THE ROBIN GEFFEN RESEARCH FELLOW AND TUTOR IN PHILOSOPHY<br />
The <strong>College</strong> proposes to elect The <strong>Rob<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Geffen</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Fellow</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tutor</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
Philosophy for a period of four years (fixed-term, non-renewable) from 1 October 2013<br />
or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a fixed-term, non-renewable appo<strong>in</strong>tment<br />
subject to the completion of an <strong>in</strong>itial probationary year. Scholars <strong>in</strong> receipt of another<br />
source of <strong>in</strong>come, who would like a college association, are welcome to apply. The<br />
research <strong>in</strong>terests of the person elected may fall anywhere with<strong>in</strong> the field of Philosophy.<br />
The person elected must be able to teach Logic <strong>and</strong> General Philosophy for Prelims, <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> addition to teach various other Philosophy papers; the ability to teach the Philosophy<br />
of Religion paper would be especially welcome. The teach<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>in</strong>t will be four hours per<br />
week averaged over the academic year. The <strong>Fellow</strong> may be asked to help <strong>in</strong> a limited way<br />
with the academic <strong>and</strong> pastoral organisation of the three jo<strong>in</strong>t schools <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Philosophy <strong>in</strong> which the college admits students, i.e. PPE, Philosophy & Theology, <strong>and</strong><br />

Duties<br />
Applicants should have research expertise <strong>in</strong> anywhere with<strong>in</strong> the field of Philosophy<br />
The teach<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>in</strong>t will be four hours per week averaged over the academic year. The<br />
appo<strong>in</strong>tee will be expected to provide tutorials <strong>and</strong> classes <strong>in</strong> Logic <strong>and</strong> General<br />
Philosophy for Prelims, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> addition to teach various other Philosophy papers<br />
They will also provide support for undergraduate dissertation research. The <strong>Fellow</strong><br />
may be asked to help with the academic <strong>and</strong> pastoral organisation of the subject <strong>and</strong><br />
with undergraduate admissions.<br />
2. Duration<br />
The election will be for four years without extension. The position is subject to a oneyear<br />
probationary period.<br />
3. Stipend<br />
The <strong>Fellow</strong>ship may be held at the same time as a University position such as<br />
Departmental Lecturer or a compatible postdoctoral post. The total remuneration for
the post will be £8,919 (current rate, reviewed annually). In addition, an academic<br />
allowance of £471 p.a. <strong>and</strong> a student allowance of £221 p.a. (both current rates) will<br />
be available.<br />
4. Facilities<br />
The <strong>Fellow</strong> will not be a member of the Govern<strong>in</strong>g Body, but will be a full member<br />
of the Senior Common room <strong>and</strong> be entitled to lunch <strong>and</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner at the Common<br />
Table. A shared teach<strong>in</strong>g room will be available.<br />
5. Selection Criteria<br />
The <strong>College</strong>’s selection criteria for this post are as follows:<br />
i. A strong research record appropriate to the stage of the c<strong>and</strong>idate’s career<br />
with evidence of, or evidence of the potential for produc<strong>in</strong>g, dist<strong>in</strong>guished<br />
research <strong>in</strong> Philosophy.<br />

Evidence that the appo<strong>in</strong>tee would benefit from this as a career development<br />
post.<br />
Ability to carry out undergraduate tutorial teach<strong>in</strong>g as specified.<br />
Ability to undertake pastoral responsibilities <strong>and</strong> assist with other aspects of<br />
the subject’s adm<strong>in</strong>istration as specified.<br />
v. The successful c<strong>and</strong>idate will be required to provide documentary evidence of<br />
their eligibility for employment <strong>in</strong> the UK before start<strong>in</strong>g work with the<br />
<strong>College</strong>.<br />
6. Pension<br />
The <strong>Fellow</strong> will be eligible to jo<strong>in</strong> the Universities Superannuation Scheme.<br />
7. Leave<br />
The <strong>Fellow</strong> will not be entitled to sabbatical leave.<br />
