Bikes 2014
Often I think that bicycles should have been available for long on prescription
– where else can the side effects of something which supports the health be rated
as positive? As to me, in any case, a slight burning in my muscles after a liberating
tour is not negative in any sense – and I do not have to consult my doctor or
pharmacist at first…
Cycling creates a balance within the body itself and with nature as well. It guards us
against an otherwise impending burnout via a healthy workout. En route, we meet
interesting new people and thus do enjoy our spare time in nature together with
others. And first of all, we set ourselves new goals again and again. Fortunately,
bikers are always able to decide themselves which dose of this “athletic medicine”
is good for them: A tiny stimulation gives us a boost while a too demanding challenge
can spoil the fun sometimes. In other words: For some bikers, just a short
trip to a forest cafe can indeed be as satisfactory and enjoyable as a terrific “Tour
des Grandes Alpes” for others.
One of my personal favourites is the Camino de Santiago with its many variations.
The northern route along the Atlantic Ocean challenges the one’s constitution with
numerous ascents while rewarding the rider with awe-inspiring sea views again
and again. From Sevilla, the Via de la Plata (Silver Way) leads to Santiago de Compostela
in the far north of the Iberian Peninsula. En route, it passes towns and cities
like Cacéres, Salamanca or Merida with its many ancient remains – the Romans
seem to have left just yesterday.
This year, I followed the Caminho Português by MTB this year together with my
chap Reimund Dietzen. Starting in Lisbon, we had to master a total of 900 km – at
first quite dusty but getting all the more idyllic and greener towards the end. Yes,
and the athletic experience ruled again: In the evenings, our muscles were burning.
Nature does not
have to strive to be
meaningful.
It is meaningful.
But nevertheless – or perhaps for that very reason? – that tour was exactly the right
decision after all those busy Eurobike preparations and bike-show days. As our
destination, the Cathedral of Santiago outshined all tour stages and made all physical
efforts a minor matter. In addition, it opened our awareness for the personal
encounters along our pilgrimage route: One day, we met two road racers from the
Allgäu – a very young one, the other one much older. With sparkling eyes, the latter
let out his age: 76 years! So we decided spontaneously to repeat the pilgrimage in
a few years’ time and then look as healthy and athletic as our new friend!
All this is enabled by the bicycle – or rather by the one in the saddle of a good
bicycle. The rider defines her/his goals, pedals, pilots and achieves them in the
end – only to set new and exceeding goals immediately afterwards. That’s how it
runs in the course of a fulfilled and healthy life. Nothing could be more attractive
or meaningful.
With this in mind,
The fascination
of cycling
Do just enjoy
what you want
lei·sure time [‘leʒəʳ taɪm]: time during which someone does
not have to work and has no special obligations; time free for hobbies
or recreation. Since the German standard dictionary Duden
has included the definition of “leisure time” for the very first time in
1929, the social recognition has changed very much. Especially
the individual recognition of this “freely available time” seems to
worsen: More and more, we seem to be bound by obligatory
work processes while there is less and less time left for any funproviding
activities.
As a German bike manufacturer with a company history of now
almost 40 years, CENTURION has been feeling right from the outset
a traditional obligation for exactly this leisure time which is a
true treasure of our society. Right from the beginning, our bikes
have never been just pure pieces of sports equipment but also
and anyway especially providers of fun. That’s why the CENTU-
RION brand portfolio has been extended again and again: In MY
2014, it ranges from trainer bikes for kids up to an enormous lineup
of 25 e-bike models. Thus it enables each bike enthusiast to
discover the personally perfect bike.
CENTURION’s quite long history began in 1976 when company
founder Wolfgang Renner laid the foundation stone for the brand
with the first road bike models. Not only as a successful artistic,
road and cyclo-cross rider himself but especially as an extremely
curious explorer, he quickly aimed his pioneering spirit at up to
then unknown options. Already in 1979, Wolfgang Renner helped
to establish the US trend sport “BMX” successfully when he then
acted as a mainspring for the German Cycling Association. And
6
The fascination of cycling
only three years later, he took the (not only for CENTURION) so
far most effective step in Germany’s contemporary bike history:
From a trip to the USA, Wolfgang Renner brought back the brilliant
idea to open the there emerging MTB scene also for the
German local market. But instead of just importing US bikes, the
mastermind behind CENTURION indeed created with the model
“Country” (1982) an own German archetype of the MTB – with
this, a new great bike generation did celebrate its premiere.
The rest is literally history: CENTURION has been continuing the
step-by-step refinement of the MTB. Not least because Wolfgang
Renner himself gathered new knowledge for MTB improvement
again and again during his legendary travels (e. g. through Tibet):
Until today, modern MTB riders owe for instance the CENTURION
model “No Pogo” (introduced 1993) the awareness that full-suspension
MTBs only provide real riding fun when drivetrain influences
do not result in annoying chassis “pogo” any more as it had
once been for a rather long time. In all those years, CENTURION
“just besides” introduced the very first trekking bike, developed
road and TT machines, opened the own product portfolio also for
young kids and last not least entered the sustainably worthwhile
e-bike market with a very strong presence. But always without
forgetting each individual rider and her/his ambition to experience
as much fun and joy in the saddle as possible.
Wolfgang Renner
Company Founder CENTURION
The bike has been my companion
since my earliest days. Either as a
sports device in my youth, as a
co-explorer on my travels e. g.
through Tibet and across the
Alps or today as the base for new
athletic challenges again and again
– so I can say: The fascination of
cycling fulfils my life.
TEAM
CENTURION VAUDE
Fun on the collective
way to success
team·work [‘ti:mwɜ:k]: product of a collective effort. It is by no
means a matter of course that a bike brand promotes the respective
competitive sport. We at CENTURION, however, are most certainly
convinced that our specific sponsoring of the TEAM CEN-
TURION VAUDE is an extremely good idea for several reasons.
On the one hand, we really enjoy supporting ambitioned athletes
whose successes result from tireless and tiring efforts. Unfortunately,
to train hard without any excuses over long weeks or
months is not rewarded all too often: Many athletes begin their
personal winter break with numerous rankings below the podium
sphere – and it is certainly and especially annoying when the own
fitness level may have been sufficient in contrast to the insufficient
material utilized. The five protagonists of the TEAM CENTURION
VAUDE ride our Twentyniner hardtail Backfire Carbon Ultimate
Race.29. After Markus Kaufmann’s triumph in the German National
Marathon Championships 2012, the team’s working tool
has impressively proved its excellent suitability for competitions
by helping to win the prestigious BIKE Transalp racing event just
one year later. For Season 2014, the frame weight of the top-ofthe-line
model from our carbon hardtail series has been reduced
by another 80 g. Therefore this bike is undoubtedly a top recommendation
for further trophy hunts.
But on the other hand, supporting a racing team successfully
means of course more than “just” the intention to be successful:
From the experiences of our athletes, we gather highly valuable
knowledge for the refinement of our bikes as well as for fundamental
approaches to completely new constructions. That’s why CEN-
8
TEAM CENTURION VAUDE
TURION has decided for a concept which is absolutely unique all
over Germany: Hannes Genze who is one of the most experienced
racers of the TEAM CENTURION VAUDE also brings in his knowledge
as an engineer for our R & D department – racing and bike
development can not be connected more closely to each other.
Finally, this constellation is not only a benefit for the Marathon experts
of our team but of course also for you as a CENTURION customer:
Assured, the concentrated knowledge is completely and
directly used in our work on our “non-racers” as well.
All in all, this might at first sound very performance-related and
especially result-oriented. But the relationship between the TEAM
CENTURION VAUDE and us as the material sponsor represents
definitely much more than just the collective work on products
and successes. After now three shared years, it becomes more
and more evident that the team sees itself as a family welcoming
everyone who works for the common objective. Therefore the
TEAM CENTURION VAUDE realizes its “teamwork” literally as a
collective effort and thereby creates a “team around the team”.
Hereby, CENTURION wants to thank all members of the TEAM
CENTURION VAUDE for this mutual experience – we are gladly
looking forward to a collective Season 2014!
Richard Dämpfle
Team Manager
Its markedly familiar character
distinguishes the TEAM
CENTURION VAUDE from other
bike squads. It is self-evident that
we do strive for athletic success
– but we are not interested in
enforcing it. That’s why we are
able to preserve something which
competitive sports unfortunately
lack all too often: fun.
Design, Research
& Development
Perfectly adapted
to a new bike
the splits [ðə splɪts]: artistic figure during which the legs are
stretched out in opposite directions to create a horizontal line.
