50th National Pharmacy Week Celebration

IPA-UP State Branch
National Pharmacy week 2011 was
organized from 20 th to 26 th November in
Lucknow and other parts of Uttar Pradesh.
NPW 2011 was inaugurated by Dr. Satyawan
Singh, President, IPA-UP State at IPA
State Office. State Level IPA Elocution
Competition was held at Northern India
Engineering College, Lucknow followed by
poster presentation, rangoli and cultural
programmes. The Program was presided
over by Dr. (Prof). Shailendra Saraf,
Director Pharmacy, NIEC Lucknow. Mr. R.
A. Gupta, Secretary; Dr. M.Vijayakumar
Joint Secretary and other senior members
of IPA UP graced the occasion. On 26 th
November 2011, a program was organized
at RITM Lucknow under the chairmanship
of Dr (Prof). Pushphendra K. Tripathi,
Director, Pharmacy RITM. Mr. R. A. Gupta,
delivered a lecture on the theme. IPA
UP state branch in collaboration with
Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Pharmacy
(MGIP), Lucknow initiated the Pharma
Talent Search Examination for the students
studying in 10+2 (intermediate) classes.
Question Booklet for “Pharma Talent Search
Examination” was jointly released by Dr.
M.Vijayakumar, Joint Secretary, IPA UP
State and Dr. Zeashan Hussain, Director
MGIP Lucknow, in a program organized at
MGIP on 26 th November 2011.
IPA-Bengal State Branch
The week-long NPW Golden Jubilee
Celebration started at the Science City
Mini Auditorium, Kolkata on 20 th November,
2011. Dr. Nirmal Maji, MLA and Chairman,
West Bengal Pharmaceutical and
Phytochemical Development Corporation
Limited inaugurated the program. He
elaborated on the important roles played
by a pharmacist, especially in rural health
centres. Acharya P.C. Ray Memorial lecture
was delivered by Dr D. B. Ananthanarayan.
who also spoke on “Need for change in
Role and Involvement of Pharmacists in
Health Care Management”. Mr. Alok Ghosh,
President, Technical Operations, Lupin
Limited made a presentation on “Challenges
and opportunities of Pharma Industry”.
Diabetes detection and awareness camp
was organised by IPA jointly with NGO
“Diabetes and You”. A pharma rally was
organized. Eminent personalities gave
lectures on the theme. Dr. Subhash C.
Mandal, Vice President, IPA, Bengal Branch
on behalf of IPA, Bengal Branch presented
an approach paper on 23 rd November, 2011.
The entire program was coordinated by
the conveners-Mr. P.K.Mallik, Mr. Indrajit
Kar, Mr. P.K.Banerjee and Mr. Sudipta
Kaity under the leadership of the Chairman
of the 50 th NPW Committee, Dr. Jayanta

IPA – MSB celebrated the 50 th National
Pharmacy Week from 20 th November to 27 th
November, 2011 jointly with Indian Drug

Bombay College of Pharmacy.The 50 th
National Pharmacy Week was inaugurated
on Sunday, 20 th November, 2011 by the
Chief Guest Mr. A. I. Mehta, senior member
of IPA at the ACE auditorium of Bombay
College of Pharmacy. Dr. A. K. Kapadia
was the Guest of Honour, Dr. H. P. Tipnis
delivered the Key Note Address and Prof.
H. L. Bhalla presided over the function.A
Community Pharmacists’ Convention was
organized on Sunday, 27 th November, 2011
at NCRD’s Sterling Institute of Pharmacy,
Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The Convention
was inaugurated by Mrs. Manjiri Gharat,
Secretary IPA (CPD).The closing ceremony
was held on 27 th Nov. 2011 at NCRD’s
Sterling Institute of Pharmacy. It was
inaugurated by the Guest of Honor, Shri
Mahesh Zagade, Commissioner, Food &
Drug Administration, Maharashtra State and
Shri J. S. Shinde, President, Maharashtra
State Chemists and Druggists Association.

IPA-Gujarat State Branch jointly with
Ramanbhai Patel College of Pharmacy,
Charotar University of Science and
Technology (CHARUSAT) organized an
Inaugural function of 50th Golden Jubilee
National Pharmacy Week 2011 on 24th
November at CHARUSAT campus, Changa.
The Inaugural function was followed by a
Symposium on the theme and a Pharma
Quiz Competition for students from different
Pharmacy colleges. Dr. H. G. Koshia,
President and Dr. J B Dave, Secretary
represented IPA-GSB and Shri Virendrabhai
Patel, trustee of Shri Charotar Moti Sattavis
Patidar Kelavani Mandal presided over the

of Honour Dr. Paresh Patel, an endoscopy
surgeon expressed their opinions regarding
the need for recognising and strengthening
the role of Pharmacist. The speakers

Healthcare Initiatives, CHARUSAT and Dr.
Milan Satia, CEO, Ethicare Clinical Trial
Services shared their experiences and view
points on the responsibilities of a Pharmacist
as an integral part of healthcare system.

