Max Calkin, Bass
Jack Black might not present himself as a likely influence for a lot of jazz
students in New York City, but the fun and liveliness that he displayed in the
movie "School of Rock" was enough to kickstart Max Calkin's lifelong passion
for music and the bass. Max was born and raised in a small town in New
Hampshire where he received his first electric bass at age nine. He began
playing professionally at age 13 at venues around New Hampshire. It wasn't
until 2008 that Max was introduced to the upright bass, but he immediately fell
in love with the instrument's sound. In 2010, Max moved to New York City to
study jazz bass at Manhattan School of Music.
Conor Szymanski, Drums
“Music is a living thing. When you play, it’s like investigating a single cell. As
you become familiar with its details, you start to recognize and feel these deep
flows and currents – and then that single cell blooms into more and more cells
that pull you into this journey. It’s an exploration that grows into
an amazing relationship.”
Conor Szymanski grew up in New Jersey. He got his first drum kit at the age of
five and began serious lessons when he was 10. Through middle school and
high school, he studied extensively with Billy Hart, Mark Guiliana, Jeff
Hirshfield, Dion Parsons and Steve Lyman. Today, he studies with John Riley
at the Manhattan School of Music, where he is completing his sophomore year.
In 2010, Conor shared in the Outstanding Big Band Rhythm Section award at
the Annual Charles Mingus High School Competition & Festival. In 2011, he
won the drummer’s chair in the New York Youth Symphony’s Jazz Band
Classic. Conor has performed with Donny McCaslin, Christian McBride, Chick
Corea, Jim McNeely and Duane Eubanks among other notable players. He’s
appeared at some of the top venues in the New York/Philadelphia area,
The Artists’ Invitational
Silent Auction
The Artists’ Invitational features works in a wide variety of mediums. The
artists are regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized. We have asked
the artists for a piece that reflects their best work in the medium they most
prefer. Thus, all the artists who have works on display here tonight have given
us a glimpse into their personal vision and creativity. Many of the contributing
artists are among our guests at the event, so please take a moment to thank them
personally for sharing their talents with us. All works contributed to The
Artists’ Invitational will be showcased and sold in a Silent Auction format
throughout the evening. High bidders are asked to pay for and take home their
artwork at the end of the evening.
The Artists
KAREN BAKKE, who holds a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in design, works
rendering classes at Syracuse University, where she is the chair of the
Department of Environmental Arts, Consumer Studies and Retailing. She does
calligraphy and illumination and collects 19th and 20th century antiques. Her
TODD CONOVER graduated with a degree in fashion design from The
College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. He began his
career as a fashion designer starting his own fashion business together with
designer Jeffrey Mayer. For 15 years, ConoverMayer sold nationwide to stores
and boutiques including Bergdorf Goodman, Barney’s, Nieman Marcus and
Saks Fifth Avenue. Todd is an assistant professor of design in The College of
Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University, a position he has held since
1995. His teaching specialty is digital fashion illustration and presentation using
Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Illustration, graphics, and fine art have always
been a part of Todd’s visual vocabulary. He likes to work in a variety of
traditional mediums in conjunction with digital technology. Todd says: “My
work tends to focus on fashion, style, and the evolution of emotion towards
form, color, pattern, and line.” Metal is a relatively new medium for Todd and
he has been working in it since 2011. Jewelry, utilitarian objects, lamps and
vessels have been the focus to date. Todd is a member of the Society of
Illustrators, SNAG, and the Society of North American Goldsmiths
MICHELLE DaRin’s unique, handcrafted necklaces are mini masterpieces.
