Quek Ping Yang Nico
Nitec in Electronics (Instrumentation)
ITE College Central
Ace All-Rounder
It was not the most popular or well-known
sport on campus, but Quek Ping Yang Nico
gave it a shot, nevertheless. The sport is
tchoukball, a relatively new Co-Curricular
Activity (CCA) in ITE. Despite not knowing
much about tchoukball at first, Nico took it up
as his CCA and discovered that he excelled in
it. He then made it a point to raise the profile
of tchoukball in ITE. As the coach and captain
for the ITE College Central tchoukball team,
Nico spearheaded recruitment drives to
boost the team’s numbers, and conducted
training sessions for beginners in the sport.
Come August 2011, Nico will don national
colours, as he represents Singapore at the
World Tchoukball Championship in Italy.
Other than tchoukball, Nico was also actively
involved in a multitude of CCAs. He was a
senior executive committee member of the
College’s Co-op Club, and the team leader
for a community service project in Bintan,
Indonesia.
Besides excelling in CCAs, Nico also turned in a
glossy report card. Looking at his sterling results
of a perfect Grade Point Average of 4.0 for his
Nitec in Electronics (Instrumentation) course, it
would be hard to imagine that just two years
before, the then 17-year-old was absolutely
clueless about the subject.
“Inspired by my mother and older brother, who
were both working in the tourism industry, I had
wanted to sign up for a Tourism course at ITE.
But vacancies were limited and I was offered
a course in Electronics instead,” recalled Nico.
Not one to give up without a try, he accepted
the offer. He developed an interest in Electronics
gradually and went on to excel in the course
thanks to his ever-approachable and helpful
lecturers. Nico is now a Diploma in Aeronautical
Engineering student at Singapore Polytechnic,
and he aspires to become an aircraft engineer
one day.
Low Ivan
Higher Nitec in Business Studies
(Sport Management)
ITE College East
A Pep Talk in Success
Learning is a journey that one can take on
at any point of time in life. This holds true
especially for 37-year-old Low Ivan. Having
graduated with just three O-Level passes
almost 20 years ago, Ivan was eager to start
work and thought he was sufficiently equipped
to get through life. But after working for several
years, he realised that he needed to further his
education for better career prospects.
“That’s when I decided to apply for the SAF-ITE
Sponsorship Scheme,” said the Army regular, a
2nd Warrant Officer with HQ Commandos. “I
chose ITE because I wanted to continue where
I left off. Also, I was inspired by how this worldclass
technical institute is able to equip school
leavers and adult learners with skills.”
This move has paid off handsomely for Ivan.
Leveraging on his experience in the Army,
and his passion for endurance sports, Ivan
founded the Fitness Club – Endurance Sports
at ITE College East. As President, he boosted
membership numbers from a mere five students
to 26 by the time he left. Ivan also volunteered
his time and expertise at several community
events as well. His efforts earned him the ITE
College East Student Commendation Award in
2010, as well as other accolades.
The go-getter also aced his studies. Armed with
a more mature outlook in life, Ivan was highly
motivated to work hard to achieve a perfect
Grade Point Average of 4.0. In class, Ivan also
took on a ‘big-brother’ role, motivating his
fellow classmates, organising study groups
and updating absentees on class work.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Ivan, though.
He had to juggle between spending time with
his young family and studying. His sacrifices
and subsequent successes have, however, also
inspired his seven-year-old daughter to also
study hard!
Now after graduating, Ivan continues to inspire
others. He encourages young Army regulars to
continue their studies with ITE, and is even
working on a programme to fight obesity at
ITE College East. His support towards ITE is
invaluable, and is a testament of how ITE can,
and has changed lives significantly.
Choong Wei Min Elijah
Higher Nitec in Mechatronics Engineering
ITE College West
Growing With ITE
For Choong Wei Min Elijah, community
work was not something that he gave much
thought to before he joined ITE. However, it
quickly became his new-found passion once
he had the opportunity to be involved. Said
Elijah, “I wasn’t given much opportunity to
volunteer in secondary school. In ITE, there
were many opportunities. And my passion
grew with every voluntary work opportunity.”
His passion to serve has seen Elijah taking on
the role of President of the Students’ Council,
participating in an Overseas Involvement
Project in Cambodia, and volunteering in St
Luke’s Hospital, among others. In addition,
Elijah discovered a new-found passion in
community work.