The award function of National Pharmacy
Week 2011 organized by IPA Pune branch
was held on 7th January 2012 in presence of
Dr. B. Suresh, President, Pharmacy Council
of India. Mr. S.T. Patil, Joint Commissioner,
FDA (MS) and Mr. Shirish Dabhade, Asst.
Commissioner (MS) were felicitated on this
occasion. Dr. Sanjay Sawant , President,
IPA Pune, Dr. Atmaram Pawar, Secretary
IPA Pune, Mr. Sachin Itkar, convener of
the function and Mr. Dinesh Furia of Nirali
Prakashan shared the dais. About 1800
pharmacy students from 30 Pharmacy
colleges in the Pune region participated
in 11 different events of NPW celebration
organized at different colleges during 28th
November to 4th December 2011. Activities
like Patient counselling, oral presentations,
poster presentations, Mad-Ads, Elocution,
Debate, interview skills, pharma- detailing,
just- a-minute, street-plays, essay etc. were
organized. Allana Institute of Pharmacy
bagged Overall Champion Trophy in
D.Pharm category and Sinhgad College of
Pharmacy, Narhe bagged Overall Winner
Trophy in UG and PG category. Dr. Neeraj
Vyavhare was the coordinator of NPW 2011
events. The NPW 2011 Award function was
co-associated by Nirali Prakashan Pune.
IPA Mysore Branch
IPA Mysore Branch in association with
JSS college of Pharmacy celebrated
50 th National Pharmacy Week from 22 nd
to 29 th Nov. 2011. Dr. H.G. Shivakumar,
Principal and President, IPA, Mysore branch
welcomed the guests. Dr. Mruthyunjaya
P. Kulenur, Registrar JSSCP Mysore
addressed the gathering and spoke on the
future of pharmacy profession in India. Mr.
Rachu Babu DGM operation, Inno Pharma
India Pvt. Ltd. delivered the key note address
& highlighted the role of a pharmacist as a
Pharmaco-economist in Product Life-
Cycle Management, Pharmacovigilance,
Manufacturing Chemist, R&d Scientist and
strategist. Mr. B.t. khanapure, Deputy
Drugs Controller, Regional office, Mysore
briefed about the Role of Pharmacist as
Drug Inspector and the steps taken by
the regulatory authority in Karnataka to
prohibit spurious drugs from reaching the
market. Dr. P.A. Kushalappa, director of
Academics, JSS University delivered the
presidential address. Mr. Afrasim Moin
proposed the vote of thanks. A Blood
donation camp was organized and literary
programs were held for the students. A
rally was organized to create general public
awareness about the Role of Pharmacist in
Public Health & about pharmacy profession.
The students and staff distributed pamphlets
containing information about the right usage
of medication. Lectures on “Challenges in
Natural Product Analysis with Changing
Regulatory Perspective” “Recent Trends in
Drug Development Process” & “Education
and carrier options after pharmacy – Myths
& Facts” were delivered by noted speakers.
Career awareness programme for X, XI,
XII classes was conducted where students
were informed about pharmacy courses.
IPA Baroda Branch
As a part of the golden jubilee National
Pharmacy Week celebrations, IPA- Vadodara
branch in association with neighbouring
pharmacy colleges conducted a “Public
Awareness Programme” from 27th to
29th January 2012. This awareness
programme saw IPA members; faculties
and students address the people on
various aspects related to manufacturing
of medicines, rationale use of medicines
and hazards of self medication. An
‘Awareness Rally’ was held on 25th
January which saw the participation of
more than 400 pharmacy students &
teaching faculties of 6 pharmacy colleges
of Vadodara. The rally aimed to generate
awareness & educate people on aspects
related to safe, rational and effective use
of medicines by showcasing numerous
posters & placards. A seminar was also
conducted by IPA Baroda branch jointly
with Chemist & Druggist Association,
Vadodara on Good Pharmacy Practices.
Three speakers delivered information
on GPP namely Mr. P.G. Doshi (Joint
commissioner FDCA Baroda), Mr. S.
P. Rathod (reader MSU Baroda), Dr.
J.B.Dave (PG Director Sarvajanik College
Kherva).
Indore Institute of
Pharmacy, Madhya Pradesh
Indore Institute of Pharmacy celebrated
the National Pharmacy Week-2011 on 23 rd
November, 2011 by administering oath of
pharmacy to all staff and students. The
occasion was graced by Mr. Rohit Jainendra
Jain, Chairman, Shail Group of Institutions
and Mr. Siddharth Verma, Vice Chairman,
Shail Group of Institutions. Professor
Umesh Parekh, Principal, Indore Institute
of Pharmacy, in his inaugural address,
elaborated the important role played by
a pharmacist in the Health Care System.
The students depicted the role of hospital
pharmacy through colorful posters and
rangoli. A quiz competition on ‘Vision of a
Pharmacist’ evoked considerable interest
amongst the students. A blood donation
camp was organized to mark the end of
the occasion.
Y. B. Chavan College of
Pharmacy, Aurangabad
National Pharmacy week was organised
from 21 st November to 27 th November
2011. Various events were organized such
as Essay writing competition, Articles and
caption writing, Elocution competition, power
point presentation and poster competition.
The winners of the in-house competitions
participated in the intercollegiate events
organized by the Indian Pharmaceutical
Association, Aurangabad Branch. Street
plays were also arranged. About 40
volunteers donated their blood in the blood
donation camp.
Annamacharya College of
Pharmacy
Free mega medical camp was conducted
on 27 th November, 2011 in Annamacharya
College of Pharmacy in connection to
50 th National Pharmacy Week Golden
Jubilee celebrations. Justice S. Jaya
Lakshmi, Civil Judge, Nandalur inaugurated
the programme. Doctors from various
specializations gave free services and
pharma students actively participated to
fulfill the theme. More than 500 patients
from nearby villages benefitted from the
programme and medicines were given free
of cost.