For some items, a good look is sufficient. A floor lamp, for example,
is considered to be a good one when it just does not topple
over and can be lightened with an internal bulb. Anything additional
is pure design… Other objects must be perfectly functional
in the first instance while an attractive visual appearance is just
an additional benefit. For example, the form of a bike is roughly
predetermined while its function (depending on the category) is
already defined clearly. But we at CENTURION are deeply convinced
that function and design have to go hand in hand – to
ensure that your bike provides maximum fun already at the very
first crank turn. Concerning this, we deliberately dare this kind
of the splits repeatedly. And we are rewarded for doing so: With
reliable regularity, CENTURION is honoured with design awards
and convincing tests results in bike magazines. Both mean an
accolade for our efforts in any respect. For instance, the “BIKE”
magazine awarded our Backfire Carbon Ultimate Race.27 with
the top evaluation “super” (BIKE 10/2013) already after its very
first individual test – an obvious signal that our new elegant star
in the 27.5“ carbon hardtail sky is a true highlight of Season 2014.
In this context, all our designers and R & D experts attach great
importance to the fact that this combination of exciting look and
impeccable functionality must not be a basic question of money:
Already in the beginner segment, CENTURION utilizes materials
and production technologies which guarantee reliable riding fun
for years. For instance, already our “Eco” and “Basic” aluminium
frames consist of a 6061 alloy which combines a low weight on
10
Design, Research & Development
the one hand with very convincing stiffness data on the other.
And thanks to the high-pressure “Technoforming System”, single
frame tubes get specific shapes which harmonize form and function
optimally with regard to the respective field of application. Exciting
designs are therefore found in all CENTURION price ranges.
To ensure that you can still enjoy your CENTURION even after a
long period of demanding cycling, we attach great importance
to controls relevant for the safety and quality of our bikes. One
essential requirement is that we accept only R & D partners working
reliably in full accordance with our specifications. In addition,
each concept is checked meticulously until completion – with
the help of external experts as well as on our own in-house test
benches which are compliant to the strict “tour” standard. Simultaneously,
international norms and guideline values must be fulfilled
and even be surpassed in most cases.
“Just besides“ all this function and quality, CENTURION bikes repeatedly
manage to look outstandingly beautiful. This is attested
by numerous awards such as the international design prize “Focus
Open” which was won in Silver by our pedelec E-Fire (2011) and
by our Backfire Carbon Ultimate 3.29 (2012). We think that this
is all right with you, isn’t it – or is there any argument against the
perfected combination of visual appearance and performance?
Matthias Fingerle
Head of R&D at CENTURION
High technical development
demands can only be transported
optimally by equally sophisticated
designs. That’s why the designers
and engineers at CENTURION
work at eye level with each other
from the outset.
Carbon Technology
The black gold for
bikers and road racers
fas·ci·na·tion [fæsɪ’neɪʃən]: appealing, captivating effect;
adorable charisma, attractiveness. Since the bicycle has started
its continuous triumph in our society at the end of the 19th century,
especially its construction and the raw materials primarily used
have changed with a lasting effect. While the very first bikes still
were real steel monsters, modern versions are preferably made of
light aluminium alloys – or of carbon. Just the sheer sound of this
famous word is often enough to raise the attention of bike enthusiasts.
Because the latter know all too well that this fascinating
and cutting-edge raw material offers almost unlimited possibilities
with regard to frame construction and frame design.
But basically, it is wrong to describe carbon as a raw material: the
technically correct term would be “carbon-fibre reinforced plastic”.
Because the “black gold” is a highly complex mixture of all
those carbon fibres, special resins (the so-called “matrix“) and
especially its developers’ comprehensive experience. When we
look at the sophisticated structure of individual frame sections,
carbon fibres with different characteristics and alignment concepts
can be observed – purposefully integrated into the special
matrix to provide the respective frame section with its specific
characteristics. One example: A bottom bracket as the maximally
stiff transformation point of the rider’s pedal power has a different
structure and therefore a different character in comparison to e. g.
seat or chain stays which have to offer stiffness as well as enough
flexibility for cutiing-edge rearstay comfort.
As one of the first bike brands, CENTURION has already recognized
the advantages of carbon very early: Fascinating lightness,
12
Technology
Elegant function
Carbon is a real blessing
– equally for developers,
designers and of course
definitely for you as an
enthused biker. Because
besides its unrivalled
lightness, carbon offers
inestimable advantages with
regard to functional shaping.
Whenever a special frame
part is due to be designed to
perform its specific duty as
beautifully as possible, the
fibre composite material is a
highly regarded partner.
unrivalled options with regard to frame design and hence a very
special predestination to realize the technically different demands
of a bike frame optimally at the construction’s individual sections.
Thus carbon bikes are an inherent part of the CENTURION product
program also in MY 2014.
Especially road racers can look forward to a true carbon highlight
for the new season: The Gigadrive has been revised completely
and presents itself for 2014 as a clearly identifiable CENTURION
with several technical finesses. With only 1050 g (at frame height
56 cm), the new frame offers the typical lightness of carbon – but
without touching the limits of lightweight constructions with all
their imponderables. Internal routing of all cables and wires (suitable
for mechanical as well as for electronic shifting components)
speaks the language of the future. The special concept of the
new Gigadrive ensures that the BB and headtube sections combine
– due to maximal stiffness data – sportive propulsion and
top-level tracking precision with the cutting-edge comfort of slim
rear stays, actively supported by the suitability for tyre widths up
to 28 mm. Thus the Gigadrive is a sportive sprinter as well as a
long-distance partner in equal measure.
But not only fans of slim tyres are completely convinced by carbon:
Also passionate MTB riders – hardtail as well as fully pilots
– clearly benefit from the outstanding characteristics of hightech
carbon models. Especially the total weight of a bike which
is designed for mastering even the steepest uphills successfully
can never be low enough. Our brand-new 27.5” hardtail Backfire
Carbon.27, the Transalp winner bike Backfire Carbon.29 and ›
Technology
13
the 29” fully Numinis Carbon.29 even three times satisfy wishes
for carbon.
With outstanding 950 g (at frame height 46 cm), the scales level
off already early in the case of our new racing hardtail Backfire
Carbon.27 – excellent data for a frame of the new wheelset size.
All the more pleasant: The postulate for modern features such as
internal cable routing or a 12 mm thru-axle at the rear is fulfilled
very impressively. Due to CENTURION’s typically tapered steerer,
the carbon racer convinces with top-level steering precision. Due
to the broad connection with High Direct Mount derailleur, the
bottom bracket presents itself equally stiff and thus propulsionorientated.
On the other hand, comfort rules at the rearstay: Thin
stays, a brake mount relocated into the rear frame triangle and a
slim seat tube for a 27.2 mm seat post caress the athlete’s backside.
The two Twentyniners of CENTURION MY 2014 have been re-engineered
partially: The frame weight of the racing hardtail Backfire
Carbon.29 has been reduced by 80 g – certainly one of the factors
which made this bike the fastest machine at the 2013 version
of the legendary BIKE Transalp. And our already completely convincing
tour fully Numinis Carbon.29 transfers its well-proven 12
mm rear thru-axle to the aluminium equivalents of the series – for
even more stiffness and considerably simplified wheel change.
14
Technology
Incredibly versatile
Besides the design aspect,
especially the versatility of
the raw material makes carbon
frames so fascinating.
Depending on the respective
alignment concepts which
connect the single carbon
fibres at certain positions,
different load profiles occur.
The impressive versatility of
the black gold is attested by
the very different functions
of for example a rearstay
rocker link, or of an intelligently
integrated derailleur
hanger or of a supported
top tube construction (e. g.
at our carbon fully Numinis
Carbon).
Technology
15
Float Link &
Virtual Pivot Point
The best solution
for each task
chas·sis [ʃæsi]: the total of a vehicle’s front and rear axle components
which provide guidance and suspension while connecting
the wheels to the vehicle. There are a lot of different factors
which determine if a fully functions optimally and offers its pilot the
performance she/he expects from her/his MTB with front and rear
suspension. At the same time, the respectively selected chassis
system itself influences several aspects – therefore the chassis
always plays a key role. For MY 2014, CENTURION equips the
models Numinis.29 and No Pogo.27 with the excellent “Float”
system which is a so-called “supported single-pivot construction”.
On the other hand, our Trailbanger features a “Virtual Pivot
Point” (VPP) – the question is why?
No matter which rearstay solution is selected by a bike engineer:
Inevitably, an R&D expert has to consider some advantages of
a certain system as more important than those of a rivalling one
– and must therefore accept instantaneously that other aspects
fade into the background. This understanding with regard to
technical realization is of crucial importance for the answer to the
question which solution might be the best one for full-suspension
bikes. Clear answer: Each and none. Because as less as there is
the MTB, the situation does not exist for MTB riders. Therefore
the task always is to find the optimum compromise – but to realize
this compromise finally in a no-compromise way and without any
technical deficits.
