Greetings from the Board Chair
דברי ראש הועד
Springtime has pleasantly emerged on campuses across America. After an unusually
bleak winter, flowers are in bloom and the earth is green once again. The JTS
Quadrangle has shown new growth and an eruption of color. Spring is also the season
for commencement ceremonies across the country, and JTS is today celebrating its
116th such event.
Well into our second century of educating Jewish leaders, we can appreciate the
analogy of commencement and springtime. Many plants and trees lie apparently
dormant during winter months, all the while experiencing enormous activity beneath
the surface, establishing strong roots and support systems. After years of rigorous
study, preparation, and, perhaps, inadequate time in the sunshine, our students are
today stepping out into the world. Their roots and support systems are linked to Torah
and text, faculty and family. But these are just as essential as water and oxygen-rich air
for growth and development.
Many of today’s graduates first joined us immediately following secondary school.
Others came for professional training after university studies and, in some cases, years
spent following very different career paths. Regardless of the starting point, there is
enormous pride in the ways in which you have blossomed. Your accomplishments to
date offer only a glimpse of your future achievements and contributions.
We welcome you to your new roles as clergy, educators, scholars, and well-informed
members of the community. JTS graduates and faculty have been at the center of
critical discussions for our nation and people for generations. Your education and
insights, founded on our religious traditions and commitment to scholarship, form the
foundation to approach future challenges and opportunities—even those that are not
yet known. Thank you for taking on this responsibility.
Abby Joseph Cohen
Chair of the Board of Trustees
Society of Fellows
אגודת העמיתים
Mr. Martin D. Payson
Created in 1966, the Society of Fellows
is an association of men and women
who have demonstrated devotion to the
highest ideals of Judaism and to the
principles of social justice and concern
for the broader community. They are
people of extraordinary and diverse
talents, who have made an enormous
impact on the welfare of JTS.
Sponsored by
Ms. Michele P. Rosenfield
Dr. Michael B. Greenbaum
“There are three crowns:
the crown of Torah, the
crown of Priesthood,
the crown of Royalty.
The crown of a good
name is superior to
them all.”
[Mishnah, Pirkei Avot 4:17]
You are a singular leader whose tzedakah and good deeds make it possible for others to do good
themselves.
You did not rest on your laurels after your retirement from an extraordinary career in corporate
life, during which you were director, Office of the President, and general counsel of Warner
Communications Inc. and vice chairman of Time Warner Inc., and were instrumental in the
expansion of one of the world’s premier entertainment and media companies. Instead, when
UJA-Federation called on your services beyond your active and generous philanthropy, you
brought your administrative talent and expertise to bear on the critical matter of health care and
embarked on a second career devoted to helping troubled hospitals. As chairman of the board of
Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn and chairman of the Nassau Health Care Corporation
in Nassau County, New York, you restored these institutions to vitality so that they can heal the
ailing in the communities they serve.
Your remarkable triumphs in the world of business have always been matched by your sense
of responsibility and generosity in building a better world. You served on the boards of Howard,
Tulane, and New York Universities. As a trustee of The Jewish Museum, you were an inspiration
and catalyst for the development of the annual New York Jewish Film Festival, a collaboration
between the museum and the Film Society of Lincoln Center. You have had a profound impact
on The Jewish Theological Seminary, where your deep understanding of higher education made
your service on the board invaluable. Your wisdom and energy, your hands-on involvement as
Development chair, and your belief in fostering new lay leadership have been instrumental in
strengthening JTS’s ability to cultivate essential support, train future leaders for the Jewish
community, and ensure Jewish continuity.
Our Sages teach us, “Greater than one who does a mitzvah, is one who causes others to do
a mitzvah.” You enable and inspire us all to safeguard education, to provide justice for the
downtrodden and healing for the sick. You walk the path of righteousness.
Honorary Degrees
תארי כבוד
Professor Robert Alter
Doctor of Hebrew Letters, honoris causa
Sponsored by
Mr. Gerald Rosenfeld
Dr. Anne Lapidus Lerner
Through your profound mastery of biblical Hebrew and poet’s sensitivity to language, you have
made extraordinary contributions to our understanding of the Bible and taught us how to truly
read Judaism’s sacred text. Your scholarship has revolutionized perspectives on some of the
principal ideas found in modern Hebrew, American, and European literature.