College, Aurangabad
U.B.K.W.T’s D. Pharmacy College,
Aurangabad celebrated the National
Pharmacy Week from 15 th to 21 st December,
2011. On the last day, Dr. Ayaz Ali, Professor
of Y.B.Chavan College of Pharmacy,
Aurangabad and Mr. Sayyed Aquil,
Executive, Regulatory Affairs, Wockhardt
Pharmaceuticals, Aurangabad expressed
their views on the theme. A pharmacy quiz
competition and a rally was organized on the
same day by the students of this institute for
the awareness of cardiovascular diseases
and their preventive measures among the
villagers. The rally was inaugurated by Mr.
R.A.Pagare, Village Development Officer
of Kujkheda. During the rally, informative
leaflets about cardiovascular diseases were
also distributed.

National Pharmacy week 2011 was
celebrated in college of Pharmaceutical
Sciences from 20 th to 27 th November 2011.
NPW was inaugurated by the principal
Prof. a. prameela Rani. Various events
like Elocution, Essay writing, quiz, dancing
etc., were also organized. a pharma rally
was organized. A “Free Medical Camp
and Health Awareness Programme” was
organized under the guidance of Honorable
Registrar I/C, Acharya Nagarjuna university,
Prof. G. Prasad and village sarpanch. on
29 th November, 2011 a valedictory function
was held with Prof. K.P.R. Chowdary as
the Chief guest and Sri P. Vinay Kumar
as the Guest of honor. A guest lecture by
Prof. K.P.R. Chowdary was also organized
on the topic “Research Methodologies in
Pharmaceutical Sciences”.

Institute
National Pharmacy Week -2011 was
observed in Padmavathi college of
Pharmacy & Research Institute, Dharmapuri
from 23 rd to 30 th November, 2011. The
inauguration of the week commenced
with presidential address by honorable
Dr. kalaivani, MBBS, DGO, Joint Director of
Health Services at Krishnagiri Government
Head Quarters Hospital, Krishnagiri and
started with a rally for awareness related
to the theme. Elocution competition
was conducted. Red Ribbon Club of the
College was inaugurated at Padmavathi
auditorium within the campus. A seminar
was organized on “Career Development
Programme for Pharma Students”. More
than 400 students participated in this
programme. “Awareness Programme at
Higher Secondary School Level” among the
students at different schools of Dharmapuri
Region was organized.
Adhiparasakthi college of
Pharmacy
Adhiparasakthi college of Pharmacy,
Melmaruvathur organized the National
Pharmacy Week from 20 th - 27 th November
2011. The opening ceremony was inaugurated
by Dr. T. Vetrichelvan (Principal & HOD,
Department of Pharmaceutical analysis.)
An awareness rally in different places of
Melmaruvathur was organized to educate
people regarding the pharmacy profession,
career opportunities in pharmacy and safe
use of prescription medicines. Pharmacy
awareness seminars were conducted in
many schools at Kanchipuram District. A
health awareness camp was organized at
Kattukudalur village, Kanchipuram district
where villagers were made aware about
safe use of medicines and OTC products
by help of street plays and pamphlet
distribution. Competitions like debate,
extempore, quiz were organized.
JSPM’s Charak College of
Pharmacy and Research
50 th National Pharmacy Week 2011 was
celebrated at JSPM’s Charak College of
Pharmacy and Research, Wagholi between
28 th Nov. to 2 nd Dec. in association with
IPA, Pune branch. An awareness rally
was organized during which informative
pamphlets on various communicable
diseases were also distributed. Various
programs like group discussion, poster
presentation, paper presentation, Pharma
jam, debate, essay, Pharma ad-mad, patient
counseling, Pharma detailing, elocution, etc
were also organized during this pharmacy
week.

