3. INDIVIDUAL <strong>PhD</strong>-PROJECTS<br />
It is generally possible and common <strong>to</strong> organize your <strong>PhD</strong><br />
project independently. The first step is <strong>to</strong> identify <strong>to</strong> write a<br />
research proposal. Please check this link for inform<strong>at</strong>ion on<br />

Then you need <strong>to</strong> identify a suitable supervisor. This can be<br />
done by browsing <strong>the</strong> homepages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> different faculties<br />
<strong>of</strong> our university with <strong>the</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> finding <strong>the</strong> chair, whose<br />
research and work group can accommod<strong>at</strong>e your research<br />
interest best. Many chairs provide inform<strong>at</strong>ion in English on<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir homepage.<br />
Please make sure th<strong>at</strong> you find someone as close <strong>to</strong> your<br />
research background as possible. Avoid contacting anyone<br />
<strong>at</strong> random. Random emails will not be answered.<br />
Via email you can introduce yourself and your envisaged<br />
project <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor. You should send a short email but<br />
<strong>at</strong>tach your CV and a brief research proposal.<br />
Should you be successful and raise <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor´s<br />
interest, he/she will write a letter including a supervision<br />
agreement or host guarantee. He/She might even <strong>of</strong>fer you<br />
a salaried position <strong>at</strong> his/her chair.<br />
If no salaried position is available, you can use <strong>the</strong><br />
supervision agreement <strong>to</strong> research funding possibilities<br />
and/or scholarships. You will also need <strong>the</strong> supervision<br />
agreement <strong>to</strong> apply for admission <strong>at</strong> our university.<br />

4. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES<br />
If <strong>the</strong> chair you would like <strong>to</strong> join cannot provide you with a<br />
working contract or scholarship, <strong>the</strong>re are several<br />
possibilities <strong>to</strong> apply for external funding. Please note, th<strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>Bayreuth</strong> <strong>University</strong> does not <strong>of</strong>fer scholarships for<br />
prospective <strong>PhD</strong> students. Only enroled students can apply<br />
for grants. These are not full scholarships but only a limited<br />
financial support.<br />
