Dear BT,
I was driving down Galston
Rd (near Bushlands Ave)
at Hornsby Hts on Easter
Monday, when I noticed a
‘Banana in Pyjamas’ lying by
the side of the road. I knew
that it couldn’t have been
chasing teddy bears (as that
only happens on Tuesdays)!

escaped out of the window of
a car, possibly returning from
the circus at Rofe Park.
In all seriousness, I have two young children and
if they lost one of their sentimental toys I know
how hard that would be.
If you know who owns this Banana in Pyjamas,
please contact The Bush Tele Shop, business
an interesting analogy with regard to issue of motor
vehicle licences and driving behaviour in general.
He acknowledges that there is a degree of
irresponsible behaviour across most of our society,
but neglects to mention that there are 400 (+/-)
deaths on NSW roads each year.
I am certain that he doesn’t intend to trivialise
those tragedies but it begs the question; why are
we picking on hunters? Most sports/pastimes/
pursuits carry some risk, but to penalise the many
because of the sins of the few seems to be the
sole preserve of shooting sports which are being
brought into disrepute by criminals.
ANZAC DAY
The Man Behind The Man
Behind The Gun
Continued from page 4
On 13 th December 1915, a week before the last Aussies left Gallipoli, Burton applied to enlist in the A.I.F at Victoria

to do his part, Burton found another way to serve and left Australia on 8 th January 1916 aboard the S.S ‘Arcadia’ to

By early 1915 the line of trenches running from the Belgian Coast to the Swiss Border were well established and the
opposing armies were making minimal progress. It became apparent to those in charge, both militarily and politically,
that millions of men would be needed to win the war along with vast quantities of artillery and ammunition. The

man the factories was ever decreasing.
Vickers Maxim were fast out of the blocks looking for a solution to this problem and by July 1915 they had placed
announcements within the Sydney broadsheets looking for ‘1,000 trained mechanics’ to leave Australia and work in
the factories for the duration of the war. The Australian government also took an interest in the matter, although initially
they were looking at establishing an arsenal producing guns in this country. Once it was realised that this would not be
possible due to the current demands on the British armaments industry it was decided that it would be better to send
our skilled men over there for further experience which could later be used to establish an arsenal.
Towards the end of 1916 the Government appointed a Professor of Mechanical Engineering from Sydney University,
Colonel Sir Henry Barraclough, to establish and oversee a scheme to assist Australian munitions workers who
went to work in England. By wars end over 3,000 Australians were employed as munitions workers in England. Each

Barraclough’s department should they become ill or lose their employment
Although Burton arrived at Vickers Maxim in February 1916 he did later register as an Australian Munitions worker
in May 1917, being recorded as munitions worker number 1110. His records state that he was “turning” on 9.2

thousands. Burton would continue this work throughout the duration of the war.
The scheme also bore the costs for transporting the Australians home post war. Burton left England aboard the S.S
‘Bahia Castillo’ on the14 th July 1919. Burton did not travel back to Australia alone as he had married a woman six years
his junior whilst working in England, and the new Mrs Marguerite Anne Blake would soon be at home in Berowra.
Upon his return Burton established himself as a successful breeder of white leghorns. White Leghorns had been breed
successfully by the Hillcrest Farm and Burton likely followed their lead. A search through the Sydney newspapers
between the early 1920’s and mid 1930’s reveals that Burton was a regular entrant in the annual egg laying
competition held at the Hawkesbury Agricultural College.
Burton’s swansong year would appear to be 1935.
The Sydney Morning Herald of 25 th March 1935 reported that the egg laying
competition which had commenced on the 1 st April 1934 came to an end
on Saturday 23 rd March 1935, a run of 357 days. During this period one of
Burton’s white leghorn hens had laid 288 eggs and became the leader in the
individual score of the light breed’s section.
After 1935 the poultry industry within Berowra seems to have moved into