For 2014, our All-Mountain bike No Pogo has been upgraded
from 26“ to the new wheelset standard of 27.5“. It is a ideal example
to understand the decision process for a certain MTB
CENTURION R&D Engineer
Fully is not equal to fully – depending on
demand and field of application,
different solutions for an optimal chassis
are required. At CENTURION, long
and extensive tests reveal which option
achieves the best result for the biker
finally.
chassis system: So far, the No Pogo (like the 160 mm Enduro
model Trailbanger) was a quad-pivot construction with virtual
pivot point. Greatest advantage of this concept: An always active
chassis which does not get rigid even with pulled rear brake
while keeping highly sensible surface contact. Especially Enduro
pilots trust in this advantage during tough downhills with many
obstacles. But the No Pogo’s transformation to the new wheelset
size of 27.5” was inevitably connected with a higher weight – not
very desirable for a bike which (in contrast to an Enduro) wants
to convince totally also in every uphill situation. Thus the task for
the CENTURION R&D department was to revise the chassis if
necessary and to achieve a weight reduction in the first instance.
In spite of slight sacrifices regarding braking neutrality, a supported
single-pivot rearstay basically performs as convincingly as
a VPP system while saving a perceptible amount of weight. Thus
this concept was tested as one of several options in the new No
Pogo.27 – finally with success. Because as an All-Mountain bike,
the No Pogo.27 is allowed to have slightly less braking neutrality
since it is moved less often on typical Enduro terrain. But simultaneously,
it wants to be pedalled considerably more often – mainly
in uphill direction.
The main difference between the functional concepts of the two
systems is also the eponym of the Virtual Pivot Point: The rear
wheel of a supported single-pivot construction always rotates
around the same point – thus the rearstay follows a circular path
during deflection. In contrast, a VPP system revolves around a
moving virtual pivot point whose curve can be defined by the developer.
E-Bikes
A true support
for your hobby
mo·bil·ity guar·an·tee [mə(ʊ)’bɪləti gærən’ti:]: guarantee
which […] ensures the further movement of the respective person.
Since the subject “e-bike“ entered the awareness of our society
a few years ago, much has happened: More and more people
trust in the sustainable mobility of the “supported” bikes whose
refinement is advancing constantly – a fact which, frankly speaking,
is of great delight for us! Not because CENTURION as an
experienced bike manufacturer may take benefit from this positive
development – but because we are completely convinced that it is
indisputably crucial to continue this trend and to integrate e-bikes
even stronger and stronger into our everyday life: It remains a fact
that rethinking with regard to the use of fossil fuels is utterly essential
for survival. And the more intelligently this way is followed,
the better it is for mankind and nature.
Thus CENTURION announces and presents several sophisticated
e-bike novelties also for MY 2014: Besides the completely
new E-Fire Tour, our well-proven models E-Fire and E-Co have
been revised. And the E-MTB Backfire E.29 benefits as well from
the additional innovations which are supplied by the German drivetrain
specialist Bosch for MY 2014.
The CENTURION e-bike program for the new season includes
a total of 25 pedelec variants basing on four different models.
Our R&D experts have successfully improved the already established
E-Fire Sport and the low-entry version E-Co: A new down
tube provides even more effective protection of the intelligently
integrated cables and wires while a now tapered head tube (increasing
from 1 1/8” at the top to 1.5” at the bottom) enhances
Powerful, dynamic, elegant
In MY 2014, not only the new
E-Fire Tour is an enrichment
in the range of CENTURION’s
product program of modern
pedelecs: In addition, the
drivetrain specialists at Bosch
have again improved their
already outstanding midengine
concept perceptibly.
First of all, the new drivetrain
unit clearly convinces with
even more sensitive control
electronics. Also remarkable:
Bosch now delights with a
distinctively more integrative
design.
the steerer’s stiffness. The new dropouts offer not only improved
and easier adjustment but also enable drivetrain concepts with
coaster brakes for the very first time now. In addition, the E-Fire
Sport’s innovative two-piece top tube has been modified slightly:
The clever storage compartment is now at disposal with improved
functionality. The model “Tour” is completely new as a symbiosis
of our racy E-Fire Sport and the low-entry bike E-Co: Its front
frame triangle arises from the “Sport” frame but features a (by
3 cm) shorter seat tube and a top tube which is attached in a
considerably lower position. In connection with the E-Co’s rear
section, the new E-Fire combines sportiness and comfort in a
quite impressive way.
All CENTURION pedelecs of MY 2014 (incl. the E-MTB Backfire
E.29) share the new Bosch drivetrain components. From now on,
e-bike fans can choose between the economically optimized “Active
Line” and the decidedly sporting “Performance Line”. Both
versions still feature three highly sensitive sensors. But thanks to
an upgrade (now 1000 measurements per second), these sensors
allow an even more precise adaption to the rider’s individual
demands in the new season. Due to the newly integrated transmission
at the drive pinion, the so-called chain engagement could
be reduced for the benefit of a higher reliability of the overall system.
Re-engineered accumulators and battery chargers complement
the Bosch drivetrain in MY 2014.
Classic 26“, brand-new 27.5” or successfully established 29”?
MTB riders can select between three wheelset sizes. This might
appear confusing at the very first sight only – but then a closer look
reveals many possibilities. CENTURION explains how the three aspects
“weight”, “overrun performance” and “traction/grip” define
the character of a wheelset – and which compromise a particular
biker should choose for her or his requirements.
System Comparison
26 / 27.5 / 29 Inch
+ 5 % + 12 %
Weight
Due to the fact that MTB pilots cycle on hilly or mountainous terrain,
the weight generally plays a key role. According to the laws of
physics, the wheelset has a great importance as a rotating mass
which must be accelerated again and again with each crank revolution.
Therefore: The lighter, the better. While 29” wheels are about
12 % heavier than 26” versions of comparable quality, 27.5” variants
put just about 5 % more on the scales. As a basic principle, a
26” wheel of the same quality will ever be the lightest option. But:
Already 27.5” models offer other advantages (see right) at an extra
but hardly perceptible weight. And Twentyniners convince with
benefits which are achievable neither by 26” nor by 27.5” wheels
while offsetting the additional wheelset weight under certain conditions
– depending on the field of application. The more a better
rolling performance and an increased traction/grip are required,
the more likely 29” are recommended. The more emphasis is put
on weight and acceleration, the smaller a wheelset is selected.
20
Technology
- 4 % - 6 %
Overrun Performance
If or roots or rocks or ledges: Off the paved road, an MTB rider
faces quite a number of different challenges which have to be
mastered by bike. A wheelset’s overrun performance at such obstacles
is significantly defined by its diameter and the utilized air
pressure. The rule of thumb in this case: The bigger a wheelset is,
the more “unimpressed” is its behaviour when rolling over roots
and other obstacles. And: The bigger a wheelset is, the lower is
the possible air pressure at identical rider weight. In turn, a lower
air pressure means a tyre with better flexing characteristics which
again results in a better overrun performance. If we consider the
relative angle in which the different wheelset sizes roll against and
over hindrances mentioned above, Twentyniners master this task
with remarkable -6 % in comparison to a 26” version. But already
the 27.5” wheel does achieve two thirds of this improved performance.
The more a rider favours smooth overrunning, the bigger
should be the selected wheelset standard.
Traction / Grip
The better the wheel grip, the more safety for the biker. Furthermore:
Higher grip has the effective result of higher potential
speeds – really essential for racers. Traction does play an important
role for MTB riders whose cycling terrain per se offers less
grip than e. g. asphalt and which equally involves steep uphills
and downhills. Besides the selected tyre profile, two different
aspects are important for the best possible grip qualities: The
footprint (contact area between tyre profile and surface) and the
chosen air pressure. Concerning the latter: The lower, the more
grip. At identical rider weight, Twentyniner tyres are utilized with
about 0.3 to 0.4 bar less; in the case of 27.5” versions, the air
pressure is reduced by another 0.2 bar. Thus a bigger wheelset
offers correspondent advantages. The same applies to the footprint
achieved at identical air pressure. Twentyniners range at the
top of the respective comparison: They provide a plus of 50 % as
against to 26”, but already 27.5” result in a bonus of 33 %.
Backfire Fit
Fitness for everyone
These days, “fitness” is an omnipresent term.
In our times, “being fit” seems to be more desirable
than ever. Some people even declare the
MTB as an appropriate instrument for preserving
fitness in a pleasurable way. Rightly so! But
what about those who are just standing at the
beginning of this way? All those who want to get
“fit” but are still lacking this healthy state at the
moment? Those riders who do not feel comfortable
on all too sportive bikes with speedorientated
geometry, flat cockpit and stretched
seating position?
