BACK BURBLES
Provided someone puts up their hand to succeed me this will be the last issue of our magazine that I edit. The last four
years have been a steep learning curve and I leave with a greater knowledge of MSWord than I started with. Even my
typing speed has improved even though I still use the “hunt and peck” method! The limitations of word have made it
difficult to improve the magazine layout more than we have but perhaps someone with a greater knowledge desktop
publishing will step up and further enhance the look.
Over the last 4 years we have gone from being a simple newsletter to a format that is more like a magazine. We have
introduced colour both on the cover and in the centre pages which brings to life the best of our photos.
All this would not have been possible without the foresight and drive of past president Bill Ingham. Bill has sourced
almost all our cover stories and his son Michael has given freely of his time and expertise in preparing the covers for the
printer. Bill also saved the Club many dollars by finding us a printer who did a better job at a much lower cost - Hundreds
and Thousands is the most costly of our Club’s activities.
There are many to thank for their contributions, help and advice. The content would be far less interesting without our
regular contributors - “Side Exhaust” who has regaled and amused us with his anecdotes, knowledge and his obvious love
of motor vehicles in general and the Healey in particular, Iain McPherson who spends hours researching his articles on
racing Healeys, Rod Vogt and the members of Team Healey who have given us insight into what competition brings to
them, and the others who from time to time have written articles both at my request and off their own bat.
A special thanks too to Gordon Lindner who stood in for me during the year and whose proof reading has prevented a lot
more mistakes from appearing and to Keith and Enid Nankervis who pack and post the magazine each month.
I must also thank Patrick Quinn and Hazel Lloyd the editors of “Flat Chat” and “Healeys West”. They have allowed me to
use articles from their magazines and the layout of their publications has provided a few ideas too.
Last, but not least, thanks to Marion for putting up with a hermit for at least 3 days each month. I’m not much company
when trying to concentrate on the job in hand.
Our printer for the last 3 years, PDG Graphics, has ceased business and this edition is being produced by Galaxy Print &
Design who have done work for President Paul in the past. Geoff from PDG is supervising the print run so the change
should be seamless.
To all of the Club Members: There is more to our Club than just being a member. The Committee works extremely hard
and give freely of their time. More help would be appreciated. Remember - the more you contribute the more you get
back!
There will be no January edition.
Seasons greetings and happy, safe Healeying.
General Meeting, and AGM – December 6 – We’re still
looking for some of our members to come forward to take
on, or share the roles of Editor and Social Secretary.
Please bring a small plate of food for supper.
Our Guest speaker is Simon Seear, with another of his
passions – 4W driving through inhospitable country.
Simon’s display vehicle is his Land Rover Discovery,
replete in its expedition kit, for his recent journey through
Mongolia.
AHOC Presentation Luncheon 2012 – Sunday,
December 9 – At the time of writing, we have in excess of
130 members and guests ready to enjoy a wonderful time
in our clubrooms and, celebrate the achievements of the
past 12 months and, much, much more! This, largely
subsidised function provides a special opportunity for all
members to utilise our clubrooms and, catch up with old
friends and, make new ones!
As my predecessor, Bill Vaughan, commented – how time
flies when you’re having fun! 12 months has passed, all
too quickly. I have certainly been privileged to have had the
benefit, experience and, support of your Committee,
throughout the year working, on your behalf to promote our
marque and provide opportunities wherever possible to
enjoy our Healeys and the company of our fellow
members, whether in competition or social spheres.
Our year has had many highlights and achievements.
Geoff and Ann Neagle’s “Natter Lunch” mid January, saw
55 Healey owners enjoying the traditional start to our year
together – great company, super weather, in a perfect
setting! The following week saw the inaugural Western
Region run from Mt. Duneed to Birregurra – the forerunner
of many excellent runs throughout the year, in league with
Chris Lamrock’s North East classic vehicle group (some
quick peddlers in that group!).
The AHOC Committee met for a SWOT Analysis
(strengths/weaknesses/opportunities &threats) day – an
ongoing management tool that is being used to benefit our
club in future years.
In February - Bill Ingham informed us about the European
Healey Rallies and, international ambassadorship –
bringing back memories for those who have done it! And,
earmarking the possibilities for those who would like to
take their Healeys overseas.
The David Calleja Car Show, at Bacchus Marsh was a
huge gathering of all things automotive and well worth
visiting – pity about the weather on the day - red dust (but
we should not complain – Steve Pike had five vehicles,
including the Streamliner, all commensurately coated!).
Arthur Tuckett’s Southern ROF run to Bass Estate Winery
at Loch, on the same day as David Kelly’s Western Region
run to “Toomwilloo” at Winchelsea, with 50 in attendance,
were both, great successes.
Annette Aitken ran a breakfast run to Flinders Golf Club at
Feb’s end, with 30+ attendees – great to see many new
members joining us!
The VHRR Phillip Island Historics, in March, saw 17
Healeys in the enclosure on turn one, plus another dozen
around the carparks – obviously, some of our members
don’t like to walk the extra distance to the corner! – a
fantastic day for all classic car enthusiasts!
April – general meeting – sometimes, little things mean a
lot! Chris Coughlin discovered we had no refrigeration –
he promptly organized ice and tubs for our drinks – Shayne
Macintosh happened to have a replacement fan in his truck
PRESIDENT”S REPORT DECEMBER 2012
– and, spent much of our meeting repairing our bar-fridge –
well done guys!
