takes on the Simpson Desert!
Berowra resident and former Bush
Tele delivery boy, Graeme Gates, has
set himself a goal to raise funds for
beyondblue.
Calling his fundraiser WALKING 4
TALKING, Graeme will walk east-west
across the Simpson Desert starting
from the little outback town of Birdsville
distance of 430km and crossing 1,200
sand dunes.
“I plan to walk 40km per day with two
rest days,” said Graeme.
“My plan has been to carry out
a program of walking daily and
formulating a specialised diet with the
assistance of sports nutritionists,” said
Graeme. He estimates that he will
require around 18,000kj /day. Basically
a day plus snacks!
“I just hope I have time to walk,” jokes
Graeme.
“I am currently training a distance
of 20-25km walking per day in
preparation and will peak at 40/km for
four days,” said Graeme.

this is a food service for frail, aged
and people with disabilities and their
carers. The service also offers private
catering. Many volunteers enjoy
being part of the delivery team. This
is a trusted service which takes into
consideration the individual’s needs,
coping capacity and support network.

POLICE NEWS
About 10am Monday 10 th June
in Arcadia road, Arcadia (near
Vision Valley Road), a Diahatsu
appears to have failed to negotiate
a right hand bend, careered off
the road into a garden bed then
into a tree. There was extensive damage to the front of the car. The driver
appears to have removed the number plates and left the scene. Later that
night a neighbour reported the car ‘in the bush’ to police. Inquiries led police
to a nearby property where the said number plates were allegedly found. The
owner or driver has not yet been spoken to and inquiries are continuing.
Car crash on the Gorge
About 7.30am Friday 7 th June a Corolla, driven towards Hornsby on Galston
Gorge by a 17 year old male P1, has failed to negotiate a left hand bend and
collided with a rock wall near Tunks Bridge. The driver was not hurt. He was
issued a ticket for negligent driving.
Stealing from a department store
About 2.45pm Monday 10 th
old male is alleged to have removed a security tag from a jumper. The male
has then continued browsing in the shop before returning to the same jumper
where it is alleged he picked it up and left the store without paying for it. It was
valued at $105. The male was stopped and police were called. He received
an infringement notice for the incident. He was also banned from DJ’s for 5

I would like to express my absolute delight and
thanks to The 1 st Hornsby Heights Scouts.
In response to a story in The Bush Tele Weekly
on 16 th May, I called Alan and he arranged for a
gang of very helpful and willing boys and girls,
headed up by Nicole, to attend my home and
clean up the gardens for me.
They took over and worked hard and quietly
for three hours and transformed my weeds into
garden beds. I was amazed how much they did
in such a short time. I can’t thank them enough.
This was on the Sunday of the long weekend.

In recognition of Di Stoddart and Wideview’s
Cafe4Kids canteen
I am writing in to praise the outstanding work
of Di Stoddart and the team at Cafe4Kids, the
Wideview School Canteen.
volunteers, the Wideview canteen is a godsend
to both the students and parents at Wideview
Primary School.
There are two things that make Cafe4Kids
wonderful.
First, the food. There is an extensive menu that
are home-made and healthy, including soups,
salads, wraps and spaghetti bolognaise, to
name only a few (the smell of garlic cooking on
Wednesday mornings is fantastic!). There are
also treats, which included homemade mango
ice-cream last term and hot chocolate with warm
The second feature is the kindness. Cafe4Kids
is a warm and friendly hub where both kids and
parents feel welcome. The café has a wonderful
spirit of generosity, and the surprisingly low
inclusion and giving. Small wonder my kids
love Cafe4Kids and see a canteen lunch as a
real treat.

Epping Club at 3pm on Sunday,

of English folk songs to great military
marches, those looking for the iconic
concert or military band sound will
not be disappointed,” said Conductor
Stephen O’Doherty.
“Plus, we couldn’t resist a quick
romp through some of Andrew Lloyd
Webber’s best!” he said.
The concert will also feature the GK’s
new brass ensemble, with specially
arranged pieces to demonstrate their
great versatility.

