AT LAST!Kerbing and guttering forBerowra Waters RoadThe very busy main road through Berowra, which is the onlyaccess for thousands of residents, is to be kerbed and gutteredafter many years of being previously overlooked for funding.Hornsby Shire Council surveyors are currently conducting a preliminarysurvey of Berowra Waters Road between Crowley Road (Paul JonesRoundabout) and Alan Rd (Crossroads Roundabout).A Ward Councillor Nathan Tilbury said, “Data and information collectedby the surveyors will be used to prepare detailed design plans for theproposed improvement works. These improvement works will includethe construction of kerb & gutter, pavement, sealing of the road shoulderand drainage upgrade.”It will be necessary to stage these works over a number of years subjectto availability of funds. Stage 1 of Berowra Waters Road is included inthe 2013/2014 Local Road Improvements Program.for stage 1.Photo: Cllr Nathan Tilbury at the Berowra Crossroads roundabout. Hesaid, “It is a disgrace that it is the oldest road in the Berowra district andit’s still not kerbed and guttered. It is the main thoroughfare to the villageshops but is not much better than it was 100 years ago. It is a great reliefand guttered.”KILL YOUR SPEED…NOT our Wildlife!Continued from front cover“It’s really important for drivers toreduce their speed, not only for theirown safety, but also to help ensurethe survival of our native species,” DrJohnson said.Road accident statistics show thataccidents are caused by ‘animalstrike’, with the number of unreportedaccidents likely to be much higher.According to a study conducted byThe University of New South Wales, kangaroos and wallabies are the mostlikely species involved in animalrelatedroad accidents, followed bystraying stock, dogs and horses. The study also found that crasheswere more likely to happen atweekends between dusk and dawn, with the peak period being 6pm–7pm.Three easy things you can doto help prevent wildlife injuriesoccurring:• Don’t litter – this attracts wildlife tothe roadside to scavenge.• Slow down at night – most animalstrikes occur when nocturnal animalsare active.• Take note of road signs – these willoften highlight areas where wildlifecollisions have happened in the past.FRONT COVER PHOTO: Craigof Thornleigh and Rhiannon ofBerowra with a young monitor lizardwhich they saw a motorist run overand leave for dead in The GullyRoad, Berowra. Rhiannon, whocalled Sydney Metropolitan WildlifeService in an effort to save the reptile, said, “The motorist didn’t stop. Theyjust kept going.” This 200m sectionof The Gully Road has long been adanger zone not only for wildlife, buthuman life as well, as depicted by theplethora of wildlife safety signs, ‘slowdown for children playing’ signs andthe installation of a pedestrian refuge.Rhiannon said, “One resident was soconcerned at the amount of road killthat she put up her own sign in TheGully Road telling motorists to slowdown. A lot of water dragons, monitorsand goannas bask on the warmasphalt on the road so motorists haveto be aware. People just don’t want tostop and don’t care. I am fed up withpicking up the dead and injured wildlifeleft on the road by uncaring motorists. Why do they live in Berowra if theydon’t care about our wildlife!”The Roads and Maritime ServicesDriver Handbooks states: If an animalhas been killed, remove it from theroad if it is safe to do so. Be carefulwith native animals as they may havebabies in their pouches. If a native animal has been hurt youshould contact WIRES (or SydneyMetropolitan Wildlife Service). HSC however kept their cool and controlled possession before our James Martin slotted a well-constructed equaliser at about the 20 minute mark.to step up and they did in particular our Group Manager Planning James Farrington who as a back used his superior height to foil many attacking raid fromRicardo Martello was also a handful as he time after time provided clean ball for his team mates to push forward and createscoring opportunities.Scott PhillipsSteve Wosik then slotted a third goal togo into the half time break now with a handy 3-1 lead. There was plenty of half time friendly banter between the good number of supporters and Councillors that had turned up for the match from both Councilsincluding both Mayors (HSC Steve Russell and KMC Elaine Malicki).against the run of play to score two quick goals. BUSH TELE LETTERSDear BT,Name Withheld (TBTW 21/3/13) attempted in hisreply to Bronwyn Dobeson, (my wife), to “clarify afew misconceptions” but unfortunately did little butreinforce much of the misinformation pushed by theShooters and Fishers Party. He should also look upNearly all shooters do follow the rules and do try todo the right thing in terms of safety. Unfortunately itonly needs an irresponsible few to create the tragicscenario that is inevitable if we allow hunting inNational Parks. To become a driver you must have eyesightchecks, be a supervised Learner for 100+ hoursand pass tests, just to get your P licence. How oftenand drink drive? And these people “agreed” to acode of conduct and might lose their licence, butdoes that stop them? Unfortunately when you givesome people a “weapon”, such as a car or a gun, they are inherently dangerous and will eventuallybe a threat to those around them.shotgun cartridge from a student in my classroomwho had taken it from his father’s “secure” storage.Rules will always be broken.Name Withheld is correct that