Stretching Beyond Boundaries
Sometimes life makes a turn because of one
incident. This was the case for Lee Yu Qing
when his father had a fall.
As a teenager, Yu Qing was not really keen on
studies. He chose friends who were a negative
influence and almost ended up in the Boys’
Home. Although he was successful in gaining
a place in ITE, in 2005, he quit after just three
days to do odd jobs.
When Yu Qing was nearing the end of his
National Service commitment, his 71-year-old
father became wheelchair-bound after a fall.
The financial burden of the family fell on Yu
Qing’s shoulders. This event was a catalyst to
change.
But for Yu Qing, a strong sense of purpose
propelled him to a perfect G.P.A. of 4.0.
Since Yu Qing’s mother passed away in March
this year, he and his sister have shared the
responsibilities of caring for his father. He
rushes home daily after classes at Singapore
Polytechnic, where he is pursuing a Diploma
in Computer Engineering, to prepare dinner,
before running off to work as a part-time
driver.
Yu Qing is indeed a model for all of us, not
only as a filial son, or as a good student, but
as a person who, through strong purpose
has overcome many hurdles and has found
direction in life.
He re-enrolled in ITE, taking up a Nitec in
Communications Technology. Despite having
to work to support the family, Yu Qing was
active in his Community Services CCA. The
burden may have been very heavy for some.
