11:40 Panel discussion: Opportunities and challenges in the Asia fibre optic markets
After years of development, China has become the world’s largest fibre optic manufacturer
but also the largest importer of fibre optic preform. Demand for fibre optic in other markets
in Asia is growing fast, and presenting major opportunities for the Asian fibre optic and cable
industry. However, do Asia-based cable companies have the technical strength and
production capacity to manufacture a full range of fibre optic products, along with
developing independent design and manufacturing capabilities for fibre optic preform? For
FTTH architectures in emerging markets how will leapfrogging, replacing copper line with
fibre affect the demand forecast for raw materials? Experts on this panel will answer these
questions and discuss business opportunities for international cable companies ready to
expand their supply to Asian fibre optic markets.
transmission cables
The current development of overhead power transmission lines: newly built and retrofitted
line
Categories of aluminium alloy products for overhead power transmission lines in China
How to increase the application of aluminium alloy conductor: for newly built and
existing lines
Aluminium zirconium alloy series transmission cables: newly built and retro-fitted lines

You Weiren, Director, Zhongtian Technologies Conductor Institute confirmed
16:30 Panel discussion: Applications of aluminium alloy in power transmission
Aluminium is widely used in Europe, North America and India by wire & cable makers as a
major conductor material, but is not as widely used for this purpose in China. Aluminium
could be used more for power cables in China, but Chinese utility companies have not so far
responded to aluminium’s increased cost competitiveness compared to copper. However,
there have been increasing discussions in the industry about using various aluminium alloy
products to replace copper in light of the high and volatile copper prices experienced in
recent years, and China’s high dependence on copper imports. The expert panellists will
debate the pros and cons of using aluminium alloy to replace copper as a conductor material
and assess other viable alternatives.
