The consistent focus on the customers’ needs is a feature
recurring throughout the entire company history of Ryf Ltd.
It was this attitude that gradually turned the traditional
family-run business into the leading Swiss Supplier of microscopes
and overall solutions in the field of optical test
equipment, measuring devices and control systems.
If you don’t go forward, you go backward: although we’re
proud to look back on 40 years of business activity, our
attention is turned predominately to the challenges of
the future. We’ve invested, extended the infrastructure,
boosted partnerships, and will do everything to actively

Company history
1965
Bernhard Ryf founds the company. It is initially located
on Solothurnstrasse 90 in Grenchen. The business division
of microscopes and optical instruments is complemented
by a photographic shop.
1972
The premises need to be extended. The first proprietary
microscope illuminators are developed.
1975
Hans Ryf becomes manager and acquires the company
in 1980. He and his wife Margreth continually expand
the business.
1984
The company moves to “Marktpassage” in the centre
of Grenchen. The infrastructure is expanded to include a
demo room for microscopes.
1994
Again the company is bursting at its seams. Temporary
improvement achieves by moving to the new premises on
Bettlachstrasse 2 (where the camera and photographic
shop is located today). The company turns into a private
limited company.

1999
Daniel Ryf joins the company, representing the second
generation to run his parents’ business.
2001
Ryf Ltd’s innovative performance is awarded with the
State of Solothurn ‘Company of the Year’ Prize.
2003
The company acquires and reconstructs the old-established
“Löwen-House“ in the centre of town. With these
new premises comprising 800 m2, confined space is at
last a matter of the past. The new, spacious showroom
allows presenting the practical application of over 100
microscopes, complete measuring and testing systems as
well as the range of accessories. The infrastructure for
the divisions of maintenance, service and repairs is extended
considerably.
After many years of close partnership, Ryf becomes the
Swiss general agent for Kappa products (camera systems,
software). Ryf offers customised semi- or fully automatic
image processing systems for industrial use and research,
all from one source.
2005
40th anniversary of Ryf Ltd. Additional expansion of
services, including enlargement of the warehouse, repairs
workshop and mechanical workshop.
Testing welcome: the showroom with
some 100 micro- and macro-systems.

Illuminators
Let there be light. Illumination was long considered microscopy’s
‘poor cousin’. Ryf Ltd. took charge by creating
innovations and own products, including controllable HF
fluorescence lamps, customised fibre optic illuminators and
LED lamps for microscopes and vision systems.

Customised testing and measuring systems
Everything from one source. Expertise, creativity and
commitment is what Ryf Ltd. uses to meet special challenges
in quality assurance. Whenever the need arises, the specialists
in industrial optics simply have additional hardware
components developed and manufactured themselves.
Once the testing systems have been delivered, optimum
operational availability of the systems is guaranteed thanks
to the customer service.
Here are three examples of customized solutions
“made by Ryf“.
Balzers
Tailored to the customer’s needs right down to the
last detail. The turn-key system for inspecting surface
coatings.
Balzers Ltd. is a leading business in the field of
performance-enhancing hard coatings for tools and
precision components. In this field, it is important to
observe even the tightest of error tolerances. Deviations
in the range of a thousandth millimetre may
cause problems. Therefore optimum testing systems
for quality assurance are all the more important.
A detailed products specification was worked out in
cooperation with the customer. The solution for the
testing system is based on a digital readout (QC 220)
in conjunction with a state-of-the-art stereo microscope
and materials research microscope as well as
a Kappa colour camera system (Firewire) with the
corresponding image editing and measuring software.
The required coordinate table was developed
and commissioned by Ryf Ltd. A maintenance contract
ensures the reliability of the testing instrument.
Siemens
Vision system for the electronics industry. The system
supplied by Ryf and designed for measuring quills
operates with a measuring accuracy of 1µm.
The quills, consisting of a forming component and an
index dial disk, are used for optoelectronic rotation
measurements. The disks to be measured in this case
feature 720 graduation marks.
In a pneumatic concentricity testing system developed
and manufactured by Ryf Ltd. the KAPPA image
processing system checks the index dial disk for true
running in relation to the quill axis. For this purpose,
32 sections of the disk are shot in the course of one
360° rotation. A coaxial illuminator with high-resolu-

tion optics and a Kappa CCD camera with a high resolution
produce optimum images. The system compares
the pictures with each other; then the readings
are evaluated according to prior tolerance definitions
and marked with a “good” or “bad” signal, depending
on the result. The results are saved in a table together
with batch numbers.
Beispiel Aeschlimann
Aeschlimann Ltd. ranks among the top specialists for
high-precision turned parts. Following the principle
that “absolute top performance in quality will position
us in an internationally leading position” the
company is constantly striving for improvements.
The stand-alone testing machine featuring portal
handling used at Aeschlimann allows the fully automatic
testing of five different types of valve plates
after numerous precisely defined specifications,
measuring tolerances and quality standards. This

automatic test equipment has been designed with
an autonomous SPC control unit, while the vision
system is from Ryf. It contains one camera each for
top and bottom view, as well as three cameras positioned
around the object to be inspected, at 120°
from each other. These three cameras are used to
inspect the cone, edges and shaft for faults. Depending
on the type, the shaft is measured simultaneously.
The cameras report their quality analysis directly to
the control system in the form of good or bad signals.
After the inspection process, the object to be
inspected is discharged into the corresponding box.
The development of this highly automated quality
control system using a total of five cameras was a
challenge to all those involved. The complex system
was created in close cooperation between Aeschlimann
Ltd. and Ryf Ltd.

Ryf maintenance contract
Malfunctions in the economic production process
need to be ruled out as much as possible. Measuring
and testing instruments require regular maintenance:
they need to be adjusted, cleaned, calibrated and
serviced.
With the Ryf maintenance contract, all your instruments
are regularly cleaned, re-adjusted, calibrated
in accordance with the ISO standard, and provided
with inspection records on request. The maintenance
interval is defined in agreement with the customer
and can range between 6, 12, 18 and 24 months,
depending on the device or system. This service is
brand-independent and applies to all common
systems.
Straumann Group
The internationally operating Straumann Group is a
leading company in oral implantology and dental
tissue regeneration. Over the past 10 years, the Straumann
Group has supplied several millions of implants
world-wide and holds a market share of 25%.
Hundreds of optical devices, testing and measuring
instruments provide this cutting-edge enterprise with
the quality approved according the certified quality
management. The process involves almost exclusively
devices that have been configured and supplied
by Ryf.
In medical technology the reliability of measuring and
testing systems plays a particularly important part.
