InfraTrain BULLETIN Outward Bound Scholarship winners announced InfraTrain has announced the winners of the 2011 Outward Bound Scholarship for Modern Apprentices. They are Ashley Higgins of Higgins Contractors Ltd in Palmerston North and Everardus Schreurs of Fulton Hogan in Auckland. Ashley and Everardus will take part in the 2011 BETA Classic Outward Bound course, which is being held in Anakiwa from 3 to 23 September. The Scholarships will also include travel to the Marlborough Sounds Ashley Higgins and include a $500 Kathmandu gear allowance for each winner. InfraTrain offered the Scholarships in conjunction with BETA (the Built Environment Training Alliance), which comprises Industry Training Organisations in the construction and infrastructure sectors. They will help Ashley and Everardus to develop their leadership skills, and provide a shared experience with people from other trades. InfraTrain Chief Executive Philip Aldridge, says, “Outward Bound Scholarships are one of the ways in which InfraTrain supports the development of leadership skills in the infrastructure industry. We believe that growing talented young people is essential for our industry to be productive and successful, now and in the future.” Everardus Schreurs Philip adds, “The standard of Scholarship applications was extremely high again this year, and we are encouraged by the number of employers who recognise the value of industry training and Modern Apprenticeship programmes. Ashley and Everardus stood out as deserving winners of the Scholarship, and we believe they will benefit immensely from the Outward Bound course.” We’ll be catching up with Ashley and Everardus later in the year to hear how they got on! Slinging, lifting and placing course The New Zealand Contractors’ Federation (NZCF) has created a new course for slinging, lifting and placing, with the support of InfraTrain. The course is designed for: • Operators who are using an excavator for lifting • Workers engaged in attaching loads, working directly with suspended loads or acting as dogmen • Management and supervisory staff responsible for overseeing these people The course meets Department of Labour (DoL) compliance requirements under the revised Crane Code. The Code has been in place for one year now, and in event of an incident, DoL will be looking for evidence that operator(s) were suitably trained in slinging, lifting and placing. The content of the course is aligned to unit standard 20875 – Demonstrate knowledge of slinging, lifting and placing with an excavator or loader. InfraTrain encourages all participants to get assessed and have the unit standard registered on their Record of Learning. This will provide formal recognition of their knowledge. Courses are being held at locations across the North and South Island throughout June and July. Latest product developments from InfraTrain National Certificate in Infrastructure Civil Engineering (Laboratory Technician) – Level 4, or (Senior Laboratory Technician) – Level 5 Open for enrolment soon! InfraTrain has developed these qualifications in partnership with CETANZ (the Civil Engineering Testing Association of New Zealand). They have been designed specifically to recognise the skills and knowledge required for civil engineering laboratory testing, and provide a structured career pathway for civil engineering laboratory technicians. Both qualifications are achieved using a proven model of industry training with no classrooms or exams. They include an elective strand in either Aggregate; Bitumen; Soil; Asphalt; Concrete or Field Testing, and can be tailored to meet specific work requirements. A brochure and Training Plans can be viewed at www.infratrain.co.nz National Certificate in Infrastructure Civil Works (Forestry Earthworks) – Level 3 National Certificate in Civil Plant Operation (Bulk Earthmoving) – Level 3 InfraTrain has reviewed and updated its National Certificates for Forestry Earthworks and Bulk Earthmoving. The new qualifications will be open for enrolment soon. The review was undertaken in consultation with key stakeholders to ensure that the qualifications remain relevant, and continue to meet industry needs. InfraTrain would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the Industry Advisory Group involved in the review, and to those who have assisted in the development and review of the accompanying learning resources. Procurement Procedures (formerly Competitive Pricing Procedures) InfraTrain will shortly launch a new qualification for Procurement Procedures. This will replace the existing National Certificate in Asset Management (Competitive Pricing Procedures). Trainees can start gaining credits towards the new National Certificate now. In the interim, they will be enrolled into the existing Competitive Pricing Procedures qualification, and InfraTrain will then transition them into the new qualification once it is launched. First completions – National Certificate in Surveying (Assistant) InfraTrain is delighted to report the first completions of the National Certificate in Surveying (Assistant). Reuben Brown of McKinlay Surveyors 2010 Ltd in New Plymouth was first to achieve the qualification, closely followed by Jason Phillips of Fox and Associates in Christchurch, and Martin Rowe of Gilbert Haymes Associates Ltd in Blenheim. The National Certificate was launched at the end of 2008, and was developed by InfraTrain in partnership with industry experts from the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (NZIS). InfraTrain Chief Executive Philip Aldridge says, “InfraTrain congratulates Reuben, Jason and Martin on their achievement. The National Certificate in Surveying (Assistant) gives status to the skills and knowledge which they have gained, and will provide a solid foundation for their surveying careers.” Read the full story in our August issue. Expiring First Aid unit standards A number of First Aid unit standards used by InfraTrain will expire with effect from 31 December 2013. Replacement unit standards have been identified. If a trainee has already achieved these replacement unit standards through another qualification, they are exempt from completing the expiring unit standards.
