A community picnic is a great way to get re-acquainted with neighbors and even welcome 

some new neighbors. It’s a day for you to relax and enjoy good food, live music, and have 

some fun! The Twelve Oaks picnic is designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit and to 

encourage police - community partnerships. 

The Twelve Oaks Civic Association (TOCA) was awarded a County mini-grant that will help to 

fund our Spring Festival and Community Picnic. The Hillsborough County Board of County 

Commissioners and The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County provided the grant. The 

Hillsborough County Office of Neighborhood Relations sponsored the grant. 

In a picnic style atmosphere we will be providing hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, chips, 

desserts, paper goods, sodas, and water. 

You may see some of Hillsborough County’s finest at the picnic as we have invited our County 

Commissioners, our Code Enforcement officer, The Major and Captain for the Sheriff’s 

Department District 3, along with our current and past Community Resource Deputies. In 

addition we hope to have some HCSO specialty units on site for everyone to enjoy. 

Music will be provided by disc jockey, Eric Myers. Eric has provided music for three previous 

picnics and he does an outstanding job. He has a comprehensive music library that includes 

Top 40, Light Rock, 50’s – 80’s, Swing, Disco, Latin, Country, and just about anything else 

you can think of. 

Madison Walling, winner of Town ‘N Country’s Got Talent Contest, has been invited to 

perform. Madison, a 5 th grader at Bay Crest Elementary, is a very talented singer / 

songwriter. Jimbo, The Clown will entertain children and adults with his 45-minute magic 

show. Before and after the show he will be available to make animal balloons and do face 

painting. The Recreation Center staff will assist with setup and entertainment for children, 

which will include two inflatables. A special dog show will be presented by Clarke Inghram, a 

Twelve Oaks homeowner / resident who trains dogs at Inghram’s Sit ‘N Stay Dog Academy, 

his kennel and dog training school. 

Displays (with activities) include Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, the Town ‘N Country 

Hospital, The Youth Council, and the Town ‘N Country Garden Circle. 

The picnic committee is working hard to make this picnic one you are sure to enjoy. So come 

on out and meet your neighbors and their families. We are expecting a good turn out and 

hope to see you there.

Twelve Oaks Special District (TOSD) 2010-11 annual public 

budget hearing will be held Tuesday, April 6 th at the Morgan 

Woods Parks and Recreation building located on the campus of 

Morgan Woods Elementary School. The hearing will begin 

promptly at 6:30 P.M. Homeowners are encouraged to attend. 

Twelve Oaks Community Volunteers will be honored at the May 

25 th TOCA General Membership meeting. Hillsborough County 

Commissioner Mark Sharpe, District 7 (at-large), has been invited 

to be guest speaker. Entertainment will be provided by Trilogy an 

a cappella vocal group featuring Mary Jo Hahn, a Twelve Oaks 

resident. 

A FREE Tiny Tot Program for ages 2 to 5 is now being offered 

at the Morgan Woods Recreation Center located on the north side 

campus of Morgan Woods School (entrance on Soccer Ave.). 

Little ones can attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 

11:30 A.M. Interested? Contact Kim Cannella, Park Director, at

Morgan Woods is recycling printer cartridges, paper, plastic, and 

aluminum cans throughout the year. Community support is 

needed to make this fund-raiser successful. Questions? Contact

Voluntary Pre-K Summer Program: Beginning April 1, Twelve 

Oaks’ parents / legal guardians may register children for the 

2009 Summer VPK program at Bellamy Elementary School, 

9720 Wilsky Blvd. The program is designed to prepare young 

children for kindergarten. Children who turned 4 years old on or 

before September 1, 2009 and who have not participated in the 

VPK program during the school year are eligible to attend the 

summer school program. Proof of age, proof of residence, and 

shot records are required. (Bellamy Elementary phone # 872-

Visit the Town ‘N Country Library: Book discussions, 

computer classes, classes in conversational English for Spanish 

-speaking adults and classes in conversational Spanish for 

English-speaking adults, used book sales, activities for toddlers 

to teens, and more will be offered in April. (NOTE: The library 

will be closed Friday, April 2 nd , a County Furlough Day and 

Easter Sunday, April 4 th .) Fun With Orchids will be the topic of 

discussion at the Master Gardener Program on April 6 th at 6:30 

P.M. Smart Start Your Business, an adult workshop designed 

to provide information on mandatory licenses, legal entities, 

zoning issues, marketing, grant availability, and financing will be 

offered on April 15 th at 10:00 A.M. April 17 th and 24 th adults can 

participate in a four-part adult workshop featuring Nyela Oluchi 

Hope, author of Live, Not Just Exist: Self Coaching Guide and 

Taking My Life Back – The Seven Secrets of Successful Living. 