Sree Siddaganga College of Pharmacy,
Tumkur, NSS branch in association with
IPA, Karnataka state branch, B’lore,
organized a Pharmacy Rally as a part
of the 50 th National pharmacy week on

The National Pharmacy Week, 2011 was
celebrated in Institute of Pharmacy, Kalyani
in association with IPA-Bengal Branch.
An educational rally was arranged on 23 rd
November, 2011. The rally was flagged
off by Honorable Pradip Sur, Chairman
of Kalyani Municipality. A number of
placards were displayed during the rally to
create awareness among the public on the
important role played by the pharmacist in
the health care system. A voluntary blood
donation camp was also organized in the
institution campus on the occasion.
Parul Institute of Pharmacy
On behalf of Pharmacy week as a part of the
Material Pharmacy week celerations, Parul
Institute of Pharmacy organized a three
days exhibition “PHARMA-EXPO 2011.”
450 students from seven schools attended
the exhibition where they were motivated
to interact with pharmacy post graduate
students and kindle their interest in the field
of pharmacy. The expo consisted of various
sections catering to the main divisions of
pharmacy education – viz Pharmaceutics,
Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry
and Pharmacognosy. Each section was
planned with various live experiments
presenting the importance of these
subjects.

The College of Pharmacy, Coimbatore
celebrated the 50 th National Pharmacy
Week celebrations during the third & fourth
week of November 2011. As a part of the

of Ayurvedic Formulation and Importance
of its Standardization”. “Application of
HPTLC in meeting the Challenges of
Standardization and Bio Estimation of
Plant drug/Herbal Formulations’’, “An
Insight into basic Concepts of NMR as a
Structure Elucidation Tool” and “Herbal
drug Interaction – An Overview”. The
celebration saw Dr. T. K. Ravi being
bestowed with the prestigious “Award of
Professional Excellence” given by Mr.
Rosaiah, the Chancellor of the University
and Governor of Tamil Nadu. Dr. S.
Gopalakrishnan was honored with the “Life
Time Achievement Award”. the students
exhibited excellent performance in both the
cultural and literary activities.

held on 23 rd Nov. 2011 in the Campus of
the College of Pharmaceutical science,
ODISHA with pomp and grandeur. the Chief
Guest of the occasion was Mrs Mamina

Parida, Principal & state Council Member,
IPA highlighted the importance, need and
sanctity of the day. A silent Pharma Rally
was conducted for this occasion.

donate blood and affirmed the relevance of
Pharmacist in creating awareness for blood
donation among the mass. Rangoli, Quiz
Competition, Model and Poster Presentation

Health Camp was organized wherein free
medical check up, medicine distribution
and health education were made available
to the locals. Health Awareness March on
the theme “Tobacco is Injurious to Health”
was held.

Recent times have witnessed a lot of patent
filing activity in India especially in the field of
pharmaceuticals after the Government of India,
amended the earlier Patent Act. The current
Patent Act, now provides for the protection
of pharmaceuticals. Product patents are now
recognized and granted in India in the field of
pharmaceuticals.
A subsequent development to this amendment
has led to Indian Pharmaceutical companies
recover their R & D investments by way
of licensing the new molecules to foreign
companies abroad and earn revenues. In
addition, one very often hears about copyright suits especially happening with the
release of Bollywood movies and then being settled between the parties. These
are a pointer towards the fact that IPR’s are here to stay and get strengthened
in the future.
The books IPRs and Pharmaceuticals by Abhinav Agrawal, explains to an
unfamiliar reader the basic concepts of IPR without much legal jargon. It is
divided into seven chapters outlining the history, development, patent laws,
commercialization, international patenting and patenting in pharmaceuticals.
Under the chapter on Patent Laws, the important elements have been dealt with
in a brief and concise manner. The chapter on Patents and Pharmaceuticals also
provides examples of case studies in brief. In addition, under Appendices the
author has provided an exhaustive list of resources which include the addresses
of IP offices in India, international websites, the various forms required under
Indian Patents Act, technology and regulatory issues, IPR statistics and the
Member Nations of various treaties. A question bank has also been provided for
the benefit of the students.
This book would really serve as a “Handbook” for a person for an Introduction
to IPR especially in the Pharmaceuticals arena and would be useful to students
to get an overview of IPR.
