Photograph by Joan Eardley This work has the humour and empathy of her best child paintings; it has a naturalism which flows from the deep affection and a realism not born of slavish accuracy but rather coming from an understanding of the essence of the child; feral, ragged but vitally alive. The free drawing, pentimenti, distortion and non-natural colour take risks, are intuitive but are a wholly successful route to the realisation of the image. Pink Jumper can be seen in Joan Eardley’s studio (see page 37) top right. 55