The answer is quite simple and closer as you
might think: He – or, with pleasure, she – rides a
genuine “Fit” in form of a CENTURION Backfire
Fit. And trusts in the thoughtful engineering skills
of our complete R&D department whose leisure
time has still not begun after designing, drawing
and constructing our bikes that are made and
intended for cyclists with sportive ambitions.
But a Backfire Fit with its slightly “smoother”
character does not have to hide behind our athletically
orientated mountain bikes – definitely
no chance! This would be noticed immediately!
Because: The basic concept of our Backfire Fit
series is to enhance a mountain bike’s “wellness
factor” while preserving the sportive character.
To achieve this successfully, we have primarily
lowered the seating position: Thanks to BB
lowering by 2 cm and a somewhat flatter seat
angle, our Fit series has a gentler geometry. Together
with the slightly longer head tube, this results
in a seating position which is more upright
than that of “conventional” mountain bikes – but
still without geometric analogies to trekking or
city bikes. Desired side effect: When stopping
at traffic lights or interesting sights, the rider’s
feet are able to touch the ground always in time
and safely – another concession our developers
have made to the special genes of the Backfire
Fit series. In addition, getting in and off the saddle
is comparatively easier thanks to the stronger
top tube slope towards the seat tube.
For 2014, CENTURION offers three Backfire Fit
models – all with special geometry as already
mentioned, the 30 and 50 model even additionally
as lady variants with again lower entry concept.
way to individual fitness any more!
EVE Lady Bikes
An optimal framework
for female bikers
Women differ from men in many respects:
Their cognition and thinking as well as, consequentially,
their actions and reasoning do follow
comparatively different patterns. And not only
since yesterday, we have been knowing that also
the female anatomy has its very own structure
– although the latter seems to be basically identical
to the male version except for all obvious and
immediately perceptible differences.
But one essential aspect is shared by men and
women in an equal measure: The desire to have
fun! And when “she” or “he” rides a bike for this
purpose at the latest, it could be assumed that
both genders follow an identical way to an identical
destination. But far from it! It is a great mistake
to think that female and male cyclists are
able to enjoy the same fun on the same bikes:
An anatomically different pelvic area requires a
different seat contact to the bike while narrower
shoulders call for a correspondingly narrower
cockpit – in the best case also equipped with
brake and shifting levers optimally accessible
also by shorter fingers. All those and many other
aspects are taken into account by the CEN-
TURION EVE series. Because in our opinion, a
genuine “lady line” does not only represent female-orientated
decoration and colour concepts
but especially “framework requirements” which
are literally and consequently tailored to ladyspecific
demands. Besides the suspension elements
which are specifically adapted to a lower
pilot weight, especially the EVE MTB geometry is
a real eye-catcher: At identical frame height and
corresponding rearstay dimensions, a shorter
top tube is complemented by a comparatively
higher cockpit position. This combination does
result in a still very sportive but also slightly more
upright und thus more relaxed seating position.
In addition, the top tube bend and the BB lowering
by 5 mm provide safe ground contact for
female feet at every stop. Very down-to-earth,
isn’t it?
Our EVE MTBs also feature tyres with lower rolling
resistance, together with specifically adapted
grips and levers as well as shorter saddles with
broader rear sections. Maximum comfort + maximum
fun = 100 % CENTURION!
29er Marathon / Tour
Numinis.29
The perfect tour bike
in·ter·pre·ta·tion [ɪntɜ:prɪ’teɪʃən]: exegesis, perception, depiction. Especially in recent years, MTBs have experienced
intense further development and refinement – in perfect accordance with the ever more different and growing
demands of their riders. In earlier days, there were no discussions about wheelset sizes, suspension travels or tyre
widths. But today, MTB pilots enjoy an almost unlimited portfolio of great possibilities. As an MTB brand right from
the start and as an alpine-crossing pioneer, CENTURION knows quite well how to interpret the perfect tour bike.
MTB riders who tour low mountain ranges or the Alps are very demanding with regard to their material – and rightly
so: Their bike must definitely be light enough for uphills, has to enable smooth pedalling and must offer reliable grip
also on steep passages. Playfulness provides fun on “flowy” trails while the downhills benefit from a high directional
stability. With our Numinis.29, we have created a bike combining all those virtues in the best possible way: Due to
the essential advantages of a big-wheeled 29er, the 100 mm fully offers superior rolling qualities. Its geometry and
kinematics satisfy all demands for an equally sensitive and drivetrain-neutral bike. In 2014, the carbon models still
convince with e. g. a 12 mm thru-axle at the rear while the aluminium variants benefit from an improved cable routing
for the rear derailleur. The equally convincing setup of the Numinis.29 includes 120 mm front suspension travel, a
double or triple chainring and generously dimensioned disc brakes – actively supported by modern features such as
direct-mount derailleurs, post-mount brakes or Pressfit bottom brackets.
of front suspension forks, the chassis was by no means complete. The problem: The so-called “pogo” (annoying,
permanent deflection during pedalling) of MTBs with additional rear suspension was so unfavourable that bikers did
not care about the advantages of the system. But with the “No Pogo” concept, CENTURION as the first German
manufacturer finally created a really working kinematics in the 1990s.
Since those days, the No Pogo has been an inherent part of the CENTURION product portfolio. Nevertheless, our
timeless classic has been refined again and again. For Season 2014, our R&D experts have created another new and
great generation – this time with 27.5” tyres which are the basis for several exciting highlights. A large suspension
travel (front / rear 150 / 145 mm) and torsion-resistant, easily operable thru-axle concepts (front / rear 15 / 12 mm)
make our 2014 No Pogo a genuine downhill fun device. But at the same time, the supported single-pivot construction
offers a best possible pedalling performance. Thus the character of the current No Pogo still remembers its roots.
As a result, the 2014 version does present itself as an All-Mountain fully convincing especially during tours with high
technical demand. The modern interpretation of our timeless classic is also underlined by (mostly) internal cable routing,
a lowerable seatpost and the choice between a double or a triple chainring.
Enduro
Trailbanger
The omnipotent fun rocket
pow·er pack [paʊəʳ pæk]: machine, device etc with great power, especially a fast motor vehicle with powerful engine.
No – also in MY 2014, our Trailbanger does not need the support of a motor. But nevertheless, the 160 mm fully
does remain the “power pack” among the CENTURION bikes. Since its successful market launch, our bike for really
tough purposes has demonstrated and proved impressively that Enduro is increasingly and rightly interpreted as an
MTB category which does not exclusively focus on downhill riding any more.
Of course, also our 2014 Trailbanger is primarily a bike which convinces especially with its downhill performance –
thanks to mighty 170 mm travel at the front* and 160 mm at the rear section which absorbs any surface bumps quite
effectively. As a well-engineered quad-pivot construction with “Virtual Pivot Point” (VPP), the chassis utilizes the
available suspension travel optimally while remaining very sensitive and free of brake influences. At the same time, it
convinces the Enduro rider with superb pedalling: Even with an unlocked shock, the bobbing tendencies remain minimal.
Thus our Trailbanger is equally suitable for technically most challenging trails as well as for bike-park adventures.
New for 2014 is the optimized cable routing for the rear derailleur. Furthermore, there are well-proven configuration
elements such as thru-axles (front / rear 20 / 12 mm), a large-dimensioned braking system or a lowerable seatpost.
And with a low weight just over 14 kg**, our Trailbanger underlines its ambition to prevent its pilot virtually from sweating
also on the counter slope.
Lady Bikes
R’Bock
Youth & Kids
They are and do still remain the embodiment of
the MTB: Classic 26” bikes with all the advantages
of a robust and reliable off-roader. Also in
Season 2014, CENTURION continues the wellproven
concept of aluminium starter models and
has even given it an upgrade: The “EQ” variant
of our Backfire is excellent for city cycling and
compliant to all road traffic regulations. All versions
come along with a moderately sportive
geometry.
You are not obliged to hunt for highest athletic
laurels as soon as you ride an MTB! And especially
not if the latter is named Backfire FIT and
is specifically designed for transferring the basic
advantages of a robust 26“ off-roader to a cycling
level particularly suitable in your free time.
Due to the shorter top tube and to the lower BB
position, this hardtail is a real recommendation
for all those who want to pedal in a leisurely way.
Framework conditions specifically for ladies: The
26” and the 29” bikes of our EVE series equally
convince with a longer headtube, a lower BB position
and a special top tube geometry. But even
if “she” does not only look for any functional peculiarities:
The distinct frame decors or the lady
saddle with its intelligent adaption to the female
anatomy will surely convince “her” at the latest
that EVE comes directly from paradise.