A book discussion on Fire in the Blood by Irene Nemirovsky will 

take place Wed., April 21 st at 3:00 P.M. Copies of the book are 

available at the library. For information on these and other

Town ’N Country Youth Council will meet Sunday, April 4 th from 

2 - 3:30 P.M. at the Town ‘N Country Regional Library located at 

the corner of Ambassador and Paula Drive. During the month of 

April, teens will volunteer helping the Garden Circle with several 

projects including the Plant Sale on April 18 th . They will 

participate in the Relay For Life on April 9 th and The Great 

American Cleanup on April 17 th. The YC is open to all Town ‘N 

Country teens ages 12-17 who are attending school. Teens 

interested in joining the Youth Council and having an opportunity 

to earn community service hours can obtain a membership

Town ‘N Country Garden Circle will meet Wednesday, 

April 7 th , at noon, at the Town ‘N Country Recreation Center on 

Hanley Road (next to Webb Middle School). Following lunch, 

guest speaker and Master Gardener, Lynn Barber, will discuss 

The Lazy Gardener. Twelve Oaks gardeners, from brown thumbs 

to green thumbs, are welcome to attend. 

The Garden Circle will host Gardening Expo Sunday, April 18 th 

from 11 AM – 3 PM at the Town ‘N Country Recreation Center, 

6039 Hanley Road (next to Webb Middle School). 16 gardening 

experts will be available to answer questions and give gardening 

tips. In addition, the 7 th annual plant sale and garden tool 

sharpening will be available. This event is co-sponsored by 

Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation, and Conservation. For

The Town 'N Country Senior Center is open from 8 A.M. to 

4 P.M. Monday through Friday. (NOTE: The Center will be closed 

Friday, April 2 nd , a County Furlough Day.) Located on the first 

floor of the Town ‘N Country Commons Library, the center is part 

of Hillsborough County’s Department of Aging Services. Line 

dancing, Zumba, Tai Chi, YOGA, free weights, exercise classes, 

and more are offered. Seniors enjoy scrap booking, competing in 

Wii games, Dominoes, and Ping Pong, as well as playing bridge, 

mahjongg, bunco, pinochle, canasta and bingo. Every Friday at 

1:30 there is a feature movie presentation with snacks. Lunch is 

served daily to all those who register in advance. A special Easter 

Luncheon along with a guest speaker and entertainment is 

scheduled for April 7 th at 11:30 and a Hawaiian Luau 

Extravaganza is planned for April 23 rd at 12:30. Topics that will be 

discussed by guest speakers scheduled in April include Quality 

Health Plans Program Services and Affordable Housing

Free Tax Return Preparation sites are open throughout 

Hillsborough County until April 15 th to low and moderate wage 

earners. Puzzled by the tax law or which credits and deductions 

to take? Need assistance with your tax return? The IRS 

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program or the Tax 

Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Program offer free tax help if you 

qualify. A professional staff, along with well-trained volunteers, is 

available to assist with basic Form 1040 tax returns, including 

Schedule A for itemized deductions and claims for the Earned 

Child Tax Credit, Disability Credit, and Elderly Credit. They will 

prepare and electronically file your federal income tax returns, all

AARP Tax-Aide will provide free tax preparation assistance to 

taxpayers with low and middle incomes through April 15. Special 

attention is given to people age 60 and older, but you do not need

News In Brief Continued... 

