INTERACTIVE ADVERTISING DESIGN
The BFA in both advertising design and graphic design
is a professional degree. Our goal is to give our students
the knowledge, skills, resources and support in concept,
strategy, techniques, practices, and methods to insure their
successful entry into and continuing success in
these exciting fields.
The curriculum is designed to give graduates a competitive
edge and a sound basis for professional achievement.
After taking a foundation of visual arts courses in drawing,
typography, art history, the fundamentals of design and
technologies, students then pursue an area of specialization
by taking courses in identity, branding, advertising design,
web design, motion graphics, among other choices.
A concentration is developed with guidance from a
faculty adviser.
The program includes extensive studio and computer lab
experience, presentations and reviews by professional designers
and practical work experience for real clients through in-house
internships in print and screen-based design.
In addition, students in the program are encouraged to
pursue internships and part-time employment in the field, to
participate in events sponsored by professional organizations,
and to meet design professionals during seminars, portfolio
reviews, and other special events —including the world-class
Thinking Creatively Design Conference.
The program concludes with a course in which students create
professional portfolios enabling them to competently and
confidently enter the job market.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
The Bachelor of Industrial Design (BID) is a professional
degree. The goal is to give our students the best training
and support possible in the techniques, practices and
methods of industrial design to insure their continuing
success. The curriculum is designed with strict adherence
to the educational standards of the Industrial Design
Society of America (IDSA). The program is intended to
provide graduates with a competitive edge and a sound
background for professional achievement.
After a solid foundation of general design, visual arts,
and art history courses, the students undertake the
program in Industrial Design. Our curriculum offers
extensive opportunities for hands on design studios, and
computer application experiences; along with presentations
and evaluations by professional designers and the support of
practical experiences through the internship requirement.
The program concludes with a course in which students create
professional portfolios enabling them to competently and
confidently enter the job market.
In addition, students are encouraged to participate in programs
and events sponsored by the Industrial Design Society of
America along with additional local, regional and national
opportunities to meet design professionals during seminars,
workshops and portfolio reviews. The Thinking Creatively
Design Conference, and other activities are also made available
to students.
INTERIOR DESIGN
The BFA in Interior Design is a professional degree and
is accredited by the Council for Interior Design and
Accreditation (CIDA). Interior Design is a muli-faceted
profession in which creative and technical solutions
are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior
environment. These solutions are functional, enhance
the quality of life and culture of the occupants, and are
aesthetically attractive. Designs are created in response to
and coordinated with the building shell, and acknowledge
the physical location and social context of the project.
Designs must adhere to code and regulatory
requirements, and encourage the principles of
environmental sustainability.
The interior design process follows a systematic and
coordinated methodology, including research, analysis and
integration of knowledge into the creative process, whereby the
needs and resources of the client are satisfied to produce an
interior space that fulfills the project goals.
Interior design includes a scope of services performed by
a professional design practitioner, qualified by means of
education, experience, and examination, to protect and
enhance the life, health, safety and welfare of the public.
The program concludes with a course in which students create
professional portfolios enabling them to competently and
confidently enter the job market.
One of the most beneficial aspects of attending Kean were the
relationships that developed among my fellow classmates and
our professors. We became like a family — one I could look to for
inspiration and honest, constructive opinions. This network of
people helped me land my first creative job and have been a
supportive group throughout my career.
MICHAEL DELSORDI, BFA 2008
The faculty in the Robert Busch School of Design at Kean
University help students be successful in their studies and
upon graduation! The faculty bring students together not just
to learn but for valuable interactions among themselves as
well as interacting on a professor-to-student basis. The results
are professional communication skills and lifelong personal
relationships. I can speak for the student population of RBSD by
saying to all the professors, every adviser, each coordinator and
our director — your commitment to our program and your passion
for design is apparent in all the work you do. You are greatly
appreciated by your students! I will always remember the Robert
Busch School of Design faculty as my inspiration for my career.
OUR MISSION
The School of Design
(and its collective programs) at Kean University has several related goals
that are aligned with the University Mission.
The School of Design faculty
is dedicated to providing an exceptional educational
experience while fostering the knowledge, skills, creativity,
and professionalism necessary to prepare graduates for
careers as professional designers. As such, we are devoted to
academic rigor, curricular innovation, critical thought, and
teaching excellence. The School of Design is aligned with
and accredited by the philosophy and goals of two external
accrediting organizations: Council for Interior Design
Accreditation (CIDA) and National Schools of Art and
Design (NASAD).
The School of Design mission also undertakes to inform the
public about the critical contribution that designers make in
changing the world and to this end we are also dedicated to
reaching out to the wider community through programs of
public information and service.