opportunity to ask Bill Foster about the Berowra men who served during the
Great War. Bill remembered Burton and said he was known locally as ‘Major’
Blake, although he could not recall from where the nickname originated.
Burton’s life changed on 13 th May 1951 when his wife Marguerite died at
Hornsby Hospital. By this time he was aged 71 years and he returned to
England soon after. Burton passed away on the 28 th March 1963 aged 83
years in a Norfolk hospital.
Burton was living in Berowra when the War Memorial was established in May
1932 and would have seen his name listed upon it. He had previously been
named on the Honour Roll that had been established during Christmas 1916
on the railway station platform. Although he never bore arms his service to the
Empire during the First World War was acknowledged by the community and
should not be forgotten.
These two little 10 month old pups were rescued from being drowned in
Emergency Evacuation
Plans for Apartment
Owners
For the first time ever, apartment owners are being asked whether their
building has an evacuation plan and would they know what to do in an
emergency?
Having an emergency evacuation plan in residential strata is not compulsory but
BCS Strata Management is encouraging owners corporations to voluntarily draft
a plan and practice evacuations with residents.
BCS’s Chief Operating Officer, Jason Starr-Thomas said the recent bushfires
and floods in New South Wales provided a timely reminder for everyone living
in apartments to ensure their building has an emergency evacuation plan in
place.
“We want owner/occupiers and tenants to take the time to get to know the
safest way to evacuate their building in case of an emergency,” Mr Starr-Thomas
said.
“While it’s not compulsory in residential strata, there is no reason why the
owners’ corporation could not create its own plan and undertake drill exercises
with residents.
“Residents should know how to access the fire escape, where to assemble so
they are not in the way of emergency services and how they would account for
their neighbours.”
Fire and Rescue NSW has a service that can assist produce plans for business
and industry and it may be worth asking if they would also work with a strata
scheme.
“Don’t forget there may be elderly people or families with small children who
may need extra assistance in an emergency. So get to know your neighbours
and make sure they are able to evacuate their homes safely,”
Mr Starr-Thomas advised.
WAITARA ANGLICAN
reopens their doors!
The doors are bigger and the chairs are softer, and the gardens are
greener, but the people are still as friendly as ever at Waitara Anglican!
After 15 months of renovation and building work, Waitara Anglican was
officially opened on Sunday February 17 by the Archbishop of Sydney, Dr Peter
Jensen. Joined by MPs Paul Fletcher and Matt Kean, Cllr Nick Berman, local
school principal Julie Webber plus hundreds more, the ribbon was cut and a
plaque unveiled to commemorate the occasion.
Their minister, Rev. Bruce Stanley, was excited. “It was a great day for our
church as we open these new facilities,” he said. “The buildings are an
important part of how we serve the community of Waitara and it was wonderful
to see so many joining us to celebrate.”
The Church has been meeting at Waitara Public School for the past 15
months, thanks to the generous hospitality of the school. “We have a stronger
relationship with Waitara Public School now because of this time together. We
are very grateful for their hospitality,” said Mr Stanley.
The new facilities include a new foyer, offices, new toilets, kitchen and meeting
rooms, as well as a facelift on the inside and outside of the older buildings.
Waitara Anglican opened 63 years ago, and their last renovations were in
1982, with the addition of a new Rectory and Hall.
Sunday services are at 8:30am, 10am, 5pm and 6:45pm.
GO … The Mighty Berowra
Wallabies!
The weekend of 6th and 7th April saw the
return of The Mighty Berowra Wallabies
for the 2013 season.
On Saturday morning 6th April, the Gala Day was held at Dural Oval. Teams
from Under 6 to Under 11 had their first hit out and performed incredibly well.
Meanwhile Back at Home, Warrina Street Oval, our under 13 took on their old
Foe Pennant Hills in what was described as ‘one of the best games of football
for many years’ according to former Coach Karl Baxter who reports...
Grand final replay from 2012 season
U13s are 2 Time defending premiers and had an undefeated
season last year.
There are plenty of changes to both sides from last year’s grand final and to
make the win even more satisfying for Berowra is the fact that this year’s team
now includes 7 players from the U12s who are playing up this year in the 13s.
The game started fairly even but Pennant Hills struck first with the opening 2
tries to lead the game 8-0, Berowra fought back to be down at half-time 12-
10 and the game was evenly contested. The momentum of the game changed
with the Korean superstar twins Jun and Woo Choi stepping up this year with
plenty of penetrating and straight running whilst strong running and defence
from Marcus Shepherd, Will Garrett and Rhys Covey helping the Berowra
Wallabies stay close but still behind in the game 22-18 with only 1 minute left.
The team was guided about 80 metres down field by half back Ryan Doyland
and a quick play the ball from Taine Griffiths in the far left corner only metres
out saw the ball spread from one side of the field to the other when Rhys
Covey pushed through 3 defenders to literally score the try simultaneously
as the siren sounded to even the scores at 22-22. This left half back Ryan
Doyland with the pressure of kicking the winner from 10 metres in from touch
and 20 metres out.
A hush grew of the crowd and the team huddled back on the 40 metre line....
the crowd behind the kicker all throwing their support behind him...the ball left
