III. DEEP<br />

A traveling exhibition that explored <strong>the</strong> huge range of<br />

underwater creatures that survive by adapting to <strong>the</strong><br />

extreme conditions at <strong>the</strong>se depths.<br />

A yearly process<br />

A national contest with 75 finalists from all Israeli<br />

Professor Ada Yonath,<br />

• The final ceremony at <strong>the</strong> President’s residence with Shimon<br />

Peres, Gideon Saar, <strong>the</strong> Education Minister, and Prof. Daniel<br />

Hershkowitz, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Science</strong> Minister.<br />

A Scientific Youth Parliament<br />

Involvement of 60 high school students in <strong>the</strong> public discourse on<br />

bio-ethical topics.<br />

The final event was <strong>the</strong> submission of recommendations to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Israeli Parliament to be adopted as new Israeli laws.<br />

Under <strong>the</strong> auspices of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Science</strong> & Technology Committee<br />

at The KNESSET (Israeli parliament)<br />

ACCENT<br />

As part of <strong>the</strong> international campaign on Climate<br />

Change <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> developed and operated<br />

activities for students, educators and families,<br />

focusing on our civil responsibilities.<br />

• A local Citizens’ Debates for <strong>the</strong> general public.<br />

• A local Citizens’ Debates for educators and teachers.<br />

• A conference on Water Policy in cooperation<br />

with <strong>the</strong> “Friends of Earth - Middle East”<br />

On <strong>the</strong> exhibits floor:<br />

WaterWorks’ Exhibitions: A cluster of exhibitions on water - Israeli resources, scarcity,<br />

quality and conservation (permanent exhibitions).<br />

DEEP - Exhibition In honor of International Biodiversity Year. An exhibition that sheds light<br />

on <strong>the</strong> deep, dark depths of ocean life, highlighting its beauty and fragility.<br />

Winnick program - for schools<br />

A yearly program targeted at <strong>Jerusalem</strong> students to deepen <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge of<br />

sustainability, materials and <strong>the</strong> environment.<br />

17 classes from 6 different schools from <strong>Jerusalem</strong> took part in <strong>the</strong> program.<br />

Supported by <strong>the</strong> Winnick family through <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jerusalem</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong>.<br />

Dr Molecule Flows with Water – A science show<br />

Through drama and humor Dr. Molecule teaches scientific<br />

principles and characteristics of water.<br />

Forum Theatre;<br />

Against <strong>the</strong> Current – A science show<br />

A forum <strong>the</strong>atre that involves debates on energy and<br />

sustainability and requires active participation of <strong>the</strong><br />

audience.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> help of <strong>the</strong> Israeli Electric Company.<br />

Outreach - Environmental Friendliness<br />

Based on traveling exhibits, demonstrations and workshops.<br />

Activities took place at schools and community centers in<br />

<strong>Jerusalem</strong> with 8,500 participants.<br />

Israeli Arab Population<br />

Over 15,000 Arab school students came to special activities at <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Museum</strong> (K-12). 14% of <strong>the</strong>se students were subsidized by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jerusalem</strong><br />

<strong>Foundation</strong>.<br />

The <strong>Museum</strong>:<br />

• Employs an Arab coordinator.<br />

• Markets to this big community.<br />

• Adapts educational programs.<br />

• With Arab guides and science cards in Arabic.<br />

In order to overcome cultural barriers <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>:<br />

• Employs a Haredi coordinator<br />

• Adapts educational programs<br />

Last year 3,403 Ultra-orthodox school students in 185 different<br />

groups had <strong>the</strong>ir first exposure to science and technology<br />

issues.<br />

Activities took place at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> as well as in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

communities.<br />

Monthly encounters between scientists and<br />

<strong>the</strong> general public on <strong>the</strong> topic of evolution,<br />

at <strong>the</strong> “Tmol Shilshom” café in downtown<br />

<strong>Jerusalem</strong>. Free admission.<br />

SciCinema:<br />

Monthly events organized in cooperation<br />

with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jerusalem</strong> Cinema<strong>the</strong>que. A lecture,<br />

followed by a film screening.<br />

European Union Projects<br />

participation in EU projects of<br />

<strong>Science</strong> in Society:<br />

ACCENT - Raising awareness of <strong>the</strong> climate crisis.<br />

MIC – An innovative pilot interface, on <strong>the</strong> Ideal future of<br />

European cities & <strong>Jerusalem</strong>.<br />

RESEARCHERS’ NIGHT- An open event free of charge with<br />

researchers and <strong>the</strong> public.<br />

2WAYS – developing innovative ways to explain current<br />

research in life sciences for high school students and<br />

<strong>the</strong> general public. Finals took place at The European<br />

Union Parliament in Brussels under <strong>the</strong> auspice of<br />

STOA (<strong>Science</strong> & Technology Options Assessment<br />

committee) with 60 delegates from 30 different European<br />

parliaments in 17 countries. The final event was<br />

coordinated by our <strong>Museum</strong>.<br />