hunting will beallowed in only about 10% of parks, but theseare the largest parks and so the actual area ismuch larger than 10%. World Heritage areaswill be exempt but two of our most visited parks,Kosciuszko and Warrumbungle will be open forhunting adjacent to the World Heritage parks.Shooting does already occur in Victoria and NewZealand; of animals and people. In NZ on averageone HUNTER is killed every year, usually by hismates in the same shooting party, but innocentcampers also die. In 2010 a school teacher waskilled while cleaning her teeth when she wasmistaken for a deer, while camping. The hunteronly served 11 months for manslaughter. PoliceInspector Joe Green who studied most of the caseshas suggested that “buck fever” which he describesas, “the psychological state whereby the hunter’sdesire to shoot their quarry is so strong that itoverrides all rational thinking”. Even the president ofthe NZ Deerstalkers Association, Trevor Dyke said,In 2009 truck driver Bob Knight was killed by a strayhandgun bullet when he was sitting in his truck 200much greater range. No matter how many safeguards are put in place ifwe have amateur hunters in National Parks therewill always be risk to the public. How will I be ableto protect my wife from the “slings and arrows” if Idon’t know the trajectory and muzzle velocity?Dave Dobeson, Berowra HeightsDear BT,I want to offer my sincere thanks to the kind andattentive Samaritans who helped my husband afterhe fell outside Coles Asquith around 5:30pm onThursday 14th March. We wish to acknowledge the thoughtfulness of thelady who called both an ambulance and myselfand then waited with my husband, even providingan impromptu pillow to raise his head from theconcrete. BUSH TELE LETTERSDear BT,Not wishing to annoy people byinsinuating hunters are merelyscapegoats for the ills of the world, trained’ people (TBTW Letters –Name supplied): some years agoI travelled to a marshland areahunting protesters, to the onlypublic accessible road we wereallowed on to watch and recordthe hunting.Every car, truck and 4WD there hadVictorian numberplates becauseVictoria had a test hunters had toundergo: how to identify a duck andnot shoot other species like swans, egrets etc. These hunters hadobviously failed the test becausethey jumped over the border toshoot in NSW where no such testwas required.I saw swans, and other beautifulnon duck-like birds, downed over2 days. By Day 2 there was notso the hunters, despite the strictrule that said no shooting belowfeet because they had to shootsomething, by gummoment came when a child, about12 maybe, aimed his shotgunat me 6 feet away and shoutedBANG and then laughed with theadults with him. Side splittingstuff. We are kidding ourselves if wethink they will shoot only ferals.shoot anything if their legal targetsare not cooperating. I am surethere are responsible ones whointend doing a public service butremember these are people wholike to kill things for fun, not civicmindedness. And bow-hunting? Why is suchan inaccurate method evenbeing allowed? If they were trulyserious in helping then the mosteffective, and humane, method:of choice.Slippery-slope people: First …limited parks and limited hunternumbers and then a little bit moreeach year. This is a foothold situation and westill continually see reports of illegalhunting of native animals.Amanda, HornsbyDear BT,Scrapping the Berowra Pool andusing the money for other purposesAt the Hornsby Shire Council (HSC)cancelled the Berowra Pool anddecided to use the money forother projects.Minute’ where items do not needbecause they are of a proceduralor administrable nature. It’s notmeant for items of public interestalthough I believe payment of$25 million for the Quarryacquisition was also brought upwithout public debate due to theuse of a Mayoral Minute. At the end of the council meetingBerowra and District CommunityAssociation President JohnFarquhar and I (who were therefor other Agenda Items) got upand spoke of the various reportsneed for the Berowra Pool andasked why this item was not onthe agenda as it was of publicinterest. We also discussed fairdistribution of resources andcommunity input and pointed outthe many errors in their meetingreport. The Mayor also spokeabout the amount of resourcesgone west of Hornsby on projectslike the Galston Horse RidingFacility. So that’s it. When the new HornsbyPool is built it will be about thesame size as the old one whichwas too small when it wascondemned and too far away formany Hornsby Shire residents, especially children living northof Hornsby. So after 30 years of brokenpromises, people north of Hornsbyhave to make some decisions.Mick Marr, Berowra HeightsA Ward Councillor Nathan Tilburywill respond to Mick Marr’s letterin the next edition of The BushTelegraph Weekly. EdDear BT,I’m a Berowra resident and have astory that I would like to share.I have developed a drugand alcohol campaign calledUntoXicated that was bornein Berowra and is now gettingworldwide recognition. The idea for this campaign wasformed during my 10 years as ascout leader with the Berowra andMount Kuring Gai Scout Groups. To change the perception thatScouts was all about knots andkhaki uniforms, I created a rangeblack shirts with bold imagery anddesigns depicting the strength ofour local youth. This approach wasan immediate hit with both them -and their peers.I decided then to apply myunconventional approach tothe drug and alcohol problem.By creating