The Western Region run to the Fletchers at Bacchus
Marsh was preceded by the unveiling of NOJ393 – Steve
Pike kindly opened up his premises for the large group of
very interested members and friends.
The RACV – AOMC Classic Showcase was a fantastic day
for our marque! One for us to exhibit immense pride in the
fabulous display of Healeys – we didn’t win the best club
display but, in our minds – WE DID! Huge thanks to all
members for their support – to Rob Rowlands and the
Healey Factory team; Steve Pike, Peter Rowlands, Peter
Jackson, Greg Kilmartin and Noel Stevens from Classic
Wiring Looms - not forgetting, for a moment, the super
efforts from Arthur Tuckett and Peter Heading. What a
great day!
May – Historic Winton saw a damp start at Yarra Glen turn
into a brilliant clear blue sky by the Merton Gap and a
terrific day at the track – 23 Healeys in the enclosure and
another three in the car park (after a few days of heavy
rain, the general conditions were excellent – bar the thick
mud in the classic car park (AHOC were privileged with our
own “top spot” – the highest point in the show-car parking
area).
June – a busy month, commencing with Jeff Gillard’s very
successful “Buy/Swap/Sell” night – should be a feature on
every future calendar! Southern ROF run to Lazzar Winery
at Balnarring. North Eastern fang to Jamieson, then
Kevington, for lunch. Later in the month – peninsula run to
Rex Genoni’s Tooradin Sports Club and, the North East
group run to the Yarra Valley – Oakridge Winery for lunch,
then on to Tarrawarra Gallery, for the “Archibald” finalists.
July – Sandown MSCA - A cool start, with the track drying
out – good support from our AHOC members. Heavens
above, we have a library – huge thanks to Mick and Ron
Smith (“Drivers”), Russell Catling and his team and Bill
Metcalf, for cleaning/painting and final set-up. The JCCV
“Christmas in July” saw 57 folk enjoying a run down to
Frankston/Mornington before a three-course lunch at
Rosalie St. This may be a better idea for a Tri-club run, in
the future!
August – many thanks to Peter Stanley for his impromptu
chat about his and Anne’s trip to Le Mans and the UK.
Barb and Bryan Meredith’s Rusty Springs weekend was,
as previous, a great success.
September - Eric Patterson indulged us with his
recollections of former fun times in AHOC Vic. Mick Smith
decided to throw a spanner in the works with a broken leg
(just to see if it would slow her down!). The inaugural Mike
Forrester Picnic was held at Albert Park, with in excess of
50 members attending, including Jill and Matt Forrester.
Wow! What a month October was! Arthur and Jill Tuckett
showed the way to Kilcunda, on the ROF run, top down in
torrential rain. The Winton Six-Hour Race, considering a
few mechanical constraints, the competition teams did a
great job, with excellent member support, on the Sunday.
Docklands, for our Healey Display Day, on the 21 st was
very successful with a superb display of our Healeys and
Sprites. 84 AHOC members from Victoria and South
Australia, met in Port Fairy for our annual mini rally – fine
weather prevailed for a great weekend.
November commenced with Peter and Lyn Edwards
hosting their Melbourne Cup Day luncheon and, they
weren’t immune to the prevailing damp, on the day – that
didn’t deter the happy group.
4 Hundreds & Thousands December 2012

Historic Sandown from 9-11 November saw many of our
competition team in action and Healeys on display, at the
rear of the Grandstand. 87 members of AHOC, JCCV and
AHSDC journeyed to Bonnie Doon, on November 11 –
stopping off for the Remembrance Day Service in Yea –
perfect weather for a very good run.
Huge thanks – to all our guest speakers and display
vehicle owners, for giving us their time and, sharing their
interests and classic (with a sprinkling of modern) vehicles
with interested members. Likewise, our gratitude goes out
to our hard working supper roster members throughout the
year - delighted to have them all and, they are a
fundamental and most important part of our general
meetings.
In closing, I wish to thank specifically, my Committee
Members, on whom I depended, for so much, during the
past year, in ensuring the smooth operational management
of our club. A big thankyou to our CMC members for their
behind the scenes work. Where would we be without Chris
Coughlin, Ron Smith and John Raisbeck, manning the bar!
Many thanks to all those members who have willingly given
me the benefit of their experience and advice, in order for
me to do my job.
We are looking forward to a another great year, in 2013
with increased member participation, hopefully, in all areas.
GENERAL BUSINESS:
The long mooted changes to legal changes to Incorporated Associations – have finally appeared – the major effects
to AHOC are that our Secretary, Brian Aitken, becomes our new Public Officer and, in future years, we do not have to
have our financial statements audited before submission to Consumer Affairs. A run-down of the changes will be
published on www.healeyvic.com.au for your perusal.
As you are aware, next month is our Annual General Meeting - in conjunction with the December General Meeting.
We have vacancies on the committee for a Social Secretary (or Secretaries) and an Editor, for 100s & 1000s. These
positions have to be filled – it is unfair of our membership to expect the other Committee Members to continue to carry
that workload. Please speak to me, re the Social Secretaries’ positions or Harvey Pearce, re the Editor’s position. As
well, please bring a small plate of food for supper.