OUR “BONNIE” GIRL

This story may hopefully help someone who has a
similar problem with their toddler.
Up to the age of 2 years, Bonnie had never crawled or
showed any signs of standing or walking. She got around on
her bottom with legs crossed in front of her. Doctors had told
us not to worry; “she will walk when she’s ready,” they said.
At 18 months, physiotherapy was recommended, but didn’t
work – she needed more. X-rays were then taken of her
hips, which showed nothing amiss, but low muscle tone was
noted. To tick all the boxes, she was seen by a neurologist,
who diagnosed “ligamentous laxity” or hypermobility, which
means that ligaments and tendons are looser than average
(low muscle tone).
Not knowing where to turn to next, I started to pray that God
would send us someone who could help Bonnie to become
mobile. About 3 weeks later I was at a park in Glenorie with
Bonnie where I met a mum with two kids, who told me about
a lady who comes to her home to help her little boy who had
walking difficulties, and she had helped him tremendously.
She gave me Gabi’s name and number. I told this mum that
she was an answer to my prayer and she said, “I have never
been to this park before, but I decided to come today”.
After 4 months of therapy with Gabriella Tomay, which is
called “Conductive Education”, Bonnie is up and walking;
she also learnt to crawl.

GENEROSITY
A major milestone was marked
at Hornsby Shire’s Epping Library
this week when the knitting
group celebrated five years
together, not to mention the
more than 700 blankets they’ve
knitted for charity.
“We like creating something and there are
so many needy people in the world,” says
Gundel Briggs, who has been part of the
group since its inception.
“We didn’t imagine it would get to this stage.
I’m quite addicted to it, I look forward to
coming here each week.”
The completed blankets are donated to
Wrap With Love, which sends them around
the world to people in need in countries that
range from Argentina to Zimbabwe.
The most recent shipment went to those who
lost their homes in this year’s earthquake in
the Solomon Islands.
Knowing people all over the world are
wrapped in blankets knitted in the library
gives all involved a special feeling.
There are similar knitting groups at libraries
throughout Hornsby Shire. To become
involved in any of them phone Sue Harrison
on 9847 6804.
Meanwhile, the grand finale of each year’s
knitting effort, the Knit-In at Hornsby Library,
will take place on August 2.

I don’t pay a lot of attention to
reviews, I don’t like to know too
much about the movie I am about
to see – the reason I don’t listen to
reviews is that the reviewers seem
to get it wrong a lot of the time –
but not always.
I went to the movies last night with
my family and we watched a film that
I expected to be pretty good. The
reviewers had said things like…It was
a dull, ploddingly paced exercise in
sentimental sci-fi…It was filled with an
eerie dreamy stillness…it was the worst
movie I have ever seen… unfortunately,
this time, they were pretty right.
The truth is that we all have different
tastes in movies and what suits one
person will often not suit someone else.
We are surprised when someone raves
about a movie that we found boring or
too far-fetched and yet we are shocked
when they express disdain regarding a
film that we would happily define as “a
classic”.
When we hear a negative review it
tends to colour our thinking, we are less
likely to be interested in a movie that
has been eviscerated in print. Many
would not invest the time or money
in seeing something that others have
condemned or ‘written off’ as a flop.
The problem here is that the critic is not
always right – yesterday they were – but
tomorrow they may not be.
If I listen to critics all my life I will miss
out on those unique or tailor-made
films that suit me down to the ground.
I will allow someone else’s bad
experience to rob me of my own.
Many people have allowed other
people’s ‘reviews’ to colour their
thinking regarding Christianity and their
personal search for God. Because
someone else has reported a failure
of an individual or a Church they have
allowed that review to ‘close the door’
on their own personal experience and I
believe that they are missing out. Just
like your taste in movies is an individual
thing so too should your experience
of God be. So don’t be content with
someone else’s review, don’t miss out
on what so many have found to be
beneficial, adding joy to their lives. The
Bible encourages us…
“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is
good!” Psalms 34:8

courts under a lease arrangement with Council.
“Aesthetically it’s a lot more pleasing, while it’s also solved a
safety issue because people could injure themselves before
this work was done,” club president Geoff Childs said.
“Hopefully this will help us generate more members, court
hirers and people for the coaching classes.”
Council’s share of the money came from the rent that is paid
each year by the various tennis clubs throughout the Shire.
“This is a great program, firstly because it comes at no cost to
ratepayers,” Hornsby Mayor Steve Russell said.
Others to benefit this year included Eastwood Thornleigh
District Tennis Association, which received new court
fencing and synthetic grass resurfacing; Hills District Tennis
Association, which is receiving court fencing works; and North
Epping Rangers, which is having some court surface repair
carried out.
Beecroft Lawn Tennis Club is one of the few in Sydney that still
has genuine grass courts.
“We’re always very keen to have new members. Come along