bold graphics depictingthe inner strength of individuals,my designs now empowerthose who refrain from drugs andalcohol, globally!I have now formed a nondenominational, worldwidecommunity from Malaysia toColumbia. Our global movement is nowsupported by over 3700 fans within8 months on our UntoxicatedFacebook Page. HEALTH AND BEAUTYPRICELESSPEARLSBy Ralph EstherbyI spent a few days last week planningsome advertising and some newsigns for our Church. I wanted to findthe right picture that spoke the rightmessage about who we are and whatwe offer. I wanted something bright, hopeful and attractive, a picture thatwould make people want to think aboutwhat was being offered. If you had to sum up yourself in a singlepicture what would it be?Would it be a picture when you were‘dressed to the nines’ or when you wererelaxed and sitting on the lounge athome?Would it be a caricature highlightingsomething out of your personalityor would it be a serious portraitdemonstrating your finer qualities?Would it be a ‘LOL Cats’ photo or apicture of a classic car or motorcycle?Would it be a Sunrise or a Sunset?Would it feature the colour blue or red?Whether we like it or not we seemto spend a lot of our time planninghow others will view us. We dress incertain ways, we cut our hair in certainstyles, some of us wear earrings andpiercings, and others have tattoos. Wetry to project an image of who we areand what is important to us. Some aremore focussed upon this than othersbut we all do it – we all view ourselvesin a certain way and would like othersto see it.There have been are many picturesand depictions of Jesus throughout thecenturies. Some show Him with blueeyes and blond hair, others show Himsurrounded by His disciples or carryinga lamb between His shoulders. Somefocus upon His face, others focusupon His supposed ‘halo’, others tryto capture the wonder of His miraclesor His healings… but have you everstopped to think about what picture orimage Jesus Himself would choose? There is one image that stands outabove all others, it has been found incatacombs of the 1st Century and inChurches throughout the generations,it has been embroidered on garmentsand painted upon the side of buildings,it has been worn as jewellery and it is asign which brings comfort and hope. The image He chose is the plain, simpleand unadorned Cross.“the message of the cross is foolishnessto those who are perishing, but to thosewho are being saved it is the power ofGod.” 1 Corinthians 1:18Do you have a comment or aquestion?ralph.estherby@gmail.com‘Breakthrough Church’, meets at9.30am Sundays at the PerformingArts Centre (Old Bowling Club)Edgeworth David Ave Hornsby -9477 7222The Talk atBerowra GardenClub was …FRANGIPANISAnthony Grassi was the speakerat Berowra Garden Club at theirlast monthly meeting in March. The subject was Frangipanisabout which Anthony is verypassionate. Frangipani is thecommon name for Plumeriawhich is a relatively small treegrowing to 4-6 m in height andjust about as wide. The highly fragrant flowersappear from December to Aprilin Australia. Most familiar arethe white and yellow bloomsbut they also come in a myriadof tropical and sunset colours.Anthony passed around a basketof colourful and perfumed flowersfor members to enjoy.Frangipanis are native to South andCentral America and not to Hawaiialthough most of the Hawaiian leisare made from Frangipani flowers! In modern Polynesian culture theFrangipanis can be worn by womento indicate their relationship status- over the right ear if seeking arelationship, and over the left earif taken! To grow Frangipanis successfullyat least 6 hours of full sun eachday is required in well-drainedsoil in a frost free position. In theSydney region they are mainlyseen in coastal gardens againstnorth facing walls. Their rootsystem is not invasive and theycan be easily grown in pots.Fertilise around the drip linewith an organic fertiliser highin nitrogen, potassium andphosphorus. Be careful whenpruning as flowers appear on 2year old growth. The cuttings canbe left to callous over and thenpotted up for more plants.Photo: Garden Clubmembers Gwen Patersonand Pam Naylon with speakerAnthony Grassi.WINTERWALKING –TREAT YOURFEETWith winter approaching nowis the time to think aboutyour feet. There is no longerany reason to suffer tiredand sore feet.Forbes Footwear in Hornsbyis known as the Home ofOrthotic Friendly Fashion. They can provide shoes tobe worn with your orthoticsthat are not only good foryour feet but eye catching aswell. They can also supplyshoes to accommodateconditions such as bunions, hammer toes and diabetes.Drop in and speak to one ofdiscuss your needs.Forbes Footwear islocated at 153 PACIFICHIGHWAY HORNSBY.SKINIAL TATTOOREMOVALNew to Australia, isavailable Exclusively atNon laser tattoo removal:BEFOREAFTERCALL FOR CONSULTATIONwww.fortheloveofbeauty.com.au9476 6090www.skinial.com.auHEEL PAIN“It is not necessary toput up with HEEL PAIN,”says Mrs ChardPODIATRIST.There are several causes of heelpain, the most common beingPLANTAR FASCIITISPlantar Fasciitis is simply inflammationof the big strong band on the bottomof the foot (the plantar fascia).Symptoms usually begin as a ‘stonebruise’ type of pain, increasing tochronic pain, especially first thing inthe morning or after rest. This kind of pain is easily treated byrealigning the foot and leg, whichreduces the trauma, allowing theinjured foot to repair.FOR AN APPOINTMENT CALL9482 2227.519 Pacific Hwy.