We happily remember some events from childhood
days for our lifetime: the first soccer goal,
the first night in a summer camp, the first kiss. And
what about the first bike? Unfortunately, the first
bike is often not the right one and is thus forgotten
very soon. CENTURION has something against
that – in a double literal sense! Already our 12“
trainer bikes are designed to supply maximum joy
for children and parents.
Backfire.29
A bike for winners
win·ner [‘wɪnəʳ]: someone who has triumphed in a fight, competition etc; a victor. Not without certain pride, the
Backfire.29 starts into Season 2014: In 2012, the TEAM CENTURION VAUDE rider Markus Kaufmann became German
Marathon Champion on our Twentyniner hardtail. Furthermore in the summer of 2013, he triumphed in the
prestigious MTB stage race “BIKE Transalp” together with his team mate Jochen Kaess. Graced by these laurels, the
Backfire.29 is a recommendation for all those who are looking for a fast race hardtail or for a bike which convinces
with a sportive touring character.
The aluminium as well as the carbon versions of the Backfire.29 convince with a sportive geometry which put the
big wheels’ essential advantages into practice in the best possible way: Easier rolling over obstacles and bumps,
stronger traction/grip and increased comfort are typical Twentyniner virtues. Thanks to its tapered head tube with a
steep steering angle (70.5°)*, the Backfire.29 carries out all control orders of its pilot very directly and delights with
meticulous steering precision which pays off especially during challenging downhills. The quite stiff bottom bracket
does provide powerful propulsion while the seat stay design and the slim 27.2 mm seat post do ensure outstanding
comfort at the rear. All carbon frames trust in the 12 mm thru-axle standard for an easy as well as friction-free change
of the rear wheel. In the new season, also the “Sport” aluminium models shine with internal cable routing. New for
2014: A new fibre layup reduces the weight of our 2014 Backfire Carbon.29 by another 80 g* in comparison to the
previous model.
Backfire.27
The golden mean
new·com·er [nju:kamɐ]: someone who is new in a trade, business etc and still has not got much experience but
already a certain success. For decades, the wheelset size of 26“ has been the reference for MTB riders – followed by
the meanwhile firmly established Twentyniners. Now there is a third option: A close look at 27.5“ quickly reveals this
new standard’s possibilities.
While 26” wheels are light, stiff and agile, Twentyniners do convince with outstanding rolling characteristics. And what
about 27.5” versions? The larger rim diameter (+ 25 mm) of the latter still ranges close enough to 26” with regard to
weight and agility. But with only 38 mm less than Twentyniners, some advantages of those bigger wheels are already
perceptible. That’s why 27.5” MTBs do not represent exactly the middle between both “extremes”. But they do convince
all bikers who e. g. favour a mix of agility, accelerative power and lowest possible weight for racing but who want
to enjoy the rolling and traction benefits of bigger wheels as well.
With the Backfire.27, CENTURION introduces a representative of the new wheelset size convincing with many virtues
from the outset: For example, the carbon frame impresses with a low weight of sensational 950 g though our R&D
experts trust in internal cable routing and in the 12 mm thru-axle standard at the rear wheel. With top stiffness data
and a comfortable rearstay, the Backfire Carbon.27 is mainly designed for racers. On the other hand, the aluminium
versions make the benefits of the new wheelset standard accessible for tour and leisure-time bikers.
Backfire
The archetype
clas·sic [‘klæsɪk]: classic creation; something which has become classic. The fascinating history of the MTB
reaches back to the late 1970s. The German premiere happened in 1982 – thanks to Wolfgang Renner, the alpinecrossing
pioneer and the company founder of CENTURION. His first “genuine” MTB model named Country sounded
the bell for a great new era of cycling which has been continuing successfully until today: Classic 26” MTBs are quite
far from being outdated. Instead, their high versatility and robustness especially convince off-road beginners.
32 years after the successful introduction of the Country, our 26“ bikes of MY 2014 do offer anything necessary for
an optimal start into the fascinating MTB hobby: Light and robust aluminium frames, highly reliable components and
an excellent suspension fork at the front. The 100 mm travel of the latter are powerful enough to master challenges
beyond forest tracks and gravel roads as well. Compared to the 27.5” and Twentyniner models, the sportiness of the
geometry is slightly reduced. Therefore the Backfire is also a great recommendation for more leisurely tours. Especially
the EQ variant convinces with its eclectic configuration completely compliant to road traffic regulations: This
Backfire version is already equipped with fenders, with a kickstand and with a lighting system. Like all other 26” MTBs
of MY 2014, it rolls on studded off-road tyres and features a triple chainring for a broad gear transmission range. In
addition, the series is optionally available with disc or calliper brakes.
Backfire Fit
The fitness trainer
well·ness fac·tor [‘welnəs ‘fæktəʳ]: factor, condition etc which supports our well-being considerably. Sport is
healthy – this fact was certainly not invented by CENTURION. But we have thought about an optimal concept for combining
sport, fun and wellness. Our proposal for solution: The MTB model Backfire Fit. In contrast to its “colleagues“
among the Backfire series, the Fit model is not designed as a primarily sportive MTB for potential racing purposes.
Instead, it stands for an excellent leisure device with a built-in “fun amplifier”.
In 2014, three great Backfire Fit variants are waiting for being pedalled by you preferably off a very often too stressful
and urban daily routine. All models share a light but very robust aluminium frame with several geometric specialties:
In contrast to comparable MTB versions, the connection between top and seat tube is positioned much deeper. This
does mean that a CENTURION Backfire Fit never causes a “cramped” feeling when you have to stop e. g. spontaneously
or at traffic lights – actively supported by the lower BB position. In addition, the effective top tube length is
shorter. Together with the increased head tube length, this results in a moderately upright seating position – very
advantageous for a good overview and especially friendly to the rider’s back section. Nevertheless, their configuration
characterizes all Backfire Fit models as “genuine” MTBs: Studded 26” off-road tyres, an 80 mm suspension fork and
a triple drivetrain with broad gear transmission ratio do get the fun rolling.
Lady Bikes
EVE
More than just beautiful
ladies’ choice [‘leɪdi:z tʃɔɪs]: a lady’s verbal invitation to dance with a gentleman. This friendly invitation is happily
accepted by the attractive bikes of our EVE series. Because since CENTURION has decided to equip biking ladies
with their own models which provide a specific geometry and individual designs, high cycling fun and long-term
reliability are their permanent tour companions. With regard to ladies’ choice in MY 2014, CENTURION does trust in
26” as well as in Twentyniner MTBs.
At the very first sight, the decorative colour scheme distinguishes the EVE series from the rest of our MTB program.
But at the same time, the eye of the beholder is mainly caught by the geometry especially modified for sporty ladies:
The effectively slightly shorter top tube length does not only ensure a central seating position and thus best possible
handling control – simultaneously, it is attached to the seat tube at a considerably lower point. Together with the top
tube’s sloping shape, the standover height is reduced for more safety. Among the other lady-specific wellness features
is e. g. the saddle whose design fits the female anatomy essentially better than a unisex model.
Depending on the preferred field of application, CENTURION ladies can choose between either calliper or disc brakes
as well as between 26“ or Twentyniner tyres. All EVE models feature an MTB-specific configuration and a 100 mm
suspension fork at the front. In this way, superb comfort and always reliable downhill safety also off the paved road
are guaranteed.
Youth & Kids
R’Bock
The first step is always easy
foun·da·tion [faʊn’deɪʃən]: (intellectual) groundwork, basis. At CENTURION, the development and the launch of
a new bike join many of the most different professions: For example, engineers meet designers; product managers
meet marketing experts; and distribution staff talk to sales representatives. As to bikes for kids, all of these CENTU-
RION people share one important aspect: They are parents themselves and thus know very well how good bikes for
young ones must be.
No matter if you are an enthused biker yourself and you want to familiarize your child with this great hobby – or if she/
he has discovered this excellent idea all by her-/himself or has got in touch with it via some friends at school: The right
start is always essential. Of course, you as the parents do want to ensure that the investment “bicycle” (which occurs
periodically while a child grows up) does not cause disproportionate costs. But reliable quality pays off in the long run
– not only because the right bicycle does actually satisfy the demands of young “pedal knights”: It also encourages
cycling fun and therefore the prospect of the lifelong hobby “biking”.
The CENTURION product range for kids and youngsters already begins with a trainer bike lacking pedals: Our R’Bock
12 Walk is robust enough for your kid and light enough to be carried by you. At the other end of the scale, there is the
R’Bock Ultimate 24 Race – a “genuine” MTB with suspension fork, calliper brakes and full suitability for competing.
