A Guide to Legacy and Planned Giving
Message from
the President and
Vice President
FOUNDED IN 1870 KEBLE is now one of the largest and most successful of the
Oxford colleges. Keble remains true to its founders’ intentions “to extend access
to the University more widely, with a continuing commitment to inclusiveness”.
Admission to the then new college was to depend on neither class nor wealth; this
is still the case today.
For generations of students Keble has helped make their time at University
challenging and fulfilling. Without our support present and future generations will
not be so fortunate. Douglas Price fully understood this and having devoted his life
to the College continued to support it by leaving a large residual legacy in his will.
I invite you to add your name to the long and honourable list of donors and like my
predecessor, Andreas Whittam Smith, do as I have done – become a member of
the Douglas Price Society by making a bequest to the College in your will. Such
support enables Keble to continue its commitment to inclusiveness and the highest
of standards.
By way of appreciation, members of the Society and their guests are invited to an
enjoyable event in the College each year. I urge you to join and look forward to
welcoming you as a member.
Andrew Pengelly (1961)
President
AS ONE OF THE FIRST female undergraduates to attend Keble in 1979, my
Oxford experience was certainly memorable and hugely enjoyable. Douglas Price
was my History tutor. It was a combination of my regard for him and my affection
for the College which led me to make a bequest to Keble in my will.
There is no barrier to joining the Society. A written letter of intent, not legally binding
I might add, making the College a beneficiary in your will is sufficient to gain
membership. The Society merely wishes to celebrate the College and the positive
academic and social contribution it has made and continues to make in our lives. By
joining the Douglas Price Society you will help protect and nurture the College’s future.
My various career roles see me meeting people in the EU and Africa and it is
always special to come across a Keble Old Member or friend. The President and
I hope to increase the Society’s reach across the breadth and depth of the Old
Membership. We welcome your views, so do make contact via the Alumni and
Development Office.
Why make a
bequest to Keble?
Perhaps like others you:
• would like to give something back to
the College because you believe that
your life has been transformed by your
Keble experience
Cartoon extract from a JCR caricature book
• would like your philanthropy to have an
impact and believe that supporting the
education of future generations is the best
way to bring about positive change
• recognise the growing importance of
philanthropic support in securing a
sustainable future for the College
• would like to make the best possible and
most tax-efficient gift, which will benefit your
family and the College.
A WILL IS THE LAST and for some the most practical
and affordable way to make a significant contribution to the
College. Collectively such personal philanthropy has the
power to secure the work of the College and the University
well into the future.
If you have already made a will, the simplest way to make
a bequest to Keble is to add a codicil. An example can be
found on the insert with this brochure.
“I have never regretted my decision to
apply to Keble and have many fabulous
memories of my undergraduate
days. I hope that by leaving a modest
amount in my will I will be helping
future students from a wide range
of backgrounds to enjoy the Keble
experience.”
Dr Dominique Spillett (1986), UK
The impact
of Legacy Giving
A gift through your will creates an enduring educational legacy, allowing
Keble to undertake new initiatives, broaden its reach and ensure its
continuing contribution to a world-class university.
“...when we began to think about our
priorities it quickly became clear that
education is key if the arts are to thrive
and social conditions are to improve.
That, along with our fond gratitude for
our years in Oxford, is why our principal
legacies will go to our respective
colleges, and why I became a member
of the Douglas Price Society.”
Old Member (1971), USA
THROUGH THE CENTURIES philanthropy has played
a vital part in the Oxford success story and will have
contributed to your experiences and time here. The College
was founded by public subscription in 1870, and continued
to grow with the aid of legacies and gifts. The ARCO and
Sloane Robinson buildings, and the Hayward and de
Breyne Quads, could not have been built without substantial
contributions from friends of the College, providing much
needed teaching and accommodation space as well as
cultural facilities to allow for a full and broad education.
A donation to Keble creates opportunities and enables future
generations of students to realise their potential.
OXFORD PLAYS A VITAL ROLE in improving
society, in educating the next generation and
researching solutions to pressing scientific
and social problems. Keble is taking a lead by
establishing the Keble Advanced Studies Centre,
the first of its kind in Oxford. The Advanced Studies
Centre promotes collaborative research from
Fellows and students across a range of subjects,
showing how the humanities and sciences together
can find new ways of thinking that benefit the wider
University and problem-solving the world over. The
Keble Advanced Studies Centre is central to the
College’s Vision for 2020 – Ideas without boundaries,
which aims to celebrate Keble’s 150th anniversary
by securing the College’s place in the heart of the
University for generations to come.
“I truly believe in the transformational power
of education. It creates a positive impact on
society at large, both financial and social. I
know Keble will make my legacy work hard for
future members.”
Sholto Hebenton (1957), Canada
THROUGH REGULAR GIVING to the Talbot
Fund, Old Members and friends make a positive
difference to the experiences enjoyed by current
Keble students. Legacy gifts of up to £5,000 will be
directed towards the Talbot Fund. Gifts in excess
of this amount, unless otherwise instructed by
the donor, will be directed towards the continuing
plans of the College, including the development of
the Acland site and the creation of a home for the
Keble Advanced Studies Centre, the endowment of
Fellowship posts and student bursaries.