Subscription Invoices – As I alluded to in 100s & 1000s, our invoices have been mailed out, with unchanged
membership fees. The only change was to the new membership joining fee, which increased to $80.
Meeting closed at 9.05pm.
Next meeting, December 6, 2012. This is our AGM!
Following the meeting, our guest speaker, Sue Huse gave us a run down on her new Subaru BRZ – wonderful looking car
at a very reasonable cost! Sue also spoke about the motoring and flying exploits of her father, George who unfortunately
was unable to be with us tonight. We hope that George may be able to talk to us about his very full and fascinating life
AUSTIN-HEALEYS THAT RACED IN AUSTRALIA No 22
Mischa Ravdell raced a number of significant cars before
he started racing an Austin-Healey in 1955. He was the
grandson of a wealthy Jewish businessman who had been
kidnapped at gun point from his home in South Yarra in
1949 when a sizeable ransom was demanded. The
newspapers reported that Mischa picked his grandfather
up from Russell Street Police Station in his little sports car.
In 1948 Mischa bought and raced the Wylicar which had
been built by Arthur Wylie and which had won the
Australian Hillclimb Championship in 1947. Arthur
continued to race the car in the Scratch races and Mischa
drove it in the Handicap events. He then bought one of the
HRG’s which had been imported by Tony Gaze. Later in
1949 at a Race Meeting at Fishermans Bend, Mischa was
having his first drive of the HRG when he hit a straw bale
and overturned three times. He was quickly released. He
only suffered abrasions and a minor back injury which kept
him in plaster for some weeks. Police investigated the
incident as it was believed the steering had been tampered
with. On the same day the house of a barrister was
bombed and police questioned the man charged in
connection with the earlier kidnapping.
One of the corners at Fishermans Bend was called Ravdell
Corner. I haven’t been able to determine if this was
because the Company sponsored the Corner or if this was
the corner where Mischa rolled the HRG. In 1957 the track
layout was altered and Ravdell Corner was eliminated.
The HRG was eventually sold to Bill Clark, but in the
meantime Mischa had bought the Cooper Vincent of John
Snow., and he ran it in the 1952 Australian Grand Prix at
Bathurst. When Mischa sold the Cooper Vincent in 1955 it
became known as the Irving- Cooper Vincent in which Lex
Davison won the Australian Hillclimb Championship in
1955, 1956, and 1957.
Mischa made his first competition appearance in an Austin-
Healey at Rob Roy in November 1955. At that Meeting –
“Mischa Ravdell driving his Healey to good purpose made
fastest time on his first and second climbs”. He beat Jeff
Brotherton who was making his first appearance in the
Austin Distributors 100/S, managing a time of 32.25 sec
compared to Mischa’s time of 31.34 sec. which was first in
class.
Mischa Ravdell at Fishermans Bend in 1956
He advertised the car for sale in October 1956, and again
in November.
The Ravdell family ran Ravdell Rubber Company in
Melbourne, and later in Richmond, but also had an interest
in buying wartime disposal stocks in Britain for sale in
China and allegedly to Palestine. The later activity was the
background to the kidnapping and a number of court
appearances for Mischa’s father and grandfather.
Very few people I have spoken to remember him. The
closest I have got was a fellow competitor in an Austin-
Healey who recalled that he was aloof and didn’t mix with
the ‘ordinary” people. Mischa does not appear to have
continued in Motor Sport.
The identity of this car is unknown. I have never been able
to find out what its registration number was, what colour it
was, nor anyone claiming to later own the car.
“The Melbourne Mille - Reflections
.
Over the past 14 years Max & Miles Hobson have run a
touring event for pre 1972 classic cars called the
Melbourne Mille. This event is loosely based on the Mille
Miglia and the more recent California Mille. The objective
is to cover at least 1,000 miles/1,600 km approximately on
a set navigational route avoiding primary roads and using
interesting driver’s roads through great scenery with
interesting food and accommodation stops.
Over the years a number of Austin Healey owners have
participated and waved the Healey flag in this event
throughout southern mainland Australia and Tasmania.
In early October 2012 Ken Tame and myself set off on a
Sunday afternoon for the start of the event from Acheron
next morning. Joining us in this year’s event were a
number of classic cars-, Alfa Romeos, Aston Martin, Austin
Healeys, Bolwell, Cobra, Cooper S, Jaguar-Saloon, E
Types, XK 120, XK 150, MGA ,Mustang, Porsche 911 and
356, Sunbeam Tiger, Triumph TR3s and others. Previous
years have seen various Ferraris, MG TC, Alvis , Bentley,
Maserati, Lotus, Morgan and MGBV8 starters.
Over the next 4 and a half days we covered 2,250km
through regional Victoria’s alpine regions plus south
eastern NSW alpine and coastal regions. Helmer my
faithful Halda Twinmaster assists in the route navigation
and charting our progress (GPS seems to be appearing in
more cars today than previously- they can be useful as a
secondary speedometer).
Over the years that we have entered we have had the
usual variety of weather that can be experienced in SE
Australia during October- heat, dust, rain , hail and this
year, snow along the Alpine Way out of Thredbo. 2012
was the first year that we have appreciated the inbuilt 3
litre Healey heating system that can bake you in summer
but warm you nicely in a snowy winter.
