The denomination „Spanish Armada“ is 

derived from the word Armada (originially 

from Spanish armada, the gunman) which commonly meant „Armed Forces“. 

At the time of this sea-fleet, there were no modern measuring instruments. 

How then was it possible that one was able to reach the desired destination? 

With the aid of compasses and sextants. Those very important instruments 

served as positioning and navigation guides.