With a broad foundation in liberal arts (GE), a core
foundation in the basics of design elements and principles,
a thorough grounding in design concepts, artistry, craft, and
technologies, followed by a concentration in selected area of
design, the School of Design programs of study offer students
intensive theory and practice and an integrated curriculum
to provide them with the tools they need to help shape the
future of human lives.
The School of Design collective programs have a focus
on critical and creative thinking, aesthetic awareness,
effective use of technology, awareness of sustainability
relative to the profession, diversity and social sensitivity,
ethical professional practices, career opportunity, and
global perspectives.
AWARD WINNING FACULTY :
An architect by education, has been teaching in the field of
Interior Design since 2003. His focus is on helping students
become problem solvers through the use of fundamental
drawing techniques and the exploration of threedimensional
space. In an era where technology seemingly
rules the work place, he stresses that it is the mind that
ultimately creates, not keyboards or pencils.
He is the author of “The 18 COMMANDments: The Version-
Independent Way to Creatively Draft, Draw, and Design
with AutoCAD,” which is intended to teach technical
drawing (commonly perceived as sterile and less personal)
in such a way that allows free expression.
An educator, designer, artist, researcher and writer, Rose
Gonnella is the Executive Director of The Robert Busch Director
School of Design. She teaches courses in identity design,
senior design portfolio, studio skills, and computer technology,
inclusive of developing the school’s web design curriculum.
Gonnella is currently on the executive board of the Art Directors
Club of New Jersey and serves as the Director of the Kean
University / ADCNJ Thinking Creatively/design conference,
www.thinkingcreatively.org.
As a designer, Gonnella has been the Creative Director of The
Kean Review and worked with both alumni and students on the
award-winning design for the journal. She also directs the Kean
Cre8tive, a for-profit design studio in the Robert Busch School
of Design.
In addition to her work in design, Gonnella is also an illustrator.
Her drawings have appeared recently in The Santa Fe House
(Rizzoli). And, Gonnella’s work is in several private and public
collections including among others: National Museum of
American Art, Washington DC, Marriott Corporation, Princeton,
NJ, Museum of Art and Archaeology, University of Missouri,
Is an educator, graphic designer, calligrapher, and lettering artist.
He has been deeply involved in the development and growth of
professional design programs at Kean for over twenty years.
Martin Holloway has spent a career engaging the challenge of
how best to educate a professional designer. The acquiring of
technical skills and professional knowledge is fundamental. Still
more important, since designers create the images, objects and
environments of everyday life, they must have a broad knowledge
of human culture. And even more critical, they must be able to
engage their creative instincts. A complete education for the
designer balances these professional and liberal arts components.
Professor Holloway was a professional graphic designer in studio
and corporate settings before coming to Kean. He has continued to
practice as an independent consultant, producing award-winning
designs for a wide variety of business clients. He has received over
twenty-five industry awards for his work. Examples of his work
appear in several books on graphic design.
Is an Architect, Interior Designer and educator. He has been active
in the design field after receiving his BFA in Interior Design from
Kean University and an M.Arch from New Jersey Institute of
Technology in Architecture. He teaches upper level studio courses
and Lighting. He developed the AutoCAD component in the program
and also teaches AutoCAD 2D, 3D and Revit computer-aided
design software.
Professor LaCapra has been published in the Journal of Interior
Design as co-author of the article “Designing Cognitive Stimulating
Environments for Infants and Toddlers”. He has presented work at
the Interior Designers Educators Council and TEANJ conferences.
Kean University has awarded Professor LaCapra with the Students
Partnering with Faculty grant. “Out of the Dark: Designing a Solar
Powered Light to be used by the Homeless” is an interdisciplinary
research project involving Interior Design and Industrial Design.
The project involves interviews with social workers, industrial
designers, Interior designers and related professions to better
understand and help the homeless.
Professor LaCapra is the faculty advisor for the Interior Design
Collaborative (IDC). The IDC is a student outreach group with
yearly projects that helps non-profit organizations with Interior
Design issues at their facility.
Professor O’Shea is actively involved in numerous professional
organizations, in which she holds leadership positions. She
Education, and twice has won the Presidential Excellence
Award in Scholarship from Kean University. As a designer
and brand strategist, Landa works with Mike Sickinger, a Kean
alumnus and CCO of Lava Dome Creative, as well as being the
principal of her own design consultancy, robinlanda.com
Since my arrival at the institution, my philosophy has been
that the best way to influence the future success of the design
majors is by spending as much time as possible working
side-by-side with them in the studios and laboratories. I
voluntarily keep open lab sessions on my professional days
during the week, as well as Saturdays and/or Sundays. In
addition to design majors having vital access to studios during
non-class times, they also see me doing my own work, applying
and practicing the same things I discuss with them in class.
