In 1940, when he was 16 and away at school, his mother, a green eyed, red haired Italian beauty, was killed at age 53 when a Nazi bomb exploded. Fearing for the safeness of the family – King George had moved everyone from Frogmore Cottage to Wilderness House at Hampton Court. But safer, it wasn’t. A ceiling beam had fallen on his mother’s head and she died a few days later as Andrew had just returned from school. In his book, Andrew embraces a drawing titled: My Mother's Death, showing him praying over her coffin. Perhaps even more emotionally devastating, his first wife, Kathleen, unexpectedly died in 1967 from a virulent flu virus. She was just 33, leaving him a widower with two small sons. Today, Andrew and his beautiful wife, Inez Storer, a celebrated artist in her own right, have resided for more than three decades amongst the calm of their Northern California 17 room, three story, century old, Inverness Home {once the old Inverness Hotel} at the end of a luxuriant lane. What an extraordinary journey! "And I owe it all to her."
