Teaching in Multiple Generational Classrooms continued...<br />

Classroom Implementation<br />

At the beginning <strong>of</strong> the semester, it may be<br />

wise to form groups where there is an<br />

intentional diverseness <strong>of</strong> generations. This<br />

provides an opportunity for those in the<br />

class to get to know and understand the<br />

differences between one another. This may<br />

present an opportunity for the millenials to<br />

form learning communities and the<br />

boomers to share some <strong>of</strong> their<br />

experiences. In order to keep all<br />

generations actively involved in learning, it<br />

may be a good idea to allow students to develop<br />

classroom norms. <strong>The</strong>se norms establish how the class<br />

will operate throughout the semester, and they create a<br />

means for open communication and the exchange <strong>of</strong> ideas<br />

in a respectful manner.<br />

Incorporating technology into the classroom will give the<br />

younger generations an opportunity to collaborate. Gen<br />

Xers and Millenials may have the opportunity to work<br />

with Boomers on various projects utilizing technology,<br />

which will be another opportunity for the three<br />

generations to learn more about each other.<br />

Finally, at the end <strong>of</strong> the semester, allow time for<br />

students to reflect on their experiences. After<br />

implementing some <strong>of</strong> these ideas, it is important to allow<br />

students to engage in an open dialogue about which<br />

course activities were most or least useful in helping them<br />

learn. This also will allow students to gain an<br />
