The apprentices’
Two Fulton Hogan employees from
Nelson have just completed their
Modern Apprenticeships.
Kane Hart and Stuart Tunnicliff have both
completed Modern Apprenticeships in
Civil Plant Operation. The apprenticeship
consisted of National Certificates in Civil
Plant Operation, Civil Construction
Introductory Skills and Civil Road
Construction.
Paul Lewis, Fulton Hogan Training Manager,
says it has benefited both them and the
company. “Kane and Stuart have worked
diligently through their national certificate
books. They have grown as people, and
as valuable employees.”
Completing the apprenticeship has been
a challenging and rewarding experience
says Kane. “It can be difficult to get
your head around things when you’ve
just come home from work. But it’s been
good and I want to keep learning.”
Kane’s first job was completing
maintenance work at Nelson Hospital,
including grounds-keeping and asphalt
laying. Since then he has moved around
departments at Fulton Hogan. “I’ve
really enjoyed it, its good physical work,”
says Kane. “Internal training and on-job
experience have taught me heaps. I’ve
worked under five or six foremen, all
are really intelligent and know about
the job. They’ll teach you bits and pieces,
and you learn a lot as you go.” Kane’s
ambition is to be the man others turn to
for answers. “Eventually I’ll settle down,
become a foreman on the roads and
run my own construction crew,” he says.
Stuart started as one of the boys in the
crew and has now graduated to driving
a seven tonne excavator. “The benefit
of training is to get qualified,” says
Stuart. “I wasn’t that motivated at
school but now it’s different. Because
I’m interested in what I’m doing, it makes
training so much easier.”

Kane Hart wants to keep learning
As well as finishing his apprenticeship,
Stuart can also add another two national
certificates to his total.
Like Kane, Stuart also has ambitions to
continue up the ladder. “I’d like to keep
training. Hopefully one day I will be
a supervisor of a road or plant crew.”
Throughout their apprenticeships, both
Kane and Stuart have valued
the support they received from their
employer, Fulton Hogan.
InfraTrain Regional Manager, Dave
Giddens, has been impressed with the
guys attitude to training. “Training was
a challenge for both Kane and Stuart
but now they have their reward, their
apprenticeships. I believe both of
them will have promising futures in
the civil construction industry.”

New people in new places
InfraTrain has opened two new
regional offices, one in Hastings and
one in Palmerston North.
Bruce Craft has been appointed the
new Training Advisor for Hastings.
Bruce has 29 years of experience
in the civil engineering industry,
both with local authorities and
civil contractors. He has held senior
positions as a Roading Engineer
Contracts Manager, Health and Safety
Officer and Training Co-ordinator. His
most recent position was with
Walmsley Contracting in Hastings.
He was an approved InfraTrain
assessor and verifier and has a
good understanding of the NZQA
framework.
The new Hastings office address is
211 Market Street South, Hastings. Bruce

survey
Yes, it’s that time of year again, when
you get to tell us how we’re doing.
During June, InfraTrain will be
sending customer satisfaction
survey’s to all company’s who
have had registered trainees over
the last six months. Trainee surveys
will be sent later in the year.
Everyone who returns the survey
will go in the draw to win a fabulous
prize - a mystery trip for two in
New Zealand.

Tanya Peters has recently
joined Kathy Williams as the
new Training Advisor in
Palmerston North. Previously,
Tanya set up the Tauranga
office which she ran very
successfully for 12 months.
The new Palmerston North

Karen Carter is the new Training Advisor
in Tauranga. Karen comes to InfraTrain
from NZQA where she worked as a
moderator as well as a Gateway
Programme Workplace Co-ordinator
in Tauranga. She has previously worked
for NZQA as a National Assessment
and Moderation Facilitator based in

while learning?
The ANZ bank have launched a new
banking package available to those
aged 18-24 who are earning while
learning.
The package offers up to $250 worth
of free offers and discounts if you
open an ANZ everyday account and
sign up for two or more other ANZ
products.
The current rewards include food,
clothing, internet, power and hardware
vouchers. Every three months
customers receive reward vouchers
by mail within your chosen category:
Work, Home or Play.
To qualify for the package you must:

ANZ are the first bank to launch a
product that recognises young trainees
who are earning and learning.
InfraTrain trainees who are enrolled
into national certificates and national
diplomas can use their training
agreements as proof that they
are enrolled in to an NZQA registered
course.

With three full time staff recently
awarded the National Certificate
in Agricultural Contracting Level 4 -
all of Truebridge Contracting
agricultural technicians are
qualified.
“We wanted to up-skill the guys”, said
Stu Taylor the Operations Manager.
“Formal qualifications are important
these days and the certificates give
the staff something to keep. By
enrolling the guys in training, they
had goals and it’s good for them to
have something to work towards.”
“When you’ve got staff using quarter
a million dollars worth of machinery,
if you train them they will drive that
machine safety and carefully.”
Stu enrolled into the qualification
with the others but his added
experience meant he finished quicker
than they did. “Working through the
qualification at the same time, meant
I could be a mentor and help the
others with any questions they had.”
As well as Stu being on call for
questions, monthly meetings were
held during the training to discuss
any issues that the guys had.

Truebridge Contracting will always look to train staff
“The biggest benefit of training is
that you are up-skilling your staff,”
says Stu.
“Training keeps the mind active and
open to new ideas and helps
steer staff in the right direction. For
these reasons the company will
always look to train staff.”

guys put in. “It’s not easy when you’ve
been working all day to come home
and get your workbooks out. The guys
have worked hard and they should
be proud of achieving their national
certificates.”

Their completion of the National
Certificate in Agricultural Contracting
also makes Stuart, Jason and Shannon
only the fourth, fifth and sixth
trainees to ever be awarded this
qualification with InfraTrain.
Truebridge Contractors is an agricultural
business based around the Western
Bays of Lake Taupo. They specialise in
forage harvesting, fertiliser spreading,
cultivation and no till drilling with
specialised cross slot drill.
While Truebridge employ seven full
time staff this number can increase
up to 15 during the busy summer
months.