Class of 1937 Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California at
Berkeley, where you have taught since 1967, you received bachelor’s degrees from Columbia
and, we are proud to say, from JTS, and you earned your master’s degree and doctorate in
Comparative Literature at Harvard University. Since then you have written extensively on
literary aspects of the Bible, the European novel from the eighteenth century to the present,
contemporary American fiction, and modern Hebrew literature, and have devoted book-length
studies to Fielding, Stendhal, and the self-reflexive tradition in the novel. Your twenty-two
published books include two prize-winning volumes on biblical narrative and poetry and awardwinning
translations of Genesis and the Five Books of Moses. You have also written hundreds
of articles, book reviews, and essays on cultural and political issues, and many of your works
have been translated into other languages. Renowned lecturer, in 2009 you received the Robert
Kirsch Award from the Los Angeles Times for lifetime contribution to American letters.
Your extensive influence is profound, and you are a respected member of the Council of Scholars
of the Library of Congress and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. You have taught us
all—university scholars, religious leaders, college freshmen, and the fascinated public. Your
biblical commentaries and translations have enabled us to see the text anew, and in so doing,
revitalize our perspectives on our tradition.
Scholar and literary critic, your passion for and comprehension of the weight, meaning, and
richness of the written word have forever spotlighted the beauty of the Bible and added depth
and vibrancy to the Jewish future.
honorary DEGREES
Professor Menahem Ben-Sasson
Doctor of Hebrew Letters, honoris causa
Sponsored by
Mr. Yale Asbell
Dr. Benjamin R. Gampel
Beloved leader in the State of Israel and luminary in the Jewish community, your personal and
professional integrity have helped you soar from student, lecturer, and professor to respected
member of the Knesset and distinguished thirteenth president of your alma mater, the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem.
Professor of History at the Hebrew University—and chair of the Ben-Zvi Institute from 2002 to
2006—you have contributed mightily to the academic study of medieval Jewry in Muslim lands.
You have shared your deep understanding of the characteristics distinguishing that society
from other Jewish societies by building a historical picture upon a variety of literary, legal,
and medieval sources, and have worked at length on collecting and deciphering fragments of
manuscripts found in the Cairo Genizah. You have also specialized in the study of Maimonides,
social and intellectual history, Geonic responsa and texts, and Saadya Gaon’s Book of Decrees
and Deeds.
You taught culturally deprived children on kibbutz and were the educational director of a school
for gifted children during your undergraduate years. You earned a PhD in Jewish History and
Philosophy, studied at Cambridge, and then began your career in academia, eventually becoming
deputy dean, Faculty of the Humanities, and rector of the Hebrew University. You also taught
at Bar-Ilan University and lectured at The Jewish Theological Seminary. Author of numerous
books, scholarly chapters, and articles, you became an editor or member of the editorial boards
of many important publications. Along the way, your research and formidable contributions were
acknowledged with awards and scholarships, including a Rothschild Fellowship and the Ben-Zvi
Prize for the Study of Jewish Heritage. In 2005, you were elected president of the World Union
for Jewish Studies and to the Knesset, where you were appointed chairman of the Constitution,
Law, and Justice Committee.
You have led a life dedicated to Medinat Yisra’el and ‘Am Yisra’el, and become one of the great
contemporary figures of the Jewish world.
6

honorary DEGREES
Professor Sara Japhet
Doctor of Hebrew Letters, honoris causa
Sponsored by
Mrs. Floy Brown Kaminski
Dr. Robert A. Harris
Illustrious educator, you are widely considered Israel’s leading female biblical scholar and its
highest ranking female academic. Your extraordinary contribution to Judaic scholarship and
the broader academic community has helped to elucidate major themes in the accounts of the
biblical period, the literature and religion of the Bible, and the chronicle of Jewish exegesis.
Distinguished Yehezkel Kaufmann Professor Emeritus of Bible at the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem, you were born in Tel Aviv, raised in Petach-Tikvah, and have devoted your life to
exploring and teaching the birthright of the Jewish people. Over the years, you have broadened
the scope of your research to include the status and history of women in the biblical period and
the study of Bible in modern Israel. You moved easily from Hebrew University doctoral graduate
to lecturer to full professor, while sharing your wisdom as a fellow or visiting professor at
The Jewish Theological Seminary and universities such as Oxford, University of Pennsylvania,
Cambridge, and Harvard. Chairperson and member of innumerable academic committees, you
served as head of Hebrew University’s Bible Department and Institute of Jewish Studies and as
director of the Jewish National and University Library.
