February 1915 aged 22 years. Born Tenterden. Enlisted Rugby. Eldest son of Richard Avery of<br />

East Court, Tenterden. The address of “Elmdene”, Elmfield, Tenterden is also mentioned.<br />

Richard is buried locally in the St Mildred’s Church Cemetery, Tenterden, <strong>Kent</strong>. Grave reference<br />

Died India 27 th November 1917 aged 41 years. Born Tenterden. Resided Tenterden. Son of<br />

Edwin and Mary Barham of St Michael’s, Tenterden, <strong>Kent</strong>. Albert has no known grave. His name<br />

appears on the Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial, India. Panel reference Face B.<br />

The 5 th battalion was in Mesopatamia (Iraq) in 1917. Albert was probably left behind in India when<br />

the 5 th Buffs moved away in 1916 perhaps on garrison duty and was killed on the North West<br />

Frontier. Alternatively, Albert may have been ill through disease and left behind in an Indian<br />

hospital where he later died. It is unclear how Albert’s body came to be lost.<br />
