Aluminium is widely used in Europe, North America and India by wire & cable makers as a
major conductor material, but is not as widely used for this purpose in China. Aluminium
could be used more for power cables in China, but Chinese utility companies have not so far
responded to aluminium’s increased cost competitiveness compared to copper. However,
there have been increasing discussions in the industry about using various aluminium alloy
products to replace copper in light of the high and volatile copper prices experienced in
recent years, and China’s high dependence on copper imports. The expert panellists will
debate the pros and cons of using aluminium alloy to replace copper as a conductor material
and assess other viable alternatives.