The 2010 Relay For Life of Town N Country will begin its 

search for a cure Friday April 9 th starting at 6:00 P.M. at 

Incarnation Church Grounds. The Relay needs your help with 

its search. Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration 

where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and 

take turns walking around a track relay style to raise funds to 

fight cancer. At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of 

Luminaria around the track in a moving ceremony to honor 

cancer survivors as well as friends and family members lost to

Days: You can join your friends and neighbors in 

this very important and satisfying task, which is 

the cornerstone of our democratic government.

have the ability to competently read and write 

English; and attend training classes. All poll workers are

Residents, who hear the constant boom / 

thump, are urged to call the Sheriff’s non-emergency number 

(#247-8200) and register a complaint. NOTE: You MUST give 

your name when registering a complaint. That gives the 

Sheriff’s Dept. the authority to approach and contact the 

offender and to take the appropriate action. If you call and 

remain "anonymous", only an alert will be sent, and no deputy 

will go by. The next day, take the time to call Joan Hallgren at 

Hillsborough County EPC at 627-2600 Ext 1331 or e-mail her at 

hallgrenj@epchc.org and report the time that you heard the 

noise. TOSD is still working with the EPC and the Sheriff’s 

Dept. to get this annoyance stopped.

CLEANUP 

April 17, 2010 

Every spring, volunteers 

put on their work gloves and old sneakers 

for the Great American Cleanup of Florida. 

Sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, the 

Great American Cleanup inspires people to 

take pride in their communities by 

encouraging volunteerism, personal action, 

and responsibility. The 2010 annual cleanup 

will take place Saturday, April 17 th from 9:00 

A.M. until noon and is part of a national 

effort that brings together community 

groups, associations and businesses in 

Hillsborough County to clean communities, 

local parks, roadways, and shorelines. The 

objective is to raise public awareness about 

litter in our communities. 

Twelve Oaks has participated in this event 

for several years. Last year several 

residents including teens and children from 

our community volunteered for this annual 

event. (NOTE: Teens can earn community 

service hours by participating in this event.) 

This special day gives residents the 

opportunity to show pride in their 

neighborhood by volunteering to help clean 

up and beautify Twelve Oaks. Twelve Oaks 

volunteers will be asked to “police” the 

islands throughout the community and to 

pick up trash and debris along the outside 

wall on Hanley Road and Waters Avenue. 

Volunteers can also clean up around their 

own yard or street. By participating and 

working together, volunteers will make 

Twelve Oaks a cleaner more beautiful place 

to live.

that they would be interested in this project.

application forms available for volunteers.

Terry Raulerson, a Twelve Oaks volunteer, 

is site captain for the Town ’N Country area 

located at Shimberg Park. Volunteers from 

throughout Town ‘N Country including those 

from Twelve Oaks will meet at Shimberg 

Park at 8:30 A.M. to pick up supplies and 

receive a special tee-shirt identifying the 

event. Forms for teens needing community 

service hours for school will also be 

available. Let's all do our part during 

Earth Month (April) and join the Great 

American Cleanup.

We still need someone to step forward to fill the position of General Coordinator for 

Neighborhood Watch. We have Coordinators for each Area but we need someone who is 

willing to organize updating the telephone chains and to plan a community meeting once a 

year. You can make this job as much or as little as you want it to be. NWatch volunteers 

work as a team with a goal to keep our community safe and secure. Interested? Want to

Be a Good Neighbor — Keep an eye on your neighbor’s homes and have them do the 

same for you. If you see something suspicious - movement inside when a home that should 

be empty, a strange car or truck in the driveway, a loiterer, call Hillsborough County Sheriff’s 

Department non-emergency (813-247- 8200) immediately. Make a reasonable effort to get a 

good description and license number, without endangering yourself. Burglars have been 

known to use a truck and openly carry off valuable possessions. If neighbors haven’t 

mentioned moving, be suspicious. Police would rather you called than wished you’d called.

TWELVE OAKS WATCH PATROL — If you would like to help keep Twelve Oaks 

a safe and secure community please consider volunteering to help with the Neighborhood 

Watch Patrol. It takes approximately 1½ hour to do a complete patrol of all streets. This is 

probably one of the best ways to become familiar with your neighborhood. You do not have 

to complete a full patrol every time, nor is it necessary to patrol everyday or even every 

month, just whenever you can spare the time. Remember, THIS IS YOUR 

COMMUNITY! Your help is needed and will be appreciated. If you would like to help please
