INTRODUCTION<br />

Bacteria <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>ors, <strong>in</strong>stead of p<strong>at</strong>hogenic organisms,<br />

are used to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> possible presence<br />

of disease-caus<strong>in</strong>g organisms derived from <strong>fecal</strong> pollution.<br />

Indic<strong>at</strong>or bacteria such as total coliform<br />

(TC), <strong>fecal</strong> coliform (FC), <strong>and</strong> <strong>fecal</strong> <strong>streptococcus</strong><br />

(FS) are used because of <strong>the</strong> laborious technique<br />

<strong>and</strong> expensive equipment required to isol<strong>at</strong>e p<strong>at</strong>hogenic<br />

organisms from w<strong>at</strong>er. The presence of coliform<br />

bacteria <strong>in</strong> a w<strong>at</strong>er is generally regarded as<br />

evidence of pollution by warm-blooded animals.<br />

The use of TC as a measure of <strong>the</strong> <strong>fecal</strong> contam<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of lakes <strong>and</strong> streams has been <strong>in</strong> practice for<br />

almost six decades. The total coliform <strong>in</strong>cludes a<br />

group of heterotrophic bacteria, many of which<br />

have little <strong>in</strong> common with each o<strong>the</strong>r except th<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>y are always present <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>al tract of<br />

humans <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r warm-blooded animals. Thus,<br />

<strong>the</strong> occurrence <strong>and</strong> densities of <strong>the</strong> TC bacteria<br />

have been useful <strong>in</strong> assess<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sanitary conditions<br />

of w<strong>at</strong>er. The absence of TC is evidence of<br />

a bacteriologically safe w<strong>at</strong>er, not necessarily safe<br />

from virus.<br />

Several stra<strong>in</strong>s of TC do not orig<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>e from <strong>fecal</strong><br />

m<strong>at</strong>ter <strong>and</strong> are of soil orig<strong>in</strong>. This confuses <strong>the</strong> use<br />

of TC as a w<strong>at</strong>er quality <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>or. Several years<br />

ago, <strong>the</strong> <strong>fecal</strong> coliform, a subgroup of <strong>the</strong> total coliform<br />

bacteria, was <strong>in</strong>troduced as an <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>or of<br />

pollution from warm-blooded animal feces. This is<br />

a more precise bacteriological tool for assess<strong>in</strong>g<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er quality. The Ill<strong>in</strong>ois Pollution Control Board 1<br />

had adopted rules requir<strong>in</strong>g adherence to certa<strong>in</strong><br />

limit<strong>at</strong>ions on bacterial quality <strong>in</strong> w<strong>at</strong>ers based on<br />

FC densities.<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> drawbacks of us<strong>in</strong>g FC is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ability<br />

to dist<strong>in</strong>guish between human <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r warmblooded<br />

animal sources. Geldreich et al. 2 first proposed<br />

<strong>the</strong> use of an FC to FS r<strong>at</strong>io as a more valuable<br />

tool for assess<strong>in</strong>g pollution sources than <strong>the</strong><br />

sole use of FC densities. Their f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs 24 showed<br />

th<strong>at</strong> FS densities were significantly higher than FC<br />

<strong>in</strong> all warm-blooded animal feces exam<strong>in</strong>ed except<br />

th<strong>at</strong> of humans. The applic<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong>se f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

with<strong>in</strong> limits, permits <strong>the</strong> use of FS densities as a<br />

method for differenti<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g sources of bacterial pollution<br />

<strong>in</strong> surface w<strong>at</strong>ers.<br />

FS tests are commonly used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sanitary analysis<br />

of w<strong>at</strong>er supplies <strong>in</strong> European countries. In <strong>the</strong><br />

United St<strong>at</strong>es, TC, FC, <strong>and</strong> FS have all been used<br />

as pollution <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>ors <strong>at</strong> various times. 5,6 Correl<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

between coliforms <strong>and</strong> p<strong>at</strong>hogenic bacteria<br />

have been studied by many <strong>in</strong>vestig<strong>at</strong>ors. There is<br />

little evidence th<strong>at</strong> enteroviral or o<strong>the</strong>r microbial<br />

diseases are transmitted frequently by <strong>the</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er route <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence of coliforms. 7 Unfortun<strong>at</strong>ely,<br />

bacterial <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>ors are generally not reliable<br />

<strong>in</strong>dexes for viruses. The absence of <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>ors<br />

does not assure th<strong>at</strong> viruses are also absent. Until a<br />

good altern<strong>at</strong>ive is discovered, <strong>the</strong> use of TC for<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er supplies <strong>and</strong> FC <strong>and</strong> FS for sewage <strong>and</strong> stream<br />

quality as <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>ors of enteric pollution is valid.<br />

The bacterial popul<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> a n<strong>at</strong>ural w<strong>at</strong>erway<br />

is <strong>in</strong>fluenced by many factors <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g human activities<br />

<strong>and</strong> biological, physical, <strong>and</strong> chemical characteristics<br />

of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er. Recently <strong>the</strong> development<br />

of ma<strong>the</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ical models for describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> various<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er quality parameters has been encouraged.<br />

Several models rel<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g to coliform density <strong>in</strong><br />

streams have been proposed.<br />

About five decades ago, bacteriological studies<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Ill<strong>in</strong>ois <strong>River</strong> were made by Greenfield 8 for<br />

about 80 miles (130 km) from LaSalle to K<strong>in</strong>gston<br />

M<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> by Hosk<strong>in</strong>s et al. 9 for approxim<strong>at</strong>ely<br />

300 miles (480 km), <strong>the</strong> whole length of <strong>the</strong> river.<br />

The St<strong>at</strong>e W<strong>at</strong>er Survey performed weekly st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

pl<strong>at</strong>e counts <strong>and</strong> some coliform tests on samples<br />

collected from <strong>the</strong> Ill<strong>in</strong>ois <strong>River</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Peoria</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

period from January 1959 to September 1962.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> summer of 1971, an <strong>in</strong>vestig<strong>at</strong>ion to<br />

def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> waste assimil<strong>at</strong>ive capacity of <strong>the</strong> Upper<br />

Ill<strong>in</strong>ois W<strong>at</strong>erway was undertaken by <strong>the</strong> St<strong>at</strong>e W<strong>at</strong>er<br />

Survey. As a part of <strong>the</strong> study, about 150 w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

samples were exam<strong>in</strong>ed for TC <strong>and</strong> FC <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>erway<br />

<strong>at</strong> 19 river st<strong>at</strong>ions from Lockport to Chillico<strong>the</strong>,<br />

a distance of about 113 miles (182 km). The<br />

results have been reported elsewhere. 10,11<br />

Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g on October 31, 1966, weekly samples<br />

of Ill<strong>in</strong>ois <strong>River</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>at</strong> <strong>Peoria</strong> were collected <strong>and</strong><br />

analyzed for 17 physical <strong>and</strong> chemical parameters.<br />

Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> June 1971, bacterial exam<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ions<br />

were made for TC <strong>and</strong> FC densities <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> June<br />

1972 for FS determ<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ion. The results of physical<br />

<strong>and</strong> chemical analyses for 1967-1972 have been<br />

summarized by Koth<strong>and</strong>araman <strong>and</strong> S<strong>in</strong>clair. 12<br />

This study deals pr<strong>in</strong>cipally with bacterial d<strong>at</strong>a<br />

developed dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> period June 1971 to May<br />

1976. The sampl<strong>in</strong>g program is be<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ued.<br />
