority for 2008 is to improve
literacy and numeracy, and the
Government has committed $168
million for this purpose alone. Other
priorities are to improve management and
leadership in organisations, and to match
skills with industry needs.
The Strategy recognises that the
formal education and training system
has a central role in raising workforce
performance. It also recognises the role
of Industry Training Organisations (ITOs)
such as InfraTrain in ensuring industry
skill needs are reflected in education and
training appropriate to the industry. In
making the links between the role of ITOs,
workplace training and productivity, the
Strategy is a significant step forward for
New Zealand.
Dr Claire Cohen, Business Development
Manager at InfraTrain says, “InfraTrain has
embraced the ‘leadership role’ through
extensive consultations and reviews with
industry and its key decision makers to
develop learning resources that
help trainees complete their on-job
training successfully.”
“The establishment of the Strategic
Advisory Committee —a forum at which
civil infrastructure industry leaders
advise InfraTrain on the development
of industry training—is a recent
example of the way that InfraTrain
has consistently sought to work with
the civil infrastructure industry to
develop training solutions to
enhance productivity.”
Dr Cohen also noted that InfraTrain has
been lobbying Ministers and MPs, and
added “A crucial question is whether the
Government’s new emphasis upon
the role of ITOs will be supported by
extra funding.”