You have edited and written countless scholarly articles and books, including The Commentary
of Rabbi Samuel ben Meir on the Song of Songs and I and II Chronicles—A Commentary. You
have served as president of the World Union of Jewish Studies; editor of Shnaton—An Annual
for Biblical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies; and on the editorial board of Jewish Women: A
Comprehensive Historical Encyclopedia. To your students you remain a sage guide and counselor,
giving unstintingly of your time. In 2004, you were awarded Israel’s highest honor, the Israel
Prize, for Biblical Studies.
You are a gift to your children and grandchildren, and have ennobled the academic, Israeli, and
Jewish communities. Your efforts have erected lasting monuments in the field of Jewish Studies.
7

honorary DEGREES
Mr. Gershon Kekst
Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa
Sponsored by
Robert S. Rifkind, Esq.
Dr. Alan Mintz
You are a steadfast pillar of wisdom and humanity, a blessing to JTS and to klal Yisrael.
Frequently called the dean of corporate public relations, you are the founder and leader of Kekst
and Company, one of the most successful firms of its kind in the world. You are counted among
the most powerful advisers and counselors, using your influence to act as the conscience of
business. It is your own strength of character, rooted in the Jewish values you learned from your
parents, who were Hebrew teachers, that has enabled you both to prosper in corporate life and
to demonstrate the crucial importance of character to your peers in the world of commerce.
You have focused your remarkable philanthropic efforts on Jewish communal education and
science, endowing professorships and serving on the boards of Brandeis University and of the
Weizmann Institute of Science, where you also chaired the board, and you have been named a
Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Your positive impact upon The Jewish Theological Seminary is unparalleled. You have been
a member of the Board of Trustees for over twenty years, serving as board chairman for an
unprecedented eighteen productive years, and are now the chair emeritus. You have guided
JTS during some of the institution’s most important growth and restoration. Your stewardship
included the construction of Kripke Tower, transforming the fire-scarred former library
stacks into the campus’s signature building; the dedication of the Women’s League Seminary
Synagogue; the establishment of the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education,
the largest graduate program of its kind in North America; and numerous other milestones and
accomplishments. Your name is inscribed on a pillar in the JTS courtyard, honoring the great
strength and support you have been for our institution.
You are one of the great Jewish leaders of your generation, and your commitment to Jewish
values has been your compass throughout a life of rare accomplishments and profound service
to the Conservative Movement, the Jewish people, and all of American society.
8

honorary DEGREES
Professor Menahem Schmelzer
Doctor of Hebrew Letters, honoris causa
Sponsored by
Mrs. Dorothy Tapper Goldman
Dr. Raymond P. Scheindlin
You have added substantially to the world of knowledge as a scholar, and safeguarded treasures
of Jewish literary heritage for future generations.
You are one of the world’s foremost authorities on the Jewish book. A renowned specialist in
medieval Hebrew literature, you have published extensively on Ashkenazi piyyut. Currently the
Albert B. and Bernice Cohen Professor Emeritus of Medieval Hebrew Literature and Jewish
Bibliography at The Jewish Theological Seminary, where you have been a member of the faculty
for over four decades, you were the institution’s librarian for over twenty years, a position you
held at the time of The JTS Library fire in 1966. Born in Hungary, deported by the Nazis to a
concentration camp in childhood, you returned to your native country after the war and studied
in schools and yeshivot. You began studying Semitic languages at the University of Budapest,
before once again suffering the horrors of anti-Semitism and tyranny. Imprisoned for a year
during the Stalinist regime’s anti-Zionist campaign, your experience did not deter you from
entering the Jewish Theological Seminary of Budapest after your release.
You led the way in preserving and restoring The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary
after the calamitous fire, recruiting expert catalogers, ensuring the construction of temporary
structures, securing donations of books so students at JTS would be able to study and conduct
research properly when classes began the following academic year. Your many publications and
merits as a scholar have won you accolades, including a Guggenheim fellowship, an honorary
degree from the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies in Chicago, and an appointment as visiting
senior distinguished scholar at the John W. Kluge Center in the Library of Congress. The
secretary of state of the Ministry of Culture and Education of Hungary, where you withstood
injustice, recently presented you with the Alexander Scheiber Prize.
Your love of knowledge has helped sustain you through terrible persecution, and your efforts in
rescuing and rebuilding The Library mark you as a scholar of singular devotion.