With his strong leadership qualities, Elijah was
elected as the President of the Automation &
Robotics Club. He also represented ITE in the
WorldSkills Singapore 2010 in the Mobile
Robotics Category and participated in a
four-week Overseas Industrial Attachment
programme in Berlin, Germany in 2010. One
of the biggest highlights for Elijah, however,
was the rare chance to be selected to attend a
dialogue session with Prime Minister Lee Hsien
Loong.
“I was very honoured to be selected. I feel that
as youths, instead of waiting to be inspired, we
ought to be thnd inspire others, so that we can
shine together,” said Elijah, who has definitely
grown in maturity during his four years in ITE.
This was not always the case for Elijah. As a
teenager, he was playful and unmotivated to
study. All these changed when he enrolled
in ITE in 2007. Starting with Nitec in
Mechatronics before progressing to Higher
Nitec in Mechatronics Engineering, Elijah
spent four years under the nurturing care
of his ITE lecturers. He put in extra effort to
make sure he understood the course concepts
and sought help from lecturers constantly to
improve his studies.
Elijah admitted that even then, he still lapsed
into bouts of laziness when studying for tests.
“Thinking of the days when I worked as a
bookshop assistant and the hardship I suffered
gives me the push to study harder,” he said.
Elijah’s efforts have definitely paid off he
obtained an outstanding Grade Point Average
of 3.875 in his Higher Nitec course!
These may be simple tasks for able-bodied
people, but for the wheelchair-bound, these
are the everyday nightmares. Hence, when a
wheelchair user approached Dr Lisa Wang
Jianwu, a lecturer at ITE College Central, for
assistance, the idea of an improved wheelchair
was born.
The Flexible Power Wheelchair has new
and improved features that makes it stand
out from conventional wheelchairs. It has a
height-adjustable seat, movable arm rests that
facilitate the shifting of users from wheelchair
When caretakers at St Luke’s ElderCare told a
group of ITE students how they would like the
in-house rehabilitative pedalling equipment
for their patients to be smaller, they did not
expect their wish to come true. Not only were
they surprised with an invention which fulfilled
the initial request of space-saving, the new
product came packed with enhanced features.
The Low-cost Multi-exercise Rehabilitation
Equipment, invented by Nitec in Mechanical
Engineering students from ITE College Central,
weighs only 25kg and is portable for use
either on the ground or on a table. Apart from
pedaling, the equipment also has a resistance
pulley system for strength endurance exercises
– just like a portable gym set!
Team leader Chia Wei Lun said, “We worked
very closely with St Luke’s Eldercare to get
feedback on our prototype and improve our
product. We wanted to be sure that this will
Giving Patients a Leg Up
Giving Patients a Leg Up
The next time you feel “pins and needles”
after sitting for too long, think of the plight
of handicapped and stroke patients who
cannot at all feel their lower limbs. Although
they cannot move their legs, they need to
stimulate the lower limb joints frequently
to prevent stiffness and encourage blood
circulation, which might lead to recovery.
The rehabilitation process can be costly
and tiring, and may require the assistance
of therapists or family members. Presently,
there are no assistive-devices in the market
which help patients exercise the three
lower limb joints (hip, knee and ankle)
concurrently, with minimal assistance.
Realising the gap after a visit to rehabilitation
centres, a group of three ITE College Central
students, together with their two supervisors,
designed a device specifically for this purpose.
“We learnt a lot. Aside from teamwork and how
to manage time and stress, we also picked up
the software skills needed for product design.
We realised that as engineering students,
we can be innovative in contributing to
society,” shared Team Leader, Chin Lee Shean.
The final prototype, built at a cost of $1,200,
is already being used at the Jurong Handicap
Welfare Association. The team’s supervisors,
Dr Lisa Wang Jianwu and Mr Lee Chwee
Lam, both lecturers shared that the team
was gathering feedback from users to fine
tune the product further before marketing it.
Getting a firm grip on things is probably an
insignificant action for most people, but for
recovering stroke patients or those plagued
with joint ailments, such as arthritis, it could
be painful.
To help such patients, a cross-College team of
students from ITE College East and ITE College
Central, developed a strength training device
equipped with the unique feature of providing
immediate feedback to the users on their
progress. Current rehabilitation machines used
in hospitals and nursing homes, do not have
this feature.
This battery-operated device also incorporates
two simple, interactive games – one using a
touch-screen and the other using two sensorequipped
stress balls. The touch-screen game
exercises the users’ reaction skills and eyehand
coordination, while the stress balls help
the users build the strength of their fingers.