And between: Many fascinating CENTURION bikes. Have fun with growing along!
Sportive, puristic,
They are our SUVs – but these “Sports Utility Vehicles”
are powered by your muscular strength!
Their versatility in everyday life is comparable:
Profiled and smoothly rolling tyres master asphalt
and rough gravel roads with equal ease.
Thanks to the 50 mm suspension fork, you are
also enabled to do some athletic cycling. And
last not least, our Cross Line is complemented
by the optional installation of fenders, of a carrier
and of a kickstand.
■ Front suspension travel: 50 mm
■ Suspension fork lockable* (some models:
The training device for road racers – with literally
identical “framework conditions”! A Cyclo Cross
is the optimal symbiosis for bikers with athletic
ambitions in everyday life: It does combine
a road handlebar, a sportive transmission ratio
and a propulsion-orientated geometry with the
option to install fenders. Although surely suitable
for racing purposes as well, our Crossers are superb
training partners in the first instance.
We are not going to change the fact that Cross
Speed models are CENTURION road bikes with
linear handlebar. Although the configuration includes
32 mm tyres with higher suitability for
everyday use, a Cross Speed represents acceleration
with its sportive geometry and is therefore
a special recommendation for commuters.
Fenders and a carrier can be installed for this
demanding purpose. Further, there are several
drivetrain options.
■ Light aluminium frame manufactured
in high quality
■ “Tapered Steerer“ (increase: 1 1/8“–1.5“)
■ 27.2 mm seat post with comfortable flex
■ Slightly profiled 32 mm tyres
■ 3 x 9, 3 x 10 or 2 x 10 Shimano drivetrain
■ Light calliper brakes
■ Prepared for fender and carrier installation
■ Available with a carbon fork*
Real classic understatement looks exactly like
this: A City Speed is reduced to a bike’s essentials
and demonstrates its pilot’s attitude
at the very first sight: pure urban cycling fun.
No matter if a single-speed variant (optionally
with freewheel or “fixie” configuration) or a version
with 8-speed gear hub: Our City Speed
comes along with just all the necessary basics
for mastering the city. The City Speed 8 is also
available as a lady-specific model.
Cross
Cross Line
The journey is the reward
pio·neer [paɪə’nɪəʳ]: someone who creates the preconditions for something by her/his thinking, acting etc. Our
modern world keeps on specializing: More and more purposeful questions are asked and answered in more and more
matching detail. At the same time, it may be that the “big picture” seems to be blurred by a flood of particulars. But
yet also very generally, excellent preconditions for forging ahead can be created – particularly with regard to cycling.
Thanks to its universal character, our Cross Line supplies an optimal platform for all those pedalists who want to
experience a lot of different adventures on one single bike.
Each Cross Line model is based on a light but nevertheless very robust and reliable aluminium frame with quite a few
important details: The complete series is prepared for getting fit out with fenders and a carrier – but of course without
losing its sportive character. In MY 2014, even two model versions (Cross Line 100 EQ and 600 EQ) are offered
ex works as trekking bikes fully equipped with fenders, carrier, kickstand and a lighting system (incl. hub dynamo)
which is in accordance with road traffic regulations. And the two of them are also available as lady-specific low-entry
variants. A Cross Line’s comprehensive suitability for everyday use is a real result of the sportive configuration as
well: Thanks to the profiled but all the same smoothly rolling 28” tyres, the lockable* 50 mm suspension fork and the
powerful disc brakes*, this CENTURION representative always cuts a good figure on and off the paved road.
Cyclo Cross
The versatile all-rounder
jack-of-all-trades [ʤæk ɒv ɔ:l treɪdz]: someone who is adored for her/his many different talents. Also in MY 2014, the
CENTURION Cyclo Cross still remains our “jack-of-all-trades” – quite a mix of a downright sportive character, of a general
qualification for racing purposes and of an apt configuration which offers great suitability for everyday use. Thus a Cyclo
Cross is much more than just a bike: Among the CENTURION lineup, it does represent the active athlete who wants to
enjoy convincing propulsion also outside the training.
Originally, cyclo-cross bikes were designed as winter training devices for highly motivated road racers. In later days, this
innovation was refined and so became an own competitive bike discipline. That’s why cyclo-crossers and road bikes still
share e. g. their sportive geometries, their wheelset sizes, their visual appearances and their typical curved road handlebars.
But in the course of time, it became obvious that a cyclo-crosser can convince also beyond training and racing:
Today, this bike category is contemporarily available with modern, powerful and reliable disc brakes which are not at all
affected by any weather conditions, especially wet ones. All together, it offers maximum riding fun to all those cyclists
who are looking for the best possible combination of speed and suitability for whatever everyday use. On all CENTURI-
ON Cyclo Cross models, you can trust in sportive double drivetrains and mechanical disc brakes with low maintenance
requirements. Fenders and a carrier can be installed as well.
Cross Speed
Forwards with full power
al·ter·na·tive [ɔ:l’tɜ:nətɪv]: second, other option; possibility to choose between two or more things. It is not that you
weren’t able to decide in favour of a certain bike – but here is an idea! Because as a “road machine with linear handlebar”,
a Cross Speed is exactly the right CENTURION for all riders who want be sure that a road racer’s sportive and
agile propulsion is combined with the comfortable overview of a fitness bike. A slightly more upright geometry plus
basically broader tyres with therefore specifically higher suitability for everyday use recommend this bike category
also for daily commuting. Thanks to optional fender and carrier installation, the already enormous band width of a
Cross Speed is additionally expanded by the factors “transport options” and “all-weather suitability”.
For Season 2014, CENTURION still trusts in the utilization of light, reliable and elaborately shaped aluminium frames.
Due to its “Tapered Steerer” (increasing from 1 1/8” at the top to 1.5” at the bottom), our Cross Speed delights with
direct steering control and great tracking stability. Further, this series convinces with a wide selection of alternative
configurations: Besides various lady-specific models, there are three drivetrain options as well as the possibility to
select a carbon or an aluminium fork – depending on your personal interpretation of a Cross Speed’s desired sportiness.
And it is almost obvious that this bike’s sportive demand has been taken into account by our designers also in
a visual way.
Urban
City Speed
King of the city
town twin·ning [taʊn ‘twɪnɪŋ]: partnership between administrative districts or municipalities (especially cities) in
different countries. Who says that only towns and cities can enter into relationships? How about you starting a friendly
connection to your city yourself? On the adequate bike: definitely no problem at all! Also in Season 2014, CENTURION
has saddled the right horse for modern urban knights: the City Speed. These models are designed as an intentional
concentration on the essential and bring along anything which is necessary for daily rides through the city.
Most notably, the model City Speed 1 proves a truly puristic feeling for cyclists: This 1-speed bike is optionally operable
with freewheel configuration or – thanks to the flip-flop hub – as a “fixie”. At the same time, it lacks everything which
could cause trouble: There are neither front nor rear derailleurs – just two pedals and the pilot’s power. For maximum
safety in road traffic, our City Speed 1 features strong calliper brakes at the front as well as at the rear. In addition,
mounting points for fenders, for a carrier and for a kickstand underline our single-speeder’s demand to be also really
useful and not just a “state-of-the-art” creation. The same applies to the model versions City Speed 8 respectively 8
Lady. The 8-speed gear hub of these bikes expands their application range from flat to hilly terrain without giving evidence
for a shifting system at the very first sight. Furthermore, all CENTURION City Speed variants trust in a light and
reliable aluminium frame plus comfortable 32 mm tyres.
Gigadrive / Hyperdrive
Faster, longer, further
sport idol [spɔ:t ‘aɪdəl]: an athlete who is admired for her/his outstanding achievements. We admit that we take
a certain pride in our new Gigadrive of MY 2014. Because from the first drawing to the last decor, this new carbon
rocket has been outlined, developed and designed completely at our premises – and thus is a CENTURION from the
first down to the very last fibre. No wonder that it reveals its origin already at first sight: Its “Tapered Steerer” leads the
Gigadrive with highly reliable tracking precision unerringly forwards. The slim frame with its filigree rearstay underlines
the sportive demand of the new and fully UCI-compliant carbon racer.
The new development of the Gigadrive was especially focused on the modern mix of top stiffness data (for maximum
power transfer) and of enough comfort (especially when coping with long distances). For instance, the bottom bracket
is remarkably stiff to transfer each of the pilot’s “leg watts” onto the road quite effectively. And at the same time, the
slim design of the seat post as well as of the seat and the chain stays do result in an excellent flex for the complete
rearstay construction. Therefore the new Gigadrive is a top recommendation for fast short distances as well as for
many epic touring hours. With suitability for electric shifting groups plus internal routing of cables and wires, this
CENTURION does prove its sense for future-oriented conceptual design. The latter also applies to the utilization of the
new 11-speed drivetrain which is as well a part of the aluminium model Hyperdrive (otherwise unchanged for 2014).