the boot beautifully and hooked from right to left just sneaking inside the top of
the right hand upright to secure a 24-22 victory.
The crowd went wild and the boys celebrated by lifting Ryan onto their
shoulders. Great win and a great game to watch full of exciting plays!
The three peat title defence has begun.
On Sunday at Warrina Street Oval our 19’s played and won with a
convincing 28 to 0 routing. And in an exciting sunny Sunday afternoon
Berowra A Grade were victors over Penno. in a close one. 36-28
A great weekend of Rugby League with a
great Rugby League Club!
HEALTH AND BEAUTY
HEEL PAIN
PRICELESS
PEARLS
By Ralph Estherby
Who would you choose to play the
leading role in a movie that was being
made about your life? Would it be
Bruce Willis or Hugh Grant? Would it
be Angelina Jolie or Helen Mirren?
What genre would it be? Zac Efron
in ‘High School Musical’ or Angela
Lansbury in ‘Murder She Wrote’?
Who would choose to direct your
movie, would it be a Jerry Bruckheimer
‘Science Fiction Classic’ or a Ron
Howard ‘Action Drama’? How about a
Nancy Meyers ‘Rom Com’ or a Kevin
Costner ‘Apocalyptic Saga’ or maybe
a Ridley Scott ‘Epic’ or a Quentin
Tarantino ‘Realistic Violence Not
Required’ film.
I wonder how Russell Crowe would
approach my normal day or how
Hugh Jackman would choose to depict
the scenes in my life – would he be
‘Wolverine’ or would he sing and
dance his all the way through to lunch
time?
What would Meryl Streep do if she was
you or Emma Stone? Is your life a
comedy or a tragedy at the moment?
Sometimes it would be nice to have
someone come in and take control
of our life and make choices and
orchestrate outcomes that were out of
the ordinary but I am not sure that I
want to relinquish total control to just
anyone…after all some movies do
well and others tank completely! Also I
don’t think that my kids would respond
well to a father that was like ‘Mr Bean’
or Clint Eastwood in one of his more
menacing roles.
I know that sometimes I don’t have all
the answers and it would be nice to
have a ‘Director’ who would give me
some tips on where to stand and what
to say next but neither do I want to be
just an actor playing a role that does
not reflect who I really am. What I
need is a balance and I am happy to
have found this in my relationship with
the Lord.
The Bible says that “A man’s heart
plans his way, But the LORD directs his
steps.” Prov 16:9
So this is the best of both worlds, I am
responsible for the decisions I take but
the Lord has a part to play because I
welcome it and allow His beneficial
influence. Maybe this is just what you
need – a little more direction – ask
Him – I know He is available to help!
question?
says Mrs Chard
PODIATRIST.
There are several causes of heel
pain, the most common being
PLANTAR FASCIITIS
Plantar Fasciitis is simply inflammation
of the big strong band on the bottom
of the foot (the plantar fascia).
Symptoms usually begin as a ‘stone
bruise’ type of pain, increasing to
chronic pain, especially first thing in
This kind of pain is easily treated by
Animal law pioneer
challenges Australian
status quo in national
tour
In Australia, animals are still legally regarded as property yet
in countries including Switzerland, Germany and Austria their
legal status has been reformed to elevate animals beyond
mere possessions. In these countries, the change in the legal
status of animals has led to significant progress concerning
animal’s interests.
To discuss this and other approaches of animal law, Voiceless is
proud to introduce internationally-renowned Swiss legal expert,
Antoine F. Goetschel, as keynote speaker in the 2013 Voiceless
Animal Law Lecture Series, ‘The Animal Voice: Securing Interests
Through Law.’
Goetschel was formerly the animal welfare lawyer for the Canton of
Zurich, charged with representing the interests of animals in criminal
cases as a public official, the first position of its kind in the world.
“Animal welfare must be valued in the same way we value the
fundamental rights of property, freedom of commerce, of teaching
and of religion,” said Goetschel.
Goetschel became interested in animal welfare and ethics at the age
of 24, when an accident left him voiceless for 10 days, helping him
to understand the plight of animals who can’t express themselves to
humans.
Throughout the 12 stop tour of Australia, Goetschel will present
the need for a unified, strong and applicable animal protection
legislation to be created in every state. These free events are open to
lawyers, university students and the general public and will run from
23 April to 13 May.
To register for the 2013 Voiceless Law Lecture Series go to
http://www.voiceless.org.au/lecture
The efforts of Voiceless are assisted by patrons including The Hon
Michael Kirby AC CMG, former judge of the High Court of Australia,
Professor J. M. Coetzee, Nobel Prize for Literature Winner 2003, Dr
Jane Goodall, world-renowned primatologist and animal advocate,
and Brian Sherman AM, businessman and philanthropist; a Council
of 41 members including immediate past Treasury Secretary Dr Ken
Henry AC, neurosurgeon, Dr Charlie Teo AM, former President of the
Australian Law Reform Commission, Prof David Weisbrot AM, and Dr
Melissa Perry QC.
Annual “Dads’ Demo”
at Grevillea Preschool
KU Grevillea Preschool at Hornsby Heights held its Annual
Dad’s Demo on Friday 5th April from 5pm -6.30pm.
This evening of play, supper and Dads connecting with other Dads
and male carers of the attending preschoolers is an event circled on
the family calendar from the beginning of Term 1. The aims to give
Dad or carers time to stay at preschool exploring the play based
environment at their leisure with their child.
KU Grevillea Preschool Director Jane Moran said, “Often the Dads
do not drop off and pick-up their child at preschool so this gives
them the opportunity to see the Early Childhood Program in practice
sometimes meeting educators for the first time.”