ALISON FISHER is a native of the Syracuse area. While having lived in such
diverse locations at Hawaii, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and California,
she returned to the area in 1992 and now makes her home with her husband and
son in Manlius, N.Y. As a self-taught artist with a background in commercial
art and gallery management, she launched her career in fine art in 1987. Her
work has been shown in fine art shows and galleries across the southwest and
east coast, and is included in the corporate and private. Alison’s deep love of
abstract form was inspired by such artists as Kandinsky and Rothko, both
seemingly reflected in her own diverse work. In her mixed media paintings;
consisting of acrylic, titanium, pastel, gold ink, tea leafing, and copper wire, she
continues to explore the concepts of balance and perception. While her acrylic
on paper impressionistic pieces lead the viewer on their own journey into peace
and tranquility, her total body of work clearly reflects her own evolution as an
artist and the beauty of the quest.
MARGIE HUGHTO, beginning with her early studies at Cranbrook Academy
of Art, has examined ceramics in a non-traditional format, finding her métier in
the slab or wall-mural format. Former Everson curator Peter Doroshenko called
color, shape, and style. It includes references to landscape and to painterly and
natural abstraction. Her works are alternatively monumental and intimate in
scale, mute and garish in color, objectively descriptive and purely abstract in
subject matter; her glaze application can be flat and smooth or thickly built up.
Having received an undergraduate degree in art education from SUNY Buffalo
and an M.F.A. in ceramics from Cranbrook in 1971, she joined the faculty of
Syracuse University, where she continues to teach ceramics. In recent years,
#121 Artists’ Invitational Piece by David Rufo
“Green Apple” is an oil painting in Rufo’s fruit series. Work on the fruit series
began in 1999 and came about through the artist’s desire to find an iconic
approach to his painting. Here, the painting process was swift, vigorous, and
taken directly from nature. To create these works, he began by setting down the
background color, using a mixture of ivory black, burnt sienna, and alizarin
crimson. Immediately following, the foreground image was applied before the
background color had dried, thus capturing the action of the brush.
Compositionally, the works are rather simple. The initial intent was for the
viewer to be able to visually dissect the work, to take it apart stroke by stroke.
Value: $1,000
“Local” is more than around the corner or down the street.
Local is about where you’re from, how you grew up and the unique characteristics
that make you who you are.
Local is rooted. It’s part of the landscape and woven into the fabric. It’s the
heritage that defines a place and makes it distinct from all others.
Local doesn’t buy customers; it earns them by delivering valued service at a
reasonable price with integrity and personal attention.
Alliance Bank is local. We didn’t move here; we’ve been here all along, taking in
local deposits from people we know and using those deposits to finance local
mortgages, local car loans, and local business loans.
For us, banking is more than a business. The people we serve are neighbors and
friends. We live by the decisions we make here. There’s no luxury of distance
between us and our customers.
We deliver the best possible financial products and services to our customers,
face-to-face in our branches or online.
We didn’t move into town. We were here. We grew up here. This is home.
That’s what makes us local, and proud of it.
expect different…
Jonathan's Story
Jonathan Reid MacCrea was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia when he was six months
old. His four year old brother, Matthew, courageously donated his bone marrow to Jon, but 15 months
later, after a valiant struggle, Jonathan died. In Jon's home state of New Jersey, he and his family were
assisted by two organizations dedicated to the needs of families with children facing cancer. Realizing
there must be a similar need in Central New York, and as a memorial to her grandson, Syracuse
resident Pat MacCrea founded The Jonathan Cancer Fund in 1993.
How We Help
Many expenses associated with childhood cancer are not covered by insurance.
Additionally, during treatment, there are many hidden expenses, which may strain
a family. The Jonathan Cancer Fund can offer assistance with some of these
unexpected costs, including special equipment, doctor and drug co-pays, travel,
car repairs and phone expenses. Sometimes when a child is critically ill, one
parent may have to leave his/her job to care for that child. The Jonathan Cancer
Fund can help with utility bills, rent or mortgage payments, etc.
These are difficult
times and we really
need your help!
The Jonathan Cancer Fund can help with managing contributions made to your fundraising efforts.
Contributions made to the Jonathan Cancer Fund for a particular child are confidential, are tax
deductible and every dollar donated is passed on to meet the needs of that specific family.
Meal cards, phone cards, and gas cards are also made available to families while their child is a patient
at University Hospital.