E-Bikes
Trend-setting
sign·post [saɪn’pəʊst]: (arrow-shaped) sign indicating which way or road leads to a certain destination. Fortunately,
not a single one of our four e-bike models for Season 2014 does share any visual similarities with a road sign.
Nevertheless, the CENTURION pedelecs Backfire E.29, E-Fire Sport and E-Co as well as the brand-new E-Fire Tour
are genuine signposts towards future cycling: These four electric CENTURION bikes so cover a comprehensive range
beginning with a classic low-entry model on to sportive variants with touring suitability and up to a Twentyniner MTB.
Therefore they do represent the complete band width of adequate application areas for modern e-bikes.
Also in 2014, we completely rely on the technology of drivetrain specialist Bosch for all models. The re-engineered
Bosch middle-engine concept still features three highly sensitive sensors. But now, 1000 measurements per second
ensure an even better analysis and thus an even better adaption to the pilot’s demands. The “Active Line” is
excellently suitable for e-bike fans who want to pedal as economically as possible while the “Performance Line” has
a pointedly sportive character. And the rider may choose between newly designed accumulators with 300 or 400
Wh. At the top end, the new CENTURION pedelec program is rounded up by special DX models with a convincing
high-end configuration.
For detailed information about further innovations in MY 2014 (e. g. revised frame tubes, improved dropouts or the
modified integration of the Bosch engine), please have a look at our e-bike catalogue which is available separately at
your authorized CENTURION retailer.
for tours and every day
The adequate outfit for every occasion: For Season 2014, we have reissued our bike-wear program and do now
present new designs which match our bikes of the current model year. In addition, CENTURION fans are delighted by
quite a few accessories which enable them to take along the red “C” anywhere in their leisure time as well.
1 Long-sleeved jersey “Nizza”
Warm “Nortex Warm” fabric (200 g / m², 100 % polyester). Premium quality for the cold season, pleasantly skinfriendly
and roughened on the inside. Stays warm and dry also during extreme physical efforts. Full-length front
zipper, three back pockets, useful additional zipper pocket. Sizes: S – XXL
2 Short-sleeved jersey “Nizza“
Highly elastic “Interlock“ fabric (120 g / m², 100 % polyester). Premium wearing comfort due to optimal breathability
even during extreme physical exercise at high temperatures. Full-length front zipper, three back pockets, useful additional
zipper pocket. Sizes: S – XXL
3 Windproof vest “Nizza“
Ultra-light microfibre vest consisting of cutting-edge “Sushi” fabric (85 g / m², 100 % polyester microfibres). The small
pack size and the low weight make this vest an optimal companion in the jersey pocket. With mesh back (90 g / m²,
100 % polyester) and three back pockets. Sizes: S – XXL
4 Bib shorts “Spider“
Super-smooth “Lycra Power” fabric (210 g / m², 80 % polyester, 20 % spandex). The new “Lucky” seat pad does satisfy
even highest demands with regard to seating comfort: It is seamlessly manufactured from elastic microfibre fabric
(170 g / m², 82 % polyamid, 18 % spandex) and includes two different padding areas. Broad elastic hems prevent
slipping but do not restrict the legs. Sizes: S – XXL
The Ziller Valley
A top spot for bikers
and the health-conscious
well-be·ing [wel ‘bi:ɪŋ]: ggood physical and mental condition.
“A healthy mind in a healthy body” (lat. “mens sana in corpore
sano”) – this idea which was already well-known in Roman times
is reliably confirmed with every visit in the Ziller Valley (Tyrol, Austria)
in a pleasantly modern way. Since years, this partner region
of CENTURION has especially been proving itself as an eldorado
for bikers: Its options range from health-promoting tours on the
broad valley floor and varied MTB trips along idyllic forest roads
with amazing views up to technically demanding “trail hunts”
downhill from one of the many peaks. Therefore the Ziller Valley
does offer really everything which makes cyclists completely
happy.
By now, a bike and MTB trail system (more than 800 km) which
is superbly signposted passes through the region between the
Hintertux Glacier and the town of Strass at the valley entrance.
The Ziller Valley’s strength is its character: With a constant altitude
level (550–650 m above sea level) and an average of about ten sun
hours per day, the unique broad valley floor offers ideal conditions
for families and visitors seeking recreation. At the same time, MTB
riders are attracted by the mountain world along the valley borders.
Countless 3.000-metre peaks grace the view while a total
of seven summer cable cars shuttles bikers towards the summits
where from they can start their downhill adventures in the middle
of a wonderful panorama. Ideally, the “personal accumulator” is
charged en route in one of the 152 culinary destinations serving
typical regional delicacies. Speaking of accumulators: Also e-bike
fans get their money’s worth completely in the Ziller Valley – parti-
128
Partner
* lat.: „Mens sana in corpore sano.“
cularly the “Genusstour“ (“Indulgence Tour“) is extremely popular.
In cooperation with CENTURION, you are able to enjoy one- or
two-day tours (e. g. on a Backfire E.29) visiting the Top Three
mountain huts named Kristallhütte, Wedelhütte and Platzlalm. En
route, biking on health-promoting altitude levels is combined with
exclusive culinary indulgence. Along the way, the breathtaking
panorama of the Ziller Valley and the Tux Alps acts as an effective
motivation booster for mastering the altitude difference.
There is also an incomporable range of options for all those who
do not want to rely on the support of an electric engine but visit
the region with highest athletic ambitions instead: Every year, the
three-day “Ziller Valley Bike Challenge” with its unique finish at the
Tuxer Fernerhaus (2.600 m above sea level) attracts about 400
riders from more than 15 different nations. In the toughest competition
category “King / Queen of the Mountain”, the participants
tackle a total of about 200 km and an altitude difference of 10.000
m. But thanks to “Prince / Princess”, “Lord / Lady” and “Conquerer
/ Conqueress”, the unique racing experience can be eased
moderately and alternatively as well: In some of these categories,
cable cars support the fight for collecting altitude metres.
The Black Forest
The activity paradise in the
south-west of Germany
di·ver·si·fied (adj.) [daɪ’vɜ:sɪfaɪd]: full of variety; not monotonous.
No doubt: As Germany’s highest and largest low
mountain range, the Black Forest does not know any monotony.
About 150 km long (from north to south) and up to 40
km wide, this dreamy area in the south-west of Baden-Wuerttemberg
offers numerous options especially for guests who
prefer sportive activities: For example, bikers can pedal leisurely
through the flat Rhine River plain or master tough altitude
differences while tackling one of the six elevations above 1.400
m. By now, more than 8.500 km of signposted MTB trails want
to be explored on off-road wheels. Road racers are delighted
by numerous back roads leading through quaint valleys or
uphill to demanding summits. In addition, fans of slim tyres are
awaited by many sportive challenges such as the “Black Forest
Ultra Bike Marathon” (Schwarzwald Ultra Radmarathon,
SURM; www.surm.de) with single distances up to 230 km and
an altitude difference of 4070 m – all in all enough reasons for
the fact that CENTURION has been cooperating with the Black
Forest region for many years.
During the “Bike X-ing Schwarzwald” (450 km, altitude difference
more than 16.000 m), MTB riders can pedal through the
Black Forest on excellently marked trails between the towns of
Pforzheim and Bad Saeckingen. En route, they cross almost
the whole of the Black Forest and have the possibility to combine
various options while being guided by perfectly reliable
signposts everywhere. Further plus factors: None of the route
sections violates local forest or way-leave regulations while
numerous gastronomic and touristic facilities cater for the de-
130
mands of MTB riders nearby (for additional information, please
visit www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info/Entdecken/Rad-und-
MTB/Mountainbike/bike-crossing-schwarzwald). Or do you
even favour an organized stage race through the Black Forest?
Here you are: The meanwhile ninth “VAUDE Trans Schwarzwald”
with again new routing (this time: Pforzheim–Offenburg)
is going to start in the middle of August 2014. The more than
400 km course over an altitude difference of almost 10.000 m
will not only push leisure-time bikers to their limits and beyond
but will also lure different pro teams to the starting lines of
the five legs (for information and registration, please visit www.
trans-schwarzwald.com). Besides adequate training activities
(e. g. training camps or organized weekend events), special
courses focussing on MTB riding techniques are considered
as optimal preparation for a challenge of this kind. The full program
is offered by the professional organizer “beiTune” whose
courses and tours are gladly supported by CENTURION.
