The response:
Conveys a thorough understanding of the text (The United States dollar … has evolved
throughout America’s history). The response makes clear and explicit connections between
information and ideas in the text and the assigned task (the U.S. dollar … has evolved into the
world’s most readily accepted and trustworthy money).
Develops some ideas more fully than others. The response uses specific and relevant details
from the text to discuss the history of the dollar from 1791 to the Civil War (colonists … barter
with each other, the National Bank Act gave the government exclusive rights to print money) to
the present day United States dollar. The post World War I period is left undeveloped.
Maintains a clear and appropriate focus on the evolution of the dollar. The response exhibits a
chronological sequence of ideas through use of appropriate devices and transitions (Since 1791
