117th Commencement Exercises
May 19, 2011

Greetings from the Chancellor
דברי הנגיד
Jewish tradition has a long history of endings that mark beginnings and beginnings that are
never quite a start but much more a continuation. The Talmud famously begins on page two. The
reading of the Torah is begun again the very moment it ends. And, of course, we will never know
for certain whether our Torah begins at the very beginning—whatever that could be—or in the
beginning of this stage of creation: the one awaiting our words of “let there be,” our partnership
in the fulfillment of what is there begun, the innovation and imagination only we can bring, our
creative energies and wisdom.
As a young person one rejoices in that role, flexes muscles of mind and heart, sighs with relief
that there is still work for us to do, that it has not all been finished (often badly) before we arrived
upon the scene. Middle age preserves that sense but, in my experience at least, adds another:
thankfulness that we do not have to begin at the beginning but can build on the good work of our
predecessors and especially our ancestors. Tradition may have been a burden for Immanuel Kant,
who in the very first sentence of his essay “What Is Enlightenment?” called on his readers to throw
off all “tutelage,” escape the bonds of the past holding them. That is never how I experienced
tradition. The study of the Jewish past, and especially its texts; the joys of Jewish ritual and the
Jewish calendar; the combination of clarity and ambiguity of Jewish teachings—all these provided
a discipline in which, I knew, true freedom can be found.
At The Jewish Theological Seminary, we are committed to knowledge of where Jews and others
have been so intimate and nuanced that, when we take those paths forward to meet present
and future challenges, we know it really is the past we are carrying forward and not an entirely
new road of our own invention. Knowledge of what has been thought and accomplished must be
thorough, textured, and critical if it is to serve us well. Apologetics are not adequate. Superficiality
and slogans will quickly prove useless. Our task—whether as rabbis or cantors, educators or
scholars, leaders of today or leaders-in-training for tomorrow—is to help Jews and the world build
and maintain true communities, and to fill those communities—those lives—with meaning rich
and deep enough to live for and live by. JTS is dedicated to training Jewish leaders who share this
commitment and possess the passion and skill required to transmit it to a new generation of Jews.
I hope we have done that for those marking completion and beginning today. May the strength we
have gained together help to strengthen us and the world when and where our learning, creativity,
and commitment are most needed.
Dr. Barry W. Holtz
Distinguished journalist, raconteur, and best-selling author, you have left a lasting imprint on the
hearts and minds of readers and media watchers by confronting fundamental questions of the
human condition in your deeply moving and accessible works. You have guided individuals and
communities in explorations of how to live a life worth living, and taught about the importance
of faith and service. Adding action to your inspired words, you have made extraordinary
contributions to American society and the citizens of the world.
Currently host of the Mitch Albom Show on Michigan’s WJR radio, you are an award-winning
syndicated columnist for the Detroit Free Press, celebrated commentator on ESPN: The Sports
Reporters and SportsCenter, musician and songwriter, and playwright. Your books have sold
more than 28 million copies and been published in 42 languages. Tuesdays with Morrie spent
four years on the New York Times bestseller list and remains the publishing industry’s bestselling
memoir to date, and The Five People You Meet in Heaven became the most successful
hard cover first novel in the United States written for adults. Building on your education at Akiba
Hebrew Academy, both volumes brought Jewish teachings to the world in a way that touched
the emotions and concerns of people beyond measure. Three of your books were produced for
television—two by Oprah Winfrey—with Morrie winning four Emmys. Have a Little Faith, your
work in part about the JTS-ordained rabbi of your childhood, was selected by Oprah.com as
2009’s best nonfiction book, and your standing-room-only lecture at The Jewish Theological
Seminary did much to remind us about the value of superior and compassionate leadership.
You have launched charitable organizations such as the Dream Fund and A Time to Help, and
perform with the band Rock Bottom Remainders, which includes writers Stephen King and Amy
Tan, to raise funds for literacy projects.
You are an esteemed scholar of the heart and of the soul. Informed by Jewish values and ideals,
Dr. Carol K. Ingall
Prized educator, writer, lecturer, and expert in religious pedagogy and Jewish-Christian
relations, your work has played a signal role in enhancing the ability of both Jews and Christians
to better appreciate the core values and concerns of the other, and to view each other with
of your own tradition.
You have been the respected Skinner and McAlpin Professor of Practical Theology at Union
to which you are devoted.
