InfraTrain BULLETIN Skills for Canterbury The Built Environment Training Alliance (BETA) has launched its Skills for Canterbury project, which aims to ensure there are enough workers sufficiently trained to support the Christchurch rebuild. The Alliance, which is made up of eight Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) including InfraTrain, will work closely with Government, industry and training providers to meet skill requirements in the building, construction and infrastructure industries. InfraTrain Chief Executive Philip Aldridge says, “The demand for workers in the region will increase rapidly over the next twelve months, when the large construction and infrastructure companies tender for contracts. These companies will need significantly more workers than they have presently, and many of the job roles require substantial training, which will delay the rebuilding process.” Philip continues, “We need to start training now, to meet anticipated demand for skilled workers. In the first phase of the project we will identify workers and employers for tailored training programmes in the region. This work will be carried out by a multi-ITO team, including InfraTrain Regional Manager Fiona Malloch. InfraTrain is also currently involved in a short term Ministry of Social Development contract to arrange pre-employment programmes and place people into work. In the next few months alone it expects to arrange training for up to 100 people who have been displaced from jobs in other industries as a result of the earthquake. Training will be delivered by local providers and will enable participants to gain essential skills for civil construction work, such as endorsements for Wheels, Tracks and Rollers, Site Safe accreditation, and a TC1 Card. On successful completion of the programme, InfraTrain will assist participants into roles in the civil construction sector. The first programmes begin in June, and will be delivered over a one week period. Programmes covering a more comprehensive range of skills, lasting two and twelve weeks, are planned by InfraTrain for later in the year. NZRF/RIAA Conference and Exhibition The 2011 New Zealand Roadmarkers’ Federation and Roadmarking Industry Association of Australia Conference will be held at the Novotel, Rotorua on 24 and 25 August 2011. The theme of the conference is Smart Lines and speakers will address road safety initiatives, road safety research, advances with materials and application technology. The conference will have an associated exhibition, a products and technical session by exhibitors, and a site demonstration of application and removal at the Waipa Mill Village site south of Rotorua.