Some of my service to the institution has been as follows:
4 terms (including currently) on the University Senate
(Vice-chair); 3 terms on the General Education Committee
(Co-chair); 2 terms on the University Curriculum Committee
(secretary); Chair of Distance Learning Committee, Chair of
Middle States sub-committee on Student Support Services;
Chair and Co-chair of major search committees; and, dozens of
other elected and appointed positions at the School, College
and University levels.Wall Street Journal’s Creative
Leaders competition.
Is an educator and design practitioner. As a Full Professor,
and Coordinator of the Interior Design Program, she teaches
courses in, Introduction to Interior Design, Interior Design
Studio I & II and Senior Projects II/Portfolio, and Design & the
Built Environemnt. As a design practitioner, she has worked
in areas of corporate space planning, contract design, retail
design and healthcare facilities. Her students have produced
award winning work and received scholarships and monetary
rewards in the regional competitions such as, the IIDA Design
Competition, the NJ American Society of Interior Designers
Student Design Competition, and the Illuminating Engineering
Society National Student Lighting Design Competition.
Teaches courses in graphic design at the Robert Busch School
of Design, Kean University where he is also the founding
director of The Design Center, which has won numerous
awards for its exhibitions, publications, and products in the
various fields of design.
Professor Robbins is an award-winning writer and the author
of 24 books in the areas of mystery science fiction, puzzles and
humor, and visual communications. His cartoons, illustrations,
graphics, and games have appeared in dozens of publications
and exhibitions and his unique series of mystery jigsaw
puzzles has millions of fans around the world. His work can be
THE ROBERT BUSCH SCHOOL OF DESIGN (RBSD)
is the best of design programs. The professors truly care about our
success and growth and are always thinking of new ways to ignite
our creativity. All of the professors are practicing professionals
but take the time to be our mentors outside of the classroom as
well. And, unlike other colleges where there is competition among
classmates, we grow and learn from each other with helpful
constructive criticism.
Without RBSD, I don't believe I would have developed such
keen conceptual and creative design skills. Also, I would not have
been involved in the Thinking Creatively Conference that Kean
hosts each year with the Art Directors Club of New Jersey. In
addition to the great courses, the Robert Busch School of Design
has many extra-curricula activities, events, and resources to help
students become the best we can be.
JENNIFER MIRANDA, BFA 2011
A lot of students can't wait to get out of college and open up a new
chapter in the real world; I, on the other hand, did not want to leave
college. This was because of the amazing program at Robert Busch
School of Design at Kean University. Not only does the design program
provide you with challenges that stimulate your creative growth,
interactions with real clients, and the essential "must knows" of the
real design world, but you also get a nurturing experience – one-on-one
attention from outstanding professors who have professional credentials.
What distinguishes RBSD from other programs is the undivided
attention each individual gets from their mentors/ professors. I can
honestly say I felt that I was part of a team or even more of a family with
my fellow students and professors. I am very pleased with my decision
to attend the RBSD at Kean University. Kean University imparted the
knowledge, experience and confidence to attain my goal of becoming a
professional designer.
I LOVE RBSD and all of the talented individuals that
are a part of it!
CONFERENCE ++++++
The Thinking Creatively Conference
is a two-day event created to provide access to
excellence. The conference brings together the best
and brightest designers and all sorts of experimental,
innovative thinkers — for the purpose of providing an
enriching, exceptional (the presenters are world-class)
and accessible (it’s affordable and local!) experience
that includes: presentations, small group discussions,
exhibits, workshops, networking, inter-disciplinary pro/
student charrette, and various and sundry goodies.
thinkingcreatively.org
The Design Center at Kean University
created in 1998 to educate + inform students, educators,
professional designers, and the public about the key role
of design in society and the ways in which design makes a
difference in our lives.
The center is dedicated to design in the broadest sense
— as the process by which we manifest our creativity in
the world through communication, shelter, promotion,
products, and information.
Each year the design center undertakes a series of
exhibitions, publications, products, services, and programs
to fulfill this mission and we are continually expanding our
scope and vision. kean.edu/~designct
The Design Studio at Kean University
is both an advanced service learning course taken for credit
by students in the BFA Graphic Design major and an active
design studio providing communication design services to
the University and to the non-profit community at large. The
Design Studio has been in continuous operation since 1975.
In that time it has produced hundreds of projects for regional
non-profit organizations and institutions, particularly those
offering social, medical, educational and cultural services.
The quality of graphic design provided by the studio, as a
service of the professional BFA degree program, would be
prohibitively costly for the non-profit clients of the studio.
For the students this on-the-job experience is unique
and invaluable. kean.edu/~destudio
Campus School West /CSW/