You are a loving peacemaker who has aided student and teacher alike. You have brought
threatened to take root, and convey a powerful belief in a more benevolent and abundant future.
honorary degrees
Dr. Deborah E. Lipstadt
Doctor of Hebrew Letters, honoris causa
Sponsored by
Mr. Yale Asbell
Dr. Stefanie B. Siegmund
Acclaimed author, foremost expert on Holocaust denial, modern anti-Semitism, and the
Eichmann trial, your groundbreaking work preserves and defends the sacred memory of the
Shoah in the face of malevolent attempts to deny the reality of this immense national catastrophe.
You are currently Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies at Emory University
in Atlanta, where you created the Institute for Jewish Studies. As an academic, you have won
numerous awards for your teaching in addition to the many scholarly honors you have earned for
your important research illuminating how America reacted to the persecution of European Jewry
during the Holocaust era, and how there are those today who, by distorting history, seek to harm
the Jewish people. Your book Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth And Memory, the
first full-length study of its subject, is universally acclaimed and has been published around the
world. David Irving sued you for calling him a Holocaust denier, and put not only your work, but the
factuality of the Holocaust itself, on trial. You have earned the admiration and gratitude of Jews
the world over for your courageous and successful stance in the libel suit. Your writings have won
such distinctions as the National Jewish Book Award and widespread accolades from publishers
and reviewers, and you are a frequent contributor to and widely quoted in major newspapers.
President Clinton appointed you to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, and you helped
design the Holocaust Memorial Museum’s section dedicated to the American response to the
Shoah. Members of Congress have called upon you to consult on political responses to Holocaust
denial, and you have served on the United States State Department Advisory Committee on Religious
Freedom Abroad. President George W. Bush invited you to join a small delegation representing the
White House at the 60th anniversary commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz. As a fellow of
the American Academy of Jewish Research, nominated and elected by your peers, you are justly
counted among the most distinguished scholars of Judaic studies at American universities.
In your extraordinary contributions to Jewish scholarship, the United States, and contemporary
Jewish life, you stand for truth in the face of falsehood, shining forth a light against darkness.
4

honorary degrees
Dr. John S. Ruskay
Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa
Sponsored by
Ms. Alisa R. Doctoroff
Dr. Michael B. Greenbaum
Tirelessly devoted to compassion and justice, you are a model for us all. It has been your steadfast
vocation to nurture inspired Jewish communities so that larger numbers can experience the
ability of Jewish life to sanctify human existence and invest it with meaning.
In your fourth decade of professional leadership of the North American Jewish community, you
now stand at the helm of UJA-Federation of New York, the largest community-based philanthropy
in the world, serving as its CEO and executive vice president since 1999. There, you have enhanced
its ability to help Jews in need wherever they are found, and to support organizations that involve
Jews with their rich heritage. This is the capstone of a career dedicated to the good, from its
roots in your undergraduate days in the Civil Rights Movement and working alongside Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. in Montgomery, Alabama, through holding senior positions at the 92nd Street
YM-YWHA and Society for the Advancement of Judaism, among others. And you made an abiding
contribution as Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs here at JTS that is still felt today.
You have upheld areyvut, responsibility that you characterize as sacred, to the whole of our city
and our people. You have reminded us that we must have institutions that support compelling
Jewish initiatives and communities, that beckon with the truth that engagement in Jewish life
ennobles and enriches us as individuals. And in leading UJA-Federation to great success, calling
for placing social workers in synagogues, authoring numerous articles on critical issues facing
us, and in a myriad of other ways, you have demonstrated that these goals are not beyond what
we can achieve.
Countless Jewish lives have grown deeper in purpose as a result of your many years of passionate
service. Yours has been a most eloquent voice in teaching us how the American Jewish community
can thrive in an open society through unwavering commitment to core Jewish values.
The Jewish Theological Seminary
The Jewish Theological Seminary, one of the world’s leading centers of Jewish
learning, integrates rigorous academic scholarship and teaching with a commitment to
strengthening Jewish tradition, Jewish lives, and Jewish communities.
JTS articulates and transmits a vision of Judaism that is learned and passionate,
pluralist and authentic, traditional and egalitarian; one that is thoroughly grounded in
Jewish texts, history, and practices, and fully engaged with the societies and cultures of
the present.
The leaders trained by JTS—rabbis, cantors, scholars, educators, communal
professionals, and lay activists imbued with this vision and prepared to meet the
challenges of the 21st century—serve Conservative Judaism, the vital religious center
for North American Jewry, and our society as a whole.