The event whilst strictly non competitive involves daily
challenging drives of approximately 400- 500 km with
scheduled luncheon breaks and unscheduled occasional
car breaks- as we experienced last year when we holed
the Alloy radiator in my Healey - (belated thanks to Rob &
Marissa Rowland for their assistance) causing an
unscheduled overnight stay in Tathra.
This year Ken & I were keen to have a trouble free run in
the Healey and use the event to get our logistics organised
for our 2013 trip to the Crieff rally in Scotland, then Ken
going off to France & Italy in Ken’s BN7 to retrace the
Coupes Des Alpes events of the 1960’s.
One of the great features of the event is gaining an
appreciation of the relative strengths and weaknesses of
the various cars entered as they cope with the various
terrain that we travel across.
Whilst there are quicker more powerful cars-( Mustang,
Cobra, Aston etc,) more nimble cars in the tight alpine
descents (Alfa Romeo , Porsche, Mini Cooper) the Healey
as an overall package copes well with high speed touring,
long alpine ascents & descents as well as comfortable
cabin accommodation.
Every time I drive the Healey every day for 5 days I do
reflect on what an epic journey the London – Sydney
Marathon competitors did many years ago in a Healey
3000 as well as the more well known historic Healey rally
competitors in the 50’s and 60’s.
Our cars are great cars much admired by other classic
enthusiasts for their classic lines & looks, their
performance, their robust yet simple design and their
beautiful sound.
If you haven’t done a Mille put in on your to-do list as an
enjoyable opportunity to drive your Healey for 5 days
across a variety of back roads throughout South Eastern
Australia.
Thanks very much to Miles & Max Hobson for their great
event organisation over the past 14 years and to the
Healey Factory for the vehicle preparation.
Learnings over the years:
Expect the unexpected.
Make sure your navigator has his correct optical correctives.
Always reset the trip meter when you refuel.
Assume the car in front of you does not know where he or she is going.
Get thoroughly prepared before you start the engine and start driving.
Make sure that the driver & navigator are on the “same page”- mentally.
Avoid dropping the route instructions from the vehicle.
Enter and exit country towns observing speed limits.
Don’t make assumptions when investigating a mechanical problem.
Having a leak in a Healey is not a sign of incontinence but a design problem common to nearly all Healeys
Brumby shit , ice & snow whilst different colours are all slippery.
Know a few good jokes that you haven’t told before
Enjoy yourself at all times.
Love your car whatever happens!
See you on the road somewhere.
There’s always more to Tasmania than meets the eye.
An exquisite setting always has another story. Even
avoiding the tormented, dark history of the picturesque
ruins of Port Arthur and the weathered dignity of Sarah
Island, the tourist should always ask another question.
The ghosts of the past are everywhere.
The enthusiastic chuffing of the Abt Railway loco as it
crosses the Teepookana Bridge on its expensively
recreated trip through the wilderness to Queenstown might
delight its passengers, but below swirls the poisoned water
of Tasmania’s King River as it carries discharge from the
leaking Mt Lyell copper mine tailings dam to kill the fish in
Macquarie Harbour. The soup carries the ghosts of
industrial exploitation.
Stand in Strathgordon and marvel at the magnificent
prospect of Lake Pedder, until someone shows you a
photo of the drowned Lake Pedder beach, eerily still down
there.
Be thrilled by the single engined landing at deserted, dusty
Maleluca and inspired as you cross the peaceful brown
waters of Bathurst Harbour, sipping the pure tannin stained
water on the way to climb Mt Rugby. But be afraid by the
boaty’s stories of sudden violent and unforecastable
squalls which knock them flat. For a few, the boat never
righted.
Bushwalking is a wonderful way to engage with Tasmania -
and the 80 kilometre, 6 day Overland Track is the king of
walks through country which is so hard, no one has ever
found a way of ruining it. But not for want of trying, with
ghostly, forlorn traces of primitive exploration and broken
dreams.
"The ghosts of Team Healey haunt the roads of Tasmania"
It’s no different for the many groups of classic cars which
excitedly queue on the Station Pier dock to board the long
ramps of the Spirit of Tasmania, including many Austin
Healeys. Tasmania is a great destination for a Big Healey
adventure, with more of the world’s greatest driving roads
than any other place on earth. Not the absolute best,
which are in Victoria, but more of them and longer lasting
and more varied.
But as always in Tasmania, there’s more to it than that.
HAUNTED ISLE
bove the ust.
As every Big Healey drives onto the dock very early in the
morning in Devonport, he gets infused, inspired by the left
behind eager spirits, the restless souls of the long gone
Targa Healeys. These spirits haunt the magical roads of
the island, waiting to live again. The ghosts of racers lie
dormant, until the resonant song of that mighty six or the
throb of the old torquey four echoes off the dolerite cliffs
and penetrates the ancient forests.
This is not a people thing, owners and drivers and
passengers are mainly not aware. These spirits pass
between the Healeys and only the Healeys. So even an
expensively restored BJ8 with gleaming Daytons and
tailored suitcases knows at once he has to perform and
trash any crappy, poncy E or B or TR which it comes
across. All the driver knows is that things feel tauter, more
responsive, more eager.