Upon the completion of each task, the “score”
is flashed on a display panel and a pre-recorded
voice message advises the user on his results.
Team Leader, Liang Zhenwei, a Higher Nitec
in Mechanical Engineering student, shared,
“We took around five months to complete
the project – from brainstorming, to designing
the product, to fabricating the prototype and
troubleshooting.”
To make sure their brainchild was practical
and easy to use, the team invited a few senior
citizens to try out the prototype, and even
brought it to a hospital to get expert opinion
from the resident therapists there. The verdict?
“They all gave it the thumbs-up!” quipped a
delighted Zhenwei.
Inter-School Synergy Yields Innovative
Assistive Technology Device
Nitec in Nursing students Tan Yong Kuan
Ryan and Rachel Anne Preece have always
wished for an assistive technological device for
patients with lower-limb disabilities to transfer
themselves safely from the bed to a chair,
wheelchair or sofa. But, they could not figure
out the mechanical details of developing such
a device. They turned to two students from the
Nitec in Mechanical Technology course Ong
Yi Song Eddy and Toh Cheng Rong who were
more than happy to come in and lend their
expertise for the worthy cause.
The prototype was designed after observing
how nurses work in hospitals. Ryan, the Team
Leader, said, “We wanted a device with which
patients could transfer themselves from pointto-point
with minimal assistance, to increase
their self-reliance.
These ideas were then communicated to their
Mechanical Technology counterparts. Eddy
shared, “We look into the safety aspects of
the product. Cheng Rong and I made sure
that the weight of the equipment, which is
over 100kg, was well-distributed. We also
suggested a linking ‘bridge’ for the device to
aid the transfers better.”
This synergistic collaboration between students
from the School of Applied & Health Sciences
and School of Engineering has been a fruitful
learning experience for everyone. Cheng
Rong viewed, “It has been an interesting
collaboration and I have learnt how to work
better in a team where each person has
different strengths.” Ryan added, “Before this
project, all my friends were nursing students!
But now, at least I have some friends from the
other Schools.”
I’m Light is currently in the process of being
patented and the team hopes to commercialise
the device.
Track and Trace
Have you panicked because you could not
locate your child? If so, you can heave a sigh
of relief with this new invention, by two Nitec
in Wireless Technology students, which helps
trace and track the location of young children
who go missing.
The creation was inspired by an incident where
an ITE lecturer could not locate his young
daughter. The device uses GPS technology
with radio-frequency identification (RFID)
tags and readers, which are linked to a webbased
portal with web cameras. It allows
kindergarten teachers and parents to monitor
the whereabouts of children. Parents would
be able to view their children in activity, when
they access the web-based portal. The system
can also send out SMS notifications to parents
when their children enter or leave the school
compounds and when they board the school
bus.
44
Team Leader, Mohammad Hafiz Bin Abdul
Hussain, shared: “The most challenging part
of the project is linking up the GPS technology
to the system. It took us about one-and-a-half
months.”
Together with his partner, Yap Tsu Hui, Hafiz
hopes the innovation would be widely used
not only by kindergartens, but also tweaked
for use in hospitals and prisons. A survey of
100 parents showed that they were receptive
towards investing in the device. “On top of
their minds is cost and when they found out
that each parent only need to pay $5.50 a
month for the kindergarten to install the
system, they were willing to give it a go,”
Hafiz added.
Detecting Hazards, Preventing Accidents
Danger lurks around, but people are oblivious
to it. This was the reason why Lim Wei Song
and his team invented COAL, which stands
for the three hazardous substances the
device detects Carbon Monoxide, Alcohol and
Liquefied Petroleum Gas.
COAL is a pocket-sized device that comes
with three interchangeable sensor heads to
detect dangerous levels of the three hazardous
substances. Other similar devices in the market
are larger and usually only detect one type of
hazardous substance. The unique COAL runs
on batteries.
Team Leader, Lim Wei Song, shared that the
device is particularly useful for those who
want to know their blood-alcohol level after
drinking, to decide if they can drive. “We came
up with the idea because there is a demand
for such a device. It can potentially prevent
tragedies on the roads,” he said.
The team members, all of whom recently
graduated from the Higher Nitec in
Electronics Engineering course, then went
a step further to enhance the device. It can,
for example, be used in cars and kitchens to
detect any gas leakage. It also has an optional
Wi-Fi feature to alert the user’s next-of-kin
when there is danger.