The importance
of making a will
Writing a will means that your wishes will be fulfilled. The administration of
your estate without a will in place can be extremely complex and expensive.
If you are yet to make a will the following steps may be helpful.
SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE when making a will. In
most cases it is very straightforward to make a will or add a
codicil to an existing will but we urge you to seek professional
advice with personal, confidential guidance tailored to your
needs. Significant tax benefits may also be gained from
Estate Planning. A solicitor who deals with wills and probate,
or a member of a recognised professional organisation,*
can advise on Inheritance Tax (IHT) planning. We hold some
information on IHT planning and can send you a hard copy
at your request. Tax law changes regularly so it is best to
consult a qualified practitioner if your legacy is built around
tax planning. Gifts from a will to a charity do not attract IHT in
the UK.
APPOINT EXECUTORS such as a spouse, partner, friend or
a child of 18 or over. You can also choose a professional, for
example a solicitor or doctor. It is best to have at least
two executors.
VALUING YOUR ESTATE can save time and money
before consulting your solicitor. Calculate the rough value
of your estate by taking into account assets and liabilities to
determine a ‘net’ value. This will also help you prioritise your
planned giving.
NAME BENEFICIARIES AND GUARDIANS. Choose those
whom you wish to benefit from your estate and how much
each individual, organisation, or charity should receive.
Decide whom you wish to act as guardians for any surviving
children should the need arise.
PLAN FOR THE RESIDUE OF YOUR ESTATE. After
specific bequests to friends, relatives and charities, there is
likely to be an amount of money or property left over as the
residue of your estate. Often the residue can form the bulk of
the estate.
COMPLETE THE FORMALITIES IN WRITING. Once
you have discussed your wishes with your solicitor, they will
prepare a draft will for you to consider. When you are satisfied
with the draft and your solicitor has answered any queries
you have, the final copy is prepared for signature. The formal
requirements for signing must be strictly observed or the
will could become invalid. You must sign in the presence of
two witnesses who must then, in your presence (and each
other’s), sign as witnesses adding their full names and
addresses. Witnesses must be neither beneficiaries nor
spouses of beneficiaries. The will must also be dated when
signed. Solicitors will generally keep the original document
without charge. You should keep a copy of the complete
document in a safe place and ensure that your executors
know where the original is kept.
professional body for practitioners in the fields of trusts, estates and related issues.
Types of
Legacy Gifts
A RESIDUAL GIFT is a bequest of part or all of your estate
after other legacies, debts, taxes and expenses have been
paid. This has the advantage of automatically keeping up
with inflation, unlike a pecuniary gift (see below).
The suggested wording* for such a gift to the College is:
“I give the whole (or a percentage share) of the residue of my
estate free from tax to The Warden, Fellows and Scholars of
Keble College in the University of Oxford (“the College”) to be
applied to the general purposes of the College. I direct that the
receipt of the Bursar for the time being of the College shall be a
sufficient discharge to my Executors.”
A PECUNIARY GIFT is the most simple as it allows you
to give a specific sum of money to a named individual or
organisation. Unlike a residual gift, inflation will erode its
value over time so with this type of gift it is best to review
your will every few years. The suggested wording is almost
identical to a residual gift except you insert a specific sum
instead of a percentage share.
A REVERSIONARY OR LIFE INTEREST GIFT enables you
to leave assets to Keble whilst giving dependants the benefit of
them during their lifetime. Your solicitor should advise you on the
drafting of a reversionary legacy.
A SPECIFIC OR NON-MONETARY GIFT leaves a specific
personal possession to an individual or organisation. This
may include property, jewellery, antiques, stocks, shares,
intellectual property, royalties, and works of art.
A DEED OF VARIATION is useful if you find yourself the
beneficiary of a will and you wish to transfer the whole or
part of your inheritance to an individual or organisation. If for
example you chose Keble College then amounts transferred
in this way become free of Inheritance Tax.
*Do contact the Alumni and Development Office if you would like a confidential meeting to
discuss your legacy gift.
to leave a legacy to Keble, please let
Your decision to leave a legacy to Keble College is a very
important one. It attests to your commitment to all that Keble
stands for and creates a lasting memorial to that decision.
Keble believes that such a commitment should not go
unrecognised. We would like to honour and thank our
benefactors during their lifetime. It is for this reason that we
have created the Douglas Price Society (DPS).
Membership is open to all those who have signified their
intention to make a bequest to the College. We welcome
Keble Friends and Old Members from across the globe.
Recognising that such a decision is often private and
personal, the list of members will not be published. Instead
an annual event will be held to enable the College to thank
the Society members and keep them abreast of what is
happening at Keble. It will also provide an opportunity to
meet like-minded peers and their loved ones as well as
enjoy Keble’s present, reflect on its past and help inform and
shape the future. The DPS President, Vice President and the
Warden look forward to meeting all members at this annual
event for which there is a nominal charge.
