ALIPRE ®
Calcium Sulfoaluminates

Innovation and Environment
Introduction
ALIPRE ® is Italcementi brand for its Calcium Sulfoaluminate clinker (CSA) based
binders, to be used in high performance cement systems. It is available as straight
CSA, namely ALIPRE ® , or blended with high quality Anhydrite, that is ALIPRE ®
CEMENT. The former is delivered in bulk or one ton big bags, whereas the latter
in bulk, one ton big bags or 25 kg bags, according to local availability.
Depending on the technical requirements and the applications of the final products,
ALIPRE ® can be used as main component or as secondary constituent to adjust
workability time, setting time and mechanical strength and achieve special products
performances such as rapid setting, high early strength, increased sulfate resistance
and shrinkage compensation.
Sustainable Development
ALIPRE ® is the result of advanced research combined with the latest state of the
art production processes as well as a sophisticated quality control system,
representing an example of a highly technical product, which has a minor impact
on the environment. Its production cycle has levels of CO 2
emission, fuel and
electricity consumption for the burning and grinding phases lower than those
required for the production of ordinary Portland clinker.
Society
LOW CO 2
EMISSIONS
Economy
Environment
In recognition of its longstanding commitment to sustainability, Italcementi
has been admitted to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, tracking the
performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide out of
the 2,500 international Companies in the Dow Jones Global indexes.
The evaluation is carried out on the basis of economic, environmental, and
social criteria. Of the Italian Companies listed in this prestigious sustainability
rating, Italcementi is currently the only construction Company.
ALIPRE
ALIPRE ® is a ground sulfoaluminate-belite clinker, which main phases are: Calcium Sulfoaluminate, Belite and
Calcium Sulfate.
Mineralogical Composition
C 4
A 3
S – C 2
S CS
ALIPRE 60 18 9
It is usually used in ternary mixtures with calcium sulfate and Portland cement in order to obtain:
• Varied Setting Time within a wide time range by changing the mix proportions of the three components
• Rapid Early Strength Development
• Progressive Strength Increase, exceeding top-performing Portland cements
The Hydration Process
ALIPRE ® composition enables the development of an hydration process, that differs substantially from the one
of ordinary Portland cements, being characterized by the formation of regular and compact primary ettringite,
which affects the subsequent hardening process.
In ALIPRE ® based ternary systems, the main reaction of ettringite formation is the following
Where:
C 4
A 3
S – + 8CS – H 2
+ 6CH + 74H → 3C 6
AS – 3 H 32
C 4
A 3
S – - Calcium Sulfoaluminate
It is ALIPRE ® basic component and promotes early strength development (thanks to primary ettringite formation).
CS – H n
- Calcium Sulfate
(n=0 anhydrite, n=1/2 hemihydrate, n=2 dihydrate or gypsum)
It causes ettringite to form from C 4
A 3
S – during the hydration phase (generally n=0 anhydrite)
CH - Calcium Hydroxide
It results from the hydration of Portland cement, and at later ages from the hydration of ALIPRE ® belitic phase.
C 2
S - Belite
It is responsible for strength development at later ages.
The test to measure the initial and final setting time has been carried out according to standard EN 196-3, but
with a different w/c ratio (w/c = 0.35).
Mechanical Properties
The strength development, which is rapid at early ages, progresses across time following the same trend as in
conventional Portland cements.
Use with Admixtures
The addition of admixtures does not adversely affect ALIPRE ® :
Test carried out with ALIPRE ® and commonly used admixtures, e.g. retarders, set/hardening accelerators,
water-retaining agents, superplasticizers, etc., showed no detrimental effects, with all test parameters
successfully met.
Versatility
Cement based Binders for Specific Products and Applications
Products
ALIPRE ® is a highly versatile and practical product for the building material industry in terms of setting time
and strength development and can be used to formulate specific products according to the type of applications
required, with ordinary Portland cement and admixtures.
Various tested formulations were defined for the sole purpose of assessing ALIPRE ® potential applications.
Setting time and hardening time can be easily adjusted by varying mix design parameters.
Applications
Growing demand for fast setting, high early strength and shrinkage compensating products for specific
applications requires increasingly complex formulations.
ALIPRE ® is the ideal constituent in the preparation of such formulations for:
• Tile Adhesives and Grouts
• Repair Concretes (i.e. bridges, airport runaways and parking apron, etc.)
• Technical Rapid-Setting Mortars (e.g. for restoration and repairs, etc.)
• Self-Levelling Floor Screeds
• Sprayed Concretes and Shotcretes
• Mining Products
• Waste Encapsulation
• Plasters & Mortars (i.e. Joints, Sulfate Resistance, No-Shrinkage, etc.)
• Rapid or semi-rapid sealants
• Special adhesives
• Precast (1)
Physical & Mechanical Properties
• Highly adjustable setting times
• High early strength, gradually increasing over time
• Light in Color, highly suitable for both light and pigmented formulations.
Durability Properties
• High Sulfate Resistance
• Dimensional Stability
• Low Shrinkage Effect
(1)
The possibility of using ALIPRE ® in structural precast has to be evaluated by taking into account local legislation.