But a visit to the Black Forest can of course also be enjoyed
maximally without highest athletic ambitions: Touring in
the twelve Black Forest regions with pedelec rental, e-bikers
are able to recharge and change their accumulators at one of
the momentarily more than 200 charging stations (for further
details, please visit www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info/Entdecken/Rad-und-MTB/e-bike).
Fortunately, this saves enough
time for a slice of fresh Black Forest gateau as well…
Hubert Schwarz
”Only someone who does move will
move something!”
This man is becoming a living legend: Hubert
Schwarz is an extreme athlete, author, motivator,
life coach and socially dedicated model partner
at the same time. For many years, CENTURION
has been supporting the charming Franconian
and his team whenever the subject “biking” comes
into focus. Regarding this, there has been,
is and will be a lot – especially in 2014, when
Hubert Schwarz is going to celebrate his 60th
birthday.
And you can hardly believe that he runs – in addition
to all his athletic activities – also an activity
centre in the Franconian town of Buechenbach
together with his wife Renate.
People who lack a certain own motivation are
coached and supported by the centre. No matter
if nutrition and health seminars, company
incentives, sport events or motivating lectures:
The team of the Hubert Schwarz Centre offers
all kinds of answers on how to pick up momentum
in one’s own life (again). The initiator of the
idea “Moving People” is himself the best example
for the fact that a healthy dose of motivation
can move a lot: His “Training Round” on road
bikes was the role model for the 400 km roadracing
event “Classic 400”. In addition, Hubert
Schwarz takes part in different athletic challenges
again and again (e. g. together with Joey
Kelly). And above all he is fascinated especially
by one special event: The legendary 5.000 km
“Race Across America” (RAAM; www.raceacrossamerica.org)
running nonstop from the west
coast to the east coast of the USA. In 2014,
Hubert Schwarz and three team mates set their
sights on for a new world record in the age category
60+.
In 2014, also the meanwhile legendary “beneflizz“
biking event in the context of the RTL Charity
Marathon will again be supported by CEN-
TURION. So far, Hubert Schwarz has been able
to collect more than € 200.000 in this “cycling”
way. We too want so say thank you – and keep
on moving!
Ambitioned bike athletes do like to think back:
In 1987 and 1988, Reimund Dietzen (pro rider at
that time) achieved Rank Two at the Vuelta a España
respectively after he had become German
Road Champion for several times. Cycling veteran
Uli Rottler is also remembered for numerous
German National Titles and not only by bike fans
from Baden for winning the Road World Championship
Masters in 2011. “Dietzen and Rottler“
team up as (shortened) “DiRo”, the bike holiday
specialist for the Mediterranean region Catalonia
in the north of Spain. And in 2013, the team of
experienced DiRo guides has additionally been
extended by CENTURION brand ambassador
Udo Boelts. This is another excellent reason
for ambitioned road-racing enthusiasts to book
their training camp with this company.
For Season 2014, a total of 80 rental bikes (40
aluminium and 40 carbon models respectively)
is available. Already from only € 90 per week,
these racers recommend themselves as optimum
sport devices for extensive tours e. g.
through the Catalonian hinterland or along the
idyllic Costa Daurada. Directly in the heart of
Cambrils and about 300 m behind the beach,
DiRo is based in the four-star hotel “Tryp Port”
built as recently as 2002. For 2014, a total of
three terms is put at guests’ disposal; the tours
are offered for six different performance levels.
Europe’s Number One
Seeberger
Quality based on tradition
When pioneers work together, the result is inevitably excellent. That’s why CEN-
TURION has already decided many years ago to cooperate with Bicycle Holidays
Max Huerzeler and to equip Europe’s leading provider of bike vacations. From the
upcoming Season 2014 on, a total of 1.800 CENTURION bikes will be available
for rent at the twelve Huerzeler locations on Majorca, in Andalusia and in the Ziller
Valley – absolutely perfect preconditions for a training camp or relaxed high-quality
bike holidays. Road-racing customers enjoy the exquisite option to ride one of the
Huerzeler special editions of our carbon model Gigadrive.
Already for nearly 30 years now, Bicycle Holidays Max Huerzeler has been a synonym
for perfectly organized bike tours led by experienced guides. What began
as the favourite training spot of Max Huerzeler (former World Champion in motorpaced
cycling) has become the hub of his offer for biking enthusiasts: On Majorca
alone, the Swiss company by now operates a total of ten locations. Together with
the guests of the two additional places in Chiclana (Andalusia) and Mayrhofen (Ziller
Valley), about 30.000 customers per year do trust in the great experience of the
bike-holiday specialist. International tours in e. g. Thailand, Argentina, Cuba or the
USA are also available.
From 1844 on, Seeberger has been standing for premium-quality
nuts and fruits and classy coffees. Well, the partnership between
the family-run company from the city of Ulm and CENTURION
has been a bit shorter – but all the same equally superior: Whenever
CENTURION appears in shows or events, our team members
and guests enjoy the great variety of Seeberger snacks from the
very best of nature. Also decisive for us: Seeberger trusts in a demonstrably
sustainable production of high ecological and social
standards.
Fortunately, cycling is more than just a trend. In contrast, the adequate
outfits produced by CENTURION’s equipment partner Vaude
are definitely trendy and presented each new season for bikers
of virtually all kinds. In 1974, the company was founded by the von
Dewitz family (“vD” = “Vaude”) in Tettnang, (Upper Swabia); since
2009, it has been managed by Antje von Dewitz. Already at an
early point of time, Vaude has trusted in sustainability and responsible
production. Until today, this dedication has been rewarded
with several awards and prizes.
Gigadrive Disc
A new era begins
Road bikes represent pure fascinating velocity. Their construction is reduced to the essentials while their riders
do consider themselves as real purists. Is it allowed to revise a well-proven system completely at essential points? Is it
allowed to intervene in this filigree piece of art? We are convinced: Yes, it is. And in the case of disc-brake utilization,
it even is a must.
It took many years until disc brakes became established in the MTB sector – today, they are standard especially in the
high-end segment. Their benefits are too convincing, their performance is too powerful. And by now, the modern brake
technology has also entered the cyclo-cross world: Since 2010, disc brakes for cyclo-cross racing have officially
been authorized by the International Cycling Union (Union Cycliste Internationale; UCI). So why not for road machines
as well? “Because they are too heavy”, opponents will say. And because they might cause friction, because they look
unfamiliar etc… And? Disc brakes do not only convince with a considerably higher performance (especially in wet
conditions): They also take the safety-relevant component “rim” as a wearing part out of the calculation. They enable
exciting rim designs. They allow the use of lighter inner tubes. They simplify the realization of tubeless concepts etc.
And? A road bike with disc brakes can look truly fascinating. Here is the Gigadrive Disc. Coming 2014.
Thank you
”Everything will be alright in the end. If it is not, then it is
not the end.” (Oscar Wilde, 1854-1900)
Quite a few literary comparisons might be drawn when we pass
the production process of the 2014 CENTURION catalogue in review.
So for instance: “Rome was not built in a day“ or “All that
glitters is not gold”. But because we are (once again) proud of
what has become “our baby” for MY 2014, we have decided for
the good end of an again exciting production – whose success
resulted, as it has always done, from the dedication of quite a lot
of extraordinarily motivated people.
Besides the obligatory praise of ourselves for the conceptualization,
layouting, planning and realization with regard to the contents
of “CENTURION Bikes 2014”, we do especially thank Daniel
Geiger (www.danielgeiger.net): His successful mix of professionalism,
experience, exceptional dedication and a pinch of “intuitive
thinking at the right moment” has again resulted in excellent
photos.
Though our bikes did not only cut a good figure outdoors alongside
with models (who also deserve our gratitude): They too had
to be put into the right indoors perspective for precise close-ups.
Regarding this, a big thanks goes to Olaf Nagel (www.nagel-photodesign.de)
who has already often had to work under less difficult
conditions for sure… Thank you, Markus Mittner (www.kontrastplus.net),
for the final picture editing and so for our catalogue’s
“visual fine tuning“! And not least, a reliable printing company is
necessary to ensure that the precious piece is not only published
digitally but also that your hands can feel its weight – many
thanks, BluePrint AG (www.blueprint.de)!
During the photo shootings, we were kindly supported by the
Schwarzwald Tourismus GmbH and by the Zillertal Tourismus
GmbH – thank you for the excellent assistance on location! Our
models were kept warm and dry by Vaude Bikewear; their precious
heads and eyes were protected with the help of Alpina.
Great thanks for this as well!
And our very special thanks goes to Inge and Herbert this year –
thank you for your special contribution which was so superb! As
you can see: it was worth it!