So many roads in Tasmania have Healey ghosts. Although
the last time a Healey competed in Targa was 2005, and is
unlikely to do so again, four Bathurst Healeys formed Team
Healey and between 1999 and 2003 won two Team Prizes,
2 podiums, three Category win, 20 Targa plates, three Gold
and a Diamond Targa. The ghosts of these old warriors
can’t bear to leave the scene of excitement.
Just out of Devonport is the C144 and Paloona Dam - a
nice spot for a picnic. But as you munch on your BLT, that
frisson of heat is a red Healey pounding through the rain,
power sliding the long climbing left hander.
The C137 out of Sheffield through Paradise on the way to
Mole Creek is where the you’ll find a series of curves which
on a sunny afternoon might make you smile at the nice feel
of your Healey, but which the ghosts are taking at 6000 in
third, left foot on the brake to get the front down for the
next right. After the second curve is a wooden bridge, like
ice in the wet so it flicks sideways.
Along the A8 from Launceston to Scottsdale is the
Sideling, 14 kilometres of treacherous diesel lubricated
tarmac which twists and turns like the Red Baron up to the
plateau on top of the range and then plunges down. At the
top is a 600 metre straight sometimes hidden in dense fog.
Here the navigators calmly count down the metres as the
Healeys reach 185 kph into a pea souper. When the sun
goes behind a cloud and the temperature drops when you
go there, you’ll know why.
Stop for a coffee in Ross and find the level crossing. Not
very level, you’ll see, so here is where your Healey will try
to fly. Let him go, let him fly - he wants to feel the thrill.
Right down in the Huon Valley is a little place called Cygnet
- as the road plunges down to the Huon River, close your
eyes and listen up and you’ll hear a Healey flat in overdrive
top then suddenly the screeching rip of a double spin. But
no sickening crash. Later the Porsche which failed to let
the Healey pass gets a big penalty.
Hellyer Gorge, Mt Arrowsmith, Strahan, Queenstown
corkscrew, Elephant Pass, St Mary’s, Cranbrook, Tarraleah
- these and many others are all haunted Healey places, the
names resonating with memories.
14 Hundreds & Thousands December 2012

But maybe if there is one road
which is more haunted than any
other, where the ghosts will
goose your Healey It is the 38
kilometre piece of tarmac called
“Cethana”. This is widely
considered to be the finest, most
testing section of driving road in
the world.
Starting on the C138 where
tourists line up for the wonders
of King Solomon's Mines near
Mole Creek, this wonderful road
slaloms down the Mersey Valley
to a sharp right into a massive
curving climb up Mt Claude to
the Liena plateau. The headlong
rush through hairpins and dizzy
edges, along the rim of the
breathtaking look-out precipice,
down through twisted rock and
shattered escarpments to the
biggest stop of your life - don’t
stop and Lake Cethana is 400
metres straight down - before a
final hairpin rich climb back up to
the Cradle escarpment at Moina.
Across the top is nearly 2 kilometres of straights linked by
‘nines’ - long curves. At 100 kph, you rest your arm on the
door and breath in the fresh, stimulating forest view. But at
double that speed through here, in overdrive top, in the
damp, your sphincter is the main muscle working, as it tries
to grip the seat with the same grip it wants the AO32’s to
have on the tarmac.
In the summer, it’s quiet up here. Pull over on the edge,
switch off your Healey and imagine. The big 6 C-series
with all the race mods pulling the 4.3:1 diff makes a
fantastic melodious howl at 6,500 rpm and you hear it
already on the big climb up to the plateau where you’ve
stopped.
That year, resurfacing had left loose gravel and the revs
rise and fall as the Big Healey grips and drifts. That’ll be
third and overdrive third, the high pressure pump changing
almost instantly on the switch.
As the racer lines up the ‘seven right with gravel’ into the
longest, fastest corner in Aussie motor sport, there’s a
momentary feather. That intoxicating howl reaches a
crescendo and suddenly the blur of red and white is past
you and gone, the doppler effect amplifying the change
into overdrive top - that’s 200 kph.
With it go the ghosts, leaving your Healey restless, wanting
to stretch its legs. Your imagining is over. Reality across
this magical piece of Healey history is a camper trailer
being pulled by an ancient Nissan and a young couple in a
cheap Korean rental.
There’s always more to Tasmania, especially for your
Healey.
THE RETIRED NAVY CPO WINE TASTER
At a wine merchant's warehouse the regular taster died, and the director started looking for a new one to hire. A retired
Chief Petty Officer, drunk and with a ragged dirty look, came to apply for the position.
The director wondered how to send him away. They gave him a glass of wine to taste. The old Chief tried it and said,
"It's a Muscat, three years old, grown on a north slope, matured in steel containers. Low grade but acceptable."
"That's correct," said the boss. "Another glass please."
"It's a cabernet, eight years old, south-western slope, oak barrels, matured at eight degrees. Requires three more years
''It's a pinot blanc champagne, high grade and exclusive,'' calmly said the drunk.
The director was astonished and winked at his secretary to suggest something. She left the room and came back in with
a glass of urine. The old Navy Chief tried it.
"It's a blonde, 26 years old, three months pregnant, and if I don't get the job, I'll name the father
BOLWELL HEALEY
This Austin Healey 100 BN1 was purchased by Winston Bolwell in the late 1950s and was subsequently extensively
modified by him into its current configuration.