“The process of creating COAL has taught
my team and I that anything is possible if
we set our minds on it. We are really happy
to have won the Lee Kuan Yew Technology
Award,” added Wei Song.
Never Too Late
As the saying goes – it is never too late. Before
Chua Shuang Rui Sharon joined ITE, she was
lost and rebellious. “I didn’t like to study, I
talked back, I played truant and sometimes I
slept in class,” she shared.
But Sharon has since blossomed into one
who is focused on pursuing her dreams and
aspirations. Attentive in class and always
ready to serve, Sharon excelled in her studies,
CCA and community work. What changed
her, one might wonder. “My ITE lecturers
were very helpful and caring. They gave me
many opportunities to try new things. I also
realised that I was hurting my parents with my
rebellious ways.”
Her lecturers described her as a positive
influence to her peers as she was always ready
to guide them and hand-in high quality work.
“Sharon is very active and is open to trying
out different opportunities. She understands
the importance of being a valuable contributor
to the society and wants to be a positive
example to her siblings at home. Despite her
commitment to obtaining good grades, Sharon
displays her passion for life through a series of
community work that she is involved in. She
has volunteered in the Youth Olympic Games,
Singapore Zoological Gardens, blood donation
drives and community outreach programmes
for the Singapore Association of the Visually
Handicapped,” said lecturer Becky Lim.
She is grateful to ITE for the learning
opportunities in Perth, Shanghai and Johor
Bahru, for each trip has given her invaluable
experience and exposure. “I learned to be
independent. Working with people from the
different countries has broadened my horizons.
We worked hard but we also had fun,” she
reminisced.
Her attitude to improve herself constantly is
evidenced by her retaking her ‘O’ levels and
learning the Korean language, which she
hoped would help her achieve her aim of
becoming a tourist guide one day. Sharon is
now pursuing her Diploma in Hospitality &
A Role Model and Inspiration
If there is a search for an ideal ITE student, Lee
Ming Yang would undoubtedly fit the bill. Ming
Yang’s list of CCAs and community service
would fill up pages. Not only was he the
President of Interact Club and Vice-President
of the Student Council for ITE College Central,
Ming Yang also participated in almost every
college-level project. On top of that, he actively
volunteered in community service both locally
and overseas.
For someone so active, Ming Yang still managed
to do well in his studies with a Grade Point
Average of 3.755. For this, he was awarded a
Gold Medal at the College’s recent graduation
ceremony.
Among his course mates, Ming Yang is looked
upon as an older brother, a role model and an
inspiration – someone who is ever ready to
share and help. Talk to any of his lecturers and
course mates, and you would find admiration
all around.
The Higher Nitec in Accounting is not
30-year-old Ming Yang first qualification. After
secondary schooling and National Service,
he completed several courses, including a
Certificate in Opticianry, while helping out at
his family’s optical shop. He decided not to
study full-time so that his three other brothers
could do so.
When he applied to enrol in ITE, it was part
of his plans to actualise his dream career in
the hospitality industry. But he gained so
much more from ITE than he had ever dreamt
of. “The experience and exposure were
invaluable,” said Ming Yang, who is currently
doing his Diploma in Business Studies at Ngee
Ann Polytechnic. He hoped to start working in
the tourism or hotel industry after completing
his Diploma. Pursuing a part-time degree
course is also in the a pipeline.
Stretching Beyond Boundaries
Sometimes life makes a turn because of one
incident. This was the case for Lee Yu Qing
when his father had a fall.
As a teenager, Yu Qing was not really keen on
studies. He chose friends who were a negative
influence and almost ended up in the Boys’
Home. Although he was successful in gaining
a place in ITE, in 2005, he quit after just three
days to do odd jobs.
When Yu Qing was nearing the end of his
National Service commitment, his 71-year-old
father became wheelchair-bound after a fall.
The financial burden of the family fell on Yu
Qing’s shoulders. This event was a catalyst to
change.
But for Yu Qing, a strong sense of purpose
propelled him to a perfect G.P.A. of 4.0.
Since Yu Qing’s mother passed away in March
this year, he and his sister have shared the
responsibilities of caring for his father. He
rushes home daily after classes at Singapore
Polytechnic, where he is pursuing a Diploma
in Computer Engineering, to prepare dinner,
before running off to work as a part-time
driver.
Yu Qing is indeed a model for all of us, not
only as a filial son, or as a good student, but
as a person who, through strong purpose
has overcome many hurdles and has found
direction in life.
