Speaking World 1300–2000<br />
The Gradu<strong>at</strong>e School „Central Europe and <strong>the</strong> English<br />
speaking world 1300-2000“ <strong>of</strong>fers an integr<strong>at</strong>ive Master and<br />
<strong>PhD</strong> program. With regards <strong>to</strong> content, both programs are<br />
closely intervowen. The combin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> MA degree and <strong>PhD</strong><br />
amounts <strong>to</strong> a dur<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> five years. Applicants can join <strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>PhD</strong> level. The instruction language is German.<br />

Dissert<strong>at</strong>ions in <strong>the</strong> <strong>PhD</strong><br />

colloquiums. They present and discuss <strong>the</strong>ir research<br />
projects, get <strong>to</strong> know different research methods, learn<br />
how <strong>to</strong> apply for research funding, how <strong>to</strong> manage<br />
projects and how <strong>to</strong> prepare intern<strong>at</strong>ional conferences.<br />

The research program<br />
aims <strong>at</strong> analyzing <strong>the</strong><br />
tension between<br />
intellectual property rights<br />
such as p<strong>at</strong>ents, trade<br />
marks and copyright on<br />
<strong>the</strong> one hand and <strong>the</strong><br />
public interest in <strong>the</strong><br />
freedom <strong>to</strong> use<br />
inventions, distinguishing signs and literary, musical and<br />
artistic works, i.e. <strong>the</strong> public domain, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand.<br />
This subject <strong>of</strong> research pertains <strong>to</strong> all types <strong>of</strong> intellectual<br />
property rights; it encompasses not only priv<strong>at</strong>e law but also<br />
constitutional law, criminal law and intern<strong>at</strong>ional law,<br />
including <strong>the</strong>ir his<strong>to</strong>rical dimensions; it aims both <strong>at</strong><br />
fundamental legal research and <strong>at</strong> specific issues <strong>of</strong><br />
practical relevance, which need <strong>the</strong> overall perspective for<br />
convincing solutions; finally it is <strong>of</strong> gre<strong>at</strong> current relevance,<br />
particularly in <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> recent developments in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong><br />
inform<strong>at</strong>ion technology. The instruction language is<br />
