There are several ways <strong>to</strong> study as a <strong>PhD</strong> student resp.<br />

doc<strong>to</strong>ral fellow and <strong>to</strong> obtain a degree from <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Bayreuth</strong>.<br />

<strong>Bayreuth</strong> <strong>University</strong> has a variety <strong>of</strong> specialized and<br />

Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Schools and Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Programs. The<br />

regular time <strong>to</strong> degree is 3 years, resp. 6 semesters.<br />

Most <strong>PhD</strong> projects are being extended <strong>to</strong> 8 semesters.<br />

1.1 HUMANITIES<br />

1.1.1 BIGSAS – <strong>Bayreuth</strong> Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Gradu<strong>at</strong>e School<br />

<strong>of</strong> African Studies<br />

The aims <strong>of</strong> BIGSAS are <strong>to</strong><br />

bring <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r outstanding<br />

young African and non-African<br />

scholars <strong>to</strong> work jointly in <strong>the</strong><br />

field <strong>of</strong> African Studies, and <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>fer a centre <strong>of</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ive and<br />

innov<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>PhD</strong> training and<br />

research in Germany in<br />

African Studies. Four research<br />

areas allow for challenging <strong>the</strong>oretical studies sensitive <strong>to</strong><br />

emerging basic problems; <strong>the</strong>y also take in<strong>to</strong> account<br />

practical questions and problems concerning <strong>the</strong> African<br />

continent. Thus <strong>the</strong> BIGSAS research areas encompass<br />

basic, str<strong>at</strong>egic and applied research.<br />

1.1.2 Kulturbegegnungen – Cultural Encounters –<br />

Rencontres Culturelles<br />

The overall heading<br />

<strong>of</strong> Cultural<br />

Encounters serves<br />

<strong>to</strong> unite a range <strong>of</strong><br />

research foci, which<br />

in turn provide <strong>the</strong><br />

framework for<br />

diverse individual<br />

his<strong>to</strong>rical,<br />

system<strong>at</strong>ic and<br />

interdisciplinary studies. Globaliz<strong>at</strong>ion has dram<strong>at</strong>ically<br />

increased <strong>the</strong> need for reflection on all intercultural issues.<br />

Research in language, literary and media studies over <strong>the</strong><br />

last two decades has significantly shifted <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong> study<br />

<strong>of</strong> cultural identity, cultural stereotyping and intercultural<br />

communic<strong>at</strong>ion, migr<strong>at</strong>ion, alterity (‘o<strong>the</strong>rness'), syncretism<br />

and hybridity. Language, literary and media studies are<br />

among <strong>the</strong> disciplines <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> vanguard <strong>of</strong> such research<br />

since cultural encounters occur within <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong><br />

communic<strong>at</strong>ive processes which oper<strong>at</strong>e through language<br />

and <strong>the</strong> media.<br />
