Girls on the Run
Looking for an activity for your daughter in grades 3-
5? Registration for the spring season of Girls on the
Run is coming up on Monday, Dec. 17.
Girls on the Run is a team that inspires pre-teen girls
to be healthy and confident using a fun curriculum
that creatively integrates running. Our goal is to help
girls understand the power of their potential by setting
a goal and working hard to achieve it. We use
exercise, positive reinforcement, and encouraging role models to provide girls with the confidence
they need in those critical pre-teen years. Each practice combines running and walking games with
various life skills, including lessons on healthy eating, body image, setting goals, cooperation and
other age-appropriate topics. Our community team meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 5:15
-6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Church of Christ from February through May. For registration information
see the flyer below or visit www.girlsontheruncincinnati.com. You can also contact Emily Roewer
for more information at eroewer@kingslocal.net.
We are also looking for more coaches to keep up with our growing team. Contact Emily if you are
interested. Girls on the Run Flyer
Name that City
In a Geographical upset Noah Stubenrauch defeated returning
champion Hannah Rasmussen in the 2012 Kings Junior High Geography
Bee.
When Noah returns from break in January, he will take a test from
the National Geographic Society to see if he qualifies for the state
Geography Bee.
Many of the questions students answered were quite challenging.
Students had to be familiar with bodies of water, states, cities, and
much more. In one question moderator Aaron Bunker asked “The
Cara Sea is a large arm of what ocean?” The answer is the Arctic.
Special thanks to Mr. Brent Allen for organizing the bee every year.
Congratulations and good luck Noah!
Hydrologist Visits CIS
SLE Students Publish Poetry Books
When Josie Pong set out to write her poetry book, she didn’t focus on one
topic. Instead she wrote about a lot of different things; the fall, a silly person,
and much more.
This year students in Mrs. Kelly Parker’s class at South Lebanon Elementary
wrote and published poetry books. Students wrote and illustrated seven poems
for their books. Mrs. Parker then worked with www.studentreasures.com
to have the books published.
Justin Berg’s book includes funny poems and crazy poems. He said the project
was hard work but well worth it.
Other third grade classes also wrote books. Some of the younger grades are
making class books, Mrs. Parker said.
Paul Schuster, Hydrologist with the United
States Geological Survey in Colorado, visited
Columbia Intermediate School on Thursday,
Dec. 20.
In Janie Winterhalter’s Science class at CIS students
have been studying geology and how it
relates to the environment.
Mr. Schuster wowed students with pictures and
stories about an expedition he and his team
went on to the Fremont Glacier. He talked to
students about the many exciting aspects of his
job, including living on a glacier for several
months, traveling throughout the United
States, designing and building instruments, and
much more. He also brought along his large rock
collection which includes different kinds of
quartz, igneous rock, and much more.
After their exam students in Francoise More’s 8th
grade Accelerated French I class shared “une bûche de
Noël,” a traditional French Christmas dessert.
A parent kindly made it for the class. The treat was
greatly appreciated by all in Mrs. More’s class.
During the holiday, students in Jan
Thomann’s art class at Kings Junior High
are asked to make a card or some type
of food to celebrate the holidays. Students
can pick any holiday they want.
The students pictured chose Christmas.
Pictured above students made giant
snowflakes. If you look closely you can
Playing the Stock Market
Students in Cynthia Hupp’s class at Columbia Intermediate School got a real-world lesson
on investing this quarter when they played The Stock Market Game.
In the annual Stock Market Game, sponsored by Fidelity Investments and in conjunction
with the University of Cincinnati Center for Economics, students compete to make
the most money buying and trading stocks on the New York Stock Exchange and
Nasdaq. Students are given$100,000 to invest in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.
By the end of the game one of Mrs. Hupp’s teams ranked in the top 20! There were 16
schools that made up 178 teams within the middle school division in Cincinnati. The
team of Timmy Bredemeier, Caroline Mettey, Kevin Maier, and Jenna Pangburn placed
13th. Congratulations everyone!
On Thursday, Dec. 20, South Lebanon Elementary
students spent the afternoon discovering the
wondrous world of a member of the Raptor family…the
Owl!
The hour presentation began with an engaging
reading of Owl Moon by special guest, Mr. David
Tennant, UC professor of integrating science in
the early childhood curriculum and a raptor expert.
Following the reading, SLE welcomed Cindy
Alverson of RAPTOR’s Inc. and some of her very
feathery friends! The students got a close up of
some members of the owl family, learned some
remarkable facts about these birds of prey and
how people like Cindy at RAPTOR’s Inc. have
been providing assistance for the raptors over
the years.
SLE third graders also had the opportunity to dissect an owl pellet and learn more about owls and
other birds of prey. Students learned all about what owls eat, how they catch their food, where they
live and much more. After dissecting the owl pellet, students then learned about other predatory
birds from Raptors, Inc.
Raptors, Inc. rescues injured birds of prey including hawks, owls, eagles, osprey, falcons, and even
vultures. Students were thrilled to see the birds.