The car was fitted with an early Jaguar 3.4 motor and gearbox and the front body work extensively modified by Winston to
resemble a Maseratti 300S,using a completely new fibre glass front.
After swapping the car for a Mini in the early 1960s Winston was tragically killed in the mini and the Healey was put aside
by the then owner and not used again.
I have owned the car for in excess of 22 years and it remains almost entirely complete.
The chassis, suspension and brakes have been rebuilt but would require refurbishing. The front bodywork has been
restored but not painted and the rear panels, still 100, require restoration.
The original gearbox is with the car but the 3.4 motor has been unassembled and no longer has the block and head both
of which were no longer restorable.
The many unique features of the car such as the large quick release fuel filler, the alloy egg crate grille and the hard top,
all of which were made by Winston are still with the car. The original windscreen and frame are also still with the vehicle,
as are the fuel gauge, oil pressure and temp gauge and the mechanical Tacho as fitted by Winston.
This car is a unique piece of Australian sports car history and would be a wonderful road car once the restoration is
completed.
Retirement and too many other projects force the reluctant sale.
The Healey Club of Victoria is like a family to me The cards, flowers, phone calls and visits have helped keep me sane.
indifference, so you applied your hungry mouth to me without any guilt or humiliation, and you drove me near crazy while
you drained me. Finally, I drifted off to sleep.
Today when I awoke, you were gone. I searched for you but to no avail. Only the sheets bore witness to last night's
events.
My body still bears faint marks of your enthusiastic ravishing, making it all the more difficult to forget you.
COMPETITION REPORTS
1 HISTORIC SANDOWN November 10/11th 2012
A wonderful entry of 11 AHOC members at the “21st Big Bad Historic Sandown - Return of the Thunder” meeting held in
perfect weather conditions with “position A” garages 5 and 6 for Jackson/Vogt/Duffy/Kaiser/Jamieson/Hook - on pit lane at
the start of the main straight for a prime view of the action.
Having stumped up a considerable fee for garage hire it was nice to see many Club members take advantage of our spot
over the weekend - we should have charged a few dollars to recoup our outlay, particularly from the many strangers who
also enjoyed our hospitality. Actually, this accessibility is one of the things that sets the Historic scene apart from other
prima donna events where the cars and drivers are completely hidden away.
“Big Bad Return of the Thunder” - were they referring to us do you think? In Group S Production Sports Car Races were
Peter Jackson and Brian Duffy in their Big Healeys, Peter Kaiser (Sprite) and Rod Vogt (MGB). John Davies (100/4) from
Western Australia was having his first run at Sandown after several visits to Historic Phillip Island and chose to run with
the Group J, K and L sports and racing cars pre 1930 to 1960 where members Geoff McInnes (1948 Riley Special) and
Graeme Marks (1955 Mac Healey monoposto) competed.
The other event of interest was Regularity with David Kelly (100/4), Bill Vaughan (Sprite) and Rob Jamieson (100/4) in
Division 1 for the older cars, and Tony Rogers (Porsche) and Hamish MacLennan (MGB) running in Division 2. Frank
Hook did Regularity One in his famous Red/Black 100/4 - someone needs to talk Frank in to becoming a financial
member of the Club!
GROUP S Groups Sa, Sb and Sc ran together with a capacity field of 42 cars, and what a quick field it was. There is
a noticeable trend away from pre 1960 Sa cars towards new entries for Group Sc - 1970 to 1977 vintage. Twenty three
Sc cars dominated the 42 car grid, with no less than 11 Porsches and 6 V8 powered machines - 2 De Tomaso Pantera’s,
1 Corvette and 3 MGBGT’s. Throw in 2 more Group Sb V8’s - TVR Tuscan and Corvette - and our poor old British cars
had “Big, Bad AND Thunder” to deal with for sure!
Peter Jackson (3000) qualified 13th and finished 12th in the first two races and completed only one lap in the last race
after a rare mechanical failure. Brian Duffy qualified 21st and finished 19th and then 16th in races one and two. He did
not start race three due to a mechanical failure which had hampered him in the first two races. Peter Kaiser and I ran
side by side all weekend as has become a habit this year. Peter qualified 31st and I had the MGB beside the Sprite in
32nd for Race 1 in a field of 42. Doesn’t sound all that good does it - in fact Peter was 4.5 seconds faster than Sandown
2011 and I was on my best time! It was a very fast field and many mid-fielders had not entered. Peter bested me at the
start and I paid the price for being too careful and lost about 4 places in the first 4 corners as I was rather badly “bullied”
from behind. Peter finished 26th and I finished 30th but not far behind. Race 2 on Sunday morning saw me get the bit
between the teeth and buttocks clenched to pass quite a few cars on lap one to improve to 25th with Peter Kaiser now
just behind in 28th. Rob Raverty kindly emailed me a “Closing Thought” to use in my report sometime and I am going to
use it now - “Why Motor Sport?” Because football, baseball, bowling and golf only require ONE BALL”. Race 3 was 5.15
pm on Sunday afternoon , the last event for the weekend, with a still surprisingly large crowd watching 28 starters that
unfortunately did not include the two Big Healeys. The Sprite and the MGB were still in fine fettle and after much pre race
sledging Peter Kaiser put his money where his mouth was and finished just one place ahead of the MG - 18th versus 19th
after a close tussle. Bring on Historic Phillip Island in March.