He re-enrolled in ITE, taking up a Nitec in
Communications Technology. Despite having
to work to support the family, Yu Qing was
active in his Community Services CCA. The
burden may have been very heavy for some.
Beyond Expectations
For someone who initially did not have a
passion for nursing, Ker Soon Peng Kelvin,
has certainly exceeded all expectations. The
Nitec in Nursing graduate, with a near-perfect
Grade Point Average score of 3.95, enrolled in
the course following his mother’s advice. But
Kelvin almost gave up shortly after enrolment
because of the demands of the course. He was
persuaded to stay on by his ITE lecturers.
Today, the Lee Kuan Yew Model Student
Awardee is pursuing his Diploma in Health
Sciences (Nursing) at Ngee Ann Polytechnic,
and has his heart set on attaining degree
before moving into a career in nursing.
Life has dealt Kelvin a difficult hand. He suffers
from diabetes mellitus and hypertension,
requiring him to watch his diet and avoid
strenuous activities. This, however, has not
stopped him from participating in a myriad
of activities. Kelvin was the President of
the Singapore Nurses Association’s Student
Chapter in 2010, a member of the ITE Dragon
Boat team that emerged as Champion in
the Open Category of the River Regatta
Competition in the same year, and the Leader
of the First Aid Team for the Youth Expedition
Programme to Vietnam in 2009.
The all-rounded achiever did not have an
excellent start in his secondary school days, but
it was the support of his lecturers and friends
at ITE that provided him the impetus to change.
For the transformation within, Kelvin has the
nursing course and his lecturers to thank. “The
nursing course has changed me. It unleashed
the potential in me, and transformed me into
a patient, understanding and caring person,”
added Kelvin.
Making the Cut
Ng Sing Guan Noel could have taken the ‘O’
level route after his ‘N’ level examinations,
but the aspiring hairstylist was determined to
follow his dream – he chose to enrol in the
Nitec in Hair Fashion & Design course at ITE
instead.
“I’ve always preferred a more hands-on style
of learning, which was why I chose to come
to ITE. I was also attracted to hairstyling
because a good hairstyle can instantly improve
a person’s image,” said the 19-year-old with
conviction.
Noel’s decision proved to be the right one, as
he went on to top his course in ITE, graduating
with a near-perfect Grade Point Average
of 3.849. He also did Singapore proud by
clinching a Gold Medal at the ASEAN Skills
Competition 2010 in Bangkok, Thailand,
where he pit his hairstyling skills against the
best young talents from Southeast Asia. And
come October 2011, Noel will once again don
national colours as he takes on competitors
from around the world, at the 41st WorldSkills
Competition in London, United Kingdom.
But it was not all a bed of roses for Noel, who
has had to juggle competition training and
part-time work, while studying full-time at ITE.
Coming from a humble family background,
Noel spent his weekends working at a salon
to earn his own pocket money, as well as help
supplement the family income.
But the cheerful lad has taken everything in
his stride, never once complaining. In fact, he
relishes his job at the hair salon, where he is
able to learn the ropes of running a business
from his boss. “Once I have established a
regular clientele base, I hope to set up my own
salon. And if my business grows, I would like to
take on the role of a professional trainer and
Overcoming the Odds
Wang Tsui Mun Jasmine’s sunny and cheerful
disposition belies the difficulties that she has
had to deal with at home. When Jasmine was
very young, her mother left the family, leaving
Jasmine and her two siblings in the care of
their father and grandmother. To make matters
worse, Jasmine’s father – the family’s sole
breadwinner – passed away when she was
just nine years old. Since then, Jasmine and her
siblings have had to depend on social welfare
provisions for her living and education expenses.
It is not surprising, then, that this 19-yearold
girl exudes a level of maturity beyond her
years. Not one to bow down to circumstances,
Jasmine focused on her studies and emerged
as the top student in her Nitec in Digital
Audio & Video Production course, with
a perfect Grade Point Average of 4.0.
schedules and mentored new members.
She was also tasked to lead her peers on an
Overseas Attachment Programme to Vietnam
and a Youth Expedition Project in Myanmar.
On her experience at ITE, Jasmine shared:
“Besides having acquired hands-on, practical
Making Lemonade
“When life gives you lemons, you make
lemonade.” We’ve heard this many times,
but this saying perfectly describes the growing
years of 20-year-old Muhammad Bin Mohd
Jauhari. At the tender age of nine, Muhammad’s
parents divorced. Being the eldest of five
siblings, he felt he had to take charge and be
the father figure in his household to lighten his
mother’s heavy burden.