There were two viruses in the Healey camp that weekend. I had the first one - sore throat, headache, wracking cough and
no voice left after talking over the sound of race engines all weekend. Hold your sympathy, I certainly didn’t get any from
“she who must be obeyed” or my Doctor/daughter who BOTH said I shouldn’t go to Sandown! What would they know. I
am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing. Ten days later I nearly have my voice back! Apologies to our
supporters who may have wondered why I was not as chatty as usual.
The real viral concern struck Peter Jackson, Brian Duffy and David Kelly (100/4 in regularity) all coming down with
terminal overdrive disease. Brian was suffering before the end of Saturday morning qualifying and was quite hampered in
Race 1 despite the attentions of Nurse Shayne Mackintosh during the day. Shayne consulted Doctor Bruce Dixon who
was already attending another competitor in his open wheeler further up pit row. Dr Dixon arrived bright and early on
Sunday morning with medicine and new parts were surgically installed.
Hundreds & Thousands December 2012 21

Unfortunately the Duffy Healey fell ill again during the Sunday morning race and although finishing a credible 16th Brian
decided it was pointless running the risk of over revving the Healey Six without overdrive down the two long straights and
did not start race three. The virus then spread to the Jackson Healey which lost overdrive on the last lap of Race two on
Sunday morning. Doctor Dixon again attended and had a big thingamee something that checked some sort of pressure
etc and pronounced it very ill indeed. PJ decided to start the last race anyway and PK and I had the rare experience of
seeing the Big White Healey limping off the start line as we stormed past. Both Peter and Brian have less than two weeks
to fix things before the Tasman revival historic meeting in Sydney!
Which bring us to Regularity Division One and the virus which unbelievably struck down the Kelly 100/4 after the Sunday
morning Run Two. Doctor Dixon also attended the Kelly patient but David was left immobile and missed the third and last
run. David had started extremely well with a second placing in Run 1 on Saturday afternoon in a field of 30 odd. Bill
Vaughan (Sprite was 7th, Rob Jamieson 2nd, Frank Hook 8th and our good friend Ross McKinnon in his immaculate
Triumph TR3A was 9th. I mention Ross when I can because he has been a Healey member in the past - Comp Secretary
in fact - and a great friend to all in historic events.
Run Two on Sunday morning saw Bill come in on the end of a tow rope - not clutch or axle as first suspected, just a halfshaft
but irrepairable at Sandown. David came 19th, bested by Ross McKinnon at 11th. David lost points on the lap
when Bill broke down, being distracted by the yellow flag alerting him to Bill’s problem and not seeing the green flag to
resume normal speed - Ross passed David at this point, minimising his lost time. Rob Jamieson and Frank Hook ran the
two red/black Healeys together which was a great sight and in fact finished 2nd/3rd respectively in Run Two and 2nd/1st
respectively in Run Three! Ross finished with a fine 6th. Each Run is an individual event, but if you added up the
cumulative totals - Frank Hook (133), Ross McKinnon (108), followed by OUR members Rob Jamieson (100), and the
non finishers David Kelly (67) and Bill Vaughan (40). Of course , David and Bill had done sufficient laps to score OK in
the AHOC Championship - see below.
In Division Two in a field of 28 Tony Rogers (Porsche) did well to finish 16th, 2nd and 6th for a total score of 107 points
and Hamish MacLennan scored 4th, 23rd and 20th (going too fast!) and a theoretical total of 46 points, both having a
trouble free weekend.
In Group J, K and L Sports and Racing our AHOC members and Associate Championship contenders had a forgettable
time. Geoff McInnes (1948 Riley Special ) qualified well at 10th in a field 31 (compare his time of 1.34.5 with our newer
Group S cars!) and did only 6 of 7 laps in Race One before putting the car away for good. Graeme Marks faired even
worse, qualifying 13th and taking the Mac Healey home before the first race - he tells us now that the problem is solved
and was not too bad. Once again our AHOC Championship scoring system enabled them to score some valuable points
there, despite their limited number of Sandown laps.
# denotes new fastest lap for driver at Sandown
2 MSCA PHILLIP ISLAND November 18th 2012
This is the last event for our 2012 COMPETITION Season. Time is required to compile results and organise trophies
before our Lunch and Trophy Presentations at the Clubrooms on the 9th of December. Coming just one week after the
three day Sandown Historic meeting, and still feeling pretty poorly with the flu, I was very tempted to give this one a miss.
BUT! You should never pass up the chance to run P.I. And I wanted to run the MGB there. With three solid days under
the belt the previous weekend I hoped I would be dialed in and do some good times. And Ken Sadler was making the
effort to come up from Warrnambool. And John Raisbeck was having his very first go at Regularity in his beautifully
prepared Escort and I really needed to make sure he had a good day. And Bill Vaughan had gone to great effort to repair
his Sprite in less than a week just so he could compete. And Russell Baker was entered and we always get put in the
same run group and we always have a lot of fun chasing each other in mock (?) races. And Tim Westover was coming
and we have not seen Tim for a while and I think his Healey is just about the best sounding Healey going around, after the
Jackson Healey. And Rob Raverty was entered - oh well, you can’t win them all! I don’t need any more reasons, I am
going. So tell a little fib - I feel just fine dear - and pay my $180 entry.
The fine forecast deteriorated as the week progressed and at 7.15 am, just after gate opening, the heavens opened up.
John R must have been thinking! By 9 am it was fine and we competed all day in perfect conditions. Selwyn Hall was
our Clerk of Course and he must have breathed a sigh of relief. Mistake, Selwyn! Mark Rae, our MSCA Competition
secretary, nearly fainted when he discovered our Dorian timers were not at the office. They had been taken home by the
WRX Club on Saturday afternoon instead of being left for us. We ran untimed for the first session rather than waste track
time and in our run group (Russell, Bill and myself) we were red flagged after just 3 laps because our Sprite Club mate
Gerry van Oosterom hit the wall coming on to the main straight at very high speed.
22 Hundreds & Thousands December 2012

There was a 45 minute delay while a Civil Ambulance was called to take Gerry to Dandenong Hospital for MRI scans etc
after a lengthy and careful extraction from the wrecked Sprite by our MSCA ambulance and WAP recovery crew. We
have been told since that he is going to be fine, no head trauma, just a fractured shoulder. Get well soon Gerry. A very
sobering experience.
Selwyn and the team did a great job to make up lost time, giving the large 125 car field a minimum of three runs and four
if you stayed to the very end. A passenger session also was retained at lunch time.
Bill, Russell and I ran together in Sprint Group 5 and came home with no mechanical issues. Russell WAS black flagged
for exceeding the 75 decibel limit which he found hard to believe but a suggestion that it might be induction noise saw Bill
Metcalf fashioning a card board cover over the left side front guard “rally vent” and taping it on - no issues on Russell’s
third run. The MGB ran very strongly and Russell and I finished with a fantastic battle at VERY close quarters on our third
run. So much fun that we decided that we would finish the day on that high and passed on our last run. This was my
concession to the flu! The battle with Russ lifted me to first place in Class but still a little slower than the Big Healey. I
thought my 2.03.16 MUST be a new PB for me in the B but fell short by just one one hundreths of a second! Russell
came second in his Class and Bill was 6th in Class A
The Regularity field of ten included four AHOC members. Ken Sadler drove up from Warrnambool in the red/black 100/6,
slept in his two-man tent on Saturday night and ONLY drove back to Melbourne on Sunday night. He had jury duty in
Warrnambool at 2pm Monday. He deserves a trophy. Ken ran very well, and the Healey was more reliable than at his
first event at Sandown earlier this year. At the end Ken discovered that the throttle was not fully opening so expect
improved times. Of course fast times is not the point of regularity and Ken came second in both the timed runs. After a
long break from competition Tim Westover built up momentum and achieved a new best time at Phillip Island,
unfortunately quicker than his nominated time, for 8th and 7th places. Rob Raverty ran consistently around the 2.30 mark
for two fourth placings. We await the official MSCA combined regularity results.
Have I missed someone? Oh yes, John Raisbeck. Having his first go with us at MSCA. First time at Phillip Island. First
serious track day. First run in his magnificent two litre Mark One Ford Escort on which he did most of the work himself.
We have all seen John and Fay’s four and six cylinder Healeys. The Escort is right up there. Fay came down to support
John and as for all new Team Healey members, the crew gave John plenty of advice and support. Comfortably through
paperwork and scrutineering, John had a couple of laps behind a pace car, with other first timers, to see which way the
track goes. To ease John in to the adventure, he followed Rob Raverty for the first session to find the correct lines around
the track. Pity we couldn’t have found someone who actually knew the correct lines! He impressed us all by matching
Rob and his 2.30 lap times, so both nominated 2.30 as there target time. I did say to John that he MIGHT get a LITTLE
quicker as the day goes on. By the end of Run Three John had achieved a fastest lap of 2 minutes 11 seconds! That is
not a typo. 2.11.66! He looked cool, calm and completely in control. Well done John. I could compare John’s time with
other PI lap times of experienced members that I have on record but I don’t want to embarass anyone. Welcome to Team
Healey. Oh, he finished stone motherless last in the MSCA Regularity competition, in true team Healey tradition. Two
eleven is some way off two thirty. We are taking up a collection for a new helmet for John. We fear his current helmet will
be much too small now. Fay was equally enthusiastic when I pointed out that in the future John could run in Sprints and
SHE could double enter the Escort in Regularity. Thankyou to our supporters on the day - Paul MacPherson, Jim Reddy,
Graeme Marks, Dennis Varley, Bill Metcalf, Leon O’Brien, Martin Brown, Fay Raisbeck and Sue Raverty.
A CLOSING THOUGHT He who dies with the most toys is nonetheless DEAD.
ROD VOGT
******************************************************************************************************************************************
He was in ecstasy with a huge smile on his face as his wife moved forwards, then backwards, forward, then backwards
again....back and forth...back and forth... in and out...in and out.
Her heart was pounding...her face was flushed...then she moaned, softly at first, then began to groan louder.
Finally, totally exhausted, she let out an almighty scream and shouted,
"OK, OK! I CAN'T park the bloody car! You do it, you SMUG bastard!"
Best definition
There's an annual contest at the Griffiths University, Australia, calling for the most appropriate definition of a
contemporary term. This year's term was 'political correctness'.
The winning student wrote:'Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly
promoted by mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a piece of shit by
the clean end.