The family moved across the Causeway just
before Muhammad enrolled in ITE. This meant
that the teenager had to wake up at four every
morning for his daily commute. Despite the
long journey, Muhammad was almost always
punctual for his lessons; a feat that most
impressed his lecturers at ITE.
Muhammad gives his best in everything
he sets out to do. Following his passion for
clean energy engineering, Muhammad took
up a Higher Nitec in Electrical Engineering,
obtaining straight “A”s in all his modules and a
perfect Grade Point Average score of 4.0.
Believing in having a holistic education,
Muhammad is also active in a number of
CCAs, such as Tae Kwan Do and the College’s
Community Service Club. He has also taken
part in competitions, such as the Green Wave
Environment Competition 2010 and the Home
Team Innovation Fest 2009, and volunteered
his time in projects, including being a mentor
in his former secondary school and for the
MUIS TEENS Alive Programme. His selflessness
has been a key motivating factor in inspiring
his siblings and those he has mentored.
His exemplary performance in both studies
and life has delighted his mother. “I could tell
that my mother is happy to see me succeed.
She no longer worries about my studies. I’ll
continue to do well and make her proud of
me,” said Muhammad. This is, perhaps, his
most affirming achievement of all.
Nurulludin Bin Samadi
Nitec in Culinary Skills (Western)
ITE College West
Braised To Perfection
After the N-level examinations, Nurulludin Bin
Samadi went to work as a helper at a coffee
shop because he was not motivated to continue
his studies. Seven years on, now at 24, he has
sliced, diced, and cooked his way to the second
place in an overseas training programme in
the world-renowned Institut Paul Bocuse in
France; earned a perfect Grade Point Average
of 4.0 in his Nitec in Culinary Skills (Western)
course; and trained under the famous Chef
André Chiang at Restaurant André. Like a good
braised dish, it has taken hours of preparation
and work before Nurulludin has tasted the
sweet success of his achievements.
The turning point in his life came while he
was serving his National Service. “Only then
did I realise that education is very important,”
recalled Nurulludin. Inspired by his childhood
dream of being a chef and the culinary skills of
the contestants in cooking show, Iron Chef, the
late bloomer enrolled into ITE.
Nurulludin’s determination to perfect his
culinary skills saw him taking advantage of
every learning opportunity. Whether it was
leading a team for VVIP lunch events, fund
raising dinners or taking part in community
events, Nurulludin tackled each event with
great enthusiasm.
Nurulludin’s achievements are noteworthy, as
he had to juggle his studies with his part-time
job. With all that effort put in, and a maturity
gained from life’s experiences, it leaves no
doubt that hardworking Nurulludin might just
fulfill his dream of opening his own restaurant.
Receiving the Lee Kwan Yew Model Student/
Trainee Award is the icing on the cake for this
budding chef and entrepreneur.
Lee Kian Keong
Nitec in Automotive Technology (Heavy Vehicles)
Singapore Technologies Kinetics Ltd
A Foundation for Moving Ahead
Most stop at one. But Lee Kian Keong decided
to go for two, i.e. two Nitecs. 26-year old Kian
Keong was an ITE graduate in 2000 with a
Nitec in Electronics qualification and decided
to gun for a Nitec in Automotive Technology
(Heavy Vehicles) in 2010 – this time, as a
trainee with Singapore Technologies Kinetics
Ltd.
His main duty at work is maintaining military
vehicles. “Most vehicles now come with
electronic components. So, my previous training
has come in handy in my understanding of how
these parts work. In fact, I think I learn faster
than my friends,” Kian Keong said in jest.
He said, “Since my National Service (NS) days
as a combat engineer, I have close contact with
these vehicles, including armoured tanks. After
NS, I worked as a sales executive for five years
before making a decision to follow my heart
and apply for the traineeship programme.”
Looking ahead, Kian Keong is aware that an
ITE certification is of value to him in his work
and future. He shared, “I have learnt a lot
from this programme and see a long career
in Singapore Technologies. This will give me a
good foundation to pursue a diploma in the
future.”
With a high Grade Point Average of 3.5, he has
been lauded by his employers for his efficiency
in completing complex tasks and ability to
learn fast. Passion is a key factor in this, as
the Lee Kuan Yew Model Trainee for 2011 has
always been fascinated with military vehicles.
